Recently, a study made headlines linking red meat consumption to an increased risk for type 2 diabetes. It’s no secret that navigating the realm of nutrition has become a challenge for the general public.

That’s why, on today’s Health Bites episode, we’re diving deep into the findings from this study, “Red meat intake and risk of type 2 diabetes in a prospective cohort study of United States females and males,” published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. I unpack the study’s design flaws, inaccuracies, and where the researchers got it straight up wrong.

How The Ketogenic Diet Supports Metabolism, Cancer Therapy, And Mental Health

How The Ketogenic Diet Supports Metabolism, Cancer Therapy, And Mental Health

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, AG1, and Paleovalley

While the ketogenic diet is often thought of as a diet to help people lose weight, it has a much broader application with therapeutic benefits that help to reset metabolism and restore mitochondrial function.

Researchers have found that a ketogenic diet can be a potent tool in cancer treatment as well as in neurodegenerative disorders and mental illness.

In today’s episode, I talk with Mark Sisson, Dr. Sarah Hallberg, Dr. Christopher Palmer, and Dr. Patrick Hanaway about how a ketogenic diet can be used as a treatment for serious health conditions.

Mark Sisson is the founder of the popular daily health blog Mark’s Daily Apple, godfather to the Primal food and lifestyle movement, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Keto Reset Diet. His latest book is Keto for Life, where he discusses how he combines the keto diet with a Primal lifestyle for optimal health and longevity.

The late Dr. Sarah Hallberg was a medical director at Virta Health, a fellow of the Aspen Institute’s Health Innovator Fellowship, and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. She was also the Medical Director and founder of the Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program at Indiana University Health Arnett and an adjunct professor of clinical medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Christopher Palmer is a psychiatrist and researcher working at the interface of metabolism and mental health. He is the Director of the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at McLean Hospital and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. For over 25 years, he has held leadership roles in psychiatric education, conducted research, and worked with people who have treatment-resistant mental illnesses.

Dr. Patrick Hanaway is a board-certified family physician and trained at Washington University. After 10 years as Chief Medical Officer at Genova Diagnostics, Dr. Hanaway became the Chief Medical Education Officer for the Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2014, Dr. Hanaway was the founding Medical Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine.

Journal Club with Dr. Peter Attia | Metformin for Longevity & The Power of Belief Effects

Journal Club with Dr. Peter Attia | Metformin for Longevity & The Power of Belief Effects
In this journal club episode, my guest is Stanford and Johns Hopkins-trained physician, Dr. Peter Attia, M.D., who is also the host of The Drive podcast and the author of the bestselling book "Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity." We each present a scientific paper and discuss the findings' strengths, weaknesses and actionable takeaways. First, we discuss an article that addresses whether taking the drug metformin can enhance longevity. Then, we discuss an article on belief effects (similar to placebo effects), showing how the effects of a drug on the brain and cognition depend on one's belief about the dose of the drug taken, not the actual dose. Our conversation also highlights how to read, interpret and critique scientific studies. This episode ought to be of interest to those curious about health and longevity, medicine and psychology and for anyone seeking to better understand how to read and digest scientific findings. #206 Moringa, Aloe Vera, Nettle and Fenugreek for sugar control with Dr Merlin Willcox

#206 Moringa, Aloe Vera, Nettle and Fenugreek for sugar control with Dr Merlin Willcox

Merlin Willcox, may have the answer to.

Today, we’re diving into the world of therapeutic herbs and spices. Travelling across generations and cultures from around the world to discuss traditional medicine practices, whether they hold up to scientific scrutiny and if these herbs and spices have a place in our drug cabinets as well as our kitchens.

Dr Willcox has worked as a GP in the NHS since 2003 and currently works in a practice in Oxford. His research interests at the University of Southampton include global health, clinical trials of herbal medicines, and improving care for vulnerable people.

Dr Willcox has researched different aspects of primary health care in low-income countries, with a particular focus on child health, malaria and traditional medicines. He has been involved in several clinical trials of herbal medicines in Uganda, Madagascar, Mali and the UK and coordinates the RITAM network (Research Initiative on Traditional Antimalarial Methods).

We’re talking about a bunch of compounds today including moringa, ginseng, cinnamon, nigella, fenugreek, psyllium and will be discussing their potential mechanism of action plus the evidence for them. But please, if you are thinking of supplementing or trying these items, particularly if you have a condition or take pharmaceuticals, please do discuss this with your physician.

#170 Reverse Diabetes with Dr David Unwin

#170 Reverse Diabetes with Dr David Unwin

Dr David Unwin is on the podcast with Sakina today. Many of you will recognise him as the GP from the Norwood Surgery in Southport, who is a strong advocate of lifestyle medicine and a low carb diet.

To date 110 of his patients have achieved drug free remission of their T2 Diabetes. He is the RCGP National Champion for Collaborative Care and Support Planning in Obesity and Diabetes and a RCGP Clinical Expert in Diabetes.

His work on diabetes has been published in multiple journals and it is pretty impressive. But Dr Unwin’s work is unconventional and doesn’t come without criticism from many academics who fear that a low carb strategy is not an appropriate diet longterm.

What I like about Unwins approach is the simplicity of it and how achievable it has proven to be for many of his patients. I also believe he genuinely cares about this huge problem.

What I feel this conversation lacks is a deep dive into mechanisms behind low carb diets, the applicability of it to the wider population, the pitfalls and where people can slip up. For example I know many patients who start a low carb approach on a Monday and fall back to high sugar consumption later in the week which is a dangerous combination of high fat, high sugar and is essentially a standard American diet.

We’ll have to get Dr Unwin back on the pod at some point in the future but for now I’m sure you’ll enjoy listening to him talk about how he started getting interested in nutritional interventions and how we could start using them today.
