Dr Alex George: How To Strengthen Your Mind & Build Mental Fitness

Dr Alex George: How To Strengthen Your Mind & Build Mental Fitness

From my experience working as a doctor, it’s very clear that we don’t treat mental health in the same way as physical health. And even though awareness about mental health has grown in the past decade or so, we still have a long way to go when it comes to understanding this topic and changing our attitudes towards mental health. Someone at the front of the campaign to change the conversation around mental health is Dr Alex George. Dr Alex is a TV doctor, best-selling author, and Youth Mental Health Ambassador to the government. Alex has become a well-known and respected figure amongst healthcare professionals in the UK, from his years as an A&E doctor, bringing the nation accessible and reassuring advice directly from the frontline throughout the pandemic. Alex is on a mission to improve mental health support for young people and has become prolific throughout the UK in his campaigning for Early Support Hubs and he’s recently published his latest book The Mind Manual: Mental Fitness Tools For Everyone - which we dive into during this episode. In the conversation, we talk about how to assess your mental health and understand the baseline that’s normal for you, we talk about how to build mental fitness and navigate feelings like anxiety and loneliness, and also discuss some of the ‘universal truths’ from Alex’s new book that everyone needs to remember. Enjoy :)

Disclaimer - this conversation includes discussion around suicide.

James Boardman - How to Maintain the Four Pillars of a Good Life (Lessons from a Royal Marine)

James Boardman - How to Maintain the Four Pillars of a Good Life (Lessons from a Royal Marine)

Today’s guest is James Boardman. James is a former Royal Marine Commando Sniper and Physical Trainer. He served for a total of 9 years and during that time deployed to Afghanistan as part of a 6 man sniper team. James finished his career as a sergeant in the Royal Marines, and spent the last 4 years of his service developing the physical, mental and emotional levels of recruits, preparing them to go to war straight out of training.

In 2011, James left the Royal Marines to pursue a family life to be present for his 2 children , but he found the first few years unforgiving as he struggled to come to terms with being back to a normal life.

James’ incredible journey through PTSD, divorce, depression, drinking, and near suicide led him to start his first successful business, Bootcamp, and later, he started The Man Coach with the sole purpose of helping men become Elite Operators in life. He aims to help men that were in the same position as he was when leaving the military - lost, struggling to find out who they are and where they’re going. In 2020, James started a new company called Time Domination, which helps business owners overcome time and energy management issues.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • What was it like going to war and fighting other humans?
    • The transition from the military to normal, open-ended life.
    • The process of Self-Audit and accepting where you are right now.
    • The Four Pillars: Health, Relationships, Personal Development, and Career.
    • Maintaining your happy state is as big a win as progressing.
    • Gratitude is the key to not feeling sorry for yourself.
    • Turn yourself into a Swiss army knife.
    • You're either basing your life on your career or your career on your life.
    • The most important relationship is with yourself.

698 Glenn Beck on Suicide and Addiction to Riches and Fame

698 Glenn Beck on Suicide and Addiction to Riches and Fame

If the world says “you’re enough” and you don’t believe it, it doesn’t matter.
If you are the only person in the world who says “I am enough,” that’s all you need.
How you finish the phrase “I am” will change your entire life. Saying “I am worthless” or “I am stupid” speaks those words into existence.
If you don’t finish the phrase “I am,” someone else will fill it in for you. It could be your parents, your partner, or even your critics.
The truth is, you are special. You are loved. You are enough.
On this episode, I discuss this idea with a powerful and polarizing media personality: Glenn Beck.
Glenn Beck is founder of TheBlaze, a news and entertainment network, where he hosts The Glenn Beck Show. He’s a renowned American media personality, political commentator, and author.
Glenn has lived through a lot of tragedy in his life.
He has chosen to use all that he’s been through to get to where he is today. He’s not perfect nor does he expect anyone else to be.
Glenn makes the argument that we should stop making people into heroes or villains.
Learn all about Glenn’s journey and how he thinks about the bigger picture instead of getting outraged on Episode 698.
