September 22nd, 2023: Arms Race Alert, Diplomatic Duels, and Workers on the Warpath
In this episode of "The President's Daily Brief" with Mike Baker: We begin by unpacking Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's resolute declaration: Should Iran pursue nuclear ambitions, Saudi Arabia will not be left behind. This remark, voiced in a recent Fox News interview, ignites growing apprehensions of a looming Mideast arms contest. We then revisit our lead story from Thursday. As Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky seeks support from US lawmakers, Poland makes an unexpected decision, halting weapon provisions to Ukraine due to deepening grain import disputes. In a separate segment. We discuss the spiraling diplomatic row between Canada and India, marked by the suspension of visa services for Canadians in the wake of contentious assassination allegations. Rounding up our episode, we return to the ongoing strike saga of the United Auto Workers. The pay and benefits impasse escalates, with the UAW now considering the extension of its strike to additional plants.   Please remember to subscribe if you enjoyed this episode of the President's Daily Brief.     Email: PDB@TheFirstTV.com Learn more about your ad choices. What the US-Iran Prisoner Swap Means For the Family of a Man Freed After 8 Years

What the US-Iran Prisoner Swap Means For the Family of a Man Freed After 8 Years
On Tuesday, five Americans detained for years in Iran stepped off a plane back onto US soil.

They were released in the US-Iran prisoner swap that also saw five Iranians freed and the US agreeing to 6 billion dollars of Iranian oil money being unfrozen. Per the deal, Iran is supposed to spend the money only on humanitarian goods like food and medicine.

Among the five freed Americans: Siamak Namazi. The longest-held US citizen in Iran, detained since 2015.

When he stepped off that plane yesterday, his brother Babak was there to greet him.

NPR's Mary Louise Kelly speaks with Babak Namazi on what the prisoner swap means for his family.

What Do We Do With Radioactive Wastewater?

What Do We Do With Radioactive Wastewater?
Workers in Japan started releasing treated radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday. Reactors at the plant began melting down after a 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit the area. To stop the meltdown, plant workers flooded the reactors with water. But even now, when the plant is offline, the reactors need to be cooled. All that water—about 350 million gallons—is being stored on-site in over 1,000 tanks. And now, these tanks are almost full.

Today on the show, host Regina G. Barber talks to NPR reporters Geoff Brumfiel and Kat Lonsdorf about the official plan for the radioactive wastewater, the science behind the release and why some are unhappy about it.
