Specialist guest George Aitken was in the Royal Navy Submarines for 10 years. David & Joe have a thousand questions for him but start with small talk about coming from the Isle Of Wight, filming in Lymington and Howards Way. David gets claustrophobia and wants to know about people who have lost their minds on board, how much space he'd have down there and what would happen if he had a panic attack. George tells them there are 100 or more crew living in a confined space and it can get a bit stinky. Joe reckons he would be fine living in a tube underwater as it would be cosy. They talk about stalking other submarines to gain intel and using mini subs to get to the surface to undertake secret missions James Bond style. David asks if they've ever come across an unidentified mass on the sonar. George says this is usually a whale or a giant squid mating with the submarine. Joe asks if there is any truth behind the saying of having a girl in every port. The Challenge of Filling the Army's Ranks

In the 1980s the U.S. Army launched a recruiting drive around the slogan, "Be all you can be." They've relaunched the slogan now as the push is on to make up for a drop off in recruitment.

The Army is having a hard time convincing potential recruits that the military is the best place to reach their full potential. Last year, the Army was 15,000 soldiers short of its recruiting goal.

Army surveys have found that many potential recruits don't want to join because they fear getting wounded or killed, even though the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are over. And the tight labor market means recruits have lots of other job opportunities.

NPR's Mary Louise Kelly speaks with Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth about the struggle to staff up the largest branch of the U.S. military. NPR's Pentagon Correspondent Tom Bowman provides additional reporting for this episode.

I've had several Navy SEALs on the podcast, because as the SEALs are one of the world's last bastions of unabashed manliness, they have a lot to teach modern men. My previous SEAL guests have talked about how the lessons they learned from being a special operator can apply to gaining greater resilience, navigating the business world, and even parenting. In these interviews, we talked a little about their SEAL training. But in today’s episode, we're really get into the nitty gritty of that training, and talk about the specifics of what it takes to become a Navy SEAL. My guest today is Rorke Denver. He’s a Navy SEAL commander and the author of two books: Damn Few: Making the Modern SEAL Warrior and Worth Dying For: A Navy SEAL’s Call to Action. Today on the show Rorke and I discuss the intense training that goes into becoming a SEAL as well as what lessons civilians can take from the SEALs on leadership, sacrifice, and duty.
