Deepfakes and the 2024 election season

Audio deepfakes have become shockingly convincing in the last few years. A deepfake robocall impersonating President Joe Biden encouraging voters to stay home for the New Hampshire primary was one recent example of how far the technology has advanced. That’s why “Marketplace Tech” is launching a limited series called “Decoding Democracy.” Marketplace’s Lily Jamali will be joined by other Marketplace reporters, experts and researchers to discuss what election mis- and disinformation is out there, how to spot it and how it impacts our democracy. In this first episode of “Decoding Democracy,” Marketplace senior correspondent Kimberly Adams joins Jamali to delve into the latest on audio deepfake technology and how to protect yourself from being fooled by one.

Here's the News: Are Government-Private Partnerships Silencing Dissenting Voices?

As I discuss with Tucker, just how far did government-private partnerships go to suppress dissenting voices like mine? This is how far.

When Bots Babble: Exploring the 4 Types of Hallucinations Generated by ChatGPT & Co
Today on A Beginner's Guide to AI, we explore the phenomenon of hallucinations in large language models like ChatGPT and GPT4. These advanced AIs can sometimes generate strange, nonsensical, or plainly inaccurate text when prompted in confusing ways.
We covered the four main types of hallucinations, ranging from gibberish, to false facts, to anthropomorphic statements. Real world examples reveal how convincing these AI-generated hallucinations can seem. Maintaining human oversight and validating critical information is key.
Looking ahead, hallucinations may become more frequent as language models grow more powerful. But with responsible use, we can still benefit tremendously from AI's capabilities, while minimizing potentially dangerous errors.
This podcast was generated with the help of artificial intelligence. We do fact check with human eyes, but there might still be hallucinations in the output.
