Exclusive Dr. Hyman+ Ask A Doctor: Sleep Apnea, Covid-19 Vaccine, And More

    enDecember 26, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • The Benefits of Consuming Organ Meats for Your HealthOrgan meats, like liver, are packed with important nutrients, including Vitamin A, which is essential for your eyesight and immune system. If you're not a fan of liver, consider organic meat supplements from reputable brands.

Organ meats, such as liver, are highly nutritious and beneficial for our health. They are rich in important nutrients like Vitamin A, B vitamins, minerals, and substances that support energy production. Liver, in particular, is an excellent source of Vitamin A, crucial for eyesight, skin health, and the immune system. While you can also obtain Vitamin A from plant-based sources like vegetables, the body's conversion of beta-carotene to retinol varies among individuals. Therefore, consuming organ meats is a great way to ensure you get an ample supply of retinol. If you're not a fan of liver, you can consider organic, pasture-raised meat supplements from reputable brands like Designs for Health, Paleovalley, or Ancient Nutrition. When it comes to dosage, follow the instructions on the bottle.

    • Understanding Sleep Apnea: Causes, Symptoms, and DiagnosisSleep Apnea is a serious condition that can have multiple negative effects on health. Recognizing the symptoms and seeking accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and prevention of further complications.

Sleep Apnea is a serious condition that can lead to various health issues. It occurs when there are breaks in breathing during sleep, causing a lack of oxygen in the body. Sleep Apnea can contribute to insulin resistance, weight gain, inflammation, heart problems, and even sudden death. It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms that may indicate Sleep Apnea, such as feeling tired all the time, snoring, unexplained weight gain, and high blood pressure. While at-home tests may be more convenient and cost-effective, in-hospital sleep studies are considered the gold standard for accurate diagnosis. Treatment should not be delayed, as losing weight may not necessarily improve Sleep Apnea.

    • Glycoproteins, Advanced Glycation End Products, and Heart HealthMonitoring and reducing glycoproteins and advanced glycation end products can lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, through lifestyle changes and clinical tests.

Glycoproteins and advanced glycation end products are a concern when it comes to cardiovascular health. When carbohydrates attach to proteins in the body, glycoproteins are formed, and if there is a high blood sugar level, there can be an increase in glycoproteins. Advanced glycosylated end products, on the other hand, are formed when these glycoproteins cause damage to the vasculature, leading to plaque production in the arteries and a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. Moreover, these end products decrease the amount of nitric oxide in the arteries, which can result in increased blood pressure and erectile dysfunction. Lowering the levels can be achieved through lifestyle modifications, such as reducing glucose and carbohydrate intake, and increasing exercise and lean muscle mass. Monitoring the glycosylation of hemoglobin through a hemoglobin A1C test is a clinical way to measure the impact of these glycosylated proteins and guide interventions.

    • Impact of Cooking Methods and Diet on AGES Formation and Testing Methods for AGESCooking food at high temperatures can increase AGES formation, while slow and low-temperature cooking can reduce it. Consuming a diet rich in colorful vegetables and spices can help lower AGES levels. The hemoglobin A1C test is commonly used to test for AGES.

Cooking methods can have an impact on the formation of advanced glycosylated end products (AGES) in our food. Fast cooking at high temperatures, such as grilling or frying, can lead to higher levels of AGES being formed. On the other hand, slow and low-temperature cooking is beneficial in reducing AGES. Additionally, consuming a diet rich in phytonutrients, with a variety of colorful vegetables and spices, can help block or lower AGES in the body. When it comes to testing for AGES, the hemoglobin A1C test is currently the primary method used in clinics. As for the impact of the COVID-19 vaccine on the gut microbiome, research suggests that both the vaccine and COVID-19 infection can affect the microbiome. A healthy gut microbiome, with sufficient levels of beneficial probiotics like Akkermansia and bifidobacteria, may play a role in mitigating the severity of COVID-19 symptoms.

    • The Impact of Gut Microbiome on Vaccine ResponseMaintaining a healthy gut microbiome through diet and avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use can improve vaccine efficacy and promote a stronger immune response.

Our gut microbiome plays a crucial role in how our body responds to vaccines. The presence of certain microbes in the gut can impact our immune system and the production of antibodies. Good bacteria in the gut produce short chain fatty acids that help heal the gut and modulate the immune system. Factors like stress levels and antibiotic use can also affect vaccine efficacy by altering the gut microbiome. Research has shown that people who have taken antibiotics within the six months prior to receiving a vaccine may have a weaker immune response. Therefore, it is important to prioritize gut health by consuming a fiber-rich diet, incorporating fermented foods, and avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use.

When we use this practice to assess the metabolic diseases we see today, we can see we’re in an energy crisis. We’re wrapped up in a web of physiologic root causes, but also a web of policies, industries, and economic incentives impacting our health from the ground up. I loved discussing all this and more on this episode of the podcast with Dr. Casey Means.  We take a deep dive into: Why we need to reimagine the healthcare system and how to use Functional Medicine as a framework for asking “why?” Using metabolic health as a barometer for our challenges as a society  A stark reality: Every institution related to our health makes money off of sickness Combining advanced technology with our own awareness to take back control of our health Five affordable biomarkers of metabolic syndrome to start with  And so much more!
