TWiT 978: Baptized in Gatorade - AI Priest, FCC Fines, Jack Dorsey Leaves Bluesky

TWiT 978: Baptized in Gatorade - AI Priest, FCC Fines, Jack Dorsey Leaves Bluesky

In this episode of This Week in Tech, Leo Laporte is joined by Georgia Dow, Shoshana Weissmann, and Fr. Robert Ballecer, tackling a wide range of thought-provoking topics, from the ethical implications of AI in sensitive fields to the challenges of creating and consuming content in an increasingly commercialized digital landscape.

    • The panel grapples with the potential risks and benefits of AI-powered therapists and priests, stressing the need for human empathy and discernment in these emotionally charged roles.

    • They confront the harsh realities of the internet's "heat death," as the relentless pursuit of profits and engagement leads to a glut of low-quality content and erodes user trust.

    • The group reflects on the double-edged sword of democratized media, celebrating the value of supporting emerging voices while acknowledging the importance of professional standards.

    • As Twitter faces existential challenges, the panel surveys the social media horizon, evaluating alternative platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky, and weighing the implications of Jack Dorsey's departure from the Bluesky board.

    • Elon Musk's reckless tweets about taking Tesla private have come back to haunt him, with the Supreme Court upholding an SEC settlement requiring his Tesla-related posts to be vetted by a lawyer.

    • The FCC has cracked down on major telecom companies for the illegal sale of location data, while legislators push for reforms to prevent the government from exploiting privacy loopholes.

    • Congress continues its misguided crusade to protect children online, with ill-conceived age verification mandates and privacy-eroding measures that threaten the very foundations of digital security. The panel offers an impassioned critique of these shortsighted efforts.

    • The once-beloved video game Helldivers 2 serves as a cautionary tale of platform overreach, as a heavy-handed PlayStation Network login requirement sparks a massive player revolt and torpedoes the game's reputation.

    • Apple's quarterly results are analyzed, and all eyes are on Apple's upcoming event, where new iPads and an enhanced Apple Pencil are expected to take center stage. But the real buzz surrounds the rumored M4 chip and its tantalizing AI capabilities, hinting at a potential game-changer for the iconic brand.

    • The group geeks out over Disney+'s radical revival of X-Men '97 and Amazon's ambitious Fallout adaptation, complete with an immersive easter egg phone experience

    • The freewheeling discussion also touches on Shoshana's ingenious Alexa hacks for Sabbath TV viewing, a UK council's apostrophe apocalypse, the looming cicada invasion, and Fr. Robert's role as a guardian angel for the Vatican's feral felines.

Jonathan Pageau is a French-Canadian liturgical artist and icon carver, known for his work featured in museums across the world. He carves Eastern Orthodox and other traditional images, and teaches an online carving class. He also runs a YouTube channel dedicated to the exploration of symbolism across history and religion.

Dr. Stephen C. Meyer - How to Disprove the Theory of Evolution and the Scientific Case for God

Dr. Stephen C. Meyer - How to Disprove the Theory of Evolution and the Scientific Case for God

Today’s guest is one of my most anticipated ever, Dr. Stephen C. Meyer, who is openly contesting much of what is assumed about evolution and natural selection.

Stephen received his Ph.D. in the philosophy of science from the University of Cambridge. A former geophysicist and college professor, he now directs Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture in Seattle.

He has authored the New York Times best seller Darwin’s Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design and Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design, which was named a Book of the Year by the Times of London Literary Supplement in 2009. Stephen’s books and research address the deepest mystery surrounding the origin of human and animal life, particularly the origin of biological information necessary to produce it.

In his latest book, The Return of the God Hypothesis, Stephen presents groundbreaking scientific evidence of the existence of God, based on breakthroughs in physics, cosmology, and biology.

It’s no secret that I too used a bit of math, physics and cosmology to try and show that our universe and everything in it is not the result of randomness but rather the product of intricate design. (Chapter 14 of Solve for Happy)

Give us a chance today to take you through the possibility of the existence of a divine designer. This surely is a topic that, regardless of how busy you are today, is worth taking a little bit of time to slow down.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • Political correctness in science.
    • What led Stephen to dive into his work?
    • The highly unlikely probability for evolution to generate new species in such time.
    • The bike lock analogy.
    • DNA is literally like software code, and therefore someone must have programmed it.
    • Information is the hallmark of intelligent activity and inference to the best explanation.
    • Darwin’s Doubt and the Cambrian Explosion.
    • What did Darwin get right?
    • The return of the God hypothesis: who is the designer?

Mark Williamson - Choosing Happiness Before Money

Mark Williamson - Choosing Happiness Before Money

Today's guest is my longtime friend and ally in happiness, Mark Williamson. Mark is the co-founder of Director of Action for Happiness, a movement of people taking action to create a happier and kinder world. With an active community of over a million supporters in 180 countries, chances are you've seen a piece of content from Action for Happiness on your Instagram feed in the past.

Mark is passionate about creating a more balanced and caring society that focuses more on helping both people and communities thrive. In that sense, Mark and I share the same goal in bringing awareness of how to be happier to the masses. And like myself, Mark came from a background of both business and engineering before ending up on a path of seeking and spreading happiness full time. This has forged a friendship that has seen us meet at happiness gatherings all over the world.

If you have any doubt that Mark has ended up on his proper path in life, spend a minute listening to him. He radiates joy, a fruit of pursuing his purpose and helping others. That alone backs up the wisdom in his words.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • Mark's journey from the commercial world to a leap of faith that led him to found the Action for Happiness movement
    • Whether he regrets leaving behind high corporate salaries for a more purposeful life
    • Why people continue to live unhappy lives rather than pursuing what makes them happy
    • An incredible exercise for gaining perspective on your purpose and goals
    • Mark's To-Be List, the most clever supplement to a To-Do List
    • His mantra, embodied by an ironically and hilariously vulgar acronym
    • What Action for Happiness actually does
    • How religion plays a role in happiness and vice-versa

890 Finding Happiness Through Fame with Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons

890 Finding Happiness Through Fame with Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons

    YOU HAVE TO LET GO.
So many of us make decisions because we feel like we have to do something.
Whether it’s the religion we grew up in, what our parents want, or what we feel is culturally acceptable, we often betray ourselves.
But you can only live this way for so long before you start to break down.
You’ll lose sight of who you are and suddenly realize you don’t know how to find it.
    It’s a lonely feeling.
For me, this point came after I got injured in football. I was forced to look at my decisions and figure out what I wanted.
On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about spirituality, relationships, and mental health with one of the most successful musicians of all time: Dan Reynolds.
Dan Reynolds is the lead singer of Imagine Dragons and a recipient of the Songwriters Hall of Fame Hal David Starlight Award.
He shares how he had a crisis of faith after being raised Mormon. He almost divorced his wife and left everything behind. But he was able to make some changes and find himself again.
So get ready to learn how to stop living a people-pleasing life and stay true to yourself on Episode 890.
    Some Questions I Ask:
How were you able to make your relationship work? (05:00)
Why do you think people don’t share how they feel? (38:00)
