    Snacksize 7: Integrative Cancer Therapy

Todays Snacksize Doctor’s Kitchen podcast is all about integrative approaches to cancer. This is obviously a hugely emotive topic, but I’m a firm believer that more can be done to prevent and treat the multitude of cancers.

Catch Dr Zollman on Episode 72 and 159 talking about the rise of integrative medicine and how it applies to cancer prevention, therapy and preventing recurrence after treatment.

#174 Become pain free and take control of your health with Dr Deepak Ravindran

#174 Become pain free and take control of your health with Dr Deepak Ravindran

My good friend Deepak is back on the podcast today speaking with Sakina. I had the most wonderful conversation with Deepak on the podcast before.

Dr Deepak Ravindran is a boundary spanning ‘upstreamist’ with a trauma informed approach to pain practice. He has over 20 years of experience in Pain Management and is Clinical Lead in Pain Medicine at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in the UK. He is also one of the very few consultants in the UK who holds a certification in musculoskeletal, pain medicine and is board certified in lifestyle medicine. Longcovid, Pain Medicine and Trauma informed practice are subjects that Deepak is passionate about and today Sakina chats to him about:

    DIY vs DWY medicine

Sleep and it’s impact on chronic pain

Setting the circadian rhythm, sunlight and caffeine

    Making complementary therapy more accessible

He hosts the PainSpeak podcast and is the author of the Best Seller “The Pain Free Mindset” released in 2021 and it’s by far one of my favouroite books. It’s aimed at patients suffering with pain but it’s also immensely useful for all healthcare professionals in understanding all the recent advances around pain management in a trauma informed manner.

#132 Saving Lives in Slow Motion with Dr Ayan Panja

#132 Saving Lives in Slow Motion with Dr Ayan Panja

Today’s show is a little bit different from the norm. I’m catching up with good friend of mine and fellow GP, Dr Ayan Panja. You’ll recognise him from previous episodes where we discussed heart and brain health and he has been practising medicine for 22 years since qualifying from Imperial College School of Medicine (my old university).

He co-founded and teaches on the RCGP accredited course “Prescribing Lifestyle Medicine”, he’s writing a book that I cannot wait to read, due for publication in January 2023, plus he’s the host of a brilliant podcast called “Saving Lives in Slow motion”.

This is where Ayan takes 15 minutes of your time to give his perspective on health and wellbeing which is “quietly-mind expanding” as he puts it. Informal, but professional and very very listenable. So good in fact, that I’ve embedded one of my favourite episodes that you’re about to listen to before me and Ayan chat on my podcast. This is on medical myths it runs for about 12 minutes and then you’ll hear me and Ayan talk about a number of other topics:

    • Bereavement
    • Lifestyle Medicine
    • Ayan’s new book
    • Why medics need to take a break
    • Some of our favourite UK artists

#74 How Diet Can Save Your Mental Health with Professor Felice Jacka

#74 How Diet Can Save Your Mental Health with Professor Felice Jacka

We all know that a poor diet negatively impacts our physical health. In fact, it is now the leading cause of early death in men and number two in women. But it’s not only our physical health that is affected – the effects on our mental health can also be devastating. This week, I am joined by world leading expert in the field of nutritional psychiatry, Professor Felice Jacka, to discuss her ground-breaking research into the link between food and our mental health. We discuss why lifestyle medicine should be the starting point for many mental health conditions and why there is an urgent need to train medical practitioners to give such lifestyle advice. We delve into the important role the gut microbiome plays in this area and how a diet rich in diversity is key. We also talk about the link between a mother’s diet in pregnancy and their child’s emotional health. At a time where the modern food environment is so broken and depression and anxiety are on the rise, this conversation is more important than ever. It really is a fascinating listen – I hope you enjoy it!
