The Roman Empire [W/ Dr. Eric Graff]

The Roman Empire [W/ Dr. Eric Graff]

    "How often do you think about the Roman Empire?" #rome #stoicism #stoic #marcusaurelius #warzone #warzone #napoleon #ridleyscott #movie #review #cinema #art #beauty

This question has become trendy in social media, but it is not new to historians or serious thinkers. Thus, we summoned Dr. Eric Graff to help us dive into this discussion.

We begin the discussion, however, by giving our initial impressions of Napoleon as directed and produced by Sir Ridley Scott featuring Joaquin Phoenix and then move into discussing what exactly the Roman Empire is, and some of its pros and cons.

Is a desire to be "Roman" a response to decadence or a desire for more?

Puntata 61/111 Mettere il 4X4 nelle giornate no

Puntata 61/111 Mettere il 4X4 nelle giornate no

E4: Meet Don Strickland - My Road

My guest today is Don Strickland. He grew up in small towns and big cities in Texas, and spent the last 40 years in Austin raising a family and growing his career in computer technology for companies such as Schlumberger and Apple. A few years ago, Don made a decision on how to travel one of the hardest and most meaningful roads, a human faces.

He invited all who braved it to travel and learn and grow with him. I invite you to lean in and enjoy this journey with Don at the wheel.

    Don's Obituary by Jan Chapman

Our treasured Don Strickland – husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, grandad, mentor, and friend – slipped out of a failing body and into the next adventure on Thursday, October 27, 2022. The love of his life, Jo Ann, was by his side, as she was for over 41 years. Don made a brilliant and inspiring 4-year effort to live life to the fullest while coping with the gradually disabling effects of glioblastoma.

“Please don’t let this event define your lives in negative ways,” Don wrote 3 years ago. Nothing would please him ...

    LIFE: The User Manual

Have you ever felt like everyone else knows how to succeed in life, but you never got the memo?  Like everyone else got a "User Manual" that you never did?  I have struggled with this my entire life.  But thanks to my recent resolution to read more books, I found the ancient secret.

And so I decided to share it here with you guys.  It's a little bit of a serious subject, but that's okay.  Sometimes.  Got to be serious and have a little education in your life.

    So buckle up!

It's going to be a fun ride.

Epictetus is one of my favorite stoic philosophers. #36 Enough

    #36 Enough

Knowing when you have enough is a key concept when seeking happiness. Some people never find it. Never enough money. Never enough information or research in order to make a decision. Their work is never quite good enough to ship. There's always more options to explore before taking action. They have analysis paralysis. The truth is that we can many times get as good...or even better results by letting some of that pressure go and understanding the minimum effective dose that gets us almost everything that we truly need.

    ईगो इज द एनिमी बाय रयान हॉलिडे | Ego is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday

In Ego is the Enemy, Ryan Holiday shows us how and why ego is such a powerful internal opponent to be guarded against at all stages of our careers and lives, and that we can only create our best work when we identify, acknowledge, and disarm its dangers.

Episode 16 - Ego is the Enemy

Episode 16 - Ego is the Enemy

Hi guys! Today's episode is talking about the awesome self-improvement/philosophy book "Ego is the Enemy" by Ryan Holiday. This book talks about implementing good stoic philosophy and the wisdom of humble greatness into your life. If you can stay humble, there is no end to your potential. If you let your ego get in the way, then there is every likelihood that you will fail, or at least not reach your fullest potential.

This book was important to me and gave me a lot to think about. If you're interested, check it out! If you like the show, please share it with someone who you think might get a kick out of it. How to Live More Courageously Part 1

How to Live More Courageously Part 1

We live in an age of cowards. Of people going along with the crowd because it’s the easy thing to do. It feels safer to throw stones at the other side than it does to stand for something positive and hopeful. There’s risk in questioning things and seeking other perspectives, whereas joining in the mob costs us nothing (except perhaps our character).

Courage is about stretching out of your comfort zone and doing the right thing. You won’t always get congratulated for that, but, when it comes to helping people out, they are almost always appreciative of kind gestures.

This episode discusses what courage is and how Stoicism and the Enneagram can help us cultivate more of it. Part 2 will dive into specific practices you can do to boost your bravery and good human cred.

But maybe things have always been this way.

It’s still difficult for most people to wrap their minds around the Holocaust, how so many people just went along with it. The more I learn about psychology, the more I understand how it happened, but it doesn’t make the lack of courage any more appalling.

As a kid learning about WWII, I had no doubt in my mind that I would have done the right thing had I been in Germany at that time. I’m less sure now that I’m older but I hope I would have acted like a man I learned about when visiting Berlin’s Topography of Terror.

In a black and white photo at this museum, I saw a crowd of mostly men raising their arms in the nazi salute but one man did not join them.

Wow. Can you imagine yourself doing the same?

Courage doesn’t have to be as grand as being part of the nazi resistance.

It can be as small as offering to help a stranger on the sidewalk. In your mind, you might debate, “Well, do they really need my help? Would I offend them if I offered to open the door for them?” And you might really worry about offending them, but you’re likely also worried, maybe more so, that they would make you feel bad if they took offense to your offer.

Courage is about stretching out of your comfort zone and doing the right thing. You won’t always get congratulated for that, but, when it comes to helping people out, they are almost always appreciative of kind gestures.
