Maternity Leave Policies & Returning to Work After Loss

Maternity Leave Policies & Returning to Work After Loss

Liz's son, Harrison, was stillborn at full term. She joins me in discussing her experiences in her workplace with maternity leave policy and what that looked like. When she found that the terms were not even in place for mothers who didn't get to bring their baby home, she did a ton of research and went to bat for herself and her son, Harrison. She gives some recommendations on how you too can approach your company to try to make change happen.  We also talk about returning to work and the different ways you can handle it.

Going back to work is scary. It's a place where you were at pregnant and happy. Going back after your baby dies seems like going back in time where nothing happened. It's weird and it's a little jarring. Some don't ever want to return and some want to go back ASAP for the distraction. Whatever you feel, it's normal and in this episode we discuss it all.

    We hope it helps!

    Your Baby's Birthday

    Your Baby's Birthday

In this episode, I answer your questions and concerns regarding your baby's birthday. I also give perspective on the difference in Brody's 1st Birthday and his 2nd that we just experienced yesterday. Along with all of this, I read to you some examples of what other parents do on their baby's birthday to help give you some ideas or to help normalize what you'd like to or are already doing.

It's a tough topic, and it's not easy being a parent to a dead child. We are doing our absolute best. I hope this episode sheds some light on the subject and helps guide you through the 1st, 2nd or whatever year it is if you need some insight.

    Support Guide

    Support Guide

At the request of many, Liz and I created this short episode to share with those in your circle. We answer your Instagram submissions on what you want others to know. So many times support people just have no idea how to navigate this and in the thick of grief, loss parents don't have the words to tell them. Well, we hope that this episode can be shared with those that are looking for ways to help or maybe a guide on what NOT to do.

Loss Parents, this is also a great episode to help validate how you're feeling in response to how others are treating the death of your baby. We are here to help you realize you are not alone in how you feel and maybe suggest some ways that you can give to those around you that would better help.

Support people are our lifeline during the darkest times a human can experience. So if you are a support person, thank you for even listening to try to help. We can't do it without good support and love.

Liz and I are brutally honest and we of course are only speaking from our own opinions and experiences. Not speaking for everyone out there. In the 100s of conversations I've had with loss parents, I can tell you that these are the most popular things that they want support people to know.

    We hope it helps!

For The Love Of Episode! Gather Around for Q&A of the Things We Love!

For The Love Of Episode! Gather Around for Q&A of the Things We Love!

This is our "Love Of" episode!

Whether it's a laid-back gathering with Brazilian fare for Rick's birthday or a jubilant shindig with many friends, we discuss that it's the love intertwined in these moments that truly makes them shine.

We go through a series of questions -  what movie we love most, what TV show, what food we love most, what relationship we love most... it's a fun conversation and along the way, we're joined by Chris Rossetti, who teaches a different way to think of a question I pose... we love learning something new on All About The Joy!

As we wrap up, we venture into the realm of family and friendships, discussing the poignant influence of both bloodline and chosen family in our lives. Rick and I share stories close to our hearts, exploring the fabric of relationships that shape us and the threads of TV shows, music and movies that weave into our beliefs and humor. Sit back, pour yourself a mug of your favorite beverage—perhaps not coffee if you're anything like our guest Chris, but join us as we unwrap the gift of connection, love, and the simple joys that life brings our way.

    Pregnancy After Loss: Gender Disappointment

    Pregnancy After Loss: Gender Disappointment

Liz (from episode 1 and 30) is back to discuss this taboo topic of "Gender Disappointment" during PAL. This is a topic we get asked about A LOT. Now, I don't love this phrase but it's general and we understand what it means without further explanation. I'd like to say it's more like Gender Processing because there's definitely a reaction to having the opposite sex of the baby you lost. We dive into the dark, the ugly, the things we only say to each other. Grief is a big topic we discuss as well as how we handled PAL. We LOVE our babies, however, there are moments that we have to process not having the "picture" we always thought we had.

We are open and honest about this and we hope it helps. This is REAL TALK, mommas!

Jeanette + Sabrina: 40 years later

Jeanette + Sabrina: 40 years later

This momma's beautiful daughter was stillborn in 1985. Her perspective ranges over 40 years and she gives insight on what she did and didn't do over the years. We talk about shame behind stillbirth, fear of telling people about them, bringing them through the years and trying to honor them privately.

This is incredible insight from a momma who has done this for decades. If you are a momma who lost years ago, please reach out to her. She is looking to now talk about Sabrina more, help others in this situation, and talk to mommas who may struggle with their grief so long after.

    Holidays After Loss

    Holidays After Loss

Brody's Dad, my husband Michael is back in the studio with me to discuss the upcoming holidays. This is the second holiday season after loss for us and we discuss how different they are from last year's. Michael and I are very different, even in our style of communicating. So this is helpful for those that want to maybe get a glimpse of what their partner may be thinking.

    What else we discuss:

    • Triggers around the holidays
    • Relatives that are insensitive to your loss
    • Traditions that include your baby
    • Having a living child this year
    • Being envious of blissfully ignorant pregnancies
    • Him being hyper vigilant with my feelings around the holidays
    • Giving pregnant strangers advice
    • Having a less than perfect life as a parent vs others
    • And a lot more...

This is a candid interview between a married couple. It is our views and ours only. We do not mean to treat or diagnose anyone. We are simply sharing our thoughts and experiences to help you navigate life after baby death.

    Lauren + Austin

    Lauren + Austin

Lauren tells us about her beautiful boy, Austin, who died at 38 weeks from a cord compression. Her way of accepting what has happened has brought her peace which she explains in this episode. She also discusses how poorly some of the medical professionals around her treated her when Austin was born and then what she DID about it. We've all had experiences with people having no compassion right after our loss and this is how Lauren handled it. She does it the right way and received positive responses from those she spoke to thus making change for all bereaved families to follow her. This is a great episode to listen to if you've ever wanted to approach your medical team about their behavior after your loss.

Lauren has so many great pieces of information on how she handled things in the weeks and months after Austin was born.

    We cover:

    • How to approach medical staff with facts in order to give feedback on their professional behavior.
    • Workplace policy for bereavement leave
    • Fighting for policy
    • Phases after loss
    • Going day to day with loss
    • Getting answers and being at peace with them.

    Baby After Loss

    Baby After Loss

HEADS UP: This episode speaks about having a living baby after loss. Sarah from episode 24 is back to chat with me about our experiences in this phase of loss life with a 4 month and 6 month old. This is uncharted territory for both of us and we have mutually felt that there is not much being said in the loss community about how challenging it is to have a living baby after loss. We want to tell you about what we've learned.  While mine and Sarah's losses are very different, we share the same feelings about the trauma, joy, grief, challenges, and pain that occur when having a living baby after your first baby dies.

We navigated loss life after Brody and Nathanial died. Now we are navigating parenting their little siblings, Wolfy and Thomas.

This is NOT to scare or treat anyone. This is NOT complaining. We are also not speaking for everyone. This is us talking about our experiences in hopes we can help other mommas who are feeling the same way. Just shedding light on the normalcies having a living baby after loss include.

    What we discuss:

    • The less than ideal way the baby after loss arrives
    • It's not anything like we imagined
    • We prepped for PAL but not for when the baby is here.
    • We have the same experiences as other living baby parents do except ours has a layer of trauma
    • Early induction after loss
    • Relationships with people who dropped off when our baby died but came back when we had a living one.
    • Breastfeeding, pumping, feeding, formula, pain, etc
    • Terror over joy
    • Guilt for not hyper-focusing on our baby that died.
    • The definition of a "good mother"
    • Out partners and what they are experiencing
    • Finding space to talk about our baby that died.
    • Parenting a dead child while raising a living one
    • We cover a lot of things...

    Stillbirth Prevention & Advocacy

Amanda from Episode 12 is back! She talks about her recent efforts in DC to create awareness around stillbirth prevention and making moves to stop it. With the organization, Measure the Placenta, she hopes to help make some change in our prenatal healthcare in the US.  She is a wealth of knowledge on this subject and you will learn so much listening to her. This is for anyone that needs light shed on this subject to help others understand what stillbirth actually is and how we can try to stop it from happening in the future...

Camila is a surrogate Loss Mom who experienced a full term stillbirth. In this episode we discuss her experiences with her surrogacy, the weight it put on her and her family and the preventable death of the baby that she was carrying. We talk about how her grief manifested, her relationship with the biological parents, and her calling to join advocacy and prevention efforts with PUSH for Empowered Pregnancy. As the Director of Communications, she has recently finished her time in DC advocating for changes in legislation to help put a stop to preventable stillbirth.

This is a very specific topic within an already very rare category. Please share this if you know someone who has had a similar experience as Camila.
