    • Prioritize self-care during times of high pressure and demandDuring times of extreme pressure and demand, prioritize self-care by utilizing services like Instacart for essentials and take advantage of sales for savings.

When you're feeling under the weather and the pressure to work is high, prioritize self-care. Instead of pushing through, consider using services like Instacart to have essentials delivered to you quickly. Meanwhile, take advantage of sales like Ashley's anniversary sale for savings on items like mattresses. The current market also faces extreme shortages, particularly in areas like HVAC repair due to high demand. The situation is so severe that technicians are working long hours, with one local contractor reporting 80-hour workweeks. This is a reminder that taking care of yourself and seeking help when needed is crucial, especially during times of extreme demand.

    • Persistent shortage of HVAC techniciansDespite a high demand for HVAC technicians, there's a shortage due to limited family-based training. Education and training programs are now filling the gap, providing opportunities for individuals to enter the industry.

The HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) industry offers lucrative career opportunities for individuals with a combination of technical skills, such as plumbing, electrical, and carpentry, as well as strong people skills. However, there's a persistent shortage of HVAC technicians, which has been a long-standing issue in the industry. This shortage existed due to the traditional method of passing down the trade from family members, but with the expansion of opportunities in related fields, there's a growing need for individuals to enter the HVAC workforce through education and training programs. The shortage has been an issue throughout the speaker's career, and the education sector is now playing a crucial role in providing opportunities for those who don't have a family member to learn from. The HVAC industry offers a wide range of opportunities for those who are willing to learn and apply themselves, making it a valuable and rewarding career choice.

    • Career opportunities in HVAC for those without a college degreeThe HVAC industry provides accessible career paths for individuals without traditional college education through apprenticeships, co-op programs, and affordable education options. Safety and tool proficiency are crucial early focuses, and the industry's future is less susceptible to AI replacement.

The HVAC industry offers a viable career path for individuals without a traditional college education. This is evident as the industry has seen a resurgence in interest due to the correction in the education system's focus on college degrees for certain jobs. With the right training and guidance, one can enter the industry through apprenticeships or co-op programs and start working while learning. Safety and tool proficiency are essential early focuses, but students can begin working in the industry as soon as they have a foundational understanding. The HVAC industry is less likely to be replaced by AI compared to other industries, and it offers an affordable education with scholarships and low tuition costs. The goal is to get students into the workforce as soon as possible, allowing them to earn while they learn.

    • The Human Touch in Education and Customer ServiceTechnology may change how we learn and work, but human skills like customer service and empathy remain essential. Honest competition and providing accurate solutions can help individuals excel in customer-facing roles.

Technology plays a significant role in modern education and various industries, but human skills such as customer service and counseling remain essential. The speaker shares an anecdote about how students now use their phones for educational resources instead of textbooks. However, the presence of technology doesn't mean robots will replace human jobs anytime soon. Instead, there is a need for individuals to excel in customer service and empathy, especially when dealing with challenging customers. The speaker emphasizes the importance of honest competition and shares an example from the HVAC industry, where repairmen can gain popularity by providing accurate diagnoses and cost-effective solutions. In summary, while technology may change the way we learn and work, the human touch will always be in demand.

    • Honesty and expertise key in HVAC industryBeing honest and knowledgeable in HVAC industry leads to success, but it's a hazardous job requiring safety awareness and ethical business practices.

Honesty and expertise are crucial in the HVAC industry. Honest technicians who provide accurate diagnoses and charge fairly for necessary repairs can be successful and profitable. However, the job comes with hazards, including working in cramped spaces, handling dangerous chemicals, and dealing with extreme heat. A valid driver's license and smart heat management are essential. Being bilingual is an added advantage, especially in diverse areas like Texas. Overall, the HVAC industry requires a combination of technical knowledge, safety awareness, and ethical business practices.

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Knowing how to swim isn't just out of fun for the summer, it's also important to recognize that not everyone has always had the opportunity to learn to swim. This is why it is so important to recognize, in order to save lives around the water-- swimming lessons should be available for everyone.

"Only 46% of Black and 47% of Latine children had swimming lessons, compared to 72% of white children," according to a parent survey (Northwestern/Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago). Studies show there is a generational influence, if the parent doesn't know how to swim, most likely, the child will not learn either.

To help break this cycle, the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas is stepping in with the goal to eliminate childhood drowning (CDC says drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4). The Y partners with apartment complexes across the metroplex to offer free Safety Around Water lessons (SAW) to children who otherwise wouldn't have access. Last year, the SAW program served 5,834 swimmers!

On Ask the Expert, Jen Pewitt joined the KRLD Afternoon News. She is the Vice President of the YMCA Metropolitan Dallas.
