    enApril 13, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Overcoming Challenges and Finding Strength: Josh's UpbringingJosh's childhood taught him the power of resilience and humor in the face of adversity, creating a strong bond between him and his mother.

Josh's childhood was shaped by the absence of his father, but he and his mother created a loving and supportive environment despite the challenges they faced. Josh's mother did not harbor negative emotions towards his father and instead emphasized his positive qualities, highlighting that he was a great business person, charming, and handsome. In spite of their financial struggles, the household was filled with love, laughter, and comedic relief. They found strength in their ability to joke and make light of difficult situations. This experience taught Josh resiliency and the importance of finding humor in life's challenges. Despite not having a traditional family, Josh's upbringing was characterized by a strong bond between him and his mother.

    • A Unique Co-pilot Partnership: Mother and Son's Unconventional RelationshipThrough comedy, Josh and his mother found solace, control, and a sense of belonging amidst their challenges, creating a unique and unconventional family dynamic.

Josh Peck and his mother had a unique partnership-like relationship. Being raised by a single mother, Josh felt like he was immediately elevated to a copilot role, where they both played different roles depending on the circumstances. They described their relationship as more of a startup than a traditional family, where they took turns being in charge. Despite facing challenges, such as Josh's weight and feeling different, they found solace in comedy. Comedy served as a superpower and a distraction for them, allowing them to control the energy of a room and endear people to them. Sitcoms, in particular, provided an escape and projected a healthy family dynamic that Josh longed to be a part of.

    • The Role of Comedy and Food in Seeking Comfort and EscapeOur emotions can significantly influence our relationship with food, leading to certain behaviors that serve as coping mechanisms for seeking relief and distraction.

Josh Peck found a sense of escape and comfort in watching comedy shows during his childhood. It served as a distraction from his discomfort and emotional struggles. Becoming an actor was like a way for him to express gratitude towards the shows that helped him through that time. Steven Bartlett also discusses his own experience with food as a psychological and medicinal tool. He brings up the notion of actors smoking as a substitute for seeking emotional relief, showing how certain behaviors can be used as coping mechanisms. This conversation highlights the connection between one's emotions and their relationship with food, and how external factors can play a role in seeking comfort and escape.

    • Understanding the Role of Food in Self-Medication and Addiction: A Conversation on Coping Mechanisms and Unaddressed IssuesFood can often be used as a way to ease pain or seek short-term pleasure, but in the long run, it can lead to more pain and unaddressed underlying issues. External success does not always heal internal wounds.

Our relationship with food can often be used as a form of self-medication or coping mechanism for deeper underlying issues. Josh Peck discusses how food became a way for him to ease pain, but ultimately caused more pain in the long run. Steven Bartlett highlights the paradox of addiction, where seeking short-term pleasure through food or other substances can lead to long-term unhappiness and unaddressed issues. This conversation also touches on the idea that many achievements and talents are born out of a desire to impress or gain approval from others, such as parents. However, it is important to recognize that external success does not always heal internal wounds or fulfill our deepest needs.

    • Finding a Path in Comedy and Acting Against Financial HardshipsSeize opportunities and follow your passion, even in unlikely circumstances or when faced with doubts and obstacles.

Pursuing a career in comedy or acting may not always seem like a reasonable path, especially when faced with financial hardships. However, for Josh Peck, a chance opportunity to audition for a performing arts high school changed his perspective. Being surrounded by talented individuals, who were both studying and finding success in the industry, made him realize that it was possible to make a living doing what he loved. At just 12 years old, he felt a suspicion that this could be a long-term gig. Eventually, acting became his way out of his difficult circumstances and a means to contribute to his family financially. This conversation highlights the importance of seizing opportunities, even when they may seem unlikely, and following one's passion despite any doubts or obstacles.

    • The Role of Circumstances and Struggle in Shaping our JourneyOur circumstances and struggles can play a significant role in shaping our future, highlighting the importance of understanding the impact they have on our journey.

Circumstances and struggle can shape our path and lead us to our mission. Josh Peck's early involvement in show business was a result of his unique upbringing and circumstances, where his talent for performing was nurtured by his mother. His experience was non-traditional and required significant sacrifices, such as uprooting their lives to pursue opportunities. On the other hand, Steven Bartlett had a more traditional adolescence and upbringing with a stable household and a different set of experiences. Both paths have their merits, but it is important to recognize how circumstances and struggle can play a role in shaping our future. The conversation also highlights how trauma and difficult experiences can contribute to creativity and brilliance, even though they are not something we would wish upon others. Furthermore, the conversation sheds light on the misconception that success in the entertainment industry guarantees financial security, emphasizing the need to consider the financial aspects of a career. Overall, this conversation underscores the importance of understanding the impact of circumstances, struggle, and financial considerations in shaping one's journey.

    • Challenging Misconceptions and Clarifying Financial Realities in the Entertainment IndustryIt is important to challenge assumptions and provide transparency about financial realities to help people understand the choices and decisions made in the entertainment industry.

Josh Peck's book served as a way for him to reflect on his life and clarify any misunderstandings about his career. He wanted to address the assumption that he made millions of dollars from his work on Drake and Josh, when in reality, he made about $100,000 a year for the four years of the show. This realization led him to be passionate about finding more work and taking care of his financial future. Steven Bartlett, understanding the context, emphasized the importance of providing this clarity to help people understand the choices and decisions made after the show ended. Overall, the conversation highlights the need to challenge misconceptions and provide transparency about financial realities in the entertainment industry.

    • Transforming Lives Through Health and Lifestyle ChangesTaking control of one's health requires a conscious decision to change, a supportive network, self-reflection, and small daily changes. Addressing the psychological and emotional aspects leads to personal growth and fulfillment.

Taking control of one's health and making positive lifestyle changes can have a transformative impact. Steven Bartlett and Josh Peck discussed their own experiences with weight loss and self-improvement. Josh Peck emphasized the importance of making a conscious decision to change and the power of having a supportive network, including therapists. He also highlighted the role of self-reflection and writing in shifting perspectives and understanding oneself better. Josh's journey involved letting go of anger and negative emotions, and gradually making small changes every day. This conversation underscores the significance of addressing the psychological and emotional aspects of our relationship with food and body image, and the potential for personal growth and fulfillment that comes with it.

    • The Consequences of Avoiding Root CausesTemporary relief from struggles can have long-term consequences. Addressing root causes and working through underlying issues is essential for true healing and personal growth.

Addressing the effects without addressing the root causes of our struggles can lead to temporary relief but long-term consequences. Josh Peck shared his experience of losing weight but still harboring self-hating thoughts. He realized that he had unresolved pain and emotional weight that he had been carrying for a long time. Seeking solace in drinking and drugs provided a temporary escape but caused damage to his relationships and work. Steven Bartlett highlighted the importance of understanding the true nature of self-hatred and its impact on our lives. It is essential to address the root causes and work through the underlying issues rather than relying on temporary solutions. Only by facing and resolving these issues can true healing and personal growth occur.

    • Overcoming Addiction by Addressing Underlying Issues and Taking ActionIt is essential to address underlying emotional and psychological issues that drive addictive behaviors and take action during moments of realization to lead a fulfilling life.

Josh Peck's struggle with alcohol and drugs stemmed from a deeper issue of feeling inadequate and constantly searching for something to fill a void within himself. He realized this at the age of 21, in a moment of clarity after experiencing success at the Sundance Film Festival. Even when everything seemed to be going right, he still didn't feel like enough. This highlights the importance of addressing underlying emotional and psychological issues that drive addictive behaviors. It also emphasizes the need to take action during moments of realization, as life's challenges and catastrophes can serve as temporary wake-up calls. By acknowledging and working through these emotional states, individuals can find healthier ways to cope and ultimately lead fulfilling lives.

    • How Alcoholics Anonymous Helped Josh Peck Turn His Life Around and Maintain SobrietyFinding the right support system and program, like Alcoholics Anonymous, can be instrumental in an individual's journey towards recovery and personal growth.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) played a significant role in helping Josh Peck turn his life around and maintain sobriety for the past 15 years. AA is a 12-step program that provides support and guidance for individuals struggling with alcohol addiction. It offers ancient truths repackaged in a way that resonates with people like Josh, helping them address their character defects, bad patterns, and harmful habits. The program emphasizes concepts like gratitude, surrender, acceptance, self-esteem through esteem acts, and restraint of pen and tongue. For Josh, AA proved to be effective in improving his well-being and quickly making him feel better. This conversation highlights the importance of finding the right support system and program that works for each individual's unique journey towards recovery and personal growth.

    • Finding Forgiveness and Understanding Through PerspectiveGaining perspective on our parents' lives can help us find closure, forgiveness, and understanding. Our experiences and emotions are unique, and it is important to acknowledge and address our own struggles rooted in deeper emotional issues.

Forgiveness and understanding can come from gaining perspective. Josh Peck, despite feeling anger and resentment towards his absent father, took the initiative to learn about his father's life through his siblings and found a sense of closure. Seeing his father's positive relationships with others allowed Josh to forgive him and acknowledge that his father had flaws but also had the capacity to be a good father to others. This realization helped Josh come to terms with his own struggles and addictions, understanding that they were rooted in deeper emotional issues. Furthermore, Josh highlights that his story is not unique, reminding us that everyone's experiences and emotions are different, even when it comes to absent fathers.

    • The Importance of Self-Parenting and Filling in the Gaps in Upbringing and RelationshipsRegardless of our parental structure, everyone has gaps in their upbringing. Self-parenting and actively working towards personal growth are important for filling in those gaps and improving our relationships.

Everyone has gaps in their upbringing and personal relationships, regardless of their parental structure. Josh Peck highlights the importance of self-parenting and filling in those gaps as part of growing up. He acknowledges that even with a perfect parental structure, there will always be spots that were missed or experiences that have shaped one's perspective. Furthermore, Peck shares his personal journey of filling in the gaps related to his father figure and how it impacted his relationships. This conversation emphasizes the need for self-awareness and actively working towards personal growth, regardless of one's background or circumstances.

    • The Role of Relationships in Personal Growth and ChangeMeaningful relationships and professional help are invaluable in overcoming avoidance and attachment issues, leading to personal growth and healthier relationships. Real transformation happens through connections and real-life experiences.

Personal growth and change require both individual work and the influence of meaningful relationships. Josh Peck and Steven Bartlett discuss their experiences with avoidance and attachment issues, highlighting the importance of finding someone who can help challenge and change negative patterns. They emphasize that through therapy, self-awareness, and the presence of supportive individuals, they were able to overcome their avoidant tendencies and develop healthier relationships. Additionally, Peck mentions the value of having a child to further deepen personal growth and selflessness. The conversation stresses that while personal development can be pursued individually, it is through relationships and real-life experiences that true transformation occurs.

    • Embracing Decency, Spirituality, and Relationships for a Fulfilling LifeThe key to a good life lies in the qualities of decency, spirituality, and strong relationships, rather than material possessions or impressive jobs. Taking action and being grateful are also crucial for a fulfilling life.

The key to a good life lies in being deeply decent, having a good spiritual life, and being a good partner, father, and son. It's not about material possessions or impressive jobs, although those things don't hurt. Josh Peck emphasizes that implementing these qualities into his life has led to a fulfilling and overpaid life. He also acknowledges the challenges of dealing with negative thoughts and feelings, but emphasizes the importance of taking action to break the cycle. Instead of trying to think his way out of struggles, he has learned that acting his way into right thinking is more effective. Furthermore, Josh expresses deep gratitude and admiration for his mother, acknowledging her role in shaping his life and being a single mother.

Moment 171: STOP DOING THIS! It's Ruining Your Sex Life

Moment 171: STOP DOING THIS! It's Ruining Your Sex Life
In this moment, world-renowned philosopher and thinker Alain De Botton discusses how communication can lead to a better sex life. Alain says sex is like a mirror to the relationship as a whole. If something is wrong with a couples sex life, it’s usually a symptom of a wider problem. He says that a first step towards a more fulfilling sex life is reflecting on how you are as a partner. Being open about yourself in a relationship is the best way to create mutual trust, which means that you can ‘tease’ out any issue in a relationship. This then leads to being open with one another sexually. Moment 170: The Scientific Method For Unstoppable Confidence: Professor Steve Peters
In this moment, elite sport psychologist, Professor Steve Peters discusses the way to overcome low self-esteem. Often low self-esteem manifests itself outwardly in abusive relationships, the wrong career, and impulsive behaviours. Dr Peters says these are ‘maladaptive coping strategies’, where you are punishing yourself, thinking that you don’t deserve to treat yourself well, as you believe that you fundamentally don’t deserve happiness. Dr Peters says the solution can be as simple as getting a blank piece of paper and writing down who you want to be, and what behaviours you want to have. He says that this exercise works, as once you remove the interference of your mind, this person you hope to become is actually you, as you are defining yourself. Moment 169: CIA Spy Reveals How To AVOID Media Manipulation & Brainwashing: Andrew Bustamante

Moment 169: CIA Spy Reveals How To AVOID Media Manipulation & Brainwashing: Andrew Bustamante
In this moment, the former CIA intelligence officer Andrew Bustamante discusses the crucial techniques of manipulation, which he describes as a core part of CIA training. Andrew  introduces the R.I.C.E. analogy, which stands for Reward, Ideology, Coercion, and Ego. This framework is essential for understanding the motivations of others, allowing you to connect with them, build relationships, and influence their actions. According to Andrew, reward involves anything the other person desires, while ideology reflects the person’s core beliefs and is the most powerful element of the acronym. Coercion involves using negative behaviours on someone such as guilt or blackmail, and ego relates to how the other person sees themselves. Andrew translates this manipulation technique to marketing. He suggests that by sending targeted messages to your audience and assessing their responses, you gain insights into their ideology, providing you with useful information for future sales. What's up my Get Uncomfortable compadre!

If you haven't yet, head to the review section of this podcast and leave us a rating & review if you find value in the show OR share the show with someone you know would enjoy it.

Today is the second episode in a series I think is extremely needed in society. It will be about breath; the physical action, the psychological effect & problems that arise with improper breathing mechanics, posture effects, and more.

I realized severe migraines I was having were related directly to improper breathing patterns and I hope this series helps you or someone in your life find relief from chronic anxiety or a multitude of physical ailments.

The book I mentioned is The Body Keeps the Score and the author is Bessel van der Kolk, MD.

I had what Paul Chek calls an inverted breathing pattern and its extremely detrimental to your health over the long run. Here is an article and video Paul put out to help correct an inverted breathing pattern and I cover these feedback methods in today's episode.

Be sure to subscribe and stay tuned for the rest of this holisitc healing series!
