    ABOUT SHEILA
    In 20 years of clinical medicine, I took care of a lot of very sick children.  But to an even greater extent, I saw kids with lifestyle-induced problems.  Poor sleep, unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy weight and frequently a lot of depression and anxiety were keeping these kids from living in their best health.

    A child cannot be expected to change their lifestyle habits by themselves.  Children need their parent's and caregiver's help.  And parents need help figuring out first, exactly what to do and then, how to actually do it.

    This is what I help parents do.  I help parents know exactly what to do to improve their child's health and I teach them the tools and skills they need to fully support their child and themselves along their journeys to better health.

    As a Pediatrician and Obesity medicine physician as well as a Certified Life and Weight Coach, I help children by empowering their parents to be the parents they truly want to be.

    Episode 128: Filling the Gaps in the Australian Dietary Guidelines for Children

    Episode 128: Filling the Gaps in the Australian Dietary Guidelines for Children

    Welcome to the Natural Super Kids Podcast! In today's episode, we're diving deep into a controversial topic – Australian Dietary Guidelines. For this episode, we will be looking at three specific guidelines: The National Health and Medical Research Council’s Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, Nutrition Guidelines for School Tuck Shops, and Health Direct’s Healthy Eating for Kids.

    Australian Dietary Guidelines are once again sparking discussion because one of our members in the Natural Super Kids Klub encountered a surprising roadblock when submitting a Bliss Balls recipe to her child's school tuck shop. The recipe, which included coconut oil, was deemed a "red food" and rejected due to school canteen guidelines favouring vegetable oils over natural, solid oils like coconut oil.

    In this episode, I will discuss:

    • The challenges faced by parents when it comes to meeting their kids’ nutritional needs;
    • Flaws in Health Direct's Guide on Healthy Eating for Kids:
      • Emphasis on a large amount of cereal and grain foods;
      • Does not consider adequately consider new research on saturated fats;
      • Preference for processed vegetable oils over healthy natural oils;
      • The misinformation around coconut oil and its surprising benefits on HDL cholesterol.
    • Specific issues identified with the Guidelines for Healthy Foods and Drinks Supplied in School Canteens;
      • Perplexing categories used: green, amber, and red;
      • The use of intense sweeteners in “green” drinks;
      • Preference for vegetable oils rich in Omega-6 fatty acids and the implications on children’s health;
      • Omission of essential fat-soluble nutrients when opting for low-fat dairy;
      • Banning salt in school lunches, despite its necessity in nutrient balance.
    • What’s missing in Australian Dietary Guidelines, and where the focus should be redirected;
    • Her recommendations for healthy feeding practices for kids;

    As parents, it's our responsibility to question and explore dietary recommendations to ensure our kids get the best nutrition possible. If you're passionate about providing optimal nutrition for your kids and want practical tips to overcome challenges, this episode is a must-listen.

    58-Natalie Pelto - Proactive Nutrition Tips for Kids' Health

    Parents, this episode is especially for you!

    • Do you have a picky eater in the family?
    • Does the thought of mealtime with your picky eater cause a wave of anxiety for you?
    • Do you want to know how to better approach mealtime in a fun way to help your picky eater expand his/her palette and improve their nutrition levels?

    Well today, you are in the right place.  This week's podcast episode features Natalie Pelto, a mom and former healthcare worker with over 20 years of experience.   Natalie shares the incredible story of her son, his autism diagnosis at the age of 2 and how she helped him overcome that diagnosis by the age of 8 with proper nutrition.

    Natalie will touch on the relationship between childhood toxicity, the gut-brain connection for kids, and nutrition for autism and cancer patients.  There's something here for ANYONE who is or has a picky eater in the house.
