SLO MO REWIND: Alain de Botton on How to Keep Your Partner Happy

SLO MO REWIND: Alain de Botton on How to Keep Your Partner Happy

Continuing our love and relationships series, we revisit my chat with the incredible Alain de Botton.

One of the most listened episodes on Slo Mo, I and the British-Swiss philosopher, Alain de Botton, dive deep into one of my favorite topics: Love.

Alain de Botton is a philosopher and writer of essayistic books that have been described as a "philosophy of everyday life." He’s written on love, travel, architecture and literature. His books have been bestsellers in 30 countries and have sold millions of copies. Alain also started and helps to run a school in London called The School of Life, dedicated to a new vision of education. His latest book, published in September 2019, is a collection of essays written for The School of Life, titled The School of Life: An Emotional Education.

I love talking about love, just as much as I'm happy to discuss happiness. Alain's body and scope of work is so vast, I decided to focus this conversation entirely on love, sex, and relationships. I'm so glad I did.

    We will revisit:

    • What is love? Alain's definition of love: 'when two people meet in their raw condition.'
    • How the opposite extreme of love is Loneliness, not Hatred.
    • How Life is a desperate emergency, and if we can just admit that, things open up.
    • Why Christianity gives a privileged role to those who suffer
    • One of the most honest takes on sex you'll ever hear
    • How we're always trying to get our life as close as possible to our true reality
    • If we're all imperfect, doesn't that make imperfection perfect?
    • How we've replaced happiness with "fun" just as we've replaced love with "romance"
    • The contradictions in love and how they're only glaring because they violate a script or story we expect from our relationship
    • How we shouldn't be held accountable for what we feel, but rather the actions we take based on those feelings.
    • Reinterpreting the typical disaster scenario in a relationship when one partner cheats on another.
    • Humanity's transition from demonizing sex to trying to understand it
    • The differences (or lack thereof) between male and female in love and sex
    • Sexual fetishes and their unique place in couple connections
    • Undertakers and nurses as beacons of acceptance
    • The game of life is trying to find connections
    • The ironic outcome of jealousy's intentions
    • How to keep your partner faithful
    • Alain's love advice to my daughter
    • Coping with the feeling of being rushed into marriage as a woman
    • What "God is love" really means
    • Seeing your partner as an Adorable Idiot rather than just a regular idiot

Dr. Stephen C. Meyer - How to Disprove the Theory of Evolution and the Scientific Case for God

Dr. Stephen C. Meyer - How to Disprove the Theory of Evolution and the Scientific Case for God

Today’s guest is one of my most anticipated ever, Dr. Stephen C. Meyer, who is openly contesting much of what is assumed about evolution and natural selection.

Stephen received his Ph.D. in the philosophy of science from the University of Cambridge. A former geophysicist and college professor, he now directs Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture in Seattle.

He has authored the New York Times best seller Darwin’s Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design and Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design, which was named a Book of the Year by the Times of London Literary Supplement in 2009. Stephen’s books and research address the deepest mystery surrounding the origin of human and animal life, particularly the origin of biological information necessary to produce it.

In his latest book, The Return of the God Hypothesis, Stephen presents groundbreaking scientific evidence of the existence of God, based on breakthroughs in physics, cosmology, and biology.

It’s no secret that I too used a bit of math, physics and cosmology to try and show that our universe and everything in it is not the result of randomness but rather the product of intricate design. (Chapter 14 of Solve for Happy)

Give us a chance today to take you through the possibility of the existence of a divine designer. This surely is a topic that, regardless of how busy you are today, is worth taking a little bit of time to slow down.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • Political correctness in science.
    • What led Stephen to dive into his work?
    • The highly unlikely probability for evolution to generate new species in such time.
    • The bike lock analogy.
    • DNA is literally like software code, and therefore someone must have programmed it.
    • Information is the hallmark of intelligent activity and inference to the best explanation.
    • Darwin’s Doubt and the Cambrian Explosion.
    • What did Darwin get right?
    • The return of the God hypothesis: who is the designer?

Peter Russell - Embracing the Natural Pace of Human Life

Peter Russell - Embracing the Natural Pace of Human Life

Today's guest is the speaker, teacher, and author, Peter Russell, a leading thinker on consciousness and contemporary spirituality. He has studied theoretical physics, experimental psychology, and computer science at the University of Cambridge, and meditation and Eastern Philosophy in India. Talk about refining both the left and right brains.

Peter coined the term "global brain" with his 1980's bestseller of the same name in which he predicted the Internet and the impact it would have on humanity. He is also a pioneer of personal growth programs, having taught corporations and senior management on principles of creativity, stress management and sustainable development. He is the author of ten books, including Waking Up in Time and From Science to God: A Physicist's Journey into the Mystery of Consciousness.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • One of my favorite topics as of late: slowing down
    • Just how small humanity's collective and individual lifespan is on a universal scale
    • How culture is exponentially accelerating, figuratively and literally
    • The resistance that all forces traveling at fast speeds eventually reach, including us
    • Taking more responsibility for ourselves against the belief that the more you have, the happier you’ll be
    • Reaching a state of happiness without conditions
    • The ideal pace at which humanity can move
    • The struggle to remain optimistic about the evolution of the Global Brain
    • The Network of Humanity
    • Science's biggest questions: What is the universe made of? What is consciousness?
    • "Consciousness is that which knows, but we don’t know what consciousness is"
    • From Science to God - Peter’s journey from hardcore scientist to "believer"
    • Convincing the neuroscience community to study consciousness (see Dr. Dan Siegel)
    • Why referring to God as a noun is a misconception in Peter's view

Alain de Botton (Part 2) - How to Deal with Jealousy and Keep Your Partner Faithful

In Part 2 of my interview with British-Swiss philosopher, Alain de Botton, we continue our conversation - which has since become one of my favorites - on all things love, extending into dating dynamics, dealing with jealousy, the confusing language of sex, and God's role in all this.

Check out Part 1 here if you haven't already. It's essential listening if you want to understand what makes a quality relationship that results in more love and less loneliness. (While you're at it, listen to my conversation with Lynne Twist to hear how she's maintained a happy marriage for 53 years.)
