Allegra Frank makes Squishheart: Grey’s Last Bounty

Allegra Frank makes Squishheart: Grey’s Last Bounty

Allegra Frank, renowned journalist, critic, and oreo connoisseur, joins Jenna to craft an adorable, hard-hitting game with the prompts:

    • squishy
    • werewolves
    • visual novel

Eschewing the normal player-romance offerings of visual novels, they craft a game where you matchmake NPCs and solve a dark mystery of your own past, come back to haunt you. Also there are some non-branded Squishmallow integrations that give the game a bit of a texture. A squish texture.

Turns out, love was the greatest mystery of all.

Check out Allegra Frank on Twitter @legsfrank and read her work on The Daily Beast. Find Space Dunk Oreos in your local grocer.

Dr. Moiya McTier makes Beadle's Awakening

Dr. Moiya McTier makes Beadle's Awakening

Dr. Moiya McTier, host of Exolore and Pale Blue Pod, joins Jenna to make a 2-player Unraveled-alike game based on the worldbuilding they did on the most recent episode of Exolore. You don't have to listen to that first, but it will help!

This craft-based world is entirely self-contained, and features both organic beetles and craft-based automatons. With that core concept, they use the word Anarchy to develop a truly delighful platforming game with collectible stained-glass puzzle pieces, kniting minigames, and an educational mode where you can really learn to craft!

Justin Green makes Chansey Boofy Tangrowth

Justin Green makes Chansey Boofy Tangrowth

Justin Green came here entirely focused on one goal: to make the most scattered and unhinged game premise possible. Thankfully Jenna totally tamed that impulse and they came up with a very normal game about being a good or bad therapist and a pokemon and navigating the American healthcare system and maybe evolving if you are fully cured of your trauma. And all just from the prompts:

    • character creator
    • boofy
    • environment narrative/organizing

Wow! Sounds like everyone was super focused and on-task this episode!

Listen to Justin Green as game master and world builder on Burnt Cook Book Party, a biweekly comedy actual play podcast where four heroes race gainst time to prevent a war... and to prevent a time loop from resetting the whole game! Yes it is as unhinged as this episode is, but in different ways.

Eric Silver makes Agatha Christie's Raildriver

Podcast maven Eric Silver joins Jenna Stoeber to discuss some no-longer-timely news about card games, and leverage that into the next big MONEY MAKER. They are assisted by the prompts:

    • train travel
    • people who don't like to talk on the phone
    • card game

Big Game Hunger hasn't really been about turning a profit with our incredible game ideas so far, but how else are we going to keep this boat afloat? That's right, by cashing in and selling out! Time to get a chunk of that Agatha Christie estate.

    2021-2023

2021-2023: An era marked by significant upheavals and unexpected twists in the gaming world. The industry, in 2021, contended with the aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic, facing challenges from software delays to a global semiconductor shortage, leading to game postponements and cancellations. Amid this turmoil, the retro gaming sector flourished, with vintage games reaching record auction prices, though concerns of market manipulation cast shadows. 2022 pivoted to consolidation, headlined by Microsoft's colossal acquisition of Activision. While giants pursued acquisitions, the demise of E3 marked the end of an expo era, and EA's return to single-player games, highlighted by successes like Dead Space and Skate, offered a silver lining. 2023 began with the gaming community at an inflection point, with Google Stadia's shutdown and the closure of the Nintendo eShop triggering debates on the trajectory of cloud gaming and digital platforms. As consolidation remains a dominant trend, the industry anticipates emerging innovations and challenges that will shape its destiny. We extend our gratitude to our viewers for accompanying us on this exhilarating exploration of the ever-transforming gaming universe, with your unwavering support propelling our passion.

    2017-2018

    2017-2018

The years 2017-2018 presented a roller coaster of highs and lows for the gaming world. In 2017, Nintendo's Switch revitalized the company's image, while the loot box debacle, with Battlefront 2 at its heart, ignited fierce debates on game monetization. This controversial gaming mechanic not only drew ire from players but also caught the attention of global regulatory bodies. Acquisitions like IGN's purchase of Humble Bundle, and Funko Pop's unfortunate IPO, spotlighted the business machinations behind the scenes. Yet, amidst these industry tremors, retro revivals like Sonic Mania showcased the enduring power of nostalgia. The unexpected success story of Okami highlighted the game's journey from an initial commercial disappointment to a cult classic. Fast forward to 2018, the battle royale genre, spearheaded by PUBG and Fortnite, swept the globe. Epic Games' foray into the digital distribution domain with the Epic Games Store challenged existing giants, promising better deals for developers. Simultaneously, China's freeze on new game approvals sent ripples through the industry, emphasizing the country's growing influence in the gaming sector. However, amidst the gold rush, the darker side of the industry emerged, with studio closures amplifying calls for unionization. These tumultuous years posed critical questions about the future of game design, monetization, distribution, and the very structure of the industry itself.

    2013-2014

In 2013-2014, the gaming industry experienced seismic shifts, both in terms of market dynamics and cultural significance. Mobile gaming exploded, with titles like Candy Crush Saga raking in astounding revenue, forcing the industry to reimagine game design and monetization. The Chinese gaming market, led by giants like Tencent, surged, challenging established Western and Japanese powerhouses. Esports events, like The International 2013, elevated competitive gaming to unprecedented heights. Meanwhile, the unveiling of the 8th console generation spurred excitement and innovation. By 2014, the industry's valuation highlighted its massive global influence. Nintendo introduced the New 3DS and Amiibo, emphasizing their dedication to innovative experiences. Indie titles like Octodad and Jackbox Games' party packs introduced fresh gaming experiences. Tech behemoths Amazon and Facebook entered the fray, acquiring Twitch and Oculus respectively, signaling their commitment to gaming's future. Reflecting on these transformative years, key questions arise about the impact of emerging markets, tech giants' influence, and the evolving cultural conversations surrounding gaming.

    2009-2010

    2009-2010

Between 2009 and 2010, the video game industry underwent monumental shifts. In 2009, as the world grappled with a recession, gaming conventions proliferated, transforming gaming from niche pastime to mainstream phenomenon. The rise of casual gaming, exemplified by the Wii's overwhelming success, signaled a demographic shift, pushing companies to reevaluate their design and marketing strategies. Yet, alongside triumphs came challenges, as evidenced by the Xbox 360's hardware issues. Controversies also emerged, like EA's "Project Ten Dollar" which aimed to curb used game sales but sparked debates about game value. Meanwhile, 2010 marked the indie game scene's further ascent, with initiatives like Humble Bundle and platforms like Kickstarter supporting indie developers. New gaming horizons were also unlocked with motion controls like Kinect and PlayStation Move. This period encapsulated the gaming world's rapid transformation, from the rudimentary games of the early 2000s to the technologically advanced, socially integrated, and diverse landscape of 2010. The industry faced both the excitement of evolution and the challenges of addressing the varied desires of an expanding gamer demographic.

    1993-1996

    1993-1996

From 1993 to 1996, the gaming industry underwent a metamorphosis, driven by technological advancements and shifts in player demographics. As the maturing audience craved more intricate narratives, developers answered the call, transitioning from cartoonish titles to thought-provoking themes. The period witnessed the rise of CD-based games, igniting fiercer competition among industry giants like Nintendo, SEGA, and Sony. The advent of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) marked a significant self-regulatory step, while the first E3 solidified its role as an annual gaming spectacle. The epochal shift from 2D to 3D, propelled by powerful Graphics Processors, redefined gaming immersion and mechanics. Amidst these transformative years, the PlayStation emerged as a dominant force, reshaping market dynamics and setting new standards for console gaming.

In 1993, the industry leaned towards mature content, with congressional hearings aiming to balance creative freedom and responsibility, growing anticipation around Nintendo's "Project Reality," and a behind-the-scenes look with David Sheff's "Game Over." 1994 marked an era of maturation and innovation, highlighted by the establishment of the ESRB, the unveiling of the Nintendo Ultra 64, and the onset of digital journalism through Game Zero magazine. 1995 saw heightened competition and community engagement, propelled by the rise of CD-based gaming via Sony's PlayStation, the inaugural E3, and the undying rivalry between SEGA and Nintendo. By 1996, the dawn of the 3D era was unmistakable, with Graphics Processors transforming game design, the PlayStation emerging dominant amidst the decline of several home consoles, and the industry bidding adieu to 2D, embracing the immersive realms of 3D gaming.

4Player Podcast #750 - The Cosmic Gumbo Show (Tchia, Diablo IV Beta, Exoprimal Beta, Redfall Preview Coverage, and More!)

It has been quite the week in the games industry and it's got everybody feelin spicy! We've got a bevy of big point updates for our Fantasy Critic and some big headlines including a rumored release window for Spider-Man 2 and the acquisition of Night Dive Studios by Atari! But all of that pales in comparison to the dust kicked up by the recent Redfall preview coverage which continues to be one of the most divisive but compelling games on the horizon. In the second segment, we manage to find conflict in Tchia despite it being the most wholesome and delightful games of the year thus far. Krispy takes us on a journey through the Diablo IV beta and Chris Davis claims that Exoprimal could be a potential sleeper hit for the year after his time with the beta.

Quena's Requiem - featuring Cesar Suarez

Conversation with Audio Director-turned-Creative Director Cesar Suarez, as he talks about Eolia, a first-person fantasy-adventure virtual reality music game, and Quena's Requiem, its first DLC project, with Cesar at the helm. Cesar also talks about his role at The Berklee College of Music, and being a freelancer and father of a toddler... whew?! Hosted by Jim Bonney. Music by Simone Scazzocchio, from the soundtrack for Eolia, by Rotu Entertainment.

    4Player Podcast #740 - The 2022 Awards Show

Another year comes to a close but it's been great! As always, we cap off the year with our annual awards show which gives us a chance to honor a whole bunch of games in over 14 categories! We trimmed some of the fat this year and introduced some new wrinkles which we think make for a leaner (even if it is nearly 4-hours), better show! We hope some of you find the inspiration you need to try some of the games featured on this episode and of course, we hope you will join us in 2023 for another year with a LOT to talk about!

4Player Podcast #737 - The Extremely Hardcore Show (God of War Ragnarok, Somerville, Tactics Ogre Reborn, and More!)

With the launch of God of War Ragnarok, 2022 finally has one of it's biggest AAA releases of the year. With that in mind, we kick things off with the most important questions... Why doesn't Kratos just go somewhere else? Once the big questions are answered, we delve into the nitty gritty to find out how we're feeling about it thus far. Nick provides a quick update (and PSA) on Signalis and talks about his playthrough of the long awaited Somerville. Brad talks about Tactics Ogre Reborn which is an odd duck in that it is the 2nd complete remake of Tactics Ogre; A classic grid-based strategy RPG that launched in the late 90s. All of this is of course against the backdrop of Twitter loudly and swiftly burning to the ground.

4Player Podcast #735 - The Rat Battle Show (A Plague Tale: Requiem, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, Bone's Cafe, Spooky Game Roundup, and More!)

Rats. There's lots of them this week. Thousands of them! Nick and Chris discuss the impressive technological and design leap made in Asobo's A Plague Tale: Requiem - a game that Chris Davis is convinced will sit atop his Game of the Year list this year. Brad acknowledges the charm and skill on display in Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope but laments what could have been if Nintendo had decided to pursue other Rabbids crossovers. Nolan charms the group with Bone's Cafe - another delightful (and morbid) indie gem that combines necromancy with the pressures of Overcooked. In the second segment, the group discusses the announcement of a Witcher remake and Nick rattles off a list of impressive horrors games from his most recent stream including In Sound Mind, Mother, Love Sam, and more!

4Player Podcast #731 - The Arcology Show (The Last of Us: Part I, Nintendo Direct Recap, Assassin's Creed News, and More!)

4Player Podcast #731 - The Arcology Show (The Last of Us: Part I, Nintendo Direct Recap, Assassin's Creed News, and More!)

In this jam packed episode, we do our best to recap the boat-load of news that made headlines in the past week. Ubisoft laid out their plans for the next 4 Assassin's Creed titles, Disney announced Amy Hennig's new Marvel game, and Nintendo and Sony both hosted Direct events featuring tons of announcements. In impressions, Nick discusses the controversial but impressive remake of 'The Last of Us,' Chris Davis discusses 'The Ascent,' and Krispy delivers his analysis of 'Immortality' in true Krispy fashion. It's such a jam packed show that we didn't even have time for feedback or community questions (sorry!). Regardless, it's an exciting time for video games and that's always welcome news.
