122: The Costly Truth of Ignoring Estate Planning Like Jay Leno

122: The Costly Truth of Ignoring Estate Planning Like Jay Leno

You may have heard the recent news that Jay Leno filed a conservatorship over his wife, Mavis Leno’s estate. The couple does not have an estate plan, and his goal is to gain special permission from the court to set up a plan for both of them. As Kirsten and Madison point out, the main issue is not what happens if Mavis dies but instead if Jay were to die first. Given that Mavis is already incapacitated, who will manage their assets and decision-making? We hope you will join us for this discussion that underscores just how important it is to have an estate plan in place to avoid the costly and very public conservatorship court proceedings, among other protections.

    Time-stamped Show Notes:

    0:00 Introduction

0:53 To kick things off, Madison is shedding light on conservatorship and how it applies to the Jay Leno court proceedings.

1:57 Jay and his wife Mavis have been married for a long time and don’t have any children. He is her heir if she were to die first, so why is he worried about an estate plan now?

3:36 This isn’t the typical way to go about estate planning, and it certainly isn’t ideal. Listen in a Madison discusses some of the issues with the approach Jay Leno is taking.

The Louisiana native also comes from a musical family, with brothers—Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason—becoming acclaimed jazz musicians; and his father, the patriarch Ellis Marsalis, Jr., a jazz pianist and educator himself. How is he able to sustain such an artistic excellence in musicianship despite the racial tension and political polarization happening in this country? Stay tuned as I SEE U Host Eddie Robinson speaks unguarded with legendary composer and bandleader, Branford Marsalis. He talks candidly about the motivation behind his music; how his father, who died in 2020 from COVID-19 complications, helped inspire his approach to confronting racism; and what he really thinks about the future of American democracy.

    36 - GLENN CAMPBELL: I'LL BE ME w Wimps

    36 - GLENN CAMPBELL: I'LL BE ME w Wimps

Paco and George are joined by Seattle band Wimps to discuss the 2014 Glenn Campbell documentary, I'll Be Me by James Keach. Matt, Rachel, and Dave were moved for personal and professional reasons by the story of the final tour of country star Glenn Campbell, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2011. We talk about speech pathology, touring history, family, 7 stages of Alzheimer's, and memory strategies. The Washington Post's Ann Hornaday wrote that " 'I’ll Be Me' is an elevating experience, inviting the audience to bear witness to Campbell’s courage, humor and spiritual strength. His story may make for a tough movie, but it’s an important and triumphant one, as well." Seattle's Wimps is a three-piece comprised of scene veterans Rachel Ratner (Butts) on guitar and lead vocals, Matt Nyce (Meth Teeth) on bass and backing vocals, and Dave Ramm (The Intelligence) on drums. Wimps serve their own brand of rapid-fire punk with a smattering of lo-fi post punk guitar work to create an angular, slightly off-kilter blast. Ratner lyrically twists otherwise common day-to-day woes into relatable tales of struggle shout-sung call and response stabs that champion boredom, laziness and social anxieties with wiry riffs and punchy bass lines, propelled by the measured rhythms of drummer David Ramm. In 2015 they partnered with Kill Rock Stars and released a cassette and their sophomore album ‘Suitcase’ to praise from places like Noisey, Nerdist, AV Club, Exclaim, Norman Records, the Stranger, and more. http://www.killrockstars.com/artists/wimps **Sup Doc has created a Patreon page for those that can help out. The Baub Show: Kira Soltanovich and Suzanne Krull
