888: Marc Andreessen | Exploring the Power, Peril, and Potential of AI

888: Marc Andreessen | Exploring the Power, Peril, and Potential of AI

AI advocate Marc Andreessen joins us to clear up misconceptions about AI and discuss its potential impact on job creation, creativity, and moral reasoning.

What We Discuss with Marc Andreessen:

    • Will AI create new jobs, take our old ones outright, or amplify our ability to perform them better?
    • What role will AI play in current and future US-China relations?
    • How might AI be used to shape (or manipulate) public opinion and the economy?
    • Does AI belong in creative industries, or does it challenge (and perhaps cheapen) what it means to be human?
    • How can we safeguard our future against the possibility that AI could get smart enough to remove humanity from the board entirely?
    • And much more...

Neal Stephenson on The Future of the Metaverse

Neal Stephenson on The Future of the Metaverse

When Neal Stephenson coined “the metaverse” three decades ago, his book Snow Crash was found on the shelves of “science fiction”. While the book remains in that category, many of its concepts are now found in reality…

Fast forward to 2022, where numerous companies are now building toward their version of the metaverse, including Neal himself – working on Lamina1 – a blockchain company oriented toward creators.

While the present metaverses don’t perfectly mimic that from Stephenson’s early imagination, we get the unique opportunity to discuss the various design decisions that he’s making, but also the intersection between the metaverse and gaming, the involvement that AR/VR might play, the evolving role of IP, how artificial intelligence fits in, what he’s building and why, and where he gets all of his ideas from.

Carlo van Lienden - How to Embrace the Suck, Fight the Fake, and Prepare for a Mixed Reality

Carlo van Lienden - How to Embrace the Suck, Fight the Fake, and Prepare for a Mixed Reality

I am once again in Amsterdam on this endless quest for wisdom to talk to you about a little history and little future with one of my great friends, Carlo van Lienden. Before we begin, consider watching this podcast on YouTube instead (or as well). It heavily complements the experience with additional photos and footage. Link is below.

When I wrote Solve for Happy, my agent told me to write an evergreen,  not a big hit that quickly burns away. That has been achieved successfully by all accounts, with the book selling more copies each year than the year prior. There were two major media appearances that kicked things off. The first was my Channel 4 interview in the UK, which went viral. The second was my appearance on RTL Late Night in the Netherlands. Behind the camera of the latter was Carlo, who discovered me and brought me to the public eye in a country that has embraced me and the One Billion Happy mission without parallel.

Possessing a phenomenal work ethic and having worked in media through many pivots, Carlo can best be described in one phrase: a spotter of the truth.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • How Carlo played a major role in jumpstarting our mission.
    • Carlo's former life as a cyclist for the National Team and a resulting eating disorder.
    • How he became a cameraman instead, and why it was a very fair trade.
    • The real reason why I think I became Chief Business Officer at Google X.
    • Stoicism, and revisiting my talk with Donald Robertson (Slo Mo episodes 67 & 68)
    • How a sports psychiatrist changed his life.
    • The sheer bliss of altitude training in the Sierra Nevada and the effects on the ego.
    • Stress + Rest = Growth
    • "Embrace the suck."
    • Why Slo Mo hasn't been very slow lately.
    • The impending merge of the virtual and real worlds.
    • How do we know what's real and what's fake anymore?
    • Can we even handle the truth anymore?
    • Whatever comes our way, we need to find our place at the top of the mountain.

Blockchains, crypto, & web3: Connections, models, more

Blockchains, crypto, & web3: Connections, models, more

Blockchain, crypto, web3 – these terms get thrown around a lot and sometimes interchangeably, but what are the actual connections between them? And what are some mental models and analogies for thinking about this blossoming area of computer science?

To dig in on these topics and more, we have another crossover episode this week, part of our occasional series where we share curated episodes from other shows that we think you’ll enjoy.

This time, we’re featuring one of the first episodes from "web3 with a16z", a new show which just launched last week. Hosted by Sonal Choksi and featuring the team at a16z crypto as well as leading scientists and makers in the space, this show is about the next generation of the internet, how builders and users now have the ability to "own" pieces of the internet, unlocking a new wave of creativity and entrepreneurship. This episode features a16z crypto general partners Chris Dixon and Ali Yahya, and Tim Roughgarden, head of research at a16z crypto, in conversation with Sonal Choksi.

    Crypto, an Oral Essay

    Crypto, an Oral Essay

In this special “innovation overview” episode from April 2021, the a16z crypto team and other experts take you from the ground up of crypto and web3 — from the basics, to more recent developments, and beyond – through the lens of an oral essay with brief segments on what crypto is, how it really works, and where it’s going.

We chose this particular archive episode this week in honor of a new show that just launched: web3 with a16z. Hosted by Sonal Choksi, the previous showrunner of the a16z podcast network and longtime host of this show, and featuring the team at a16z crypto as well as leading scientists and makers in the space, this show is about the next generation of the internet, how builders and users now have the ability to "own" (web3) pieces of the internet, unlocking a new wave of creativity and entrepreneurship. The first two episodes are out this week, so check out and subscribe to “web3 with a16z” wherever you get your podcasts.

Off the Blockchain with Dr. Sandra Johnson

Off the Blockchain with Dr. Sandra Johnson

What the funge is up with crypto? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Marcia Belsky talk about the science behind cryptocurrency, NFTs, bitcoin, and the blockchain with electrical engineer Dr. Sandra Johnson.
