    It Sucks to Be 33

    It Sucks to Be 33

Jeanna Smialek, who covers the U.S. economy for The Times, will be 33 in a few weeks; she is part of a cohort born in 1990 and 1991 that makes up the peak of America’s population.

At every life stage, that microgeneration has stretched a system that was often too small to accommodate it, leaving its members — so-called peak millennials — with outsize economic power but also a fight to get ahead.

Guest: Jeanna Smialek, a U.S. economy correspondent for The New York Times.

Did Fani Willis Lie on Stand, and Alec Baldwin's Trial, with Judge Joe Brown, Marcia Clark, Mark Geragos, and Charles Cooke | Ep. 728

Megyn Kelly is joined by Judge Joe Brown, former TV host and lawyer, to discuss the relevance of when Fani Willis’ affair with Nathan Wade began, her paying Nathan Wade more than his peers, her lack of important disclosures to the court, her attitude while testifying last week, whether her comments about money could open her up to IRS violation issues, whether Willis lied while on the stand during her testimony, the key element of how she kept cash, and more. Then National Review's Charles C.W. Cooke joins to discuss President Biden finding a new way to move forward with his "student loan forgiveness" plan, his desire to override Congress and the courts, why this shows the Biden campaign and the Democrats are panicking, Biden's age as a major election issue, the death of Alexei Navalny, the Washington Post attacking Nikki Haley's high school, a biological male injuring girls in high school basketball, and more. Then it's Kelly's Court with Marcia Clark and Mark Geragos to talk about whether Gabby Petito's parents have a case against the parents of their daughter's killer Brian Laundrie, whether his parents were obligated to share what they knew, the Alec Baldwin movie set shooting case and how it will be affected by the "Rust" armorer on trial now, whose negligence will be found at fault, the orgasm cult criminal case, and more.

Why Americans are Losing Faith in College

Why Americans are Losing Faith in College
Twenty years ago, higher education was one of the most trusted institutions in America. Today, confidence in higher ed is falling among every demographic: young and old, men and women, Republicans and Democrats, those who didn't finish high school and those with framed PhDs on their wall. And it’s not just attitudes. In the fall of 2010, there were more than 18 million undergraduates enrolled in colleges and universities across the U.S. Last year, there were about 15 million undergrads. That’s a decline of roughly 16 percent. In a recent essay for the New York Times, author Paul Tough, who’s published several excellent books about college in America, wrote: “Americans have turned away from college at the same time that students in the rest of the world have been flocking to campus. Why?” Today’s guest is Paul Tough. We talk about why a noxious stew of economics, culture, and inequality has turned a surprising number of Americans against college. Who’s to blame, and what happens next? Is College Worth It?

    Is College Worth It?

New research and polling show that more and more Americans now doubt a previously unquestioned fact of U.S. life — that going to college is worth it.

Paul Tough, a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, explains why so many high-school students and their parents are souring on higher education and what it will mean for the country’s future.

Guest: Paul Tough, a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine who has written several books on inequality in education.

    Background reading:

    • Americans are losing faith in the value of college. Whose fault is that?
    • In December, Colby-Sawyer in New Hampshire reduced its tuition to $17,500 a year, from about $46,000. The cut was a recognition that few pay the list price.

Why Do Half of Young Adults Live with Their Parents?

Why Do Half of Young Adults Live with Their Parents?
The number of young adults living at home crested at 52% in July 2020, the highest number ever recorded (the former high was around 48%, following the Great Depression—yes, the 1930s). Understandably, this figure rocked the internet—and spawned a deluge of articles in the years since hypothesizing about the why and how. And while things have since “normalized” back to a level of around 47%, that figure is still—historically—high, and deserves a closer look. Where's the Millennial Middle Class?

    Where's the Millennial Middle Class?
It’s a bit of a trope that the millennial generation has had a rough go of it, economically.  After experiencing the Great Financial Crisis during their formative years, attending higher education during a massive debt-fueled student loan bubble, and entering adulthood while home prices were juiced higher and higher, the majority of millennials are now “behind pace,” financially speaking. In 2015, Pew Research conducted an interesting survey: It found that 89% of Americans considered themselves middle class. The survey then attempted to break down what middle class wealth actually looks like, landing on a median net worth of around $125,000 in today’s dollars.  I was curious how many millennials had surpassed that threshold, and as it turns out, the answer is…not many. This episode was inspired by headlines about the impending “Great Wealth Transfer,” often positioned as a solution to millennials’ money woes. But will it be? Let’s dig in.
