Rêverie: The Transcendence of Arena Rock [EPISODE 169]

Rêverie: The Transcendence of Arena Rock [EPISODE 169]

The classic rock-inspired outfit Rêverie recently took some time to chat with us from a recording studio in Boston. The band consists of Alec Demello (vocals), Liv Barcohana (bass), Gilliam Robles (piano/vocals), Victor Echaniz (drums), Christian Mangiameli (guitar), and Michael Forry (guitar) who met through, and are all currently attending Berklee College of Music.

Christian and Victor spoke about the spectrum of influences driving the creation of their arena-rock sound with many compliments being paid to Alec who has the innate ability to channel the energy and wide-reaching registers of the likes of David Lee Roth in his heyday. Also paying homage to the incredible talent of their other bandmates during our conversation, the entire group seems equally dedicated to making Rêverie a success. Their exploration and progressive take on the classic rock genre - along with each member's stellar musicianship -sets this band apart from the others.

Rêverie has just released a beautifully intense and melodic masterpiece titled “Digging My Own Grave” that fully demonstrates the group’s versatility and advanced musical chops. Tune in to dive into the world of Rêverie and learn more about this band on the rise!

Emerson Woolf ~ A New Voice in our Old Town [EPISODE 167]

Emerson Woolf ~ A New Voice in our Old Town [EPISODE 167]

Emerson Woolf, with her band The Wishbones, is a new and wonderfully engaging voice here in Asbury Park.  Here, we had a chance to talk with Emerson about their music, their band, and just about everything you might need to know before you go out to see this fine performer.

Emerson Woolf and The Wishbones feature Woolf's vocal and writing talents.  Their voice is both silky-smooth and imbued with the grit of the life experiences of a much older singer-songwriter.  They are honest, direct, strong, and sensitive while being open to understanding others' life experiences.

This is a do-not-miss performer who is establishing themselves as a force in the Asbury Park area.

Also - thanks to River Street Sweets, who provided an entire bowl of tasty candies and treats for our performers and guests.

THE SECRET SAUCE IN SNACKTIME [EPISODE 166]

The “funkalishous” Philadelphia band – SNACKTIME – took time from their busy tour schedule supporting Portugal. The Man to talk with us recently and the hour we spent chatting felt like only 10 minutes. During this very enjoyable conversation, Yesseh Furaha-Ali (vocals, alto sax, percussion) and Sam Gellerstein (sousaphone) shared backstories aplenty about the band’s history, their deep reservoir of musical influences, how they built up their following and what it felt like performing on the Sand Stage at Sea.Hear.Now last year.

Not satisfied with being defined by music alone, SNACKTIME is a heavy hitter with giving back to the community, supporting those in need and modeling a lifestyle based on spreading love and positivity. Tune in today to become hooked on a sound so unique, that it’s impossible to compare this band to any other. And as great as their music is ... we promise that their live show will knock your socks off and shake you to the core. Make sure you catch them opening for Portugal. JOE SAMBA ~ GRACE & GRATITUDE IN SUCCESS [EPISODE 162]

JOE SAMBA ~ GRACE & GRATITUDE IN SUCCESS [EPISODE 162]

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Joe Samba just might be one of the nicest guys we’ve ever had the pleasure of “podcasting” with! Smack dab in the middle of his first headlining tour across the U.S., Joe carved some time out of his busy schedule to talk about his music which is an addicting combination of reggae, rock, pop, and soulful punk! So many things are taking off for this blossoming artist. In addition to headlining, he has just released a brand-new video for his song “Losing It” with The Elovaters … friends who he’s played with on many occasions in the past.

With his roots deeply planted in New Hampshire, Joe credits time spent in Key West as formative to building his presence and refining his sound; however much of his conversation was centered on his love for his family. What comes through clearly when you talk with him is his gratitude, love, and joy for his wife, baby, touring crew, and current musical situation. None of this is lost on him which is why he puts every ounce of energy and passion into every performance.

You’ll definitely want to tune in to our chat to be introduced to Joe Samba and his music. Once you do, you’ll find yourself adding song after song to your playlists because they are just THAT GOOD!!!

THE DT'S ~ AN UNDENIABLE SYNERGY [EPISODE 161]

THE DT'S ~ AN UNDENIABLE SYNERGY [EPISODE 161]

I recently had the opportunity to have a great conversation with David Cacciatore and Tom Losito of The DT’s. The power-pop/rock & bluesy duo has played together for some time but established themselves officially as The DT’s in early 2022.

Fresh off the release of their latest single “All In My Head,” it’s apparent that there’s a synergy and kismet to the fact that these two musicians were destined to make music together. Take away the fact that they could easily pass as close brothers who finish each other’s sentences, have a similar sense of humor, and blend their vocal harmonies seamlessly. But they both play several instruments, are equals in the songwriting process, and take their variety of musical influences to create a sound that is altogether there’s … and there’s alone.

THE DT's took some time to play an acoustic version of “All In My Head” that will stop you in your tracks and force you to tap to the beat and sing along to the catchy chorus! Tune in today to learn more about these talented musicians who are quietly – but very assuredly – making their way to bigger stages and audiences!

THE SELVES AND PLENTY OF THEM [EPISODE 160]

THE SELVES AND PLENTY OF THEM [EPISODE 160]

If you lived in North Jersey in the late 1980s, you would have come across the band The Selves.  The band, started by Mike Reilly on vocals and guitar,  eventually grew with Paul Fisher - on guitar, Steve Raimo - on drums, and Mike Santoro - on bass, with John Raso as their manager.

Hoboken, New Brunswick, Haledon, New York, and a few trips across the country - they played hundreds of shows over almost ten years.

Here, The Selves are together for the first time in six years and the first time putting their band's history in one long line.

Please note - this podcast is a long one, but it's one from the heart. - Doug

What a treat it was to talk it up with fellow podcaster– Matt Cullen – of the Jersey Shore Musician’s Podcast!! Matt started his podcast during the pandemic with his friend Jeff Kalemba as a way to help shed more light on the local music scene. Both musicians in their own right, Matt & Jeff’s goal is to use their platform and provide local talent with more exposure since there aren’t many opportunities in Ocean County. The guys conduct stellar  interviews with bands, host acoustic performances, and have even made music videos! MIKE MONTREY [EPISODE 158]

    MIKE MONTREY [EPISODE 158]

We recently had the opportunity to chat with NJ singer/songwriter/band leader Mike Montrey of the Mike Montrey Band.  Although he was remote from his studio, his wall art made us feel right at home. We talked about the futile attempts to define the “Americana" genre and what that style and association with it means to him.  We took a deep dive into his 2022 album - Searching For My Soul - and explored how his raw, honest lyrics connect with listeners. His rich storytelling opens up his world and invites others in to share his experiences in a deep and personal way.

Beyond that, we discussed his influences, where he came from, and how he wants his career to progress. Mike's connection to and admiration of Jeff Tweedy and WILCO have had a significant impact on him, and continue to inspire him to get his music in front of new audiences.  Tune in to this latest podcast and enter the fascinating world of Mike Montrey!

LISA BOUCHELLE'S RECIPE FOR LASTING SUCCESS [EPISODE 156]

Lisa Bouchelle knew she was destined to be a rock star from the day she was four years old and singing for family and friends atop a picnic table! Since that moment, she has worked laboriously, methodically, and relentlessly on achieving her goals. Basically, Lisa’s mantra is “Failure is NOT an option!”

With gorgeous vocals, meticulous guitar techniques, and catchy, memorable songwriting … Lisa Bouchelle (and her band The Bleu) have reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Magazine’s A/C Chart with the single “Love Is For The Making.” It’s her second single from the album Jump In that has charted and Lisa is only getting started.

We spoke with Lisa for our latest podcast and the hour flew by. She spoke of her experiences singing backup for Bruce Springsteen, dueting in concert with Jon Bon Jovi, playing with Bobby Bandierra, writing music with John Eddie and having Southside Johnny and Gary US Bonds record with her! Lisa also has a super cool TV show called “Rock Star Kitchen” where she interviews musicians as they cook favorite recipes together and then will even play some of their songs acoustically!

This podcast is a must listen for any Indie artist wondering if lasting success can really happen for them. Lisa Bouchelle is living proof that pursuing your talents with passion, positivity, and perseverance can ultimately lead to lasting success!

    FREE THE WITNESS [EPISODE 155]

    FREE THE WITNESS [EPISODE 155]

On December 9, 2023 … the New Jersey punk rock band Free The Witness will unveil their latest studio release, Youth of Tomorrow produced and mixed by Pete Steinkopf of punk rock veterans The Bouncing Souls, and mastered by Doug Gallo. Already streaming on all platforms is the EP’s white-hot lead single, also titled “Youth of Tomorrow.” Potent, high-level energy explodes from the outset and continues through with powerful vocals, heavy hitting drums and insanely technical guitar work.

Vocalist/guitarist Jake Bédel-Franklin and Bassist Kyle Crowley stopped by the APV Studio to chat about the band’s new direction with Youth of Tomorrow and how they’re maturing and gelling as a group. They spoke about their deliberate choices when crafting the new EP to show progressive growth in their music and insightful commentary through their lyrics. We also touched upon a lot of stories about their beginning years in the music industry.

Free The Witness has played the Punk in Drublic festival alongside NOFX and Face to Face. They’ve opened for Rise Against, The Descendents, Flogging Molly, Sum 41 and The Interrupters; and have headlined The Stone Pony. Last week the opened for Teenage Bottlerocket at House Of Independents. Listen to our latest podcast with Free The Witness all the way to the end to hear special bonus content!

    SEAN TOBIN [EPISODE 154]

    SEAN TOBIN [EPISODE 154]

One of our absolute favorite artists - Sean Tobin - stopped by our studio recently to talk about his newly released single “Song for the End of the World” as well as his album, Hands Like Mine, set to be released on November 10th. Hands Like Mine was written and produced by Tobin, and made alongside longtime band members David Patiño, Jack Breslin, and Jake Garbe, as well as guitarist Evan Dibbs.

During our podcast Sean spoke all about his supporting band – The Boardwalk Fire – and the process they go through when creating their music. Although each band member has made their way to different parts of the globe, the group came together to produce this labor of love. It’s a bittersweet moment in Sean’s career. The album promises to be his most prolific and sonically progressive work yet; however, he has decided to make the trek to Nashville and plans to perform extensively throughout the fall and winter as a solo act.

Sean graciously performed acoustically for us, giving us a premiere performance of the soon-to-be-released single “Hail The Carpenter.” His lyrical storytelling coupled with the mesmerizing melody and his smoky vocals make this an exquisite tune that deserves to be on every music lover’s playlist! Tune in today and become immersed in Sean's story and his beautiful music!

    Side Notes:

*Sean can't get rid of APV that easily! He promises to join our podcast periodically in the future with his "Updates from Nashville" which we'll share with everyone!

**And thank you to Diane's daughter - Julie DiMemmo - for joining us to say hello at the beginning of the podcast!

SurviFern with Matt Fernicola [EPISODE 153]

SurviFern with Matt Fernicola [EPISODE 153]

When not fronting the rock ensemble “The Foes of Fern,” you would think that Matt Fernicola (a massively talented fellow) would relax a little.  But you’d be wrong.  Instead, he and his cohort (merry band of tricksters if you ask us) have been planning what they call SurviFern

This well may be the first live-action reality show associated with Asbury Park – A sort-of Survivor meets Jackass?  Hard to explain.

But… 16 players will face off and form alliances in their individual and collective efforts to get past the tribal councils and win the grand prize.

Yes – it is hard to explain – but over the three days of Labor Day weekend 2023, Fern’s parent’s yard will be transformed into a battlefield of wits and brawn, skill and luck, with a lot of music.

    ABOVE THE MOON [EPISODE 152]

    ABOVE THE MOON [EPISODE 152]

I had the pleasure of speaking with the NJ alt-rock band – Above The Moon – recently! It happened to be on the night Asbury Park had a torrential rainstorm that closed roads and wreaked havoc on all drivers at that time! Despite that challenge, vocalist Kate and bassist Kyle (who happen to be brother and sister) made it to the studio; and we were able to remotely connect with guitarist Shawn and drummer John to chat about their new album Mine Again!

Mine Again is the band’s first full-length album following several EPs and singles within their discography. Recorded in a home studio and engineered and produced by Shawn, the masterpiece demonstrates a progressive level of maturity and evolution from this extremely talented group who has been together for seven years. Their style incorporates rock, shoegaze, pop, and Indie singer/songwriter elements that set them apart in a very distinct way.

Our conversation touched upon their experiences in the studio while recording, the growing synergy within the group, and all the influences that play a part in their musical creation. Tune in today to learn more about Above The Moon and follow them on socials to see where you can catch their future shows in the area.

    BOBBY SYVARTH BAND [EPISODE 151]

    BOBBY SYVARTH BAND [EPISODE 151]

The Bobby Syvarth Band (Bobby Syvarth, Geoff Doubleday, Paul Kuzik) stopped by to remind us exactly what three talented musicians can do.  I first saw them opening for another band, but these three were the very reason you need to get to shows early to see the opener!

The acoustic harmonies will give you chills and their humble good nature will want you to have these three over for a backyard jam.

This is a group not to miss! (Would we lie to you?)
