Ep. 27 - Oscar Recap & Weird Science Encore

Welp, Oscar season 2024 came and went and no teen movie won the little gold man but that’s ok because we’ve got another episode of Save the Last Pod for ya!

In this episode Amy and Dan recap their Oscar celebrations, look back on the 2023 film scene and reaffirm that there is still love for movies. And maybe next year a raunchy teen movie will take top prize?

This week we dig deep into the vault to bring you an encore episode of WEIRD SCIENCE, the John Hughes movie that most definitely did not earn him an Oscar nomination but was apart of a mega year for his career.

Does this podcast deserve an Oscar? If so, rate us 5 Stars! Just like last week and the week before, if you leave us a comment nominating your favorite teen movie or teen idols for an Oscar, we will read it on the air.

    Ep 26 - Lady Bird

    Ep 26 - Lady Bird

It’s Oscar Week in Hollywood, dweebs! This week, we honor the Little Gold Man by bringing you to Sacramento circa 2002! That’s right, early aughts are now considered a “period piece,” babe. Released in 2017, it’s the even bigger snub (IMO) from auteur writer/director Greta Gerwig, we’re talking LADY BIRD!

In this episode, Amy presses Dan on why he dubbed himself with the name “Fresh,” and our first listener review! Shout-out to KevDogggy, with three G’s. Your favorite Dave Matthews fans also discuss the Chicago River incident, what it was like to grow up in the shadow of 9/11, and that weird feeling of “home” when you must leave yours to feel whole. Yes, we get a little emotional! But don’t worry we still nerd out over Tim-o-tee and laugh at this film’s exquisite, should’ve-won-an-Oscar dialogue.

The Golden Basement by David Norman Lewis - Episode 175

The Golden Basement by David Norman Lewis - Episode 175

This time we read The Golden Basement by David Norman Lewis, self-published in March of 2023. This was recommended by long-time listener, first-time caller Max who sent us a wonderful email recommending that we read this saying, "A few months ago you might have noticed a poem titled "$Reward$If$Found$" stapled up all over Cambridge, there were a couple reddit threads about it. On going back to my hometown of Seattle, WA I found out the poem is from a local self-published book...The author has been stapling the same poem everywhere. The novel is a "kids' book" about underground monsters controlling people's thoughts during the 1990 Goodwill Games...There's a YouTube video where the author is trying to sell it with donuts. You have to check it out. I so want to hear your takes on it…I emailed the author and he told me the baker is a friend of his. They once worked together on trying to make a new religion for Seattle but nobody showed up."

Thank you so very much, Max, for your longtime support and for recommending this book. It was very different from anything we've read before and we actually didn't hate it!

Today’s show includes our usual barnyard language plus discussion or mention of: emotional abuse, enslavement, murder, parental neglect and abuse, sexual assault, and suicide.

PREVIEW New Millennium Men (w/ Alex Kazemi)

PREVIEW New Millennium Men (w/ Alex Kazemi)

Writer Alex Kazemi wrote his first novel, Your Truly, Brad Sela, back in 2013 when he was only 19-years-old. In a true time capsule of the 2010s, Alex published an excerpt of that manuscript on his Tumblr page, and it exploded. He got 132,000 views and signed a book deal with MTV Books. For whatever reason or another, the book didn't come out when it was planned for. Instead, Alex embarked on several interesting projects in the media: contributing to magazines such as The Observer, Dazed and Autre, working as managing editor at Prim Magazine, releasing a series of video ads for Marilyn Manson, and founding the Advisor which collected letters contemporary male icons to young men, with contributions from heroes like Richard Kern, Bruce LaBruce, and Moby.

The initial novel, however, NEVER DIED. And it now LIVES. Alex's debut novel is
New Millennium Boyz and it is published by none other than Permuted Press, a sub-division of Simon & Schuster. It is a fast, frenetic and hilarious read, and finds its protagonist Brad Sela as a senior in high school. Brad is a popular good looking kid who feels alienated and bored by his stereotypical and normie friends. His life forever changes when he strikes a friendship up with the Hot Topic'd, gothified new kids Lu and Shane and embarks on a journey of self-discovery and self-destruction.

Adam immediately identified with the novel because it takes place in the year, 1999, when he came into his full pop cultural awareness: Manson, Eminem, Columbine, Y2K fear, Corgan, consumerism aglore! Here, Adam and Alex discuss their peculiar shared work histories, millennials, masculinity, '90s pop culture, Gen X, Gen Z, sociopathy,
New Millennium Boyz and much more...

    07. Rich Girls with Hannah Becker

    07. Rich Girls with Hannah Becker

Is it a coincidence that in the fall/winter of 2003 two shows aired about pairs of wealthy heiress best friends? In our first episode of the two part series on Eat The Rich television, Helen and guest Hannah Becker discuss MTV's Rich Girls, a reality television show starring Ally Hilfiger (daughter of designer Tommy Hilfiger) and Jamie Gleicher (daughter of a different rich guy). The show is perhaps best remembered today for its depiction of the New York City blackout in August '03 — much less impressive upon rewatch sadly — but it's a time capsule show about friendships, early reality programming, and caprese salad. Unlike The Simple Life, which starred fellow heiresses Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, Rich Girls didn't have a format, but what it lacked in structure it made up for in heart.
