372. OCR Adaptive Athletes with Andy Reid!

Something that we have had on our potential future episode list for a long time is an episode on adaptive athletes in the sport of OCR. Once I started looking, it seemed like Andy Reid was the man to have on the show to talk about it. He is the founder of OCR Adaptive Athletes and has created a community on facebook to suport each other and to reach out to various countries around to world to try and get their events to be more inclusive!

We discuss what it means to be a pioneer in helping pave a better future in this sport, the difference between the term adaptive and para-athlete, visable and invisable barriers for athletes, changes that he would like to see race directors make, and much more!

368. Cassandra Gill on Dealing with Failure, Ice Cream, Podium Success in 2023 and More!

After reading her name at least a dozen times when reviewing podiums during quick news last year, we finally had Cassandra Gill on the show!

She is fairly new to the sport but has found some pretty great success in the sport lately which led to her making the top 5 of Jack Bauer's post highlighting the leaderboard of elite Spartan Race podiums across 2023. She is also both an animal, and a serious ice cream lover so she is one of our people!

We discuss her athletic background, how she found obstacle course racing, support from fellow athletes, getting through some failures, some of her favorite race memories in 2023, big plans for 2024 and more!

367. Garfield Griffiths on Cigars, Bacon, and His History of Race Directing!

We are very proud of the number of guests that we have had on the show over the years. A big name in the sport of obstacle course racing that we hadn't gotten around to yet was Garfield Griffiths though!

With the news of him no longer being a race director over at Spartan Race, effectively ending his 12 year old career of race directing for brands such as Battlefrog, Savage Race, OCRWC, and Spartan itself, we figured that it would be a good time to reach out and have him on!

We talk about the changes that he has seen in the sport over the years, lessons learned in race directing, favorite race venues, his love for cigars and bacon, and how his position in the company has changed.

We also discuss fun facts like him being the creator of Savage Race's "Wheel World" obstacle and what he wanted to call it, his history of spinning recorrds at the first ever Ultra EDM show, and how he started a Facebook group for dad jokes that now has 45 thousand members.

We wanted a foreign athlete on the show but were worried about potential language barriers. When we saw that Nikolaj Dam took third place in the beast, was on the Danish team with Ida and Leon who took third, and participated in the 3K we were excited to reach out to him!

This week we going hybrid and are giving some love to the Deka World Championships in Texas that happened last weekend!

While hybrid racing isn't a focus for this show or a big passion for us personally, we wanted to switch gears for a bit and hear more about this big long weekend event.

Kevin Gregory not only won the Deka Strong but also won 4 different team events with one of them creating a new world record! He has an extensive history in obstacle course racing but has really found his niche in hybrid racing as you can hear about the first time we had him on for his own episode!

Back in Palmerton we were able to meet Manuel Dufaux and interview him between waves at the 3K series race. Now that he won the Spartan North American series we were more than excited to have him on for his own episode!

We talk about his motivation to take on the Spartan 3K series, what stood out most for each event in the series, how he felt about winning the series overall, his experience at OCRWC, the importance of recovery as an older athlete, and the sacrifices and focus needed to do well!
