    When to Quit

    enOctober 10, 2022
What does Annie Duke say about quitting?
How can rigid goals affect decision-making?
What are 'kill criteria' according to Duke?
Why is it beneficial to have a quitting coach?
How can cognitive bias affect the quitting decision?

    Podcast Summary

    • Embracing the Art of Quitting: A Wise Strategy for SuccessQuitting is not always a sign of weakness; it is a strategic decision that requires assessing the positive expected value and setting "kill criteria" to determine when it is appropriate to walk away.

Quitting is not always a bad thing, but rather a valuable skill to learn and master. Annie Duke, a former professional poker player, emphasizes that quitting and perseverance are two sides of the same coin. While we often celebrate grit and perseverance, we fail to recognize the benefits of knowing when to walk away. The decision to quit or stick with something depends on its positive expected value, and setting rigid goals can hinder our ability to assess this value. Furthermore, cognitive biases can prevent us from quitting when it is necessary. Duke suggests establishing "kill criteria" to determine when it is appropriate to quit. Ultimately, we should not view quitting as a weakness, but rather as a wise and strategic choice.

    • Rethinking Quitting: A Strategic Decision in Pursuing GoalsQuitting is often necessary to focus on one's true passions and goals, and should be seen as a strategic decision rather than a sign of failure.

Quitting is often the wisest choice and a skill we need to develop. Annie Duke emphasizes the importance of context and how quitting is the other side of the coin of grit. Brett McKay shares his personal experience of quitting other sports to focus on football, highlighting how perseverance in one area often requires quitting in others. They discuss how society tends to avoid using the word "quitting" and instead uses euphemisms like "shifting focus" or "pivoting." They also mention how even highly successful individuals like Lindsey Vonn and Serena Williams frame their retirements as not quitting. This conversation highlights the need to rethink our perception of quitting and acknowledge that it can be a strategic decision in pursuing our goals.

    • The Power of Quitting: Navigating Uncertainty and Making Informed ChoicesQuitting is not about giving up, but about making informed choices and focusing on activities that align with our goals, leading to growth and success.

Quitting is a valuable skill that allows us to navigate uncertainty and make better decisions. In a world where we lack complete knowledge and cannot predict the future, quitting helps us adapt and free up resources for things that truly matter. It enables us to explore different options and find our true passions, while eliminating pursuits that do not align with our goals. Quitting is not about giving up, but about making informed choices and focusing our time and attention on activities that have the potential for growth and success. By embracing the power of quitting, we can better prioritize our efforts and increase our chances of achieving meaningful outcomes.

    • The Power of Strategic QuittingQuitting unproductive endeavors can actually accelerate progress towards your goals, allowing you to redirect your efforts towards more beneficial opportunities. Winners understand that quitting can be a strategic move towards success.

Quitting doesn't always halt progress, but can actually accelerate it. Annie Duke emphasizes that quitting something that isn't getting you closer to your goals allows you to redirect your efforts towards something more beneficial. It's essential to understand that quitting can speed up your journey and help you reach your destination faster. This concept aligns with the notion that winners often quit because they constantly seek the best path available to them. Additionally, the conversation introduces the concept of expected value, which involves comparing the long-term benefits to the costs. Expected value extends beyond financial aspects and applies to achieving personal goals, such as happiness or health, weighing the gains against the sacrifices made along the way.

    • Assessing value and adapting to changeConsider the long-term value of decisions and be adaptable to changing circumstances. Reflect on personal goals and consider potential costs and limitations along the chosen path.

When making decisions, whether it's about starting something or sticking with it, we need to consider the concept of expected value. We make educated guesses about whether the outcome will be positive in the long run. However, it's important to remember that circumstances can change, both in the world around us and in ourselves. Assessing the expected value requires paying attention to these changes and constantly evaluating if the path we're on still holds value. Self-reflection and knowing what we truly want are vital in this process. Additionally, while goals can be motivating, there is a downside to fixating on them. It's essential to consider the costs and potential future limitations that continuing on a certain path may entail.

    • Stuck in the Pursuit: The Pitfalls of Continued Goal PursuitIt's essential to reevaluate our goals regularly and have the courage to let go of ones that no longer serve us, even if it means accepting failure.

Our goals can trap us into continuing even when they are no longer worthwhile. Goals are often graded on a pass or fail basis, leading us to feel like failures even if we've accomplished a lot. We tend to measure our progress based on the distance between where we are and our destination, rather than how far we've come from the starting point. This cognitive phenomenon keeps us focused on the finish line and makes it difficult for us to stop short, even if it is the rational and healthy choice. We will go to great lengths to avoid closing mental accounts as failures, even if it means enduring pain, toxicity, or unhappiness. It's important to recognize when a goal is no longer worth pursuing and have the courage to let go.

    • The Importance of Flexible GoalsCreating flexibility in our goals is crucial for our ability to react, adapt, and adjust our path when necessary in a changing world.

Goals can often become fixed objects in a changing world. When we set goals, we analyze the costs and benefits and make a decision based on expected value. However, once we start working towards the goal, it can become rigid and inflexible, despite changes in ourselves or the world around us. Annie Duke explains that this fixed nature of goals can hinder our ability to react and adapt to unforeseen circumstances. We may fail to recognize negative signals or even double down on our efforts instead of quitting when necessary. Therefore, it is crucial to create flexibility in our goals, allowing us to react more rationally and adjust our path when needed.

    • The Consequences of Inflexibility in BusinessBusiness owners must be adaptable and willing to make tough decisions when faced with market challenges, as refusing to do so can lead to failure and bankruptcy.

It is important for business owners to adapt and make strategic decisions based on market conditions. Harold Staw, the CEO of ABC Stores, faced challenges when Kmart started to expand and impinge on his business. Despite clear evidence that his California stores were losing money, Harold refused to sell them and stubbornly clung to his opinion. This resistance led to his eventual separation from the company and the bankruptcy of all the stores. The story emphasizes the importance of being flexible and willing to make tough decisions when necessary, even if it means letting go of personal attachments. It also highlights the dangers of doubling down on a failing venture and the need to consider market competition and trends.

    • The Endowment Effect and its Impact on Decision MakingOur emotional attachment to what we own can lead to irrational decisions and prevent us from embracing better opportunities. It is important to assess the value of future investments rather than being guided by past investments.

Our attachment to what we own can cloud our judgment and prevent us from making rational decisions. This is known as the endowment effect, where we place a higher value on things we already own, even if they are not valuable to others. In the case of Harold Staw, his stubbornness to sell off failing California stores was driven by his emotional attachment to what he had built. This attachment caused him to escalate his commitment and miss out on better opportunities. Additionally, we tend to view quitting or letting go as a waste of our past investments. However, waste should be seen as a forward-looking problem. We should consider whether it makes sense to put more time, effort, or money into something, rather than being guided by sunk costs.

    • Understanding the influence of sunk costs and identity on decision-makingOvercoming cognitive biases and decision-making flaws requires recognizing and addressing the impact of sunk costs and our identity, rather than simply relying on awareness of these biases.

Our decisions are heavily influenced by our sunk costs and our identity. We tend to focus on what we have already invested in something, rather than objectively considering whether it makes sense to continue. This is because our identity becomes entangled with our decisions, especially when they go against consensus. Changing our beliefs or quitting becomes difficult because it feels like we are abandoning a part of ourselves. Simply knowing about cognitive biases and decision-making flaws is not enough to overcome them. We cannot just trick ourselves into thinking that we are starting fresh when making a decision. We need to acknowledge and address the influences of sunk costs and identity to make better choices.

    • Improving Decision-Making through Signal Awareness and External Perspectives.Identify signals to walk away from a decision, commit to predetermined actions, and seek advice from an unbiased source to make better choices and avoid pitfalls.

Making decisions in the heat of the moment often leads to poorer outcomes. To mitigate this, there are two helpful strategies. Firstly, it is important to identify and pre-commit to certain signals that indicate it's time to walk away from a decision. Think in advance about what those signals might be, write them down, and commit to a predetermined action. This helps to avoid being swayed by intuition in the midst of the decision. Secondly, seeking the perspective of an unbiased "quitting coach" can provide valuable insight. Someone outside of the situation can often see things more clearly and objectively. By involving a trusted advisor or confidant, one can make better choices and avoid unnecessary pitfalls. So, remember to plan ahead and seek outside perspectives to enhance decision-making.

    • Setting Clear "Kill Criteria" for Effective Decision-Making and ProgressEstablishing specific benchmarks and deadlines helps individuals determine when to quit and pursue other opportunities, preventing wasted time and effort and facilitating meaningful progress.

Setting clear "kill criteria" is essential for making decisions and avoiding the illusion of progress. By establishing a specific benchmark and deadline for achieving a goal, individuals can determine when it's time to quit and pursue a different path. This prevents the continuous feeling of progress without actual results. For example, someone aspiring for a tenure track position after obtaining a PhD can set a date and determine that if they haven't secured a position by then, they will pursue other opportunities. Without this predetermined criteria, individuals may fall into the trap of constantly thinking they are about to achieve their goal, leading to wasted time and effort. By tethering oneself to reality and focusing on worthwhile pursuits, meaningful progress can be made.

    • Enhancing decision-making through outside perspectives.Seeking external support and teaching decision-making skills early on can help individuals overcome biases, make informed choices, and navigate the complex world with confidence.

Seeking outside perspectives can enhance decision-making. By involving a third party who is not emotionally invested in our choices, we can overcome biases like the endowment effect that may cloud our judgment. Annie Duke expresses her gratitude to Brett McKay for giving her a platform to share her expertise, highlighting the impact of external support on the success of her book. She also emphasizes the importance of teaching decision-making skills to children through the Alliance for Decision Education. This underlines the need to prioritize critical thinking and understanding how to process information, make informed choices, and develop positive habits. Teaching decision-making skills from a young age can empower individuals to navigate the complex world with confidence.

    You Were Born to Run

    You Were Born to Run

For decades, some researchers have argued that the notable human capacity for endurance evolved from the hunting practices of our ancestors, which produced physiological adaptations that make us uniquely well suited for running.

But this theory has always had its detractors.

As my guest explains, a new study addresses these long-standing criticisms and adds evidence that, indeed, we were all born to run.

Alex Hutchinson is a journalist who covers the science of endurance and fitness, and today on the show, he explains what those criticisms were and how this new research counters them. We talk about the role running held amongst peoples of the past, how running is not only primal but cultural and even spiritual, and why we continue to run today, even though we’re not hunting for food. And we discuss how, even if we are born to run, that doesn’t mean everyone will always enjoy running all of the time, and how to get into running if you’re someone who doesn’t feel an innate desire for it.

    Becoming a Tech Intentional Family

    Becoming a Tech Intentional Family

In a family, a lot of the dynamics around devices and screens are reactive in nature. Kids bug for their own smartphones, parents worry they'll be left out without one, and without weighing the pros and cons, give in to their kids' requests. Parents let children have a ton of screen time because it lets the parents do what they want; then, they reach a moment where they feel disturbed about how much time their kids are on screens, berate their children for this habit, which they've facilitated, and vow that things are going to abruptly turn around.

Rather than basing your policies about kids and screens on mood, fear, and impulse, it would be better to do so based on reason and reflection. Emily Cherkin has some ideas on how to get there. Emily is a former teacher, a screentime consultant who helps parents and educators balance the role of devices in kids' lives, and the author of The Screentime Solution: A Judgment-Free Guide to Becoming a Tech-Intentional Family. Today on the show, Emily unpacks the state of screentime amongst kids today, how the "displacement hypothesis" explains how its impact extends beyond a decline in mental health, and why parents give their kids smartphones even when they're not sure it's good for them. We then turn to how families can become more tech intentional, and how that starts with parents taking a look at their own behavior. We discuss why putting parental controls on devices isn't the ultimate solution, why a better one is based on your relationship with your kids, why you need to live your digital life out loud, and some considerations to think through before getting your kid their first smartphone.

How to Win Friends and Influence People in the 21st Century

How to Win Friends and Influence People in the 21st Century

    Note: This is a rebroadcast.

Over the last year, my 12-year-old son has been doing one challenge every week as a rite of passage and chance to earn a special trip. Some of these challenges have involved reading a book in a week, and the most recent book we gave him to read was How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie. His review? He said it was the best book he's read so far.

So a book written almost 90 years ago can still be a favorite of a kid in the 21st century. Talk about some staying power.

The advice in How to Win Friends & Influence People, and Dale Carnegie's other classic, How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, is timeless. But to help introduce it to a new audience, my guest, Joe Hart, has recently co-authored the book Take Command, which synthesizes, updates, and adds to the principles of Carnegie's two perennial bestsellers. Joe is the President and CEO of Dale Carnegie & Associates, which continues Carnegie's work in the present day, and we begin our conversation with some background on the guy who kicked off this work back in 1936. We then talk about what principles we can take from How to Stop Worrying and Start Living on developing a positive mindset. From there, we talk about the big overarching principle of How to Win Friends & Influence People, and how you can use it to improve your relationships. We end our conversation with advice on how to live life with more intentionality and meaning.

It's Never Too Late to Achieve Your Dream, Receive Recognition, or Make Your Mark

It's Never Too Late to Achieve Your Dream, Receive Recognition, or Make Your Mark

As you get older, you can start to feel like you'll never achieve your dream or receive recognition for your contributions to a field, or that your best work is behind you.

Mo Rocca has compiled stories that demonstrate that you shouldn't give up hope, and that no matter your age, the best may yet be to come.

Mo is a humorist, journalist, and the co-author of Roctogenarians: Late in Life Debuts, Comebacks, and Triumphs. Today on the show, Mo shares the stories and lessons of entrepreneurs, artists, actors, and more who achieved greatness or adulation in their twilight years or had a new spurt of creativity when they thought the well had run dry, including KFC founder Colonel Sanders, the artist Matisse, a couple of guys who didn't receive their first war wounds until they were old enough to qualify for the senior citizen discount at Denny's, and even a virile 90-year-old tortoise.

    When He's Married to Mom

    When He's Married to Mom

Your relationship with your mother is likely the first and most foundational connection in your life. At its best, this bond can be a source of comfort, strength, and love that lasts a lifetime and changes in healthy, appropriate, and adaptive ways as you mature into adulthood.

But sometimes, the attachment between a mother and her son can become unhealthy, resulting in a phenomenon called mother-son enmeshment, in which a man can become a kind of surrogate husband to his mom.

Here to unpack this complex issue is Dr. Kenneth Adams. Ken is a clinical psychologist who has spent much of his career working with what he calls "mother-enmeshed men" and is the author of When He's Married to Mom. Today on the show, Ken unpacks the characteristics of mother-enmeshed men and how to know if you are one, and he explains what can happen in childhood that would cause a mother to enmesh with her son. We discuss the problems enmeshment can create in men's relationships and other areas of life and how it can lead to things like compulsive porn use. And we unpack what it means for a man to become independent and emancipate from his mother, how it's different from cutting her off, and what it looks like to have a healthy relationship with your mom.

Unlock Better Sleep and Health by Harnessing Your Circadian Rhythm

Unlock Better Sleep and Health by Harnessing Your Circadian Rhythm

You probably know your body follows a circadian rhythm, and probably think of it as primarily regulating your sleep/wake cycle, which it certainly does. But your body's internal clock also regulates many other physical, mental, and behavioral changes that occur every 24 hours, and working with your circadian rhythm, rather than against it, can boost your health and happiness.

Here to unpack how to do so is Russell Foster, a professor of circadian neuroscience and the author of Life Time: Your Body Clock and Its Essential Roles in Good Health and Sleep. In the first part of our conversation, we discuss some science and background on circadian rhythm and its connection to light exposure. We then turn to the practical implications of having an internal clock, including whether you need to worry about viewing blue light at night, the significant mental and physical harms that can accrue from working the night shift and what can be done to mitigate them, what influences your chronotype and whether you're a morning lark or a night owl, whether you should be concerned if you're waking up in the middle of the night, why you wake up to pee in the night, the best times of day to exercise, and how the circadian rhythm can influence when you should take medication.

Practicing Spiritual Disciplines as an Act of Resistance

Practicing Spiritual Disciplines as an Act of Resistance

To train the body, strengthening its muscles, increasing its cardiovascular health, and improving its agility, you need to do exercises like stretching, running, and lifting weights.

To train the soul, expanding its capacity, you likewise need to perform exercises, in this case, what are called "spiritual disciplines" — practices like fasting, silence, self-examination, study, and simplicity.

As a pastor, John Mark Comer approaches the spiritual disciplines from a Christian perspective, as the habits and practices from "the way of Jesus" that allow individuals to make deeper layers of themselves available to grace and access the transforming power that's necessary to become what John Mark calls "a person of love."

But the practices that are considered spiritual disciplines can be found across different religions, and even philosophies like Stoicism, and can be utilized by people from varied backgrounds to deepen their inner life and strength, center themselves in chaos, find greater purpose, and subdue baser desires to reach for higher ideals.

Today on the show, John Mark offers an introduction to the spiritual disciplines, and the way they can be an act of resistance, a way for us to form our own values and rhythms in life, instead of allowing our lives to be formed by the defaults and external forces of our age.

Join us at http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT Looking back over your life, you can see if you had done something differently, that would have changed the course of everything. Or would it? Some things happen for a reason due to the season and reactions. Some things happen because there is a time for everything.  (Ecclesiastes 3) But what is not spoken about is the relationship you and I have with our responses to living and how we go about making decisions with follow-through. Whether in your personal or professional life, you make decisions every day. However, what is missed most of the time, is your relationship with success versus failure. It's how you see yourself. And based on that opinion (your own thoughts and beliefs from your personal reflection), you decide which fork to take in the road. But how do you define success and failure? Is it more about getting it right or learning from the falls? What I believe is that if you flip the coin and focus, there you will find victory. The K.I.S.S. ~ Flip the C.O.I.N. and focus! Truly, it's just another way to look at and calculate your growth. It's not about right or wrong. But really the aspect of how you create your now to keep moving you towards the goal or the dream, all the while being realistic in who you are becoming and what you need to improve upon. Why is it that success has to happen before you move forward? But you see, how you define success really is what determines your next step.  So don't look at your life through the spectrum of success. Look with a keen eye of adventure and what you learn, good or bad or indifferent. All is a victory because you learned! So let's flip the C.O.I.N. and focus. Victory is yours to claim!

    - ORGANIZE where you are going. - If you are going to take a route, you need to know the different exits and streets along the way. So you have to be organized in the steps you take to get you where you're going. Or you will end up in a different area completely.
    - ILLUMINATE what's missing. - You can always work with what you have. However, if you want the victory, you have to learn too. So what is missing?
    - NON-NEGOTIABLES hold the boundaries. - What I mean by that, is you must decide the fine lines you will not cross. What your priorities are for the season you are in. The non-negotiables are what you do regardless of anything else that's happening.

Are you trying to juggle all the things: busy schedule, activities, commitments, work, and family. Over-extension keeps you entangled with chaos. Victory is found in focus.

Too many professionals keep their eye on the prize, SUCCESS! But what is really success? How do you find it? And is success really what you are searching for?

Looking back over your life, you can see if you had done something differently, that would have changed the course of everything.

    Or would it?

Some things happen for a reason due to the season and reactions. Some things happen because there is a time for everything.  (Ecclesiastes 3)

But what is not spoken about is the relationship you and I have with our responses to living and how we go about making decisions with follow-through.

    1. CHOOSE what you want. - What are you going after? What is your dream? What do you want to accomplish? You have to get clear and concise on what you want in the season you're in. This is the only way to know the direction you're headed or where you want to go. You can call it the beginning of your GPS search. Plug in the address and see what's next.
    2. ORGANIZE where you are going. - If you are going to take a route, you need to know the different exits and streets along the way. So you have to be organized in the steps you take to get you where you're going. Or you will end up in a different area completely.
    3. ILLUMINATE what's missing. - You can always work with what you have. However, if you want the victory, you have to learn too. So what is missing?
    4. NON-NEGOTIABLES hold the boundaries. - What I mean by that, is you must decide the fine lines you will not cross. What your priorities are for the season you are in. The non-negotiables are what you do regardless of anything else that's happening.

When you operate from the position of planning and prepping, your vision can expand and grow making room for the victory!
