The Raw Reality: Grieving The Loss Of A Loved One

    enSeptember 21, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Jesse's Inspiring Story Cut Short by CancerAppreciate life's moments and cherish loved ones, as life's unpredictability was tragically demonstrated by Jesse's passing despite her triumphs over struggles.

Life is unpredictable and fragile. Just weeks after sharing her inspiring story on the Ed Mylett Show, Jesse Lee Ward passed away from stage four cancer. She was a woman who had overcome financial struggles and found love and success, only to be taken too soon. Her loss serves as a reminder to cherish every moment and appreciate the people in our lives while we have the chance. Despite the sadness, Jesse's spirit and resilience continue to inspire us all. Her legacy will live on through the lives she touched and the lessons she shared. Let us honor her memory by living our best lives and continuing to fight for a cure for cancer.

    • Grief is a reminder of deep loveGrief is a natural response to loss, signifying deep love and connection. It's important to acknowledge and process this emotion, allowing ourselves to grieve while celebrating memories and love.

Grief is a natural response to loss, and it's a testament to the depth of the love we have for someone. The speaker shared a personal story about coaching a young woman who was diagnosed with a serious illness and continued their sessions from her hospital bed. Despite her passing, the speaker found comfort in their faith and the belief that she was in paradise, free from pain and worry. Grief, according to the speaker, is a reminder that love transcends death. It's a powerful emotion that signifies the deep connection we have with the people we care about. It's important to acknowledge and process this emotion, allowing ourselves to grieve while also celebrating the love and memories we shared with the person we've lost.

    • Finding meaning in difficult experiencesDifficult experiences don't define us, instead the meaning we take from them shapes us. They can provide opportunities for personal growth and appreciation for life.

The events in our lives, including the difficult and tragic ones, do not define us. Instead, it's the meaning we take from those events that shapes us. When we experience loss or suffering, it's natural to ask "why" and "what does it mean?" But what we can learn from these experiences is invaluable. We can gain a deeper appreciation for life, a renewed sense of purpose, and a motivation to grow and improve. The passing of a loved one, for instance, can serve as a reminder to live each day more fully and to honor the people in our lives who have left an impact on us. It's important to remember that these events are not in vain, and that we can use them as opportunities for personal growth and development.

    • Prioritize health, relationships, and personal well-beingRegular health checks, genetic testing, addressing strained relationships, focusing on personal life, and cherishing loved ones are essential for a fulfilling life.

We should prioritize our health, relationships, and personal well-being. The story of Jesse Lee, who passed away despite being in great shape, serves as a reminder to get regular health checks and genetic testing. Additionally, strained relationships should be addressed and reconciled before it's too late. The passing of Jesse Lee also taught her to mend her relationship with her mother, leading to a beautiful reconciliation. For some, like the speaker, the lesson may be to slow down, say no to opportunities, and focus on personal life and social connections. Ultimately, what truly matters is our loved ones and relationships, not just our accumulation of wealth or helping others.

    • People and relationships matter mostReflect on relationships, learn from experiences, and embrace emotions for a fulfilling life

People and relationships matter most in life. It's easy to get caught up in pursuing material things or career goals, but it's essential to remember that people are what truly matter. The speaker learned this lesson through the loss of a friend and the importance of expressing love and appreciation to those around us. Another important takeaway is that every experience, good or bad, holds unique lessons for us. It's essential to reflect on these lessons and ask ourselves what we can learn from them. Lastly, the speaker emphasized the power of tears and the importance of allowing ourselves to feel and express deep emotions, as they are a sign of strength and eloquence. Overall, the speaker encourages us to prioritize our relationships, reflect on the lessons life presents us, and give ourselves the gift of our own happiness.

    • We are spiritual beings, not our material possessions or emotionsFocus on living a meaningful life and leaving a positive impact on others, as we cannot take material or emotional things with us when we leave this world.

We are not our physical bodies, achievements, accumulations, problems, worries, fears, emotions, mistakes, or sins. Instead, we are spiritual beings or souls. Therefore, when we leave this world, we cannot take these material or emotional things with us. Instead, we leave behind a legacy in the form of the impact we have had on others. So, it's essential to focus on living a meaningful life and leaving a positive impact on those around us. The speaker's experiences with the passing of her father and friend reminded her of this important lesson.

    • Who we leave behind mattersConsider the relationships and impact we want to leave behind instead of focusing on material possessions or achievements.

We are the sum of the people we love and the memories we share with them. When we leave this world, we leave behind a part of ourselves in the form of love, belief, and memories. Therefore, it's essential to consider who we want to be in our final moments and what we want to leave behind for others. Focusing on material possessions or achievements may not matter in the end. Instead, cherishing relationships and leaving a positive impact on others should be our priority. Just as my dad left me with his memories, beliefs, and pride, we too can make a lasting impact on those around us. So, ask yourself, when your one more day comes, what do you want to leave behind?

    • Making every moment countFocus on leaving a positive legacy, becoming the best version of ourselves, honoring those who believed in us, and not being defined by past mistakes.

Life is fleeting and it's important to make the most of the time we have. Regardless of our age or beliefs, we all have a limited time on this earth. So, we should focus on leaving a positive legacy and becoming the best version of ourselves. We should honor those who have believed in us and made us feel special, whether they are still with us or not. We should not be defined by our past mistakes or failures, but rather use them as learning experiences to move forward. Time is running out, so let's make every moment count and prove those who believed in us right.

    • Living by faith and cherishing relationshipsFocus on faith, make amends, cherish relationships, live a life worthy of pride, and embrace tears as a testament to love.

No matter the circumstances, we should live by faith and not by sight, focusing on what truly matters in life. Our time on earth is limited, so it's essential to make amends with those we may have wronged and prioritize our relationships. The speaker shares his personal experience of losing a loved one and the comfort found in the promise of being reunited with them in heaven. He encourages us to cherish the time we have left and strive to live a life worthy of pride in our final moments. The tears we shed in moments of sorrow are a testament to the depth of our love and should be embraced. Ultimately, the speaker emphasizes the importance of love and connection with others and encourages us to live our lives with purpose and intention.

    • Climbing the metaphorical mountain of lifeStay focused on dreams and goals, but don't forget intangible values. Reach goals to help others and stay grounded.

Climbing the metaphorical mountain of life, which involves pursuing your dreams and achieving your goals, is an essential part of your destiny. However, it's crucial not to get too focused on material possessions and lose sight of the intangible, valuable things in life. When you reach your goals, you'll be in a better position to help others in ways you may not have imagined. The speaker emphasized the importance of staying grounded and maintaining perspective throughout the journey. Despite the challenges, the speaker expressed pride in their progress and promised to continue sharing their thoughts with the audience each week. Ultimately, the message was one of perseverance, growth, and the importance of staying true to oneself.

#523: How to Keep a Happy Relationship Happy

#523: How to Keep a Happy Relationship Happy

Most marriage and relationship advice books focus on solving problems.

But my guests today argue that we shouldn't wait until problems arise in our relationship to work on strengthening it. Instead, they say, when times are good, we should think about how to keep that good, and act to make it even better.

Their names are James Pawelski and Suzann Pileggi Pawelski, and they're husband and wife. James has a background in philosophy, and they both have backgrounds in psychology. They combined insights from both fields to write the book Happy Together: Using the Science of Positive Psychology to Build Love That Lasts. We begin our conversation discussing how most relationship advice falls short, the biggest myths people have about relationships, and the contrast between Plato's and Aristotle's approach to relationships. We then dig into the role emotions play in a relationship, particularly passion, and what we can do to continue to cultivate and experience positive emotions in a marriage even after being together for years. We then dig into how our character influences our relationships and how our relationships influence our character. James and Suzann share insights on how and why to focus on our strengths, help our partners develop their strengths, and even go on a "strengths date" together. We end our conversation talking about the power of appreciation in relationships.
