The Backwards Law: Stop Chasing Happiness. Become Anti-fragile Instead. | Gad Saad PT 1

    enSeptember 19, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Focus on fulfillment instead of happinessPursue intrinsically interesting skills and relationships for fulfillment, even in hard times, as true happiness is a result of this fulfillment. Be aware of brain preferences and adapt to modern life for overall well-being.

Happiness cannot be directly pursued as it is a result of a set of behaviors and experiences. Instead, focusing on fulfillment, which can be achieved through working hard on intrinsically interesting skills and building meaningful relationships, is the key to a good life. This fulfillment can be experienced even during times of grief or hardship. Additionally, it's important to understand that our brains have evolved certain preferences and behaviors, some of which may no longer be adaptive in modern times, leading to potential mismatches and challenges to our overall well-being.

    • Understanding Our Evolutionary Past for Modern HappinessRecognize and address the mismatches between our evolutionary past and present to build meaningful relationships and accept ourselves for improved happiness.

Our ancestors evolved in environments of caloric scarcity and social relationships were crucial for survival and happiness. However, in today's world, we face different challenges such as caloric abundance and social isolation. This mismatch between our evolutionary past and present can lead to health issues and unhappiness. To live happier lives, it's essential to recognize and address these mismatches. For instance, we've evolved to have around 150 close relationships, but in modern society, we may feel lonely despite living among millions. To improve our happiness, we need to build and maintain these tight bonds. Additionally, we must learn to know ourselves and accept our imperfections. Perfectionism, for example, can be detrimental if taken to an extreme. By understanding ourselves and our evolutionary background, we can make conscious choices to live in a way that aligns with our needs and enhances our overall well-being.

    • Understanding the importance of authenticity and acknowledging the need for changeRecognize the need for change, build a frame of reference based on values, prioritize authenticity, and make decisions that align with values despite potential consequences.

Recognizing the need for change and having authenticity are crucial steps towards personal growth. Our perception of reality is subjective and influenced by our beliefs and values. It's essential to acknowledge that our brains simplify the world for us, and this simplification can lead to distortions. To navigate this, we can choose to build our frame of reference based on our values, but it's essential to stay grounded in reality. Authenticity is a priority, but it can be challenging to balance it with other considerations, such as maintaining relationships or adhering to deontological principles. Ultimately, we must weigh the potential consequences of our actions and make decisions that align with our values, even if it means going against popular opinion or societal norms.

    • Navigating moral dilemmas with introspection and humilityTo make informed decisions, identify a personal 'north star' and stay authentic to it, even if it means missing opportunities. Introspection and humility help navigate complex moral dilemmas and foster healthy relationships and personal growth.

Introspection and humility are essential for navigating life's complex moral dilemmas. A narcissistic approach, which denies the possibility of mistakes or the need for apologies, hinders healthy relationships and personal growth. To make informed decisions, one must identify a personal "north star" and determine which actions align or contradict it. Freedom of speech, for instance, is a deontological principle that contributes to human flourishing and should not be compromised based on political or personal biases. Being authentic and true to one's values, even if it means missing out on opportunities, is ultimately more important than being pragmatic.

    • Authenticity and intellectual variety for personal growthBe authentic in expressing ideas, even in face of criticism, and embrace intellectual variety for personal growth.

Authenticity and intellectual variety are essential for personal growth and happiness. The speaker emphasizes the importance of being authentic in expressing one's ideas, even if they are met with criticism or opposition. He uses an example of satirically mocking a public intellectual's statement about gender being on a spectrum to illustrate this point. Additionally, the speaker stresses the value of intellectual variety and the importance of being open to challenges and different perspectives. He mentions Sam Harris as an example of someone grappling with a complex problem in a world where ideas are often reduced to headlines and memes, and encourages the audience to embrace intellectual diversity for their own growth.

    • Exploring new ideas and engaging in respectful debatesEngaging in respectful debates and standing by our beliefs, while acknowledging what we don't know, is crucial for personal and intellectual growth.

We all need a way to make sense of the complex world around us. While we may not agree with every idea or perspective, it's important to engage with them authentically and respectfully. The process of scrutinizing ideas, even if they come across as naive or silly at times, can help us grow and become more resilient. As Seneca once said, strong trees are those that have been exposed to severe wind stressors, and the same applies to our ideas. Engaging in respectful debates and being willing to stand by our beliefs, while also acknowledging what we don't know, is essential for personal and intellectual growth.

    • The importance of truth and freedom for personal happiness and societal progressEngage in intellectual debates, don't shy away from difficult conversations, be aware of potential consequences, and advocate for truth, freedom, and open dialogue.

Truth and freedom are essential for personal happiness and societal progress, but defining and agreeing on what constitutes truth can be challenging. The speaker's background and motivations can influence their perception of truth, and the potential consequences of promoting false narratives can be far-reaching and detrimental. The speaker emphasized the importance of engaging in intellectual debates and not shying away from difficult conversations, even when faced with opposition or disagreement. The reference to the Stanford Prison Experiment and "The Gulag Archipelago" underscored the potential for individuals to unintentionally contribute to harmful systems and the importance of being aware of the second and third order consequences of our actions. Ultimately, the speaker advocated for the importance of truth, freedom, and open dialogue in fostering a healthy and flourishing society.

    • Finding fulfillment through various pursuitsPeople find joy and pride in diverse activities, from restoring old cars to using advanced business tools, and protecting personal data is essential.

The pursuit of truth and freedom are essential for living a fulfilling life, but these concepts don't need to be defined strictly. For instance, some people find immense pride and joy in restoring old cars, and eBay Motors provides the necessary parts and resources to keep these cherished rides running smoothly. Meanwhile, in the business world, staying competitive requires utilizing advanced technology and platforms like Shopify, which offers a comprehensive suite of tools for growing businesses. Additionally, safeguarding personal data is crucial, and DeleteMe helps protect privacy by removing personal information from data brokers and people search sites. In the realm of knowledge, truth comes in various forms, such as axiomatic and empirical, with the latter being subject to ongoing evaluation and refinement in the scientific community.

    • Universal Phenomenon of Gender Role SpecializationBiological and evolutionary roots of gender role specialization exist, and understanding novel problems is crucial for growth

The speaker argues that gender role specialization, such as girls playing with dolls and boys with trucks, is not a social construction but a universal phenomenon with biological and evolutionary roots. He plans to build a "nomological network" of evidence from various fields, including different cultures, species, developmental psychology, and history, to support this claim. He emphasizes the importance of understanding how to approach and learn from novel problems, even if not all decisions are correct. The speaker's epistemic humility allows him to present himself authentically and never question his past or future statements.

    • The value of a generalist perspective and consilienceApproaching problems with a generalist perspective and a 'consilient' mindset can lead to significant discoveries and innovations, as exemplified by Leonardo da Vinci. Consilience, the unity of knowledge, can benefit our brains as prediction engines and improve our ability to tackle novel problems.

The ability to approach problems from a generalist perspective, with a "consilient" mindset, can lead to significant discoveries and innovations. This idea, as discussed in the interview, contrasts the specialist approach commonly rewarded in academia with the value of being a polymath. The ultimate example given was Leonardo da Vinci, who excelled in various fields from painting to engineering and anatomy. Consilience, a term introduced by E. O. Wilson, refers to the unity of knowledge and the agreement on fundamental facts across different disciplines. Our brains, as prediction engines, can benefit greatly from this interdisciplinary approach, allowing us to tackle novel problems more effectively. Additionally, the interview touched upon the idea that predictive abilities are crucial for happiness and success in life, with marriage and work being two key areas of focus.

    • Men and women in relationships: Different but complementaryRecognizing and respecting unique perspectives and needs in men and women leads to a successful marriage, with evolutionary psychology providing insight into their differences.

Understanding and appreciating the differences between men and women in relationships is crucial for a successful marriage. According to the speaker, these differences can lead to confusion and friction at the beginning of a marriage, but with research and effort, they can be understood and resolved. Evolutionary psychology provides insight into these differences, with men being more responsive to sexual infidelity and women to emotional infidelity. This is due to the evolutionary concern for paternity uncertainty in men. The speaker emphasizes that a thriving marriage brings greater joy than any amount of money, making it a valuable investment in one's life. The speaker's own experience of 21 years of marriage underscores this point. Overall, the key takeaway is the importance of recognizing and respecting the unique perspectives and needs of both men and women in a relationship.

    • Men and Women's Different Emotional Responses to InfidelityMen focus on sexual infidelity due to genetic concerns, while women prioritize emotional infidelity. This disparity can lead to misunderstandings and poor communication between the sexes. Evolutionary psychology offers insights into these differences and their origins.

Men and women have evolved differently when it comes to emotional responses to infidelity. Men tend to be more concerned with sexual infidelity due to the potential risk of passing on their genes to another man's offspring. Women, on the other hand, are more affected by emotional infidelity as it is a greater predictor of a man leaving emotionally or metaphorically. This difference in responses can lead to misunderstandings and non-intersecting ways of communication between the sexes. Additionally, having a broad range of interests and the ability to draw analogies can lead to a more consilient mindset and better scientific discoveries. Evolutionary psychology provides practical value by helping us understand why people behave the way they do and why men and women may speak and respond differently to certain situations.

    • Embrace a playful, curious mindset and explore diverse interestsA curious, broad-minded perspective can lead to breakthroughs and innovations in science and other areas of life

Having a playful, curious mindset and a broad range of interests can lead to breakthroughs in science and other areas of life. The ability to make connections between seemingly unrelated disciplines and perspectives can lead to new insights and innovations. Nobel Prize winners often have this quality, as they excel not only in their specific field but also in other areas. This broadness of interest allows for a more holistic view of the world and the ability to approach problems from different angles. Additionally, engaging in new interests, such as history, can lead to unexpected discoveries and a deeper understanding of the world.

    • Exploring uncomfortable ideas broadens our perspectivesQuestioning concepts and historical realities through an evolutionary lens can expand our understanding of human behavior and culture.

Our perspectives can be expanded through questioning and exploring new ideas, even if they initially make us uncomfortable. The speaker in this conversation shares their journey of questioning the concept of gender being a spectrum and the unease it brought them. They realized their issue wasn't with the concept itself but with being told they couldn't question it. This experience led them to explore historical realities using an evolutionary lens, specifically through the work of Darwinian historians. An example of this is Laura Betzig's study of the Old Testament, which demonstrated the correlation between male social status and the number of women or concubines they had in the text. This application of an evolutionary lens to historical documents highlights the explanatory power and coherence of the framework in understanding various aspects of human behavior and culture.

    • Exploring new perspectives for effective navigation and understandingContinuously expanding knowledge and understanding from various perspectives helps navigate life effectively and gain unique insights. Avoid oversimplification and limit beliefs, and continue to explore new ideas to gain a holistic view of the world.

Expanding your knowledge and understanding of various perspectives can help you navigate life more effectively and give you a unique perspective on the world. This can be particularly useful when dealing with complex decisions or understanding others. However, it's important not to get trapped in oversimplification or limit yourself to one perspective. Instead, continue to explore new ideas and concepts to gain a more holistic understanding of the world. This not only allows you to better understand others but also helps you avoid being influenced by limiting beliefs or ideas. Additionally, the speaker shared a personal experience of experiencing choice paralysis when faced with the decision of which books to bring on a trip, highlighting the overwhelming feeling of not knowing enough compared to the vast amount of knowledge available.

    • A childhood love for fiction shaped this individual's perspectiveFrom Stephen King to Dostoevsky, fiction offers unique insights into the human experience, but this individual finds it hard to make time for it amidst current interests.

This individual's deep connection with fiction started in childhood and has shaped his perspective on the world. He attributes his love for reading to Stephen King, who captured his imagination and changed his life. For years, he exclusively read fiction due to its ability to provide a rich and immersive experience. However, as he grew older and his interests shifted towards understanding the world from various angles, he found non-fiction more appealing due to its density of information. Despite recognizing the value of fiction, especially in exploring evolutionary imperatives and the human condition, he struggles to find time for it due to the demands of his current interests. He encourages others to explore fiction, particularly works by authors like Stephen King and Dostoevsky, as they offer unique insights into the human experience.

    • Exploring Human Complexity through Russian LiteratureRussian literature offers unique insights into human nature due to the country's history, and understanding individuals' motivations is crucial even if their beliefs differ from ours.

The complexity of human nature can be explored through literature, particularly Russian literature which is known for its unflinching look at humanity. The speaker shares his personal experience of attempting to read "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoevsky but not finishing it due to other interests. He expresses his curiosity about why Russian authors are uniquely capable of generating such literature, suggesting it may be due to the country's history of struggling with freedoms. The speaker then shares his fascination with Winston Churchill, who, despite having beliefs that the speaker may not agree with, is interesting to him because of his willingness to risk his life to prove his physical bravery and his strong belief in his country. Through these examples, the speaker highlights the importance of understanding the complexities of individuals and their motivations, even if they hold beliefs that may be different from our own.

    • Courage and Pride in the Face of AdversityDisplaying courage and pride in one's country can lead to respect and eventual success, even in the face of failure and adversity.

Even in the face of failure and adversity, maintaining pride in one's country and displaying courage can lead to respect and eventual success. The example given is of a historical figure who, despite being ousted from power and wanting to regain his position, chose to join the front lines of a war to be as close to the danger as his troops were. His bravery and unorthodox actions earned him the respect of his peers, demonstrating that sometimes, taking unconventional paths can lead to great impact. This historical figure's story highlights the complexity of the human condition and the importance of understanding different perspectives, particularly those rooted in religion and history.

    • Finding common ground despite differencesRespect others' beliefs and embrace diversity, even if they differ from our own. Challenge religious claims only when they contradict scientific facts.

Despite our differences in beliefs and perspectives, we can still find common ground and coexist respectfully. I was touched by a man's sincere prayer during a car ride, even though I'm not religious myself. This experience reminded me that it's important to respect others' beliefs, even if they differ from our own. It's only when religious claims contradict scientific facts that I feel compelled to challenge them. The fact that most people are religious and being an atheist is an outlier is a fascinating observation. This anecdote, like a perfectly ripe California avocado, is a reminder of the beauty and richness that comes from embracing diversity and understanding that everyone has a unique story to tell.

Reality Is An Illusion: Exit the Matrix and Design Your Dream Life! | Donald Hoffman (Replay)

Reality Is An Illusion: Exit the Matrix and Design Your Dream Life! | Donald Hoffman (Replay)
It’s pretty normal that you think of reality being the world around us, the tangible things you see and interact with. You probably even include and make space for how your emotions influence perception and tie that into what creates your reality. Donald Hoffman is joining Tom for another mind-bending episode to challenge if we’re actually living in a false reality. Donald Hoffman is a cognitive scientist that has argued against reality and the limitations of spacetime. Some questions being posed in this episode that will stretch your beyond your limits are: -What is beyond spacetime? -What is the true structure of objective reality? -Is it possible evolution has shaped us in a way that guides our behaviors and therefore how we see objective reality? -His idea of comparing our current reality to that of living in a virtual headset is being taken to the next few levels up and exploring the strategies we use to survive the game of life. "America Is About To Crash Into A Brick Wall" | David Friedberg PT 1
Welcome to another power-packed episode of Impact Theory, I’m Tom Bilyeu!  In this episode, I’m joined by David Friedberg, a self-described “extreme optimist” who believes that capitalism – specifically entrepreneurship – is the fastest way to improve human productivity and potential, unlocking a more abundant and sustainable future for all.  Today we’re getting into the economic challenges the U.S. face, specifically the risks associated with high debt relative to GDP, and how excessive taxation to service this debt can stifle investment and have lasting detrimental effects on economic growth. We explore the transformative potential of gene editing, including promises for agricultural advancement and just be the answer to sustainable nutrition for a rapidly growing global population. We also examine the balance between technological progress and regulatory oversight, the societal divide over adopting new innovations, and how AI could redefine creativity and productivity.  If you're serious about innovation and understanding the future of our economy, you won’t want to miss this episode. This is just Part 1 of our conversation, so make sure you don’t miss Part 2 of this convo for even more wisdom from David Friedberg. #1 Thing For An Intern or College Student To Do

On today's episode, we have another fireside chat with the VaynerMedia interns from 2018. They ask me questions ranging from advice that I would give to someone in their 20s, to where I draw my inspiration from. I also touch on making excuses and how so many people spend too much time trying to justify a reason not to execute something when in actuality they should just execute. Even though I was chatting with mainly college students, this is a great episode for humans aged 20 - 100. We all need to adopt a similar mindset of empathy and patience. Enjoy!

    960 The Voice of Truth

    960 The Voice of Truth

In your life, where does the voice of truth come from? Whose whispers gain your greatest attention?

Maybe it's the constant failures and short-comings.

Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACThttp://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact

Maybe it's the faults of your past.

Maybe it's your own belief that you're never good enough.

Why is it that we hang out with our stumbles and failures questioning our worth?

Never once did God hesitate when He created you; fearfully and wonderfully made, knowing every hair on your head.

Yet where is the voice of truth?

Is it the naysayers, the badgers, the mockers? Is that where your voice of truth is being solidified and defined?

I want you to really think about whom you are putting your trust in.

The K.I.S.S. ~ The Voice of Truth!

REFLECTION: Today, I want you to reflect on these three questions.

    1. Where is the voice of truth coming from?
    2. What is the voice of truth telling you?
    3. How are you using the voice of truth in your life?

If you are hearing God, the only voice of truth, then you know you are loved, given a gift of salvation, and grace for your life's journey.

That's the voice of truth you need to be listening to.

Not the negative CRAP, the doubts and drama of others, and not the daily sagas of self-centered mindsets.

It's all about control, earthly control. What happened to Heavenly control?

Let God wash away the torment of lies that threaten your greatness He's creating within you.

Let it go! Let God have it all!

    Give Him your heart.
Dedicate your life to glorify Him.
Rejoice with the voice of truth.

As you go out this week...

"One step at a time leads to miles of greatness!"

May God bless you this week in all your steps, in all your endeavors. Seek His guidance. Praise His name. The voice of truth!

Mishka Shubaly On Forgiveness, Authenticity & Life As a Sober Artist

Mishka Shubaly On Forgiveness, Authenticity & Life As a Sober Artist
If you're a long-time listener of the podcast, then you’ve treated yourself to several of my conversations with today's guest. You know this guy well as my gravelly voiced, eminently talented, always charming yet generally disheveled, periodically homeless co-host — now back for a record 6th appearance on the RRP. Mishka Shubaly doesn’t care much for formalities. But if you need a resumé, his goes something like this: A self-professed povertarian, Mishka writes true stories about drink, drugs, disasters, desire, deception, and their aftermath. He began drinking at 13 and college at 15. At 22, he received the Dean's Fellowship from the Master's Writing Program at Columbia University. Upon receiving his expensive MFA, he promptly moved into a Toyota minivan to tour the country nonstop as a singer-songwriter, sharing the stage with artists like The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Decemberists. At 32, Mishka got sober and shortly thereafter began publishing a string of bestselling Kindle Singles – short non-fiction novellas — through Amazon. His writing has been praised for its grit, humor, fearlessness, and heart. The Long Run*, his mini-memoir detailing his transformation from alcoholic drug abuser to sober ultra-runner is one of the best-selling Kindle Singles in Amazon history. Mishka's third solo album, Coward’s Path — the finest set of miserable and sad songs you might ever hear– will be released on October 2, 2015. His new book, I Swear I'll Make It Up To You: A Life on the Low Road* hits bookstores March 8, 2016. If you're new to this podcast, dig the Mishka vibe and want to hear more, check out RRP episodes 27,31,65,95 & 104. That's about 9 hours of Mishka to keep you busy. Enjoy! Rich
