Happy New Year ladies and gentlemen, it is time for three hours and live in local radio here in WNTK. 99.7 FM due for New Hampshire and WUVR 14.90 AM at 98.9 FM in Lebanon, New Hampshire. This is Saturday Sports Talk, your weekly catch up on what's happening with high school and college sports around the upper valley. Greg Fennel with you. The resumption of high school academic action. Well, some schools back in action, some not till Monday.
signals a big resumption of athletic activity out there a lot of basketball last night including the first of the home and home sets between arch rivals handover and leban and girls and boys and back to back action last night we will take a look at all the scores from uh... around the upper valing and there were quite a few last night on the first friday of the new year it has been uh... slow course around darkness the uh... month of december is off time for students and for student athletes but things are slowly getting back up to speed
With one program enjoying some success that hasn't been seen in quite a while, women's hockey getting its second win in a row after losing their first 14 of the season. We'll talk about that game with Harvard in just a moment. And we get some time. We'll take a look at the standings around Vermont and New Hampshire. Unfortunately, the folks who are in charge of the VPA's website have forgotten how to do statewide standings. All they're doing is leagues right now, so that's probably the best we can give you and tell you how things are. As we head into the month of January,
and start to get really serious with high school sports uh... as we have our usual herky jerky month of december couple weeks of action in the holiday but now that we're in january things are steaming up and uh... starting to get a lot more active so we'll be able to talk about that a bit on the program today as well six oh three eight four three eight six two three i believe is the phone number to call in you'll find jesse waiting for you on that one and then when i'm all done today will have like we usually do valley buzz from about ten o six until twelve o'clock
with change in the lineup with rich parker away bob hingston's going to come in and guest host the program with rob water today that will start again at ten o six here on nt k and uv are to wrap up your three hours of life and local here on this saturday january the third we do have some slight technical issues here i think i have a shortened uh... my uh... equipment so i may cut out here in there and try not to do it in other words if i sit perfectly still
The only thing moving in here will be the VU meter on the mixer and my mouth. And if we can keep it to that, we should be okay. Alright, let's see what happened in the world of sports last night because not everything that happened on Friday night made it to Saturday's newspaper. We are going to read about it.
For a team that went into the NBA season as strong favorites to repeat as champions, the Boston Celtics month of December was decidedly, well, math. They went eight and six, bumped up to nine losses on the season, which seems a lot for a team that's defending its NBA title. But the Celtics appear, at least with a couple of results here in the month of January, to have refocused their energies. They got things started with a short three-point win over Minnesota on Thursday night, and then last night took a stick to the Houston Rockets.
109-86 in a game that wasn't even that close. The Celtics did not have one of their star players in the lineup last night in Jalen Brown missed the second straight game with a shoulder strain, but Sam Houser picked up a little bit of the slack on Thursday night. He was not heard from on the scoreboard last night, so it was left to Derek White and Jason Tatum and Peyton Pritchard to do all the work. White with 23 points, Tatum and Pritchard 20 each as the Celtics pulled away for that 109-86 win.
They had a three, 10 point lead after three period, three periods scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter. Had that 21 point lead with four and a half minutes left when coach Joe Missoula decided to empty his bench. Christop's Presingus 11 points five rebounds in his first game back after four away with a sprained ankle. The Celtics in the middle of a Midwest Western swing of four games right now. They'll be back in action on Sunday.
at Oklahoma City. On the scoreboard around the NBA last night, the one game to note was the L.A. Lakers contest last night, and I had it up here on the scoreboard a moment ago. They beat the Atlanta Hawks 119 to 102. Lebont James with 30 points in that contest. That's his 563rd 30-point career, a game of his career, which broke Michael Jordan's record. The asterisk on this one, Jordan did it in a little over a thousand games over 15 seasons. It took James about 1500 games over 22 seasons.
to get to that record. Sacramento was a 138-133 winner over Memphis last night. San Antonio edged the Denver Nuggets 113-110. Cleveland outscored Dallas 134-122. New Orleans a 132-120 winner. Over Washington, the Knicks lose to the Oklahoma City Thunder 117-107. Orlando knocked off Toronto 106-97. Detroit was a 98-94 winner over the Charlotte Hornets last night.
There is trouble in Miami. The Heat have suspended Jimmy Butler for seven games for what they call conduct detrimental to the team. This came a day after Butler publicly admitted that he did not think he could find joy playing for the Heat and was not certain if he'd be able to play for them anymore. The team has decided to put him on the sidelines for essentially is a six game restaurant road trip. But knowing that he'll lose about $2.3 million altogether,
The NBA Players Association says that it will appeal the punishment, which it considers excessive and inappropriate. So Jimmy Butler could be coming to an NBA team near you, the Heat, saying that it will here all offers for a potential trade. If anybody can pull an off, that'll be worth the value of Jimmy Butler. The Garth basketball teams are slowly getting themselves back into action. They had that double header sweep of Colby Sawyer up at lead arena on Wednesday.
The men are off for a bit. I guess what I was going to say was January is usually the point when league play starts, and that is certainly the case, but the Ivy League men won't really get going until next week. Dartmouth men are off until they host Penn a week from today. But the women are back in action. They start their Ivy League schedule at Brown this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Big Green goes into the contest 6 and 7 on the season, having won that game against Colby Sawyer handling on Wednesday, 94 to 46. In fact, it is opening day for league play for all.
Ivy League, women's basketball teams, Harvard will go to Yale, Columbia visits Penn, and Cornell will go to Princeton in the other matchups around the league. NHL last night, five games on the schedule. Shootout win for Florida over Pittsburgh 3-2. Chicago edged a Montreal 4-2. Blues blanked Ottawa 4-0. Edmonton was a 3-2 winner over Anaheim. Nashville in Vancouver beat the Canucks by a score of 3-0. Bruins are up in Canada, playing the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight.
to try to pick off a win against one of their original six rivals. Meanwhile, nearby Ottawa hosting the World Junior Championship semifinals. The afternoon game finds Sweden meeting Finland. The Swedes beat upstart Latvia in the quarterfinals a couple of days ago. Three to two while Finland was a 5-3 winner over Slovakia. Then defending champion U.S. will take on Czechia at 7.30 tonight. The Americans outscored Canada and Switzerland in their last two games, 11-3 following a group play over time loss to the Finns.
Meanwhile, Chequia eliminated Canada with a goal in the final 40 seconds of regulation two nights ago. Dart with women's hockey is on a two-game win streak. Told you before that they needed to put their weak offense together with their strong defense and they'd start to get some results. Well, they beat UNH at the beginning of the week and last night got to come from behind. Overtime win over Harvard down in Cambridge, Mass. 3-2, the score. Laura Fuoco scoring with seven and a half minutes left in regulation to force overtime. Lauren Messier had the winner 54 seconds into.
the overtime period. Two teams turn around and meet up at Thompson Arena today. Meanwhile, Dartmouth men's hockey, which started off so well. Six-game winless streak. They've only won two with their last seven as they head to Merrimack for non-league play tomorrow afternoon down in North Andover, Massachusetts. ECAC Hockey Action, all non-league play yesterday. Cornell beating UMass 4 to 2, UNH over Princeton, 3 to nothing. RPI beat Yale 5 to 3, and it was Union over Brown 3-1 correcting myself. Those last two games were
League games, other games involving Hockey East last night, UMass Lowell beat Michigan Tech 3-2, Denver over main 2-1 and Merrimack was a 5-2 winner over Army West Point. NFL Week 18 has arrived. Final games of the regular season with two coming up this afternoon. Meanwhile, the Patriots playing out the string on the very depressing season that we've seen from them, 3-13 as they go up against the likely number two seed in the AFC playoffs, the Buffalo Bills,
That'll be at Gillette Stadium tomorrow at 1 o'clock. The Patriots definitely will be missing wide receiver Jalen Polk, center Ben Brown, cornerback Christian Gonzalez and safety Jugil Peppers all have been ruled out. Meanwhile quarterback Drake May is listed as questionable with a right hand injury and tight end hunter Henry questionable with a foot injury among other.
aches and pains for the uh... patriots coming into that finale today's games open up at four thirty with cleveland going up against Baltimore no game of any real meaning there it's the nighttime game it's going to be fun since an adi visiting pittsburgh as the bangles try to fight their way into the final playoff spot for the a f c they need a whole lot of help they have to win tonight and then sit through tomorrow hoping that both the broncos and the miami dolphins lose the broncos have to go up against the chiefs even though
Patrick Mahomes won't start for a little bit Carson Wentz behind center for the top seed in the AFC, but that Miami game could get interesting to a tag of Aloha right now looking unlikely to play against the Jets, meaning Tyler Huntley would have to start the week 18 contest for Miami, which needs to win to get into the playoffs. And they have not played very well when Tua has not been behind center so far this season. Meanwhile, Dallas owner Jerry Jones says that he's not under any unusual time frame pressure when it comes to deciding on the future of head coach
Mike McCarthy, there is a time frame in place, however, because McCarthy's contract is set to expire on January 14th, nine days after they wrap things up against Washington tomorrow. If teams want to talk to McCarthy, they have to get permission from Dallas. But after the 14th, it won't matter anymore. He won't have a contract. He can talk to whoever he wants and possibly stay in Dallas or fight another opportunity. Meanwhile, could Mike Vrable be coming back to the sidelines of an AFC East rival he interviewed with the New York Jets for their opening
as head coach yesterday. He and former Washington coach Ron Rivera both have talked about the possibility of joining the Jets who are looking for a new candidate after firing their coach Robert Salma earlier in the year. So the season almost done for college football with a couple of bowl games last night. The first responder bowl with Texas State over North Texas 30 to 28 and the Duke's Mayo Bowl where PJ Fleck of Minnesota got five gallons of mayo dumped on his head after a win.
They beat Virginia Tech 24-10. I cannot think of anything more disgusting than having Mayo poured over my head. One game on the bowl schedule today. The Bahamas Bowl has Liberty going up against Buffalo, at least it's two teams with eight wins. Then we get to the serious stuff. The FCS Championship Monday night sees North Dakota State against Montana State. Should be a lot of fun. Fun, Frisco, Texas and the college football playoff semifinals are next week with Notre Dame and Penn State playing on Thursday in the Orange Bowl and Ohio State against Texas.
in the Cotton Bowl on Friday night. Other notes from the world of sports. The ageless Charlie Morton has a new place to pitch the Baltimore Orioles signing the 41 year old to a one year 15 million dollar contract yesterday. Part of helping cover up for the loss of Corbin Burns who signed a free agent contract last month with Arizona. Morton through 30 starts for the Atlanta Braves this past year, 165 and a third innings, 8 and 10, 4.19 earned run average.
Not bad for an old guy. The Orioles also signing 35-year-old Tony Yuki Sugano of Japan to help fill out on the rotation. The Oscar Hernandez will go back to the LA Dodgers. He has signed a contract to stay with the team after going on the free agent market three years at $66 million. Woodstock native Keegan Bradley, he's going to coach the rather captain, the Ryder Cup team for the United States later on this year, but he's trying to play himself into the roster as well.
so far through two rounds of the season opening century out on the capaloa he is three shots off the pace at thirteen under par led by he'd that came out to yama tournament uh... of winners of p g a tour events from last year although scottie sheffler's not playing having cut his hand while preparing christmas dinner over the holidays ski news the women racing a crash agora in uh... slavina i believe that isn't sera hector from switzerland has picked off a win in a giant slalom there to run time of one minute
54.86 seconds, a good second and a half ahead of Albania's Laura Colteri with New Zealand's Alice Robinson filling in in third place. Meanwhile, everybody's favored around here. Michaela Schifrin reporting earlier in the week that she hopes to be back on the snow, quote, in the next week or so. That's after suffering that deep puncture wound on the crash on her GS run at Killington back at the end of November. Now, all this means it should be back on snow training when she's back competing is another question altogether. The men's World Cup circuit

and played his first full season with Inner Miami and MLS this past year, among other items in his checkmark box. That's it for Read About It at 9.20. We're going to come back and look a very busy high school basketball schedule when we come back. We're going to be traveling to Manchester, England today, though, for our bump music. Listen around here on Saturday Sports Talk.
Pity girls! Pity boys! Have you ever heard your mommy shout? Nice and nice! Go!
I'm up on 9.25. You're on a Saturday Sports Talk. I've been with you on this first Saturday of January. You were able to spend ample time with family over the holidays and kept it smart on New Year's Eve. We are highly getting into our
busy time of the winter season it's a little herky jerky in the month of december as we get uh... the season started in mid-December then get cut off by the holidays for a couple weeks new hamster teams don't play anything of significance between christmas and new year's by that i mean games that count on the standings they usually use it for holiday tournaments if they do anything at all uh... from out will sprinkle a few games in here and there of uh... league play nature you know you got uh... cases like
uh... hard for boys hockey that has the bithillier tournament every year and those games actually count in vermont for state standings but not for new hampters so sometimes it's hard to get from our new hamster teams to play each other in uh... in that kind of a circumstance but now that we're past january first and uh... starting into the new year we're starting to see a lot of games go on and last night mark the uh... first dates for handover and eleven against each other on the basketball floor it was a uh... back-to-back showdown last night
That saw the teams split the games on the girls side, Levenin improved 2-3-1 on the year with a 45-30 victory over Hanover, which surprisingly is winless through four games so far this year. Very rare to see that from the Bears who are always very strong in New Hampshire Division 2. Ainsley Delisle, the star of the game for the Raiders. She had a game high 21 points to help Levenin improve to 3-1 on the season. Then on the boys contest it was all Hanover's. They dominated Leven in 55-20.
Bears are three and one under Denver Green, who's taken over as the head coach at hand over with Ben Davis has moved down to Lebanon to become athletic director. Lebanon dropping to one and three on the year. Roy Lucas game high 19 points pacing the Bears, followed by 15 from Wyatt Daggle, Miles Saunders with seven for the Raiders to wrap up that one. Elsewhere in boys basket ball last night, Rivendell dropped a contest to Grace Christian. I believe that was 64-44. I didn't do a very good job of typing that onto my cheat sheet here.
Grace Christian is out of Bennington and seems to recruit their entire team from Eastern Europe. Pavley Mikich had 27 points to lead Grace Christian to the win last night. They are now 5-1. Rivendell dropped 1-4. Nolan Bourne had a pretty good game. 15-5 assists and 3 rebounds. Evan Woodard had 10 boards to go with his 8 points so nearly had a double double and Josh Douglas following up with 9. Raptors trailed by 9 at halftime and were able to cut that gap early in the third quarter to 4 points.
before five three-pointers by Grace Christian, a barrage of sort in that final frame helped them pull away for the victory. Also on the scoreboard last night, Stevens was no competition for Guilford. Golden Eagles routing the Cardinals 84-37. Stevens drops to 1-3 on the year. New board with a pretty good win. They knocked off Menandock 69-61. Tigers looking pretty good at 3-1 so far.
Up north, Woodsville maintains first place in New Hampshire Division 4. They beat Groveston 64-39, and Nate Campus has Keir Sarge Cougars going on all cylinders right now. They lead to Hampshire Division 3 at 5-0 after last night, edging Hopkinson in a pretty good contest, 55-52. We'll take a look at New Hampshire standings in just a little bit.
Vermont Boys basketball last night, West Rutland all over Sharon 72-10, the Phoenix drop to 0-5. That forgot a good win as the Edge Randolph, one of their nearby rivals, 57-51. That gets the Panthers to 2-1 on the season. Windsor boys still looking for their first victory of the season. Green Mountain took the Yellow Jackets last night by a score of 59-38. Windsor dropping to 0-6. White River Valley, well, they're not looking for their first loss. They just haven't had it yet.
They beat Proctor 77-46 and the Wildcats now are 6-0 at the top of the standings in Vermont Division 3. Over on the girls side of the scoreboard last night, Guilford edging, Stevens in a defensive battle, 27-22, changed that, 27-24. Stevens falls to 1-5. Mascoma rolled over by Conant 68-19. The Royals are 1-4. Newport 58, Manadnock 50. Tiger girls also doing well. They're up to 5-1 on the season.
Grofton beating Woodsville, 59-37, Woodsville girls are 4-3. Keir Sarge, edged by Hopkinson, 39-32, royals are rather recoogers, have dropped 1-4 on the year, and Newport Market beat Mount Royal 42-22, and the Knights dropped 2-3 on a rough night for girls basketball in the Upper Valley. If you're paying close attention, you did not hear a Mascoma Conant Boys basketball score. I have not found that anywhere. No reports of local paper, nothing in the interweb,
Unfortunately, because it's Mascoma battling with Keir Sarge in two other schools for the top spot in Division 3. So weirdly it would have been nice to know how they did down at Conant last night, but no report available. Girls, hockey, Lebanon, Stevens, Keir Sarge fell below the 500 mark they lose at home to Beakman Town Central out of New York. 3-0 was the score there. Raiders are now 2-3 on the season. It's going to be a very busy day today as well with a lot of basketball and your usual Saturday hockey on the schedule.
on the hoop side heart for boys of a pretty good contest to play tonight they are uh... this afternoon i should say at fair haven coming in off of a route of uh... spring field on thursday night seventy seven thirty four uh... game that i caught for three quarters really impressed with uh... what my god that is doing with the hurricanes uh... i haven't seen them in a few years this year's squad is interesting because there are no seniors on its end player varsity roster but they don't play like they're young and you would think that's probably case because they've been having some success over the past
three or four years between the years of Mike coming back to the to the program and the couple that Jeff Thomas led beforehand raising the level of Hartford Boys basketball play I'd say to the athletic level on a success standpoint that we see from some of their other sports the only thing is they just haven't gotten that first place trophy yet they got that monster named Montpelier at the top of the T2 standings but they look at Fairhaven as a pretty good test after that route of Springfield the overnight
And we'll see, 2.30 over in Fairhaven. That'll be a fun one to check out. Woodstock Boys are at home to Bellows Falls. That's also a 2.30 start. On the girls' side, things starting noon today with the Woodstock Girls over at Mill River. Brattleboro coming up to play the Hartford Girls here in town, Hanley Gym. That's a 2.30. Also a 2.30 today, the rest of the want girls hoop slate, Oxbow going to Blue Mountain, Long Trail visiting Rivendell, Sharon going down to Leland and Gray. Thatford and Windsor, that's always a fun contest. They keep running into each other.
with very good basketball teams in this year. Certainly is another one of those cases. Windsor girls looking very good, looking like they're going to compete for another Vermont Division III championship this year. Today should be a good test. White River Valley girls hosting Twin Valley this afternoon. On the boys hockey schedule today, Hanover heading down to Nashua South, Lebanon, Stevens, Mass, Goma looking for a win at Timberlane. And the Hartford boys are at home to take on Champlain Valley off of a good start so far to their year.
That includes that win last week at the Bethelia tournament at Wendell Barwood Arena. The boys game is going to be prefaced by the Brattleboro girls hockey team playing Hartford at 2 o'clock so you have a girls boys double header going on at the WBA. Beak been down central after that win over Levitt and Stevens. Ciarasar yesterday staying in town to play Hanover at 2.40 at Campion ranked this afternoon.
Woodstock girls hosting Burren Burton at Union Arena tonight. Already underway, Newport Wrestling and the Minnekel tournament this weekend. Baskoma joining Manchester Memorial and Winnesquall in a four school matchup at Merrimack that starts at 10 o'clock. Hartford Throwers are up at St. John's Berry for their portion of indoor track action this weekend. That goes on today. The rest of the activity competing at UVM with the weekly races at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Stevens Bowling, defending state champs. They are hosting Sanborn Raymond in Gostown.
as we speak down at Maple Lane and aside from that Hartford visit to UVM tomorrow, the Hanover and Lebanon indoor track teams have a meet tomorrow at UNH starting at about 2.30 in the afternoon. We'll look at standings a little bit more deeply as time permits, but before we go to our next break in a couple of minutes, it can get a little bit of info out there to you. Talked about boys basketball. Again, it is early in the year, so when you look at the D3 standings,
And you see six undefeated teams keep in mind the fact that it's only anywhere between three and five games played so far. It's an 18 game regular season. A lot's going to change. And a lot of these teams are going to play each other. For instance, Keir Sarge at 5-0, leading the whole affair right now, looking ahead to their schedule. They've got a big one coming up on Monday as they entertain Mascoma in their first home game of the season. Strangely enough, Nate Camp's crew.
has played nothing but road games so far, and they've been successful in all of them, beating Newport, Prospect Mountain, Stevens, Fall Mountain, and then last night, that nice win over a very good Hopkinson team. So that's one to look forward to on Monday. St. Thomas is 4-0, Raymond is 4-0, Mascoma, 4-0 pending, whatever happened last night down at Conant, and then Campbell and Belmont, both 3-0, and Newport, right on the outside, looking in at 4-1. So we're off to some interesting stuff as far as teams in our listening area are concerned. Lebanon in Hanover,
Might be going in different directions right now in Division 2. Hanover again with a new coach in Denver, Green. 3-1 so far. They are tied for fourth place in Division 2. Pembroke, 4-0, Merrimack Valley, Oyster River, both 3-0. Cobrount, South Egan joining Hanover at 3-1. Meanwhile, Blinden Salz trying to get some traction with Levitt and Boyce basketball. They're down near the bottom of the standings right now at 1-3. Only Plymouth and Bishop Brady, both windless, are below the Raiders.
in the divisional standings division four we talked about woodsville how well they're doing early on six and oh they lead the crowd uh... in d four with uh... conquered christian just behind at four and oh hinsdale three and oh uh... and again uh... a lot of these teams gonna run into each other as we get uh... a little bit further on down at the season in girls basketball d two in new hampshire eleven three and one good start for coach jeff solo right now time for fifth in the state
Hanover strangely in the basement, just not used to seeing the Bears do that, but hopefully we'll find them finding their form real soon and moving up the ladder a little bit. D3 teams in our area, Newport doing the best right now at five and one. They are in the sixth-place spot. They've got four undefeated teams in the division between Prospect Mountain, Guilford both five and O, Fall Mountain and St. Thomas both four and O in D3 play, and Division four is owned by Littleton right now, and with Cobra grooved in a holy family all undefeated.
As for the listening area, Woodsville in the middle of the pack at four and three, Mount Royal in the bottom half at two and three in Sanofi, still looking for their first win in league play. So that's a quick look at what's happening with New Hampshire basketball, what happened to the schedule last night, what's going on today, taking a break and coming back to take a look at what's going on, Dartmouth Sports, as they start to slowly ramp up for the important part of the Ivy League basketball and ECAC hockey season. That's next. This is Saturday Sports Talk, WNTK and WUR.
you
Heading 940 here on a Saturday sports stop with humanitarian Ramones. I was mentioning before that I was over at the Hartford Boys basketball game doing a little scouting. I'm going to be broadcasting a couple of their games for other stations in the next month or so. Walking into the gym, I crossed paths with Joe Gillum for the first time in a real long time. And I think the only reason I didn't recognize him is because he's got a little bit of grade in his beard, just like I do. But nice to see him. The thing he told me was,
He listened to the program, but he doesn't like the Ramones all that much. I still have to throw some out there for you anyway, Joe. Even if you don't like the Ramones, you're okay with me. It was nice to see Joey and talk to him for a little bit on the way in. Saturday Sports Talk is where you are at 941. Greg Fennell with you for a little bit longer. Then Valley Buzz will take over the airwaves after news and weather at the top of the hour. Rich Parker is away this weekend, so Bob Kingston's in to fill in for the program. He'll be joined by Rob Woodard. That's my guess.
1006 is where it'll all start and continue until noon here to wrap up the three hours of live and local and NTK and UVR. And again, I'm remiss not to mention this every single week. I should do that. Thank you so much to the folks here at the Hilton Garden in Lebanon, Lebombard Road next door to the new climbing wall center up the road from Dartmouth coach. They've hosted us now for, I don't know, four or five years, something like that ever since the ownership decided to shut down the
satellite studio here in levenin and they've been uh... wonderful host is always nice to come in here first thing on a Saturday morning set up for radio and talk sports for you for a little while here uh... i'm going to complain i'm bound to do that every so often uh... vp a has done a poor job this year and this falls under the folks who uh... run the s p live website uh... when it comes to producing standings for vermont sports
All you get right now are league standings and in some of these league standings there are teams particularly when you try to get hockey information that don't have hockey programs. I'm not sure who's in charge of it but they don't know what they're doing and need to get their act together. It was only recently that some schools in the state were added whose schedules weren't even in the VPA website for the coming season. You wouldn't know that Brattleboro was a school in Vermont
two weeks ago by looking at the vp a online scoreboard page and finally they got you know popped in the other day i'd only care because i've broadcast their games down there uh... so i really can't give you an idea of where everybody sits as far as standings are concerned i can only tell you uh... how teams are doing for the most part with uh... hard for boys hockey in action this afternoon welcoming sampling valley out of division one should be a good contest for thought bebo and company they are five in one on the year the only loss a five three affair
to hardwood back in mid-December but aside from that they've got winds of a cold Chester, Brattleboro, Lebanon, Burr and Burton, most recently, Rutland. Four o'clock start for that one. And the Hartford girls opening up that double header at two o'clock today, Wendell Barr would arena with coming in off a win off of Champlain Valley, Mount Mansfield, and running a two shutout streak behind goaltender, Nella Bowen. They beat Lebanon back on the 21st by two-nothing count. According to what's on the
vp website this is their first game for the girls since december twenty-third as the brattleboro comes in at two o'clock today the bears very young winless on the year at uh... oh and five but they have played some teams closely including love it and losing a one-nothing game to the raiders earlier this year uh... that's the best i could tell you as far as hockey is concerned for harford high right now and uh... if you get into the league standings at all which is something it tends to get overshadowed by state standings that don't seem to exist right now on the vp website
You don't get a whole lot of good context of what's happening out there. Last night, for the most part, marked the start of the Southern Vermont League season. Although technically, Hartford got its first game in on Thursday when they beat Springfield 77-34. Windsor, winless so far in league play, their 0-6 overall. So you got Hartford at the top, Windsor at the bottom of the SVL's B division, five schools involved in that. A division got started last night, Rutland winning down at Brattleboro.
to maintain first place in that division but again only one game in league play so far as things get started there there has been a little more league action in the smaller school divisions like c division where white river valley shares the first place spot with twin valley that makes any match-ups between the two of them an exciting possibility uh... today unfortunately is not one of them that's the girls were meeting in that one but uh... white river valley will go down to
Whitingham, where Twin Valley High is located, next Friday, 7 o'clock game between those two, Twin Valley Wildcats are 5 and 1, White River Valley Wildcats are 6 and 0, game 2, look forward to there. Elsewhere in the SVL standings early on here, Woodstock 2 and 1 in C Division played, take down 3rd place, 3 and 2 overall.
Rivendell yet to win a game in league but they've only played one they're one and four and But Bobo Sharon is in the division in the basement of that one having not won a game at all in any sort of basketball this season on the girls side of League play with Hartford at home to take on Brattleboro this afternoon Hartford girls basketball three and one overall with one win in league play tied with Windsor Which is three and no overall, but we know Windsor is very strong in a d3 championship potential this season
See Division finds White River Valley and Rivendell Woodstock in the three, four and five spots, but they've yet to play League action so far, so their standing is determined by what they've done overall. White River Valley girls are undefeated, they're four and oh. Rivendell's two and three Woodstock is one and four. And the Sharon girls looking for their first win also are winless both in D Division play at 0 and 2 and also winless in four games so far this season.
So I'd love to be able to tell you a little bit more about what's going on with the Vermont high schools from a state perspective. Unfortunately, we're not going to be able to do that. Let's go back to NHIAA for a second. I'm going to hold on to Dartmouth stuff for the final segment of the program. Let's get back over to hockey for a moment where we've been kind of eyeing from a distance, a handover team that has shown some good stuff and some not so good stuff occasionally so far this year. But for the most part,
uh... the uh... boys hockey programs done pretty well the handover bears went down to manchester last week for the annual brine c stone memorial tournament it's an eight-team event that's held a jf k coliseum in manchester and it's very tough to get through it because you're playing some of the metal in division one which is also course handovers regular schedule but you're doing it compressed with three games in three days as many as four and four if you do well enough and uh... even though handover finished
Fifth in the tournament, the only thing that kept them from going further was their first game. They played bow to a 4-4 tie. I believe bow was the ones who had to come back to force the overtime. No scoring in overtime, so it goes on the record officially as a tie, but they had to shoot out afterward and that's where bow got the victory to move in the winner's bracket and drop Hanover to the loser's bracket. Hanover, I believe, went out from there to get the fifth place designation. But they get back to action against Nashua South Pelham
uh... today i believe they play that game tingsboro massachusetts not sure if that's the case but uh... it's the continuation of a five-game road trip they ended the first part of the season for the holidays with a six-three win at salem they uh... have the national south pellum game and then on wednesday is a big one they go down to cockard the crimson tide has been the standard barriers of new hampshire division one hockey for several years rang off three straight state championships
And they were in a position to go for a fourth when they were upset by Salem in the quarterfinals at Everett Arena last year. Conquered Tor through the stone tournament. Won the thing with a dominant 3-1 win. I think it was in the final. I'm blanking on who they beat. I want to say Bedford, but that may not be right. So a real big test for Hanover on Wednesday. Then they go back down to Everett again or down to that part of the state to play bow in a rematch a week from today. So some real big games coming up.
for Hanover boys hockey which will not be home again until January 20th when Concord comes up here could be a lot of fun when those two get together. So to see where Hanover is in the standings so far is a little bit counterintuitive because of the fact that they've only played two league games. In fact, everybody has played no more than three. So it's really early in the standings for New Hampshire Division I hockey. But of course, you could say the same thing about everything. Division II, Lebanon, Stevens, Mascomas at the bottom,
with an oh and three record but uh... they haven't played a whole lot of games so far as you can gather from that uh... mark their back in action in timberling today historically that has been a winnable contest uh... timberling join eleven steven's maskoma at the bottom of the standings both at oh and three so opportunity for uh... decashment of the raiders to grab a victory in that uh... vision today division three boys hockey uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh...
uh... of a lee with uh... ten teams know nine teams so you'll need to finish sixth or better maybe fifth or better to get into the tournament some work to do for uh... kara starch planet here pardon me as we uh... get to the resumption of honky season and girls hockey of course in hampshire still just a one division sport that handover continues to dominate although uh... not so much in the regular season standings two and one kitson in the uh... top four tied for the number four spot
with strangely enough eleven steven's cure search but again uh... only three games max for anybody in the vision so far things will start to pick up this weekend and we'll be able to talk more about it real soon nine fifty is the time we come back uh... look at what's happening with our sports is things start to warm up here for the resumption of league play both in basketball and hockey coming up next on saturday sports top around
We all do not fail on social, we do not close you around, I'm in joy, I'm all there, and I won't go far, spread me high, spread me high. Oh, I feel like I'm in shock, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can, I feel as if I can
Take out today, in your usual way. I'm best of promises, I insist. He give us up, a bad answer, best of promises. Dead promises, won't you please. Give me some energy.
I'm 54 here on Saturday Sports Talk. I'm not sure why this idea got on my head last night driving back from Brattleboro, but I just felt like digging into the catalog of punk music from Manchester, England, from back in the 70s and 80s, of course, when punk exploded in the mid 70s, as far as English bands were concerned, it was sex pistols in the clash. That led the whole thing. But Manchester had its own unique sound, as you heard from some of the music we threw in today. Yeah, the Buzzcocks opening up with noise and noise, of course, that's from
uh... singles going steady there uh... stand out album early in their careers of course lead singer pete shelly did some solo work as well after uh... bus cocks took some breaks you heard one of those homo sapien from before joy division another uh... band out of ancestor england with transmission remains always got flavor owns on the show well what's the manchester connection well that song susie is a head manger one of their early songs that was on the uh... set list for their second concert ever in uh... england uh... in manchester england
at the Manchester Apollo, December 21, 1977. Slaughter and the dogs were cranked up really high and wrapped up with the very bizarre but very fun fall. And Mr. Farmis, that's your bump music here on Saturday Sports Talk. Greg Fennell, with you. We give you a musical education along with a high school and college sports education every week. Want you to be well-rounded, you know, have discussions with the family. Dartmouth Sports starting to warm up a little bit. Women's hockey got into action last night and got a nice win.
Dartmouth lost its first 14 games of the season for new coach Laura Crowell, who's rebuilding the program from scratch, it would appear. Now starting to see some success. They got an overtime win against UNH on Monday and then last night down at the Bright Center in Cambridge, Mass. Got a 3-2. Come from behind win over Harvard. Here's what happened. Dartmouth had the lead just a minute and a half into the contest on a Kenzie bachelor goal. Harvard tied it six minutes later through Brook Manning.
and scored on a power play in the final 20 seconds of the second period to go up to 1 and hold that lead into the third. At the 12-30 mark, Laura Fuoco finished off passes from Izzy Powell and Lauren Messier to tie the game for Dartmouth and then Messier getting the winner just 54 seconds into overtime to lock down the victory. So Dartmouth now 2 in 14, 1 in 10 in league play, Harvard struggling also to 11 in 1, 1 in 10 in league play. They'll turn around and play again today.
up at Thompson Arena. That is supposed to be a three o'clock face off. Meanwhile, everybody else just getting back to action. Women's and men's basketball had that double header with Colby Sawyer on New Year's Day with the expected results both Dartmouth teams winning very handily. The early game going to the women 94 to 46 game in which Dartmouth scored at least 22 points in every period to win going away and improved to six and seven.
on the season scoring leaders of Victoria Page has been probably the best player for coach Laura Simino so far, Simino so far this year for Dartmouth, led the way with 19 points. Zaina Bozil who plays mostly point guard but is trying to find her range as a shooter. She had 12 in that one and Sierra Carson and Lucia Bonavic both came off the bench to score 10 points each for the women in that one. They open up Ivy League play this afternoon. They're going to be down at Brown at two o'clock and then play two tough ones on the road next weekend.
at panda and prince and i think we could still expect the tigers in columbia to be the preseason favorites first home league game is not so january twentieth when uh... lafia i love yet yale is here don't ask me where that came from as for dark men they also easily won over colby so you're on wednesday one oh eight to fifty five getting a double-digit performance is from five players led by jadon williams with twenty one ryan corners with fifteen fourteen from camera and back to me off the bench kakon or adminson
Had 13, Brandon Mitchell Day with 12. Didn't get a whole lot of action elsewhere, but almost everybody else who was healthy did well for the big green in that one. It's an off weekend for Coach McLaughlin and crew. They start league play next weekend with a trip down to Penn. No, Penn is up here. And that's a solo game for the weekend, by the way. They're not getting into the two game weekends until Martin Luther King weekend when Princeton is up here on a Saturday.
and then Monday the holiday, Dartmouth the way down for Matt May at Yale. Men's hockey, we're trying to figure out what kind of a team that Coach Reed Cashman has this year. The men's hockey team was very successful early on this year, winning five straight and then getting a verdict in overtime in game number six, but they've gone two, four in one since. They're down at Merrimack tomorrow for non-league play back in league action next week.
