S4 E6 | How Grief Affects Relationships With Jim Cress

    enSeptember 18, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Grief is a natural part of setting healthy boundariesGrief work is essential for healing and growing in relationships, whether it's from the loss of life or the end of a relationship. It's a process of acknowledging and working through emotions, leading to hope and healthier relationships.

Grief is a natural and important part of the process when it comes to setting and maintaining healthy boundaries in relationships. According to Jim Kress, a licensed counselor, grief work is a significant aspect of his practice, and it's not limited to the loss of life. The end of relationships or marriages can also bring about grief. Grief is often seen as an enemy, but Jim emphasizes that it's actually our friend. It's a process that helps us work through our emotions and eventually find hope. The many stages of grief, including denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, are all essential parts of this process. By acknowledging and working through our grief, we can move forward and build healthier, more fulfilling relationships. Remember, grief is not something to be ashamed of, and it's an important step towards healing and growth.

    • Healing from a relationship's endRecognize and address emotions constructively, seek support, and move forward with faith in growth and healing.

When dealing with the end of a relationship, it's essential to process the grief in a healthy way. Anger, self-blame, and feelings of betrayal are common, but it's crucial to recognize and address these emotions constructively. Revisiting the relationship's past can help identify the truth, but it's beneficial to have support from a counselor, friend, or pastor during this process. Remember, it's essential not to dwell on the past alone, as God never wastes a wound, and the other person may move on and find happiness. Overall, acknowledging and dealing with the emotions of a relationship's end is a necessary step towards healing and growth.

    • Embrace the grieving process as part of lifeFocus on personal healing, let go of owning others' sins, and trust the process to move forward and entrust the person to God

Grieving the end or damages of a relationship is a personal commitment to reality and a sacred space between you and God. It's important not to be deceived or mock God by expecting others to face consequences for their actions. Instead, focus on your own healing process, which may take time, and let go of owning another person's sinful behaviors. Trust your own grieving process and view it as a friend, not an enemy. Remember, the pain won't leave until you've fully grieved, allowing you to move forward and entrust the person to God. Counselor Jim Kress encourages us all to embrace the grieving process as part of life.

    • Identifying Red Flags in RelationshipsRecognizing and addressing potential relationship issues through resources like 'Is this normal? 15 red flags you may be missing in your relationships' can lead to healthier relationships and personal growth.

Access to professional counseling and understanding the truth can significantly improve our relationships and help us set healthy boundaries. We're grateful for Lisa TerKeurst and Proverbs 31 ministries for providing this resource through their Therapy and Theology podcast. A valuable free resource they've shared is "Is this normal? 15 red flags you may be missing in your relationships" by Lysa TerKeurst, which is available in the show notes. By recognizing and addressing potential issues, we can make progress towards healthier relationships. Ultimately, when we know and live the truth, it can transform our lives.

    S1 E6 | Narcissism ... What It Is and What It Isn’t

“Narcissism.” It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot, but what does it really mean? And how does it affect your life?

So … what do we do if we’re in a relationship with a narcissist? And how is narcissism different than a personal struggle with selfishness? And what does selfishness teach us about our own need for God, even if we don’t struggle with narcissism?

In this episode of Therapy & Theology, we'll unpack narcissism through a conversation between Lysa TerKeurst; her personal, licensed counselor, Jim Cress; and Proverbs 31 Ministries Director of Theological Research Dr. Joel Muddamalle.

    After listening, you will …

    • Understand the medically defined character traits of a narcissist as well as the difference between narcissism and selfishness.
    • Discover that the desire of a narcissist — to receive admiration and praise and to control others — is a human need that we all struggle with on some level and that only Jesus can truly fulfill.
    • Learn that compassion and healthy boundaries are necessary if you are in a marriage, family or working relationship with a narcissist.

A note from Proverbs 31 Ministries: The content in this podcast covers the topic of narcissism.

Narcissism is a personality disorder that requires a medical diagnosis. Proverbs 31 Ministries does not condone labeling another person with a personality disorder. Please see the links below if you need help finding a counselor.

S1 E3 | Stop the Shame Scripts Holding You Back

S1 E3 | Stop the Shame Scripts Holding You Back

All of us have facts that make up the stories of who we are. But we’re not just the sum total of these facts. There’s also the impact from these facts, which lives with us beyond the occurrence of the devastation, abuse or pain that happened to us. And in the middle of that impact, chances are there are some Shame Scripts holding us hostage from living in the freedom God so desires for us.

A Shame Script can simply be defined as a faulty belief or perception of self, others and/or God. Shame Scripts back us into isolation, making us imprisoned by lies, like …

    You are unwanted.
    You are an inconvenience.
No one really cares about you.
If you’re not performing or achieving something, you don’t have value.
    You’re just not good enough.

In this episode of Therapy & Theology, Lysa TerKeurst, Jim Cress and Joel Muddamalle dive into how Shame Scripts reveal themselves personally in their lives, and this episode also discusses practical tips and tools for how we can find our way out of the shame caving us in.

After listening, you will be equipped to:

    • Live true to your most healed, healthy, whole, holy, surrendered-to-God self and not the version of yourself that’s haunted and held back by shame.
    • Replace scripts of shame with words of life by uncovering the truth, found in Genesis, of how God really made us and what He made us for.
    • We pray this conversation blesses you, friend!
