Technology in Warfare: Ray Aussie discusses the critical role of advanced technology in Ukraine's warfare, highlighting the RadNote radiation detector that operates independently and reliably monitors crucial areas affected by conflict.
Ray Aussie shared his experiences from Ukraine, especially how technology is playing a crucial role in modern warfare. His company, Blues, develops systems that convert physical products into data-driven intelligence services. One example is the RadNote, an autonomous radiation detector that operates on solar power and keeps monitoring even when the power infrastructure fails. This technology is vital in a war-torn country where traditional systems are vulnerable, as it helps track radiation levels around crucial nuclear sites like Chernobyl and Zaparija. Ray emphasized how these innovative technologies adapt to challenges in real time, showcasing the importance of resilient communication in conflict and disaster situations. Moreover, he highlighted the collaborative spirit of tech innovators working amidst adversity, developing solutions that address immediate dangers, while underlining the profound impacts of AI and networks in defense strategies during the war.
Smart Monitoring: Real-time monitoring of environmental data through smart devices is crucial for safety and informed decision-making, especially after disasters like Fukushima.
In response to environmental crises like the Fukushima disaster, there's a pressing need for real-time monitoring of radiation and other data using smart devices. By connecting sensors to a network, we can gather and share vital information, helping experts make informed decisions. This approach not only enhances our understanding of the environment but also helps prevent future disasters by promoting awareness and early detection. The combination of old-school measurements and modern technology leads to better preparedness and responsiveness. Essentially, creating intelligent machines that communicate data seamlessly allows us to gain a clearer picture of our surroundings and protect communities from potential threats.
Intelligent Devices: Creating intelligent devices for remote areas involves overcoming challenges in energy management and connectivity, allowing companies to focus on their main services rather than technology hurdles.
Building intelligent devices that can function autonomously in remote areas presents significant challenges such as power management, connectivity, and data security. Developers must navigate issues like energy harvesting, hardware design, and ensuring reliable data transmission. Successful solutions should enable companies to focus on their core services without being hindered by technology complexities.
Enabling Connectivity: Cellular technology streamlines device connectivity, enabling small businesses to utilize advanced IoT solutions while ensuring security through built-in SIM cards and cloud services.
In modern technology, especially with IoT, securely connecting devices is crucial. Using cellular technology with integrated secure elements like SIM cards simplifies this process, allowing devices to communicate without complex configurations. This enables small to medium-sized businesses to adopt advanced technologies, enhancing their products and services, while leveraging cloud capabilities for better data management and analysis.
Tech Shift Insights: Embracing technological shifts, like the move from traditional software to cloud services and now to AI, is crucial for businesses to stay competitive. Recognizing early changes can help in crafting innovative products and services that meet evolving customer needs.
In 2005, a pivotal memo outlined the upcoming shift from traditional software to cloud-based services, highlighting how Microsoft needed to adapt its mentality from a box-driven approach to a more connected, internet-based model. This foresight led to the creation of Azure, showcasing the importance of recognizing technological shifts early. Today, we face another significant disruption with AI and machine learning emerging as new enabling technologies. Companies must open their minds to how these advancements can transform their products and services, much like the shift to cloud services revolutionized business. By embracing this change, businesses can position themselves to better serve customers and remain competitive in an evolving landscape.
Tech Transformation: AI and IoT are revolutionizing industries by enabling direct data collection from products, improving efficiency, and enhancing customer experiences. As these technologies become standard, businesses must adapt to harness the opportunities they create.
New technologies such as AI and IoT are transforming industries and the way businesses operate. As these technologies become more accessible and ubiquitous—much like semiconductors did in the smartphone era—companies will be able to enhance their products and services significantly. Manufacturers now have the ability to gather data directly from their products, improving customer experiences, optimizing resource management, and addressing sustainability concerns. Use cases in various sectors, such as healthcare, transportation, and even portable sanitation, showcase how intelligent systems can drive efficiency and innovation. Understanding these transformations allows businesses to identify new opportunities and adapt to a rapidly changing marketplace where technology will become a standard expectation.
AI and IoT Evolution: AI and IoT advancements are enhancing accessibility for businesses. Focus on using technology to solve specific problems and create customer value. Efficient data usage and innovative interfaces are key to unlocking potential, while improved connectivity will enable further opportunities.
AI and IoT technologies are becoming more accessible, allowing businesses of all sizes to leverage them effectively. The key is not just to implement AI as a feature but to focus on creating real value for customers by solving sector-specific problems. It is crucial to collect and use data efficiently, even if it’s not perfectly clean, to identify anomalies and enhance operations. Experimenting with new user interfaces, like querying data with LLMs, offers exciting possibilities. Future advancements in connectivity, such as satellite and new radio technologies, promise to further expand the potential of these tools. As the landscape evolves rapidly, there is a pressing need for skilled talent in hardware design to bridge gaps in innovation.
Value Creation: To succeed in hardware and technology, prioritize domain specificity and integrate various system understandings. This approach creating more value than generic solutions amidst rapid technological evolution.
Creating innovative hardware today is still complex, relying on systems thinking much like software development in the past. The most successful hardware developers integrate knowledge from various fields, understanding how devices work together. As technology evolves rapidly, focusing on specific domains can unlock more value than generic solutions, allowing startups to excel amidst constant change.
Value of Experience: Understanding large organizations is essential for aspiring developers. Gaining real-world experience helps young entrepreneurs tackle complex problems and create impactful technology rather than focusing solely on consumer products.
To truly succeed in developing technology for large organizations, one must first understand how these organizations operate. Gaining experience in big companies, government, or nonprofits significantly enhances one's understanding of complex systems and teamwork. This foundational knowledge helps young entrepreneurs make a meaningful impact by tackling larger societal problems, rather than just creating consumer apps. Mentorship can also play an important role in guiding their pursuits, as shown by influential figures who help others capitalize on their passions. Overall, fostering connections and learning from real-world experiences is essential for career development and innovation.

Alex Smith, Shane Battier, & Ravi Gupta - What Makes A Glue Guy? - [Invest Like the Best, EP.387]
This week's episode is special because it marks the launch of a new Colossus show: Glue Guys. My guests this week are the hosts of the new show, Shane Battier, Alex Smith, and Ravi Gupta.
Shane, Ravi, and Alex’s stories are remarkable. Each has been at the very top of their profession. Shane as an NCAA and NBA champion. Alex as the first pick in the NFL draft, 3 time-pro bowler, and 16-year NFL veteran. Ravi as a leader at KKR, and then as a critical leader turning around & building Instacart, and now as a partner at Sequoia. But those parts of their stories pale in comparison to the stories you’ll hear on Glue Guys.
Glue Guys is an unfolding manual for HOW to be a professional, a teammate, a leader, and even a friend and family member. In this episode of ILtB, we explore the general concept of glue guys—the people who are obsessed with helping the team win, whether they are the leader or newest member of the team. Please enjoy this conversation with Shane, Alex, and Ravi.

Gavin Baker - AI, Semiconductors, and the Robotic Frontier - [Invest Like the Best, EP.385]
My guest this week is Gavin Baker. Gavin is the managing partner and CIO of Atreides Management, and he has been on the show many times before. He is one of my favorite investors to talk to and this may be my favorite conversation with him. Gavin first started covering Nvidia as an investor at the turn of the millennium, making him the perfect guest to discuss all things AI and investing. There is so much detail in this discussion and I’m incredibly grateful to Gavin for sharing his wisdom with us again. Please enjoy this fantastic conversation with Gavin Baker.

This episode is brought to you by Ramp. Ramp’s mission is to help companies manage their spend in a way that reduces expenses and frees up time for teams to work on more valuable projects. Ramp is the fastest-growing FinTech company in history and it’s backed by more of my favorite past guests (at least 16 of them!) than probably any other company I’m aware of. It’s also notable that many best-in-class businesses use Ramp—companies like Airbnb, Anduril, and Shopify, as well as investors like Sequoia Capital and Vista Equity. They use Ramp to manage their spending, automate tedious financial processes, and reinvest saved dollars and hours into growth. At Colossus and Positive Sum, we use Ramp for exactly the same reason. Go to Ramp.com/invest to sign up for free and get a $250 welcome bonus.
