Pt 1: Married for $35?! Newlyweds Joe Amabile & Serena Pitt dive into the $ behind their wedding costs, combining finances, plus a Bachelor party story like no other!

    enSeptember 25, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Learning from Bachelor Nation Couple Joe and SerenaUnderstanding price to rent ratio is crucial when deciding between buying and renting a home. A ratio of 1 to 15 favors buying, while 21 or more favors renting. Nashville's housing market has seen significant price increases, making it essential to calculate the ratio for informed decisions.

Learning from this episode of Trading Secrets is that we have a special 2-part series featuring Joe and Serena from Bachelor Nation. They discuss their wedding planning experience, including costs, planners, and unexpected surprises. They also share insights into their working relationship, financial management, and even their journey through the green card process as an American-Canadian couple. Additionally, Jason discusses the importance of understanding the price to rent ratio when considering whether to buy or rent a home. A price to rent ratio of 1 to 15 suggests it's better to buy, while a ratio of 21 or more indicates it's better to rent. The analysis by Trulia reveals that Nashville's housing market has seen significant price increases since the pandemic, making it essential to calculate the price to rent ratio for informed decisions. Stay tuned for part 2 of Joe and Serena's interview, where they delve deeper into their careers, relationship with money, and future plans.

    • Rising Home Prices and Limited Inventory Make Buying a Home Difficult for ManyDespite increasing interest rates, home prices continue to rise, making it hard for buyers to enter the market. Renting remains more affordable than buying in many areas, but communication, compromise, and adaptability are crucial for managing finances and relationships.

The current housing market is becoming increasingly unaffordable for many Americans, with home prices continuing to rise despite increasing interest rates. The Case-Shiller National Home Price Index, which tracks monthly and yearly changes in home prices, is projected to show a 0.7% increase this week. This trend, coupled with limited inventory and high demand, is making it difficult for buyers to enter the market. Meanwhile, the cost of renting remains relatively more affordable than buying in many areas, with a price-to-rent ratio over 20. On a personal note, the hosts, Joe and Serena, have recently navigated the challenges of co-parenting two dogs and have found success in their new marriage, despite the financial and logistical complexities that come with it. Overall, the episode highlights the importance of effective communication, compromise, and adaptability when it comes to managing finances and relationships.

    • Planning a courthouse wedding takes time and effortA courthouse wedding requires an appointment to obtain a license a month in advance and another to get married, costing only $35.

Getting married at a courthouse is a more involved process than one might think. Contrary to popular belief, it's not a spur-of-the-moment decision. It requires planning about a month in advance, with an appointment to obtain the marriage license and another appointment to get married. The cost is also surprisingly affordable at $35. The experience itself can feel strange and unromantic at first, but the actual ceremony can be intimate and emotional once the couple faces each other and exchanges vows. Despite the couple's initial casual attitude, the emotions can be strong and the day can be memorable.

    • Saving money and reducing wedding pressure by getting married at a courthouseCouples can save money and reduce wedding pressure by getting married at a courthouse before officially planning a wedding. This approach can also expedite the application process for green cards.

Getting married at a courthouse before officially planning a wedding can save money and reduce pressure. This was the decision made by the couple in the discussion, who wanted to keep their wedding simple and untraditional. They also mentioned the potential benefit of getting married earlier for those dealing with immigration processes, as it can expedite the application for a green card. However, it's important to note that there are costs associated with the immigration process, such as lawyer fees and application fees. The couple in the discussion also emphasized the importance of having a support system, such as an immigration lawyer, to navigate the process. Overall, their experience shows that there are valid reasons to consider getting married earlier than planned, particularly for those dealing with financial or immigration-related challenges.

    • Costly and Time-Consuming Process of Obtaining US Work Visa or Green CardThe process of obtaining a US work visa or green card involves significant costs and time commitments, with various applications, interviews, and waiting periods.

The process of obtaining a work visa or green card in the US comes with significant costs and time commitments, especially for those who require expedited processing or prefer to maintain the freedom to travel between countries. The average cost of a US wedding is the highest in the world, reaching $29,000, but the opportunity for a sponsored wedding on a reality TV show was not pursued due to privacy concerns and the production aspects of the event. The journey to obtain legal residency in the US involves various applications, interviews, and waiting periods, adding to the stress and pressure for individuals, particularly those with sponsoring employers.

    • Couple prioritized their vision over financial gainSean and Catherine opted for a self-planned wedding, valuing the experience and magazine coverage over potential revenue, with an industry projected worth of $70 billion in 2023.

Sean and Catherine chose to plan their own wedding instead of accepting a large payment for a televised event. They found value in the experience and the honor of being featured in magazines like People, rather than viewing it as a financial opportunity. The wedding industry in the US is expected to generate over $70 billion in revenue in 2023. Sean shared that they were fortunate to have Catherine's parents cover the wedding costs, but he couldn't disclose specific numbers. The couple's decision to prioritize their vision for their wedding over potential financial gain reflects their values and the evolution of their public personas.

    • Unexpected wedding costs: The surprise of twinkly lights and greeneryBudget carefully, prioritize expenses, and remember the memories and experiences created on your wedding day are priceless.

While planning a wedding, unexpected costs can add up quickly, especially when it comes to decor and labor fees. The most surprising expense for one couple was the cost of twinkly lights and greenery for their ceiling decoration, which was much higher than they anticipated due to installation, taxes, and gratuities. However, when looking back at their wedding photos and videos, they felt that the beauty and memories created were worth the investment. The couple also emphasized the importance of careful planning and consideration, as well as seeking the help of a wedding planner to ensure thoughtful decisions and cost savings. Overall, the key takeaway is to budget carefully, prioritize expenses, and remember that the memories and experiences created on your wedding day are priceless.

    • Impact of payment structure on wedding budgetConsider investing in a good photographer and potentially a videographer, while saving on the cake to manage wedding budget.

When it comes to wedding planning, the payment structure can impact the budget. Wedding planners can be paid a percentage of the total cost or a flat fee. While those who charge a percentage are incentivized to spend more, those who charge a flat fee may quote higher prices. The top five vendor categories for weddings in the US are dress industry, photographers, grooms' attire, caterers, and cakes. The speakers shared that they felt their wedding planner and photographer were worth the investment, as these are the only things that last beyond the wedding day. However, they felt that they spent too much on their cake. Therefore, if you're on a tight budget, consider saving on the cake while investing in a good photographer and potentially a videographer.

    • Prioritizing Wedding Expenses: Focus on What Matters MostFocus on investments like videographers and photographers to capture special moments, consider bringing your own alcohol if allowed, and prioritize what matters most in wedding expenses.

While weddings can come with significant expenses, such as cake and alcohol, it's important to prioritize what matters most to you. The speaker shared how they were surprised by the high cake prices during their Charleston wedding weekend, which is known for being a popular wedding destination in the US. They also mentioned that they didn't even remember having a piece of cake at their wedding due to the excitement of the day. Instead, they suggest focusing on investments like videographers and photographers to capture the special moments. Additionally, if you have a following, finding a venue that allows you to bring in your own alcohol can be a way to save money. The speaker also shared their experience working with brands like Minted and Ring Concierge for their wedding invitations and a band, respectively. Overall, the key takeaway is to prioritize and make thoughtful decisions when it comes to wedding expenses.

    • Making a responsible choice during a bachelor party in Las VegasEven when presented with an opportunity to take a risk, it's important to consider responsibilities and potential consequences. Sometimes, calculated risks can lead to unexpected rewards with the help of knowledgeable friends.

Even though the speaker had the opportunity to gamble with a significant amount of money during her husband's bachelor party in Las Vegas, she chose to be responsible and not risk losing it all. Instead, she enjoyed the rest of her bachelor party and took it easy. Another takeaway is that sometimes, taking calculated risks, like playing the high limit slot machine with a voucher, can lead to unexpected and substantial rewards. The speaker's friend, Alan, who is a lucky gambler, played a role in their jackpot win by using his experience and knowledge to help them maximize their chances. Overall, the experience served as a reminder to enjoy life's moments while being mindful of responsibilities and potential risks.

    • Staying responsible with gambling winningsWin big in gambling? Remember to save for taxes, not let emotions dictate spending, and plan for future financial needs.

Winning a large sum of money in gambling can be an exhilarating experience, but it's important to keep a clear head and not let emotions take over. The speaker shares a story of hitting it big in a slot machine in Vegas and the importance of not losing sight of the winnings and the potential consequences of blowing it all. He emphasizes the importance of being responsible with the money, especially when married and planning for a family. The value of money can easily be lost in the excitement of gambling, and it's crucial to remember to save for taxes and not let the winnings turn into losses. The speaker also reflects on his own spending and investing habits, acknowledging that they are different and emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between the two.

    • Personal values shape spending habitsUnderstanding and respecting each other's financial values and goals is crucial for building a strong financial foundation in relationships.

People prioritize and justify their spending differently based on their personal values and experiences. Joe, who loves nice clothes, finds it harder to justify spending $25,000 on a sport coat compared to losing the same amount on a stock market investment. On the other hand, the speaker, who values experiences, finds it easier to spend large sums on dining out and traveling. Their upbringing and personal perspectives also influence their spending habits. The speaker's father, for instance, would disapprove of material purchases, but the speaker sees value in experiences. As they discuss their financial habits, they reflect on the importance of open communication and alignment in managing money as a couple. The second book the speaker is writing, "Talk Money to Me," emphasizes the significance of discussing and understanding one's financial values and goals with a partner to build a strong financial foundation in relationships.

    • Joe and Serena discuss their personal and career plans, future in Bachelor franchise, and a surprise guestListeners learned about their courthouse marriage, green card process, and future plans within and outside the Bachelor franchise, with valuable insights from David Arnold's experiences.

Key takeaway from the podcast episode with Joe and Serena is that they shared intimate details about their career navigation within the Bachelor franchise, their personal life, and financial management. In part 2, listeners can expect discussions on their future plans within and outside the Bachelor franchise, as well as a surprise Bachelor in Paradise guest. The episode also touched on Joe and Serena's courthouse marriage and green card process, with David Arnold providing valuable insights and clarifications based on his own experiences. Listeners learned that while the courthouse marriage is a meaningful experience, the green card process involves a 2-year temporary card for those married for less than 2 years before applying, and a requirement to reapply for a 10-year permanent card after the 2-year period. Additionally, after 3 years of being a permanent resident, one can apply for US citizenship, but holding both Canadian and American passports is allowed when traveling between the two countries.

    • High Costs of Early Reality TV ShowsEarly reality TV shows like 'The Bachelor' had high production and marketing costs due to massive viewership, with Trista's wedding reportedly costing $51 million and her talent fee $1 million in the early 2000s.

The cost of producing and marketing early reality TV shows, such as "The Bachelor," was significantly high due to the massive viewership they attracted. For instance, Trista's wedding on "The Bachelor" reportedly cost around $51 million, with Trista herself receiving a talent fee of $1 million. This investment paid off for the network, as the show had an estimated 17 million viewers for Trista's finale, making it a valuable marketing and advertising opportunity. However, it's important to note that these figures are from the early 2000s when the show was new and building its brand. Today, with the rise of streaming services and changing TV ratings, the landscape for measuring viewership has evolved. Nonetheless, the high costs of producing and marketing early reality TV shows underscore the perceived value of these programs in terms of advertising and PR.

    • Cautious spending and smart investingStay frugal with spending, but invest to make your money grow with a historical average return of 10% per year.

Having a tight spending tolerance and being cautious with investments is crucial, especially with rising interest rates and inflation. While it's important to be conservative with spending, it's also essential to make your money work for you by investing, even if you're risk-averse. The market historically returns around 10% per year, and you have time to recover from any potential losses. So, keep your spending in check but consider being a little more aggressive with your investments. Additionally, the energy and dynamic duo of Joe and Serena are always a delight to listen to. Don't forget to leave a review for a chance to win something from The Influencer Closet.

    • The Power of Clear Communication in TradingAsk questions and seek clarification to understand complex trading concepts, and simplify jargon to make it accessible to all.

David, Jamie, Lee, and Burnett discussed the challenges they've faced in understanding complex trading concepts and how they've worked to simplify them for themselves and others. They emphasized the importance of asking questions and seeking clarification when needed. To continue learning and growing in the trading community, they encouraged listeners to reach out to them with any questions or to sign up for training resources at trainingsecrets@jacenttardic.com. 175. Micah Lussier: From making $130k in tech to reality TV star. BTS of Love is Blind & Perfect Match, landing brand deals, and finding her core audience revealed!
This week, Jason is joined by Love is Blind Season 4 and Perfect Match’s Micah Lussier!

Although Micah’s time on the show did not end in marriage, she most certainly got the full experience of the experiment, having split from her partner Paul on their wedding day. After her time on the show, Micah has leveraged her newly generated platform into various brand partnership opportunities.

Micah gives insight to the two sides of her life in reality TV and previously working in tech, how the Love is Blind reunion was, what she thinks makes a season thrive or flop, a teaser about her time on Perfect Match, how she would describe her brand, how success can be defined in the tech space, and how she ended up on Love is Blind. Micah also reveals the behind the scenes of the timeline for Love is Blind, the departure process for her job in tech, how they talk about money on the show, and what she enjoys about going on reality shows. What other reality shows would she consider? When did she tell her job that she was on a hit reality TV show?

Micah reveals all that and so much more in another episode you can’t afford to miss!
