Critiques of the Film
Character Development:
- Critics note a lack of depth in character interactions, which could leave audiences with unresolved storylines.
- A particular focus was placed on the unrealistic portrayal of certain social dynamics under stress.
Ending and Continuity:

He called the magical chair because when he sits in it, he falls asleep. I go into a coma, and I've been in a real coma, and so I know what I'm talking about. When disaster strikes, will you be prepared? This is Prepping 2.0. With authors and prepping experts, Glenn Tate and Shelby Gallagher. Get ready, Prepping 2.0 coming in 3, 2, 1.
Welcome, everyone. This is Shelby Gallagher over here at Prepping 2.0. Joined by my co-host on the show and co-host of Night Glen Tate. One of the most popular movies right now is, surprisingly, a pro-prepper one. It's called Homestead, and we tell you about it and give you our take on the positive and negative messages. In the movie, and, as always, remember, the only thing harder than planning for a disaster is explaining why you didn't. True or false, the characters in Homestead had ample, fresh drinking water.
According to the movie, it seemed like they did. And was that important? It was important. Where do listeners think we're going with this?
It's really important. It should be in your top two, three, four things to make sure you have ready to go and ready to implement any sort of system that you put in place to make sure you have clean purified water, especially in any sort of collapsed situation. So you need filtration, you need to be able to store it, you need to be able to create the cleansing effect of purified water.

filtration systems. I've had somebody reach out to me and say, so what's going on? It seems like they're running out of things. You know what, this time of year during gift-giving season and kind of end-of-year closeouts, it doesn't surprise me many of our vendors that happens too. But keep checking in with them, send them an email, and they'll make sure that you have everything you need for water filtration.
Shelby, what is something very cool that Patreons will be receiving in the next few days? Oh, so exciting. It happens every year. This is one of the perks to being a patron. You get a major huge huge. When I say huge, I know because I'm working on this back end of this drop box link link to all
321 episodes. The after shows for 321. Yeah, the regular shows in addition to the after shows. Just the after shows. Because, you know, Patrons, I mean, you can get the regular show. Anyone can get the regular shows on our website. But this is the after show versions. So it's the regular show and the after show. That's what I meant. We call it the full show. The full show. You get both. So that's coming soon. Keep in mind, this is
That's actually because of the hugeness of it, the humongousness of it. Yes, we used to mail out thumb drives, which in retrospect was really dumb. Yeah, but now where it's almost like, do we have like, these are big files. So just get ready. They're on their way. It takes a little bit actually to get those put together. So they're on the way.
Fun fact of postal regulations, a thumb drive is just wide enough to not be a first-class letter at 71 cents. Instead, it's about $2 to mail one. And that's dumb that we were mailing out. Yeah, that's a lot. Now we just give you a link. And what you can do with the link is download all the shows onto your own thumb drive and have it and listen to it.
whenever you want. Top 100 items that disappear first based on a list from Bosnia survivors available on our website prepping2-0.com under the appropriately titled button top 100 list of things number 93 now this again is a list of things that go the quickest
cigarettes we don't think that you should stockpile cigarettes for a couple reasons just because it goes fast doesn't mean you have to stockpile it i mean you know and so cigarettes and it's not like i mean we don't smoke and we think smoking is
very bad for you and not a great addiction to have when your supplies are cut short, but we're not being all preachy. We have a very practical reason for not suggesting to stockpile cigarettes, and that is they don't last forever. They dry out, and they're really expensive because of all the taxes. I don't know what a carton cost, probably a hundred bucks, I'm guessing. Yeah, they're fragile. I mean like 80 bucks, something like that. You have to keep them like temperature controlled.
you know, dry environment. I think if you were looking for something to give you a little zing, I think you can do that. And keep in mind, this list came out like in the early 90s. Yeah, back before cigarettes had all the taxes on it, I remember as a child in the late 70s, early 80s, cigarette vending machines were everywhere. And anybody, including kids, could put 45 cents into the vending machine
and get a pack of cigarettes. So times have changed. Well, and also do what times have changed. If you were looking for, again, going back to a zinger to kind of give you a bit of a little caffeine boost or nicotine boost, you can buy nicotine packs that you can just put in your mouth. You can see why you can buy things that are an alternative to that.
which you might consider doing, but the other thing though, this is number 93 out of 100, so not super important to us. Not something to focus on, in our opinion. Now if you smoke,
First of all, you should probably, it's coming up on New Year's New Year, new me. Sorry, she was drinking some Diet Coke when I said that and almost spit it out. And that was almost like that. We need like a salad bar spit guard for our microphones, because sometimes I say funny things. Sometimes I say dumb things. But if you're a smoker, well then stockpile cigarettes and we wish you the best. Here's what you missed from a recent after show if you're not a Patreon.
If you're eating high carbohydrates, you're eating a lot of sugar. And that's where all this chronic diabetes, inflammation, heart disease, all of that comes from ice. Yes, all of it comes out of that. And where does that glucose come out of? It comes out of the food that we're eating.
become a patron and get the after show and thereby make your life more complete for two smackaroonies a month. Well, and this is a great time to consider. As we go into the new year, you're going to start your 2025 with the new years worth of new things. And honestly, as we look at the horizon of prepping, I think with just the cataclysmic change that's going to happen in our world with new world leaders and new world policies,
It's going to take on a new world of prepping and we're kind of excited for what the year has to come for us. Yeah. And one of the key features, I'm glad you brought up this mini topic, one of the key features of a proper mindset, which is the mindset you should have, is that you can adapt to things. We're not stuck in 2012 when the prepping world and the threats and the stuff you needed to do and the technology and all the other stuff was
vastly different. You got to roll with the times and prepping still has a place no matter what the political or economic situation is. But we are the first to say, we need to adapt. We have adapted ourselves. So we're not just like making stuff up.
We're telling you stuff that we're doing. So yeah, consider that. And as we mentioned, or she mentioned a little while ago, another bonus of being a Patreon is you get a Dropbox link that has all 321 episodes of the full show, which is the regular show.
plus the after show. Now, caveat to that, I'm going to look at Patreon membership as of January 1st. So by the time you hear this, it'll be after January 1st. So you may not get it if you sign up after January 1st. Sorry, there has to be a cut off. Yeah. And we've done this in the past with with Patreon gifts and things.
We set up very simple administrative things so we could get a list of who is going to get stuff. And inevitably, there will be people that email me. And I almost don't read my Glentate email address because I get like 100 emails a day. I'm sorry, I just can't do it. This is not our full-time job, by the way. So there's that. And so I would inevitably get people that would say, and I'm quoting verbatim from one,
Dude, I need the Patreon gift. Go ahead and send it to me. No address, you know, some profile name, you know, like...
like Big Daddy 624 or whatever, I'm like, how is this even possible? So we got to have a cut off, become a Patreon, and you'll get the Dropbox link next year. I would like to set the stage, and that's going to be sort of a theme for today's episode is movies. So stage movies, kind of, that's where I'm going with that.
Hollywood is normally a dirty word in our circles, but Hollywood actually put out a decent movie about preppers. Today we're going to take a look at it and discuss the good lessons and the bad lessons in the movie. And we answer the all-important question, is Homestead a good movie to take non-preppers to in order to convince them about prepping?
So the first thing we want to talk about is that this has been the first movie we've seen in eons. That's the word that we used here on our little outline, the word eons. It's been a long time. We've done movie reviews before. I think that one of the last times we did one was Stan. Oh gosh, Stan for freedom.
Sound of freedom. Sound of freedom. I'm like, I knew that's wrong. Also, after death. And so this is the next one that we've seen homestead. What's in common? What do they all have in common? Well, not on common, Glenn. They're all from Angel Studios. Angel Studios, that sounds like kind of a religious thing.
It is. It isn't. They do movies that definitely have a Christian bent to them, but it's not preachy. It's not preachy. It's not. It's not going to church. No, but it has a message and it's worth seeing. And especially with Sound of Freedom and Jim Caviesel being the main actor. That was about the human trafficking thing. By the way, number one box office thing for months and a while. Months. It was supposed to be nothing. The studios.
Not the students, the movie theaters. Yeah, tried to kill it. In fact, there were movie theaters that were not advertising that they were showing it. They had to show it because of some agreement or whatever. And they were trying to prevent people from seeing movies. They were trying to prevent people from buying tickets and popcorn.
at their establishment because they thought that a movie critical of human trafficking was right-wing propaganda. Well, if being critical of human trafficking makes you a right-wing wacko, guilty as freakin' charged. Yeah, and keep on, this was during the height of wokeism and the prior administration and the squelching of free speech. So that sets this stage. So we also did a review of After Death, which is a real scientific look. It's almost a documentary.
Yeah, of people's experience really dying and coming back. And this one is truly, it is fiction. Homestead. Homestead is definitely fiction. This isn't based on a story like the other two were. But we wanted to go see one, like we were just saying, because it's an Angel Studios movie. Why is that important to me? That's important because I'm sick of the Marvel comics. We're sitting there watching 45 minutes of previews going, it's just,
Oh, remake, remake, reboot, whatever they call it. Yeah. Karate Kid's Legends is coming up this May, just so y'all know. Yeah, nursing home legends, because everybody in it is a million years old. So, yeah. So, I mean, one of the last moves we saw was like the top gun, the sequel to that with an aged Tom Cruise.
I mean, we're tired of that. What's really nice about Angel Studios is these are original. These are not remakes. These are somebody's storyline or it's based on true stories. So it's always refreshing and it's nice to get that wholesome.
bent instead of this woke garbage. So that's one of the things that attracted us to watching is one's angel student production. And second, this is about prepping and about a collapse. And what does that look like?
And a third reason we saw the movie, no kidding, is we realized a bunch of you are gonna be wondering, is this a movie you should see? And we wanted to tell you about it, which is an entree to this topic. I hate the term spoiler alert. I hate that term. We're gonna describe the plot of the movie and we're gonna say good things and bad things about it. Overall, by the way, it's a good movie to see. It's worth your time, it's worth your money.
It's also supporting Angel Studios. But I have this thing against people that criticize people. Oh, don't spoil the ending. I'm sorry. How are you supposed to talk about some others? This movie and there are these people and this stuff happened and it's really meaningful, but I can't describe why it's meaningful and impacts your life because I don't want to give away the thing. Well, you can figure out what's going to happen in 99% of proper novels or movies.
So here's our example. As we're driving home from the movie last night, we were kind of talking about, what are we going to talk about in this show as we talk about what we think about this movie. And here- Typical conversation in the Tate Gallagher household. Absolutely. So as we're driving back, I'm like, you know what, here's our example. We haven't watched the final season of Yellowstone, but you know what we do know? Spoiler, John Dutton dies. Yeah. But we're still going to watch the final season of Yellowstone. Right. It's like, if you will not listen to stuff that's
entertaining and informative, like this show. If you're not gonna do that because you're worried about the ending, you're way too fragile. There we go, enough about that. Here's something else before we get into the plot of the movie, because we thought we'd describe the plot, so it would make more sense when we, you know, critiqued it. Funny thing happened when we got to the movie theater. Movie theaters have changed quite a bit since we were there last. We went to one of these, it's an AMC dine-in, so it's not like a typical movie theater.
The seats are plush. I have a comfy chair at home. Glintate falls asleep in all the time. He called the magical chair because when he sits in it, he falls asleep. I go into a coma and I've been in a real coma. And so I know what I'm talking about.
And the seats are unbelievable. They're nicer than first-class airplane seats. I mean... There's recline, I could recline the seat back and I could lift my feet up. It literally was a barcle launcher. It was unbelievable. And there was like a little tray thing that you could slide in front of you. Everything was amazing. The leg room, I'm 6'2", it's kind of a big deal. It was amazing. It was great. And you go in and they have like a full restaurant in there.
It didn't look like they were just microwaving totinos, you know, pizza bits or whatever. None of these things that they served we would eat. But I mean, if you're a normal person and you're not fragile like us, you could eat the stuff. You know what else they had? And this blew me away, a bar, like not just like a cocktail dispensing machine if such a thing exists.
cans of white claw. Yeah, exactly. No. It was actually a bar at which one sat and it had hard drinks and wine and beer. I'm just blown away. So we don't get out often is my point. Clearly. And so, you know, if you can find one of those comfy things, go
at go see a movie at one just to like get like pamper on the times. Yeah. And to get pamper. It could be an old fuddy-duddy like me. And just know when it says movie start, time is, let's just say three forty-five. It's really four thirty.
Yeah. So really quick, before we get into the plot of the movie and start digging in, we want to give a great shout out to all of our great sponsors that keep the lights on over here at Prepping 2.0. You can find all of them at our website, prepping2-0.com. Click on Friends and Affiliates. And over there, you will find survival garden seeds. I just had a conversation. Yes, the gardens must begin soon. Katie Armor, Backwoods, Home Magazine, EMP Shield, boy. Think about EMPs when you watch this movie. Paul Burke, Realtor.
Yeah, you can find him over at Paul Burke, idhomesearch.net as well as ammo square stock up on your ammo now. So the plot of the movie in a nutshell is a nuclear device is detonated in Los Angeles and simultaneously there is a cyber attack on the electrical grid on the east coast.
Those are the basics of it. One of the things that was magnificent about the beginning. And by the way, the cinematography is beautiful. California is a beautiful place, especially the coast of Southern California. It's just full of communists, which is the problem. But it was breathtaking. And one of the best parts of the movie, I know where you said we get into the pluses and minuses, but I'm just jumping right into the pluses.
was there was a narration at the beginning. And it starts off. It's fantastic. It talks about how we have come to value convenience more than survival. And it was the perfect setting for contrasting the comfort and fragility of modern American life with what was to come after the bomb went off. And so it
It sets the tone perfectly. And the thing that I paid attention to the most about that opening narration is probably online somewhere. You can probably get it on the Googles was that this would be the perfect thing for non-preppers to hear. Yeah. And that's going to be the ultimate question at the end of the show. Is this something you should take non-preppers to to try to convince them? Because that's an important question.
the opening narration was amazing. So it is a seaborn nuclear suitcase nuke that's detonated on the water outside of LA, you know, like a mile off the water, which is an important detail because
That means the detonation is at sea level because you're in a boat on the sea. And that presumably means that there was not an EMP effect because an EMP is a nuclear detonation that's high up, that covers a lot of ground below it.
And so there wasn't an EMP effect. And so that might be one thing you were thinking, like, geez, there's no EMP in this movie. How could that be in this setting? How could that be? Well, because it wasn't detonated high altitude. So it's the classic stuff. You've got all these different characters in their comfortable lives. And there's this detonation. And they realize pretty quickly
what's going on and the main characters are preppers they all have go bags and so a bunch of families for the most part intact
All say we're going to the homestead and you're like geez, where's this homestead? Maybe since it's the title of the movie It's probably like the central location in all of this So Shelby they all are taken off pick it up from there the plot so the so things are tense and what's interesting is people are like grabbing their go bags and leaving There's the unknown like what just happened. We can't really
Are there going to be more generations? Is there more? I mean, is this really true? There's also kind of, they're watching this. Is this really true? So there's, in the beginning, there's specifically two families that hit the road and that's known that they're going to the homestead in Colorado. They're going to this place that we don't know where. During this kind of bug out time, we watch how fragile electric cars are.
Oh my gosh. The scene with the Tesla crapping out was unbelievable. They're in the middle of nowhere and it says low battery. And so what do they do? One of the characters, she's a single mom with a couple of kids. Well, she's not a single mom, but she's without her husband. That's right. That's a good point. She's without her husband. More on that in a moment. She just punches a dude in the face and steals his gasoline car. Yeah. So I loved it. And everyone was like, oh my gosh, I can't believe she just did that. I can't believe she wouldn't have died. Exactly. I mean, your kids are going to die because
You know, I mean, and we're not condoning stealing, but we're going to get into this. This is what's going to happen though. This mental preparation stuff is going to be quite the theme throughout the rest of this episode. So what happens is that these, this, so we have two families that for sure we know are going to this homestead. One of them is a biracial couple with three kids. One of them is an older teen.
By the way, there's a thousand names in this movie. I can't keep all the characters names. Yeah, it doesn't matter. So remember the older teen, older teen boy. His name's Abe. Abe. Then there's this family that has like three girls, I believe, a boy and two girls and a dog and they're on their way there too. They get to the homes and that's where you meet the main character. He's the one that owns this place. Unbelievable.
multi-million dollar house. You don't really see much. It's probably a 20 million dollar spread. It's probably 20, 40 acres. It's on top of a hill. There are no homes around it. It has this amazing gate and keep describing the facility. It's described when he starts talking. What's happening is people are calling to this home now and the wife starts answering the phone.
and she's trying to reach, and the phones aren't working super great, blah, blah, blah. So it is understood that they have orchards, wineries, greenhouses. They've made it so that property can be self-sustaining food-wise. They have tons of storage units that have food in them. Yeah. It has the story carries on. There's a medical bay. Yeah. With an ER doctor and a nurse.
So this dude's loaded. This is a lot of, this is, you know, this is a million dollars. This is the type of place where the Uber rich, that, you know, the Bill Gates is in the Zuckerbergs. This is the kind of place that many of you think we live in and we don't. We don't. So this is what we all dream of living in. So they're on their way there. It's a gated community and the couple, the biracial couple, he has been hired to be him and his dudes. He's a special operations guy.
to be the security for this property. And he is on his way there. He's been called to come because things are going south. The balloon has gone up. It's time to go to work. It's time to go. So we have like 30 seconds. We were just now talking. We're just getting into it. That's typical and it's not intentional. So I think that sets the stage though. So when we come back from our break, let's talk about the positives and the negatives that we see. Well, we'll talk about the rest of the plot. Yes, yes. What happens? So folks,
So much more to talk about. Clearly we're going to have a very vibrant after show. So don't go away. We'll be right back. More Prepping 2.0 with authors Glenn Tate and Shelby Gallagher is coming right up. Here all our previous shows free online at Prepping2-0.com.

Now more of prepping 2.0 with authors Glenn Tate and Shelby Gallagher. Thanks for rejoining us folks. We're just getting started with our conversation about the movie Homestead and we will pick it up right where we left off. But first one of the scenes in Homestead skipping ahead a little bit. They're eating freeze dried food.
and as you should and now it wasn't new mana by the way there was a ton of product placement black rifle coffee was like on every seals baseball cap right i mean it was a little kind of overkill
I wish the new manna dudes would have got in on the product placement, because anyway, you'll see, and we'll talk about the chalkboard in a moment, how important it is to have a ton of long-term food. New manna, N-U-M-A-N-N-A. We'll just find a better website. Yeah.
Prepping2-0.com. Tab is called Friends and Affiliates. They got it all. Presed right food, 25 year storage life. It's not backpacking food. It's serious, family, portion kind of stuff. Much of the plot of this movie would have been eliminated had they just bought you Man of Food. Yes, thank you. It would have been a 45 minute movie and everyone would have said the end. People would be walking out like, I'm not even telling my popcorn. Why are we worried? Should not be worried. Not even telling my popcorn.
And I didn't need those 700 extra calories. But anyway, Archive Dive, where we go back and we look at previous episodes because we have so many of them and we cover so doggone many topics, episodes 197 and 199 from August of 2022. We're on solar power.
All kinds of stuff about whole home solar power, about solar power for little devices. And we went through the reality, which is solar power seems pretty easy. I got these little panels on Amazon for $19 and I can power factory. No, you can't.
But anyway, it was interesting nonetheless. So we will resume with the plot description and where we left off was everybody was starting to show up at this
It wasn't even a compound. Compound sounds like it's got like pillboxes and, you know, barbed wire. It's a beautiful estate. And so our special forces of guys come in. They're hired to do security. And it comes very clear that the guy who owns this property, which is the main character, Neil McDonough. We'll call him the patriarch. The patriarch?
Yes. That means the male head of the, well, I wasn't sure if I say the page. And so he's, he has clearly put a ton of money into this and not a whole lot into security and there becomes an angst there. And then pretty soon the droves start coming. The people trying to knock down the gate.
Yeah, and some detail about that. So the families come in a couple stages, and there's a couple scenes where they are a couple days late. It takes them a while to get there, and there's all the joy and adulation when families are reunited.
But the townspeople start coming, and one of the profiles of townspeople was very, very important. And this would be something for non-preppers to see. So there's this family, there's this blue collar guy in his family, perfectly good dude. We find out later that he installs fireplaces.
Which is an honorable job. Yeah, cool dude. And so it's lights out. The electricity is off because of cascading power failures, not because of an EMP. And this guy doesn't have a gun.
So he's in a little suburban house where it's like all these cookie cutter houses. He and his family are rationing gross food. They're locking the doors. And they're hearing gunfire outside. It's right out of 299 days. And so he needs to escort his teenage daughter out of the house because she needs to go to the bathroom and the toilets aren't flushing.
and they have to go out in the woods because I have to go out yeah in the yard or whatever it's dark so he grabs a baseball bat to protect him and his daughter way under armed and I was just like oh my god I was just thinking to myself dude you have to have a gun now we don't know he may be
a convicted felon and can't possess a firearm. So I'm not saying he was like a worthless human being. I'm saying for whatever reason, he did not have a firearm and boy, would it have come in handy because over at his neighbor's house, he hears his neighbor's house being robbed and then there's a loud bam and a flash because his neighbor got shot and he goes, come on kids, get in the truck, we're leaving right now, which was the right thing to do. They go to the palatial compound, the homestead,
And what a fantastic motivational scene to having a firearm. And we'll see this throughout the movie too in other settings, especially when there's like a collapsed situation and stuff has fallen apart.
you and every single responsible adult needs to have a pistol, a sidearm, physically on them at all times because you will see over and over again their times when not having a pistol was a terrible idea and you can carry it with you wherever. And so my message, I'm really speaking to you, dear listener, who maybe doesn't have a gun,
Or maybe you've got like grandpa's duck hunting, 12-gauge. Everybody needs to have a pistol and they need to carry it on them. And the best time to start practicing that and figuring out how it works is right now. Well, and I think that character and it's the chimney guy. Yeah. When you watch this movie, which I recommend you do.
He's the guy that I think it's the normalcy bias. We're going to stay in our home until everything blows over and the refrigerators are dead. Food is starting to rot and they're just huddled up in their home hoping this all blows over. And then he realizes he's got to bug out. And he goes and stands at this patriarch's gate hoping that he can get a favor. And he's told, no, we only have so much.
here, and you know, basically he's not on the list. And he just, it's, it's a gut wrenching moment. And we have had on this show here at Prepping 2.0, time and time again, what are you going to say and do at the gate when you have the pleading family with the crying children starving? You need to have a plan for that. And that's actually the crux of the movie, but I don't want to get too far ahead. What were you going to say?
Yeah, and so there are all kinds of other people that are just camping out at the gate here, and it's heart wrenching. And we'll talk about this in detail, but I'll simply flag the issue here. There will be refugees, and as Shelby said, there will be people at your gate. It is one of the most, maybe next to water, probably the most important thing to think about is how you're gonna handle refugees. Because if you let some in,
There are others are going to want in and a bunch of other stuff. We'll get into that in detail, but it was a terrific reminder of how important it is to have a plan because most people, here's the thing.
Most people watching this movie, most normal people, like people who don't listen to our show, because nobody listening to our show is normal. But most normal people have never thought about hungry families outside the gate of something and wanting to get in to feed their kids. That is a thought that has, I'm not kidding you, never crossed the minds of 95% of the population.
And we have covered that about five different ways sideways. So I just think back to one of the most recent times that we had was when you had Christa Wallach that a little over a year ago on is what are you and we had a very long conversation about that. So back to the plot. So we find out about day to day life on the
the grounds on the homestead. Yeah. And they have, as she mentioned, as she'll be mentioned, um, orchards, greenhouse, they have everything going. They are very sustainable. It's very attractive. Yes. It's suggested that this compound is self sustainable. Make, but go ahead.
Yeah, no, that's what's going on. There's a budding teenage romance between the daughter of the matriarch. And the- Special Forces guy. No, no, the kid. The abe. Well, Abe is the kid of the Special Forces guy. Right, yeah, okay. So there's that. And one of the directions that storyline could have gone but didn't.
is where I thought it was going to go. And that is, I thought that the teenage lovebirds would get everybody killed. And for those of you who have read or listened to 299 days, you know about the story of Joey. And he's a teenage boy who is involved with the good guys. And he's so lovesick with his girlfriend, who happens to be the daughter of a government guy. And
he gets duped by her because his hormones are like on overdrive to give away their position and it almost gets everybody killed. And I think that this is going to be a really big problem in a collapsed situation. Teenage lovebirds are going to endanger people. And it's one of these things where we're
We're raised now in this culture and it's like, oh, you know, teen love is so wonderful and it's great and we should encourage it and everybody should be loved and fulfilled. Not if it gets people killed. You are going to need to control especially teenage boys because they are animals. Having been one, I can attest to this. You need to control teenage boys. And if that means you're not seeing this girl and that's it. Martial law has been declared in this household.
That's how you need to handle it, in my opinion. So we have that. And the teenage boy, oh, that didn't happen in this, by the way. So that was good for them. And actually, that story, that storyline of the teenage kind of crush was actually one of the more meaningful, well, the dialogue. And that was really good. It was really good. Because the dialogue in this movie, as in general, was a lot of just posturing and, you know,
angst and everyone is kind of fighting against each other, but that their little love story, their little crush was actually very poignant. Go ahead. So another important point in the story is there's this
kind of shady executive assistant. He's a young guy. He's like 20-year-old guy. To the patriarch. He's kind of like the administrative assistant to the patriarch. And you get the sense really quickly through cinematography that this guy is a bad guy, this kid. And the kid
lets a zoning official from the nearby town into the compound and takes him straight into the gun room where there's like a hundred guns there. I mean, really cool guns. And that obviously is
a terrible thing. And we find out later, spoiler alert, we find out later that the, the young executive assistant is a bad guy is disloyal. So the zoning guy shows up and talks to the patriarch. Remember I was saying, you need to have a sidearm on you at all times. I'm going to say something very controversial here. The patriarch should have used it in my opinion in the scene. So the zoning guy says,
Oh, yeah, you've got a gathering of more than 30 people. You need to have a permit. I'm going to shut this down and oh, by the way. And you need to inventory everything. All your food and guns you need to give to the city. And so that's straight out of 299 days. It is. It is. And so the matriarch.
should have taken aggressive physical actions, in my opinion, because you cannot tolerate that kind of threat. I'll just leave it at that. But the matriarch was suffering from normalcy bias, which is very interesting. Here, he's so prepared. I'm thinking honest together. Are you saying matriarch or patriarch? The patriarch. Yeah, you were just saying matriarch. The rich dude. The guy, okay. The rich dude has spent, I'm guessing, $10 million on preps alone.
And he doesn't seem to understand. He kind of understands, but he doesn't fully understand that the world has changed. For example, the security guys show up and they're talking to the rich dude. And the security guys say, well, we need a perimeter. We need to dig a trench, basically. And the rich guy says, well, that's for a service land over there. I can't dig on that. I don't have a permit. They'll sue me. And you're like, I don't think court is in session.
So he had some normalcy bias. He didn't want to take physical measures to prevent the zoning guy. The zoning guy left, by the way. We'll talk about that in a moment. Let's get through the plot here really quick, because then we want to talk about some of the positives and the negatives. One of the negatives that is really unrealistic for those of us in the prepping world is that you have not just spent
20 million dollars or a gazillion million dollars on this compound to make it self-sustainable only to be like, well, we got to follow the laws of the local zoning guy. It just is unrealistic, right? Yeah. And it's not realistic, but it illustrates well that that is not the correct approach. So in that sense,
It's a positive, but there are people out there that maybe suffer from this. But so then there's another storyline, the teenage boy who's never done any gun stuff. He went deer hunting once. He's at a guard post because he wants to show off for this girl that he's so infatuated with. And he ends up shooting some hunters. They're totally innocent hunters. I mean, they're trespassing.
and all of that. And it's I think a justified shoot because one of the hunters is scoping out in the sense of pointing his rifle and looking through his scope at their position. And he's ready to shoot. I mean, I don't know if he was ready to shoot, but he was pointing. You don't know that. I mean, and so the kid radios his dad and says, what do I do? And dad says, fire warning shots. So that doesn't work.
And then the kid says, what do I do? And the dad says, shoot him. So the kid shoots him.
So that was traumatic on the kid. That's fair. And I think that's the poignant part, because it was very traumatic to the kid. This is the kid who's also part of this little crush. That scene right there, and that's where the Christianity, that's where the Angel Studios aspect comes in. They have a very poignant scene where she's like, I don't know what to do for you. I can tell you're hurting, and basically, can I pray for you?
And he's like, I don't know. What's prayer? And they just kind of like, she just was a friend to him. And that was the, because that was really developed dialogue, that was probably the best part of me because the rest of the movie dialogue was, you're not coming on my property. Yes, I am. No, I'm not. It was all this kind of grandstanding kind of,
Talk. Not exactly character development. Not a lot of character development, which was really, I think was really missing, but I also see that this is the good side. They're trying to hit, you can tell, the developers of this mirror, trying to hit some major themes, and they were kind of, they did do that, but unfortunately at the cost of dialogue.
Yeah, and I hesitate to say this, but I need to to make this episode complete. Shelby and I are some of the only people who have written a proper fiction series. And in the case of 299 days, there was a Kickstarter campaign to do a pilot for a mini series or potentially a movie.
So we're coming at this from people who have written storylines, have thought a lot about storylines, have thought a lot about realistic scenarios and all that other stuff. So if we seem really critical, we're not being critical in a mean sense. It's still a good movie and you should go see it. But
I think you as the listener are getting the perspective of people who have basically written something similar. Yeah. And struggled with the same problems. And we've spent hours thinking about this. Yeah. Moving a story along, yet not skipping over key the parts. And being realistic and all of that. So let's get to the ending here, because I do want to hit some of the parts. I think before we do the ending, we need to talk about when the SWAT team comes.
Yeah, so I'm at the SWAT team and you got to go to the end because we only have a few more minutes. Oh, I guess all the good stuff will be in the after show. Oh geez. So the zoning guy predictably comes back and he brings the SWAT team from the town and there's a big standoff with the operators.
There's gunfire and one of the unrealistic things in my opinion, you've got I think seven or eight operators who are dug in have belt fed machine guns and are 50 yards from the bad guys and have the the height advantage they're up on a bluff.
And none of the SWAT guys get killed. At least I don't remember seeing that. Maybe they did. They would have absolutely destroyed that SWAT team. But anyway, there's gunfire. Patriarch gets hit. I thought the zoning guy should have been smoked, but that's just me. Because he's really an evil human being. Yeah. Yeah. And he really, anyway. Yeah. So there's this big firefight. And good guy, rich guy, gets shot.
And the wife, his wife, the matriarch, is arguing with him throughout the movie that they should give charity, they should feed all these people. And the patriarch keeps saying, but we don't have enough food. He's got this chalkboard where he's got the number of pounds of different kinds of food and how many calories per pound and how many calories men, women, and children need. And he does all this math and he comes up
with a figure that this absolutely amazing food storage, like connex after connex, like you could not duplicate this in the real world, will last them 32 weeks. This appears to happen in the late summer, early fall. So they can only make it until April. And most of their crops that they're planting will not be viable.
until later. So he's saying we can't let these people in. So when he is in basically a coma for 10 days after getting shot.
when he wakes up from the coma, his wife's in a great mood because she let all the people in and started and gave all the food away. And here's where, okay, so this is the part I don't like. Now, I'm a Christian. I love the Christian message. Anyone who's read 299 days or a great state understands that we wrote our books with a Christian message because it was realistic because God is real.
OK, what I'm about to say is going to sound contradictory. This movie's message of just feed the masses and God will provide. I think is I don't want to say unrealistic because God is in charge of the universe. But I I we don't know if it ended up working and why do we not know that it ends abruptly.
with everybody being happy and they're growing all this time. Because they're all eating food, right? They're all eating food and everybody's happy. And then they say, and this completely floored me. I guess this is the new trend in movies, but I'm old and a foggy and I don't get out much so I didn't know this. So at the end, one of the characters says, hey, scan this QR code.
And you can subscribe to all the other episodes and find out what happens. I'm like, did I just spend two hours and 20 bucks, 10 bucks a piece, to go to this movie to like be left hanging? I mean, really? Now, I guess that's the thing now. And if Angel Studios is making money, I'm all for it. So I'm not.
ripping on it, but it ended in a very weird way. Yeah, and there was a handful of key storylines that didn't get really finished well because of that. And in fairness, they might end well in the series coming up.
And I expect that to happen. I definitely want to see the remaining episodes. Yes, and we will. We will probably subscribe. And it's probably, I don't know, it's not going to cost a lot of money to see the other episodes. And I'm happy. And like you said, I'm happy to support Angel Studios. And I don't feel ripped off. I don't feel like I was hoodwinked. No. But it was odd.
It was odd and it ended on a vaguely happy note. We assume the food will be gone in the middle of the winter. We also assume the United States will not be back to normal anytime soon, which would be another thing I would be interested.
in knowing. So I think that's the plot in a nutshell. Yeah. And what I want to give in a regular show, and we're going to do a deep dive, well, positive lessons that we learned, and we're going to hit on them, and I'm going to add a couple at the end. Sure. Can I hit some of those? Please do.
So, positive lessons, always. And this is the reason why we read and consume prep or fiction. We need to prep. And there's consequences if you don't. Whether it's a good story that you've read or a not-so-good story, you know, whatever. Whether you've read our stories.
You need to prep. We know that. Commonalities that we saw, I love how they talked about how jammed up the highways are. I talk about that really heavily in my books. It's shown really well here. I think the extra added bonus of EV vehicles not being able to go very far.
when you're honestly people and where we live in Montana, people don't use them because everywhere you go, it's two hours away. And it takes hours. It's an overnight to, if not longer, to charge them. And one of the cool things about visually showing.
jammed highways is remember what I was saying about a nuclear not a nuclear bomb I was saying something about oh about refugees and people wanting your food 99.5% of people have never even thought of that in this land of money well in this land of plenty
Most people have never thought about jammed highways. There might be, like, a traffic jam, but, like, you cannot leave the city that has just been nuked. That kind of thing, that's what people need to see, especially people who have never thought about these things. So we only have a couple minutes here left. In the regular show. So I'm going to take a little side here. Two things that I really appreciate about this movie. One, we've talked about the Angel Studios.
don't know that this is the best they put out, but I appreciate them putting out new content that's compelling. The other thing, just like many of the other actors that get involved with Angel Studios, Neil McDonough, he and his wife are executive producers. He's a famous actor. I've watched him for a long time. He has
taken his Christian values and he's taken a hard hit from Hollywood. I just read an article back in 2010, three days into filming the ABC series Scoundrels. He was kicked off of the program for refusing to do a love scene with actress Virginia Mattson, who was just not, she's a hussy. And he's quoted as saying, I won't kiss any other woman because these lips are meant for one woman.
And he took a hit and it was a dark time in his career for doing that. We've heard the same thing about Jim Cavistle. These actors sometimes get blacklisted because they will hold to their Christian values. And God bless him for standing up for those values, continuing his career. He always plays an amazing villain.
It on Yellowstone. Oh my gosh, you did it. The back brothers, oh my goodness. Oh my gosh, so worth it. And you can see a little, Neil Estonia, ask in the opening credits of this movie. Hats off to him that he's able to take his craft and go to Angel Studios. So folks, we're gonna take it into the after show. We have so many more positive struggles. It's gonna be a long after show. Yeah, it's gonna be really good. So encourage you to go check us out over there. And folks, as always, remember from Benjamin Franklin, failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Have a great week.
