Lies I Taught in Medical School By Dr Robert Lufkin

    enSeptember 25, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • The constant evolution of medical knowledgeUp to 50% of medical knowledge becomes outdated within five years, emphasizing the importance of continual reevaluation and staying updated on the latest research.

A significant portion of what is taught in medical school may be outdated or incorrect, and it's essential to continually reexamine our beliefs and update our knowledge. Dr. Robert Lufkin, a guest on Hamada's podcast, wrote a book titled "The Lies I Taught in Med School" to highlight this constant evolution in medicine. He was inspired to write the book after realizing that up to 50% of medical knowledge becomes outdated within five years. Dr. Lufkin's personal journey involved reversing his own health issues by adopting a healthier lifestyle, including intermittent fasting, a more natural diet, and reducing processed foods. He encourages constant reevaluation of our beliefs and the importance of staying updated on the latest medical research.

    • Understanding Metabolic Health and its Connection to Chronic DiseasesPersonal experiences show that addressing metabolic health through lifestyle changes can reverse chronic diseases like gout, high blood pressure, and prediabetes, rather than just treating symptoms with medication.

Many chronic diseases, such as gout, high blood pressure, dyslipidemias, and prediabetes, are interconnected and can be rooted in underlying metabolic health issues. The speaker's personal experience of being diagnosed with these conditions and reversing them through lifestyle changes, including nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management, highlights the importance of addressing the root cause rather than just treating symptoms with medication. The speaker also emphasizes that the knowledge about the connection between these diseases and the importance of metabolic health has always been there but was not emphasized during medical education. The prevalence of these chronic diseases in America is alarming, with over 88% of adults having at least one symptom of metabolic dysfunction. While medications may offer temporary relief, the speaker believes that managing these conditions through lifestyle changes can lead to long-term reversal and optimal health.

    • Healthcare professionals need interdisciplinary collaboration for a holistic understanding of patients' conditionsRadiologists and clinicians emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in healthcare. Radiologists can identify signs of metabolic diseases, and clinicians can provide effective and comprehensive care by recognizing interconnected health conditions.

In healthcare, it's essential for professionals from different specializations to collaborate and share knowledge to gain a holistic understanding of patients' conditions. This was emphasized in a conversation between a clinician and a radiologist. The clinician shared an instance where a diabetic patient was advised to increase carbohydrate intake while already dealing with insulin issues. The radiologist, who often faces similar dismissive attitudes towards radiologists, acknowledged the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. They both agreed that staying in silos limits understanding of the bigger picture. Radiologists, for instance, can identify signs of metabolic diseases like fatty livers and calcification in coronary arteries, which could help in early diagnosis and intervention. Renal specialists like Jason Fung have also made significant strides in understanding the connection between diabetes and renal failure. By recognizing the interconnectedness of various health conditions and working together, healthcare professionals can provide more effective and comprehensive care.

    • Ketogenic diet shows promise in treating neurological conditionsThe ketogenic diet, which puts the body into a state of ketosis where it burns fat for energy, is showing positive results in treating neurological conditions like Alzheimer's and psychiatric disorders. Older adults may also benefit from addressing insulin resistance for improved brain health.

A ketogenic diet, an eating plan that limits carbohydrates and increases healthy fats, is showing promising results in treating various neurological conditions, including Alzheimer's and psychiatric disorders. This diet puts the body into a metabolic state called ketosis, where it burns fat for energy instead of glucose. For some patients, this shift has led to significant improvements, such as better recognition of loved ones and even the ability to go off medications and return to work. Researchers are also discovering that metabolic strategies may be effective in treating seemingly unrelated diseases. Additionally, a study of non-diabetic adults revealed that older adults have higher average HA1c levels, a marker of blood glucose damage, indicating that insulin resistance may be a common issue for many as we age. Overall, these findings suggest that paying attention to our metabolic health could have far-reaching benefits for our brain health and overall well-being.

    • Managing Type 2 Diabetes: Lifestyle Interventions for AllTiming of meals, particularly limiting eating window, can help reduce inflammation and promote gut health, benefiting both those with Type 2 Diabetes and overall health.

The dietary recommendations for managing type 2 diabetes have potential benefits for everyone, not just those diagnosed with the condition. These lifestyle changes, often referred to as "lifestyle interventions," can include simple modifications like adjusting meal timing and frequency. While the concept of "lifestyle change" can be vague, it's essential to understand that eating right is a crucial component. The challenge lies in determining what constitutes a healthy diet. Many of us, even those who are seemingly healthy, are on the path to developing type 2 diabetes. One practical step to improve overall health is to consider the timing of meals. Instead of snacking throughout the day and eating late into the evening, limiting the eating window to a specific timeframe, such as one meal a day (OMAD), can help reduce inflammation and promote gut health. This approach may seem counterintuitive to popular advice, but it can lead to significant health improvements.

    • The origins of breakfast and health food promotions may be rooted in religious beliefsHistorically, breakfast promotion and health food choices were influenced by religious motivations, shaping modern dietary recommendations.

The belief in breakfast being the most important meal of the day and the promotion of certain food choices based on health, may have originated from religious motivations rather than scientific evidence. This historical context was shared during a conversation about intermittent fasting and its benefits. The discussion revealed that the founder of Kellogg's Cereal, John Kellogg, was influenced by his religious beliefs when promoting cereals as a healthier alternative to eggs and animal products. This promotion was based on the belief that these food choices could help suppress base instincts, including sexuality. The American Dietetic Association, an influential organization in setting dietary recommendations, was initially founded on these principles. While the organization has evolved, it's important to be aware of the historical context and potential biases in dietary recommendations.

    • Holistic approach to patient careEmphasize nutrition science, use health coaches, limit pharma interactions, prioritize individualized care, and teach collaboration in healthcare education and practice

The healthcare system could benefit significantly from a more holistic approach to patient care, which includes a stronger emphasis on nutrition science, the use of health coaches, and limiting interactions with pharmaceutical companies. The speaker also expressed concern about the loss of individualized patient-doctor relationships due to protocol-driven and guideline-driven care, and the rise of AI in medicine. If the speaker were to run a medical school, they would prioritize teaching these aspects, as well as physical therapy and the importance of working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals. They also acknowledged the potential benefits and drawbacks of AI in medicine. Overall, the speaker advocated for a more comprehensive and team-oriented approach to healthcare education and practice.

    • Revolutionizing Publishing and Medicine with AIAI in publishing identifies trends and patterns, enhancing book content. In medicine, it allows doctors to consider full patient histories for comprehensive diagnoses and treatments.

The use of AI in various industries, including publishing and medicine, is set to revolutionize the way we approach information and diagnosis. Before the advent of advanced AI like ChatGPT-4, the publishing industry was already seeing changes in how books were written and consumed. The technology allows for the processing of large amounts of data, which can help identify trends and patterns that might not be immediately apparent to humans. In medicine, AI could potentially allow doctors to look at a patient's entire medical history, rather than just the most recent data, leading to more comprehensive diagnoses and treatments. Robert's upcoming book is aimed at regular people and not just medical professionals. It not only provides information but also motivates readers to make lifestyle changes that can help prevent or manage various diseases. The book covers topics such as nutrition, sleep, exercise, and stress management. While some may argue that the human touch is essential in medicine, the use of AI can help doctors make more informed decisions and provide better care to their patients. The use of AI in publishing and medicine is just the beginning, and its potential applications are vast. It's essential to adapt to these changes and understand how they can benefit us in our daily lives.

    • Maintaining good health through diet: Avoid processed foods and focus on whole, nutrient-dense foodsAvoid junk food, specifically high carb, high sugar, refined carbs, and seed oils. Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods and be patient with the process for improved health.

The key to maintaining good health through diet involves avoiding junk food, specifically high carbohydrate, high sugar, refined carbs, and seed oils. The speaker, Robert, shares his personal experience with various diets, including veganism and carnivorism, and emphasizes that the healthiest approach is to eliminate processed foods and focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods. He also advises avoiding grains due to potential inflammation, leaky gut, and exposure to herbicides. It's important to note that the effects of eliminating grains and seed oils may take longer to notice compared to cutting out sugar and carbs. The speaker encourages listeners to be patient and persistent in their efforts to improve their diet for better health. If he were on his deathbed, Robert would advise his family to prioritize their health by focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods and avoiding processed junk food. He would remind them that the key to longevity and vitality is a healthy diet and lifestyle.

    • Discovering Your Purpose for Optimal Health and WellnessFinding a purpose in life is crucial for overall health and wellness, and self-discovery is essential to identify a fulfilling purpose that resonates with you.

Key takeaway from our conversation with Dr. Robert Lufkin is that finding a purpose in life is essential for optimal health and wellness. According to Dr. Lufkin, living a fulfilling life that makes a difference in the world is more valuable than looking forward to vacations or retirement. He emphasizes the importance of self-discovery and finding a purpose that resonates with you. Dr. Lufkin's book and audiobook offer guidance on this journey, helping readers navigate the noise and focus on their health and well-being. We appreciate Dr. Lufkin's insights and hope to have him back on the show soon to discuss specific health conditions or other topics. Thank you, Ahmed, for hosting this conversation, and thank you to all our listeners for tuning in. Stay healthy and keep exploring your purpose!

ABOUT THIS CONVERSATION: Dr Kirk Moore MD is the kind of plastic surgeon I have never met before. Kirk is a 59-year old Utah physician now facing 15 years in prison for simply doing what his patients asked and even more importantly abiding by The Hippocratic Oath that requires that doctors “First Do No Harm”. The exact wording of the oath is "I will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm". With every passing day, it becomes clearer and clearer that the COVID-19 vaccines were experimental and too often increased unnecessary medical risks in return for dubious protections. The government’s failure to conduct thorough testing on COVID-19 vaccines, and the near complete censorship of opposing views, limited the ability of anyone to exercise informed consent fully. This violates basic ethics by denying individuals the opportunity to make decisions about their health based on complete information regarding potential risks and benefits. Kirk's actions were upholding the ethical doctrines of “informed consent” and “do no harm” to anyone who felt that they did not have all the information, wanted more information, or simply did not trust the information being provided by the ‘experts’ and they chose to not be forced to receive one. At no point did Kirk charge for any of these consultations or services. The US Government now seeks to imprison this single father for doing nothing more than what his patients asked for. The government, in its case, fakes concern over the destruction of actual vaccines. It’s almost laughable considering millions of vials are being destroyed worldwide by governments. Please support Kirk's legal fund, link below. You can read more about this case on my substack. Sign up today. I hope you enjoy the episode. Much love Ahmad x Links Danielle

ABOUT THIS CONVERSATION: Danielle Hervé is the founder of VIBJSY, which was set up to support vaccine-injured people locally on the island of Jersey, one of the Channel Islands. Danni has been advocating for the injured, aiming to help remove barriers to healthcare and raise awareness that Jersey has had no access to any vaccine damage payment scheme until very recently. Danni is a spiritually awake, vocal and unafraid mother who lost her 65-year-old beloved father suddenly following the Pfizer “vaccine” and is determined to fight for the truth. In the 2nd part of the podcast, Poppy Bazell, a registered nurse for the last 9 years, shares her experiences and insights on speaking out against vaccine mandates and questioning the mainstream COVID narrative Poppy also discusses her real passion for holistic healing. Over the last 2 years, she has been studying hard to create a nursing role that focuses on treating the 'whole' person- mind, body and soul. ABOUT THIS CONVERSATION: Elizabeth Hart is from Adelaide, South Australia, and has been investigating vaccination policy for 15 years, starting with pet vaccination after one of her dogs was put down in 2008 due to a vaccine complication. Elizabeth subsequently discovered gross over-vaccination of pets, a problem which was taken up by consumer advocate Choice magazine in 2010. Elizabeth is now investigating the over-vaccination of humans with ever-increasing taxpayer-funded 'womb to tomb' vaccination schedules, reaching a crescendo with the insane situation of people being pressed to have COVID-19 vaccine products every few months. Elizabeth is an independent researcher campaigning for the medical profession to fulfil its legal and ethical duty to properly inform people about vaccination, and obtain valid voluntary informed consent for this medical intervention. This is coming to the fore with the grossly disproportionate and ill-targeted Covid response, see for example Elizabeth's BMJ rapid response published in March 2020 - https://www.bmj.com/content/368/bmj.m1089/rr-6 In this conversation with Elizabeth, I talk about her journey from a pet owner who never questioned vaccines of any sort to the campaigner she is today. In particular, we discuss mandatory vaccinations and the lack of informed consent. Elizabeth also exposes the blatant and horrendous conflicts of interest that exist. Much love Ahmad x Links

FREEDOM - LIBERTY - HAPPINESS SUPPORT DOC MALIK To make sure you don't miss any episodes please subscribe to either:

ABOUT THIS CONVERSATION: Roman is the co-author of Dissolving Illusions. Not too long ago, lethal infections were feared in the Western world. Since then, many countries have transformed from disease cesspools to much safer, healthier habitats. Starting in the mid-1800s, there was a steady drop in deaths from all infectious diseases, decreasing to relatively minor levels by the early 1900s. The history of that transformation involves famine, poverty, filth, lost cures, eugenicist doctrine, individual freedoms versus state might, protests and arrests over vaccine refusal, and much more. Today, we are told that medical interventions increased our lifespan and single-handedly prevented masses of deaths. But is this true? Dissolving Illusions details facts and figures from long-overlooked medical journals, books, newspapers, and other sources. Using myth-shattering graphs, this book shows that vaccines, antibiotics, and other medical interventions are not responsible for the increase in lifespan and the decline in mortality from infectious diseases. If the medical profession could systematically misinterpret and ignore key historical information, the question must be asked, "What else is ignored and misinterpreted today? I hope you enjoy the episode. Much love Ahmad x Links

Scientists now call Alzheimer’s disease “Type 3 diabetes.” What’s the link between Alzheimer’s and diabetes? Well, new research shows insulin resistance, or what I call diabesity (from eating too many carbs and sugar and not enough fat), is one of the major factors that starts the brain-damage cascade that robs the memory of millions of people.

In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I discuss the link between insulin resistance and memory loss and the top strategies I use with my patients to reverse or prevent dementia.

How To Treat High Blood Pressure And What Causes It?

How To Treat High Blood Pressure And What Causes It?

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, AG1, Beekeepers, and Super Simple Grassfed Protein

Blood pressure is one of the key markers of metabolic health, yet high blood pressure is very common—and the numbers are growing. Moreover, 93 percent of Americans are metabolically unhealthy. In fact, high blood pressure is often called a silent killer as it can lead to conditions such as heart disease, kidney failure, and stroke, and many people don’t even know they have it.

In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. George Papanicolaou and Dr. Cindy Geyer about the seriousness of high blood pressure, the misconceptions around salt intake and blood pressure, what foods and supplements support healthy blood pressure, and overall metabolic health.

Dr. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is board certified in family medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency, he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for four years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility, where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health, a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

Dr. Cindy Geyer received her bachelor of science and her doctor of medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine, and lifestyle medicine. She joined The Ultrawellness Center in 2021 after practicing and serving as the medical director at Canyon Ranch for 23 years.

#396 A Brand New Way to Understand and Treat Mental Health Problems with Dr Chris Palmer

#396 A Brand New Way to Understand and Treat Mental Health Problems with Dr Chris Palmer

My guest today has spent his entire career, trying to understand mental illness.  What’s really causing it – and how can we better manage it.

Dr Chris Palmer is Director of the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at McLean Hospital, Massachusetts and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

In today’s episode, he shares some of the profound insights he's gained over almost 30 years as an academic psychiatrist. He combines years of clinical, neuroscience and metabolic studies into one unifying idea: that mental disorders are not caused by a chemical imbalance. Instead, they are metabolic disorders of the brain, caused by dysfunction in our mitochondria.

It’s a theory that connects physical, mental and emotional health, and it’s the topic of his excellent new book, Brain Energy. Chris doesn’t deny the roles trauma, psychological and social factors can play in poor mental health. But he explains the link between these factors and our metabolism, and how diet and lifestyle interventions can help. Excitingly, Chris explains that making changes to our diet and lifestyle actually offer far more hope for long-term remission than existing treatments, which generally aim to only reduce symptoms.

As Chris reveals, his own experience with trauma and mental illness is what drives him to try and help millions of people around the world who are still suffering. Chris is advocating for a transformation in the way we view and treat mental health. And, if that happens, it won’t just help ease an epidemic of depression, anxiety and other conditions – it also has the potential to address all of the chronic diseases that are underpinned by metabolic dysfunction.

Chris is knowledgeable, passionate and articulate. I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with him and I hope you enjoy listening.
