She might wear her boyfriend's jersey, but it's likely to be a button-up, worn under other clothes. The discussion also touched upon the topic of athletes' jerseys and how they fit, with football jerseys being considered the most appealing. The conversation then shifted to sharing clothes and age differences in relationships, with Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner being mentioned as an example. Though she clarified they weren't engaged at the time, the man made a comment assuming she was taken. This led to feelings of insecurity and self-consciousness for the woman, who later realized she was aging and felt envious of her partner's physical appearance. The conversation then shifted to discussing compliments and how to give meaningful ones, particularly to men. The woman acknowledged that men don't receive enough sincere compliments and that they can be hesitant to accept them. • Documenting charity acts online can be perceived as insensitive and entitledFocus on the act of kindness itself, rather than seeking validation or recognition, when helping others.

Documenting and sharing acts of charity online can come across as insensitive and entitled, regardless of the giver's intentions. The discussion revolved around a TikTok video where a content creator, Bethany, was criticized for filming herself donating items to TJ Maxx employees. Some perceived it as a way to gain praise and recognition, which can undermine the value of doing good deeds. The speakers also shared personal experiences where volunteering or helping others didn't require public acknowledgement. They emphasized that the focus should be on the act itself rather than the recognition. Additionally, the speakers questioned Bethany's motivations for filming and sharing the video, suggesting that she might be using the "no press is bad press" approach to generate more attention. Overall, the consensus was that acts of kindness should be kept private and not used as a means to seek validation or recognition.

He acknowledges that he's neglected this aspect of his life and is now ready to explore the possibility of starting a relationship. The artist also shares that he feels pressure from his married country music friends and their families, and that the country music community's investment in artists' personal lives adds to this feeling. He expresses a desire for companionship and the shared experiences that come with it, having missed out on such experiences in the past year.

    • Discovering new artists and connecting with fans at music festivalsMusic festivals offer opportunities to discover new artists, connect with like-minded people, and feel a deep connection to the genre and its performers, making country music a beloved and relatable genre.

Music festivals provide unique experiences where individuals can connect with like-minded people and discover new artists. For the speaker, a festival led him to discover Zac Brown, who became a favorite artist and introduced him to the country genre. Country music artists, such as Alan Jackson and George Strait, were his childhood obsessions, but it was a live performance at a festival that made him feel connected to the artists as people, not just stars. Country music's relatability and focus on roots make it a genre that resonates deeply with fans. The speaker acknowledges that there may be an element of acting or mystery in the genre, but the strong connection to the audience is a defining characteristic. Country music's popularity has historically been centered around the United States and Canada, but with the rise of streaming, it's reaching new audiences in countries like Australia, Mexico, Brazil, and beyond.

    • Artist's Connection and New DiscoveriesThrough touring in North America and embracing vulnerability, artists can reach fans and grow. Streaming services expand their audience. Pandemics can force introspection, leading to new discoveries and a renewed appreciation for simple pleasures.

The artist's connection with their fans through extensive touring in North America has been crucial to their career, but the advent of streaming services has opened new doors for reaching a global audience. The artist is proud of their vulnerability and openness in their new album, reflecting on their personal growth and the challenges of maintaining a long-distance relationship. The pandemic forced them to confront these issues and consider committing to a normal life with someone, leading to new discoveries and a renewed appreciation for the simple pleasures of daily life. The biggest challenge for someone living with the artist might be keeping up with their constant energy and desire to tackle new projects, as they have grown accustomed to a fast-paced, go-getter lifestyle.

    • Navigating Relationship Challenges During the PandemicThe pandemic has made it harder to maintain connections with friends, particularly during challenging times like divorce. Cherish moments and find resilience to overcome adversity.

The pandemic has brought about unexpected challenges for people in various aspects of their lives, including their relationships. For the speaker, he misses the camaraderie and spontaneity of going out to eat and discovering new restaurants with his friends, which has become more difficult as they've grown older and some have gone through divorces. He also laments the loss of connection with his friends, particularly those who are going through divorces, and feels that the pandemic has highlighted the changes in their relationships. Despite the struggles, the speaker remains hopeful that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that people can find renewed strength and connection once they've made it through difficult times. Overall, the discussion underscores the importance of cherishing the moments and connections we have in life and the resilience we can find in the face of adversity.

    • Fears and Complexities of Modern DatingIntroverts may fear public and social media scrutiny in dating, emphasizing the importance of in-person connections and avoiding misconceptions. Preference for big personalities and finding complementary partners are also key considerations.

While some people enjoy the excitement and conversation of getting to know someone new, others, especially introverts, may fear the potential gossip and scrutiny that comes with dating in public or social media spheres. The interviewee shares his personal experiences with this fear and how it has impacted his dating life. He emphasizes the importance of getting to know someone in person rather than just through social media and the potential for misconceptions. The interviewee also shares his preference for big personalities in a partner and the importance of finding someone who complements him well. Overall, the discussion highlights the complexities and nuances of dating in today's world and the importance of authentic connections.

    • The importance of a partner who can engage in social situationsFinding a partner who can hold their own in social settings and engage in meaningful conversations is crucial for personal growth and confidence.

Having a partner who can hold their own in social situations and engage in meaningful conversations is important for personal growth and confidence. This was emphasized through the speaker's experiences of bringing plus ones to events and feeling uncomfortable when they couldn't keep up. The speaker also discussed the importance of understanding and receiving love in various ways, such as words of affirmation and acts of service. Additionally, the speaker shared that they have learned to appreciate receiving love as much as giving it, and that this realization has deepened their relationships. Overall, the conversation highlighted the importance of finding a partner who can support and complement us in various aspects of life.

    • Friendships and authentic relationshipsTrusting friends' judgement and authenticity in relationships is key. Persistence in unrequited love may not always lead to success.

Hosting events with friends and letting relationships develop naturally seems to work better for the speaker than being set up on dates. He prefers the company of his friends and dislikes the idea of an audience watching him. He's learned to trust his friends' judgement and pay attention to their feedback. The speaker shares an experience of persistently pursuing someone who wasn't interested, which eventually led him to move on. Recently, he's noticed an increase in DMs from past connections with the release of new music. Overall, the speaker is a work in progress and values honesty and authenticity in relationships.

    • Difficult decisions and heartbreakFollowing dreams may lead to heartbreak, but staying open to new experiences and allowing relationships to develop naturally can lead to growth and deeper connections.

Sometimes making difficult decisions between following your dreams and maintaining a relationship can lead to heartbreak. The speaker shared a personal story about giving up his dream of becoming a doctor to pursue music, which ultimately led to the end of a long-term relationship. He found solace in music, particularly in John Mayer's album "Continuum," during his heartbreak. Now, at 38, he feels like he's still searching for something, but isn't sure if it's a romantic partner or a clearer sense of direction in life. He reflects on the importance of being open to new experiences and allowing relationships to develop naturally. The speaker also mentioned how his past experiences influenced his songwriting and music appreciation, making him relate deeply to songs that express feelings of longing and self-discovery.

The artist, Dustin Lynch, is grappling with the decision of whether or not to have children, expressing feelings of self-consciousness and uncertainty about the potential sacrifice of personal time and freedom. This decision, he acknowledges, can significantly impact his dating life. The artist also reflects on the value of stability and personal growth, noting how his career success has influenced his perspective on relationships and potential partnership. Ultimately, the artist expresses a desire for companionship and a shared experience of life's ups and downs. The conversation highlights the complexities and personal nature of the decision to have children, as well as the potential impact on one's personal and professional life.

    • Handling Negative Feedback and Finding InspirationArtists must learn to handle negative feedback and focus on creating new music. Inspiration can come from personal experiences and supportive friends. A significant career milestone can validate passion and allow global representation.

Creating and releasing music is a rollercoaster ride full of ups and downs. Artists face both praise and criticism, and it's essential to learn how to handle the negative feedback. For the speaker, he's learned to let it roll off his shoulders and focus on creating new music. Inspiration can come from living experiences and being around friends. One of the coolest moments in his career was being invited to join the Grand Ole Opry, an institution with a rich history in country music. Being a part of this prestigious family validated his passion for country music and allowed him to represent it on a global scale. Despite the challenges, the joy of creating and performing music keeps him going.

    • Managing Unwanted Subscriptions and Inappropriate BehaviorIdentify and cancel unused subscriptions with Rocket Money, set boundaries in relationships, communicate clearly, and invest in convenient tools like Quip for oral health.

It's important to be mindful of the subscriptions and apps we use and pay for, as many of us may be unknowingly wasting money on unwanted services. Rocket Money is a helpful tool that can identify and cancel unused subscriptions, negotiate lower bills, and manage finances all in one place. Another key takeaway is the importance of setting boundaries and addressing inappropriate behavior when it arises, especially in relationships. In the shared discussion, a woman named Anna sought advice on how to address her brother-in-law's inappropriate text messages and sexist comments towards her. It's important to communicate clearly and set boundaries when such behavior occurs, and to not engage in conversations that make us uncomfortable. In terms of relationships, we all learn through our mistakes and experiences, and it's important to remember that everyone is on their own unique journey. Lastly, investing in tools like Quip for oral health can save money and time in the long run, and make maintaining good oral hygiene easier and more convenient.

    • Setting Boundaries in Relationships: Addressing Unwelcome BehaviorCommunicate clearly and set boundaries to address unwelcome or disrespectful behavior. Challenge and speak out against sexist attitudes and assumptions.

The texts exchanged between the speaker and her brother-in-law crossed a line from friendly banter to inappropriate and sexist comments. The brother-in-law's behavior, including making assumptions about women's roles and making comments on the speaker's appearance, made her uncomfortable. Despite her discomfort, she initially tried to ignore it, but eventually, she reached her breaking point and shared her concerns with her mother. Her mother advised her to ignore it, but the speaker felt that it was important to address the issue directly with her brother-in-law. The situation highlights the importance of clear communication and setting boundaries in relationships, especially when it comes to unwelcome or disrespectful behavior. It also underscores the importance of challenging and speaking out against sexist attitudes and assumptions.

    • Setting boundaries in relationships and effective communicationClear communication and setting boundaries are crucial for healthy relationships. However, complex situations involving family dynamics can make it challenging to establish and maintain these boundaries.

Effective communication and setting boundaries are essential in maintaining healthy relationships. The speaker in this conversation expressed feeling disrespected due to frequent and inappropriate text messages from an acquaintance. They attempted to establish boundaries by asking him not to text during work hours and not to send comments as texts. However, these boundaries were repeatedly broken, leading to feelings of frustration and unease. The complexity of the situation arises from the speaker's connection to the acquaintance through their sister. The speaker questioned whether involving their sister would be helpful or defensive. They also shared that their sister doesn't text and prefers longer conversations over the phone. The conversation also touched upon the possibility of blocking the acquaintance as a solution. The speaker shared that they had tried this before but received a high volume of texts when they didn't respond. They acknowledged that blocking might lead to awkwardness in person but weren't sure if the acquaintance would disclose being blocked to their family. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of clear communication and setting boundaries, even in complex situations involving family dynamics. It also underscores the potential challenges and consequences of implementing solutions like blocking.

    • Setting boundaries with your sister's husbandExpress discomfort to your sister, not blaming her or her husband, and ask for her help to address unwanted behavior from her husband.

If you're feeling uncomfortable with unwanted messages from your sister's husband, try not engaging with him first by not responding to his messages. This could help him understand that his behavior is not acceptable. If the situation doesn't improve, consider discussing it with your sister in a non-confrontational way, making it clear that you're not blaming her or her husband but expressing your discomfort. It's important to remember that you're not at fault for the situation and that you have the right to set boundaries for your own well-being. The conversation with your sister could involve asking her to address her husband's behavior and creating a solution together. Additionally, waiting a few weeks before bringing it up to your sister could give the situation a chance to resolve itself without involving her unnecessarily.

    • Consider waiting before responding to family conflictsGive family conflicts time to resolve themselves or communicate calmly and objectively when necessary.

If you're in a situation where you're unsure about responding to someone due to potential family conflict, consider giving it some time before making a decision. If the issue isn't urgent and causing significant distress, it may be best to let it resolve itself. However, if you feel the need to communicate your concerns to a family member, do so in a calm and objective manner. It's important to remember that you've done nothing wrong and have handled the situation with good intentions. If the issue arises in conversation, be honest about your reasons for not responding while keeping the focus on the facts rather than the drama. With time, the situation may improve, and normal communication may be restored.

    • Maintaining peace in family and balancing concert setlistsDustin values family harmony and professionalism in music, striving to keep the peace and provide a mix of old and new songs for audiences.

It's important to approach family matters in a calm and peaceful manner, even if it means putting up with unwanted behavior for a while. The speaker values their role as a peacemaker within their family and would rather maintain that reputation than become the dramatic one. In regards to their personal life, Dustin shared that the balance between playing new music and hits during concerts can be challenging, but necessary. He also expressed admiration for Keith Urban's professionalism and focus during their tour together. The writing process for Dustin's album took varying amounts of time, with some songs coming together quickly and others taking longer. He also noted how technology and recording methods have evolved in Nashville.

    • Exploring the Songwriting Process and Nashville RoundsThe unpredictable process of songwriting involves melody, lyrics, and collaboration. Nashville rounds offer a platform for learning and growth, while the road to success requires dedication and adaptability.

The process of songwriting can be unpredictable and collaborative, with the melody often serving as the foundation. For some writers, a catchy title can inspire the song, while for others, the melody comes first and the lyrics follow. Songwriting rounds in Nashville are an essential part of the community, providing a platform for both established and emerging artists to share their craft and learn from each other. These rounds can be nerve-wracking for some, but they offer a unique opportunity to connect with fellow musicians and fans in an intimate setting. The road to becoming a successful songwriter is challenging, with many writers starting off by working on a publisher's "draw," but the rewards can be great, both personally and professionally. Ultimately, the key to successful songwriting is a combination of talent, dedication, and a willingness to learn and adapt.

    • Building strong relationships in the industryInvest time and energy into networking and socializing to build strong relationships, leading to valuable collaborations and opportunities.

Building a successful creative career involves investing time and energy into building strong relationships with like-minded individuals. This can be achieved through constant networking and socializing in the industry. These relationships can lead to valuable collaborations and opportunities, and the trust and understanding built over time can result in efficient and effective creative processes. The speaker, Dustin, emphasizes the importance of being open to new experiences and meeting new people, even if it feels uncomfortable or anxious. He also mentions the role of shared experiences and growing up together in forming strong bonds. Additionally, Dustin shares a personal anecdote about finding inspiration in unexpected places, such as a Taylor Swift bracelet, and the importance of staying true to oneself and one's creative vision. Overall, the key takeaway is that building a successful creative career requires a combination of hard work, dedication, and the ability to form meaningful connections with others in the industry.

    • Embrace opportunities and be open to new experiencesSaying 'yes' to new experiences and connections can lead to growth and potential benefits, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone or dealing with financial concerns.

Being open and saying "yes" more can lead to new experiences and potential connections. The speaker shared his own experiences of hesitation and reluctance, especially during his dating years, but emphasized the importance of giving things a chance when you feel a connection. He also mentioned the increasing costs of everyday items, like a $26 Taco Bell order, and how inflation can make it easier to become closed off to new experiences due to financial concerns. However, he encouraged listeners to push past their hesitations and make an effort to get to know people over time, as it can take a while to truly understand someone. Overall, the message is to embrace opportunities and be open to new experiences, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone.

The Science of Building Better Relationships | Marissa King

The Science of Building Better Relationships | Marissa King
The idea of networking can be fraught. For some people, it might, at times, seem either icky or pathetic to deliberately try to make friends, either in a personal or professional context -- especially since so many of us may be feeling a bit socially awkward anyway, after months of Covid restrictions. However, my guest today will argue that there are profound health benefits to building positive relationships, and she has advice about how to actually do it, based on neuroscience and psychology. Marissa King is a Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Yale School of Management, where she studies social networks, social influence, and team dynamics. She is also the author of a recently-released book, called Social Chemistry: Decoding the Patterns of Human Connection. In this conversation, we talk about: how your social networks impact your mental health; how, when it comes to social networks, quality and structure are more important than quantity; why you’re not as bad at being social as you may think; the importance of humor; how status and privilege play into networking; the benefits of calling up old friends you haven’t spoken to in a while; and she will ask you to consider whether you are a convener, a broker, or an expansionist. This is actually part two of a two-part series that we're running this week about the hard science and soft skills of social connection. If you missed it on Monday, we had an amazing interview with a researcher named Barbara Fredrickson from UNC Chapel Hill. She has a lot of fascinating things to say about what love actually is and takes a pretty broad view of the concept of love. You don't have to listen to that in order to understand this episode, but I think they work great in concert.  One more item of business, and it is an invitation for you to participate in this show. In June, we’ll be launching a special series of podcast episodes focusing on anxiety, something I’m sure we’re all too familiar with. In this series, you’ll learn the mechanics of anxiety: how and why it shows up and what you may be doing to feed it.  And this is where you come in. We’d love to hear from you with your questions about anxiety that experts will answer during our anxiety series on the podcast. So whether you’re struggling with social anxiety, anxiety about re-entering the world post-Covid, or have any other questions about anxiety - we want to hear from you. To submit a question or share a reflection call (646) 883-8326 and leave us a voicemail. If you’re outside the United States, you can email us a voice memo file in mp3 format to listener@tenpercent.com. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, May 12th.  And if you don't already have the Ten Percent Happier app, you can download it for free wherever you get your apps or by clicking here: https://www.tenpercent.com/?_branch_match_id=888540266380716858.
