E640 Ask Nick - Everyone Caught Feelings During Threesome

    enSeptember 18, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Exploring Opportunities: Employment, Education, and Clear CommunicationThe PSSI team offers employment opportunities with benefits and training. High school seniors can secure scholarships and financial aid through FAFSA. Clear communication prevents vacation disappointments and unexpected discoveries.

Opportunities for employment and education are available for those who seek them. The PSSI team is looking for motivated individuals to join their food safety team with competitive pay, benefits, and training. Meanwhile, high school seniors can apply for scholarships and financial aid by filling out the FAFSA, regardless of academic achievements. On a lighter note, planning vacations carefully can prevent unexpected disappointments, as a recent travel experience involving a miscommunication about a restaurant reservation illustrates. Lastly, a seemingly flirtatious encounter with a married doctor at a Speakeasy resulted in an unexpected discovery, highlighting the importance of clear communication and understanding in all situations.

    • Navigating family dynamics during pregnancyCommunicate openly with your partner and families about needs and expectations to find a solution that works for everyone during pregnancy

Communication and consideration are key in navigating the complexities of family dynamics during pregnancy. In the discussed situation, a pregnant woman's desire for her mother to stay with her for emotional support during the last months of her pregnancy clashed with her partner's wishes for his mother to come earlier for his own emotional support. The woman expressed concerns about the discomfort and inconvenience of having her mother-in-law in the nursery and the added responsibility of caring for her. Ultimately, it was suggested that the best approach would be for both partners to prioritize their girlfriend's needs and communicate openly with each other and their families about their concerns and expectations. The woman's friend advised the boyfriend to check in with his girlfriend's needs and consider the unique challenges and stressors she was experiencing during pregnancy. By prioritizing open communication and understanding, the couple could find a solution that worked for everyone involved.

    • Supporting a pregnant woman's mental well-beingEnsure a peaceful environment for the expecting mother, prioritize her comfort and well-being, and respect her boundaries during pregnancy.

A pregnant woman's mental well-being is crucial for a healthy pregnancy, and anything that adds unnecessary stress should be avoided. In the conversation discussed, a father-to-be was insisting on his mother being present during the final months of pregnancy, despite the pregnant woman's objections. While it's natural for couples to want their loved ones involved, the priority during this time should be creating a peaceful environment for the expecting mother. The father's emotional needs should not overshadow the mother's physical and emotional health. If the mother feels overwhelmed by her partner's demands, she should learn to assertively communicate her needs and set boundaries. It's essential to remember that the mother is the one carrying the child and deserves to have control over her space and her experience. In the end, the mother's comfort and well-being should be the top priority, and any support should be offered after the baby's arrival.

    • Setting Boundaries with Difficult Family Members During PregnancyCommunicate calmly, ask questions, involve boyfriend or speak directly to family member, prioritize own needs, and set clear expectations to establish healthy boundaries.

Setting boundaries with difficult family members, such as a bossy mother, can be challenging, especially during sensitive times like pregnancy. The speaker suggests calmly communicating and asking questions instead of making exasperated statements. If the boyfriend is not understanding, it may be necessary to involve him directly or even communicate with the mother herself. It's essential to remember that the pregnant person's needs and feelings come first, and they have the right to request space and privacy. In the case of an unstable romantic relationship, it may be necessary to set boundaries for oneself to avoid being drawn into the situation repeatedly. Communication and clear expectations are key to setting healthy boundaries.

    • Mother's inconsistent relationships impact speaker's feelingsSpeaker's complex relationship with mother shapes her emotions, with mother's repeated pattern of entering/exiting relationships negatively impacting speaker's happiness and sense of security, while speaker struggles to set boundaries due to power dynamic.

The speaker's relationship with her mother has been shaped by their past experiences, particularly her mother's repeated pattern of entering and exiting relationships. The speaker expresses concern for her mother's happiness but feels negatively impacted by her mother's inconsistent presence due to her relationships. The speaker also acknowledges the power dynamic between them, with the mother holding significant influence and the speaker feeling afraid to set boundaries. Despite the speaker's growing independence and entering her early thirties, the mother-child dynamic remains unchanged, with the mother continuing to behave assertively and the speaker feeling unable to challenge her. The speaker's call to the counselor was initially focused on her mother's new relationship, but it became clear that the underlying issue was the speaker's complex relationship with her mother and her struggle to assert her own needs and boundaries.

    • Expressing Gratitude and Setting Boundaries with a Loved OneApproach conversations with empathy, appreciation, and a willingness to listen. Prioritize happiness and self-respect, and foster healthier relationships through clear communication and mutual respect.

Expressing gratitude and setting boundaries with a loved one, especially a mother figure, can be a complex and nuanced process. It's important to remember that every situation is unique and that respectful communication is key. Many factors can influence a person's willingness or ability to establish healthy relationships, including their personal experiences, societal influences, and generational norms. In some cases, toxic dynamics may seem appealing due to the excitement and drama they bring, but ultimately, prioritizing happiness and self-respect is essential. To navigate these conversations, it's crucial to approach them with empathy, appreciation, and a willingness to listen and understand the other person's perspective. By leading with love and understanding, it's possible to foster healthier, more fulfilling relationships. Additionally, it's essential to remember that setting boundaries and expressing tough love doesn't mean being disrespectful or critical. Instead, it's about setting clear expectations and communicating in a way that encourages growth and mutual respect.

    • Supportive parent-child relationships involve mutual adviceEncourage open, respectful conversations with parents, avoiding competition or self-centeredness. Seek to understand their perspective and help them apply values in their own life.

Parents and children can have meaningful and supportive relationships where advice flows in both directions. However, it's crucial to approach these conversations with respect and sensitivity. If you're in a position of giving advice, avoid making it competitive or about yourself. Instead, remind your parent of the values they've instilled in you and encourage them to apply those same principles in their own life. If you're on the receiving end of advice, be open to hearing it and recognize that your parent's perspective comes from a place of love and pride. Remember, the ultimate goal is to help your parent be happy and fulfilled. If emotions run high during these conversations, try to stay calm and patient, recognizing that deep down, they may be reacting to something that resonates with them. And, as always, keep the lines of communication open and continue to have honest and respectful conversations.

    • Understanding your mother's perspectiveWhen confronting mom about unhealthy relationships, remember her reaction might be emotional and childlike. Offer tough love and set boundaries, but be supportive.

It's important to understand your mother's perspective and limitations before confronting her about her unhealthy relationship. She may not be used to dating or considering multiple partners due to her generation and past experiences. When you do decide to have a tough conversation, remember that your mother's reaction might be emotional and childlike, but it doesn't mean you're causing her more pain. Setting boundaries and offering tough love is necessary for both your sakes. It's essential to remember that your mother's anger is her choice, and she will likely try to guilt you. However, it's crucial to stand firm and be supportive while encouraging her to seek healthier relationships. Ultimately, your mother's reaction is a result of her emotional state, and she will likely come around when she's ready.

    • Setting boundaries with loved onesSetting boundaries with loved ones, even if it leads to emotional reactions, shows care and love. It's important to stay calm, let them calm down, and enforce boundaries consistently.

Enforcing boundaries with a loved one, even if it leads to a temper tantrum or emotional reaction, is not hurting them. Instead, it shows that you care and want what's best for them. The reaction is often a sign that the person deep down knows the truth and may be uncomfortable with the change. It's important to remember that when we get triggered, we all regress to a childlike state, and treating an adult like a child will not solve the issue. Instead, stay calm, let them calm down, and continue to enforce the boundary with love and confidence. This approach can help reshape the dynamic in a positive way. Remember, you're not abandoning them, but rather showing them that they deserve better. Start small and be consistent with your boundaries, and over time, the relationship may improve.

    • Moving on from the past and dealing with conflictsRecognize when it's time to move on, focus on new experiences, communicate effectively during conflicts, and avoid unnecessary drama. Vessi offers waterproof, breathable knit shoes for all-weather use, and 'Even the Rich' podcast explores inspiring stories of iconic celebrities like Selena.

Holding onto the past and constantly dwelling on negative situations can keep us stuck in unhealthy situations. It's important to recognize when it's time to move on and focus on new experiences and relationships. Additionally, it's essential to communicate effectively during conflicts and avoid getting drawn into unnecessary drama. Regarding the product discussion, Vessi offers a solution for those who want to wear sneakers all year round, even in rainy or snowy conditions. Their 100% waterproof, breathable knit shoes are ideal for mixed weather vacations or everyday use in places with unpredictable weather. Vessi's founders understand the challenges of dealing with wet shoes in various weather conditions and have created a product that addresses this issue. In the entertainment realm, the podcast "Even the Rich" explores the lives of iconic celebrities and their tumultuous journeys to fame. The latest season, "Viva Selena," focuses on Selena Quintanilla's impact and tragic death at a young age. Despite her untimely demise, Selena's positive influence continues to inspire generations. Lastly, a personal story was shared about a threesome situation where everyone involved caught feelings. The speaker developed feelings for one of the participants, but it's unclear how the other two individuals felt about each other. Effective communication and understanding boundaries are crucial in such situations to avoid misunderstandings and potential conflicts.

    • Navigating complex queer relationshipsQueer relationships can be complex and awkward to navigate, especially when feelings for multiple people are involved. Honesty and clear communication are key to avoiding confusion and hurt feelings.

The threesome between the speaker, Nat, and Rory wasn't planned beforehand and was a result of their existing friendships and past conversations. Nat had expressed a desire for male validation and had feelings for the speaker again after the threesome. The speaker was unsure of their feelings towards Rory and had slept with him alone a month later, which Nat did not know about. The speaker was trying to navigate their relationships with both Nat and Rory while being honest but also not wanting to hurt Nat's feelings. The speaker's actions towards Nat, such as picking her up from the airport and kissing her, were confusing and may have given her false hope. The situation highlights the complexity and potential awkwardness of navigating feelings and relationships in queer experiences.

    • Honesty is crucial in relationshipsBeing honest, even if difficult, is essential for strong and healthy relationships, rather than giving false hope and living a lie.

Honesty is crucial in any relationship, be it romantic or platonic. In the conversation discussed, it became clear that one person had feelings that were not reciprocated by the other. Instead of facing the truth, the person involved chose to give false hope, leading to potential harm and hurt feelings. It's important to remember that avoiding the truth, no matter how difficult it may be, can create a stickier situation in the long run. If you value a friendship or relationship, it's essential to communicate openly and honestly, even if the truth may be painful. Ultimately, it's better to face the truth head-on, even if it means dealing with the potential fallout, than to continue living a lie. Honesty may be hard, but it's the foundation of strong and healthy relationships.

    • Honesty is crucial for healthy relationshipsBeing honest, even if difficult, builds and maintains healthy relationships, while lying or hiding the truth can lead to pain and misunderstandings.

Honesty is key in maintaining relationships, whether romantic or platonic. Avoiding the truth may seem easier in the short term, but it can lead to feelings of betrayal, hurt, and damaged relationships in the long run. It's essential to communicate openly and honestly, even if the truth is difficult to share. In the case of a complicated friendship, acknowledging and addressing feelings and being upfront about them can lead to a stronger bond or the acceptance of moving on. Lying or hiding the truth, no matter the intention, can lead to unnecessary pain and misunderstandings. Ultimately, being honest, even if it's uncomfortable, is the best policy for building and maintaining healthy relationships.

    • Importance of clear communication in relationshipsClear communication is essential to understand feelings and intentions in a relationship, as assumptions based on past interactions or cultural norms can lead to misunderstandings and confusion.

Clear communication is crucial in understanding the intentions and feelings in a relationship. The speaker in this conversation expressed her confusion about the man's interest in her based on their past interactions, which included deep conversations and a sexual connection. However, she admitted that she didn't communicate her feelings and intentions directly to him, and he didn't seem to be initiating clear plans for future dates or conversations. The speaker's assumption that their deep conversations and sexual connection meant they were on the same page was not accurate, as they were both unsure of their feelings towards each other. This situation highlights the importance of clear and direct communication in relationships to avoid misunderstandings and confusion. Additionally, the current hookup culture norms of having deep conversations and casual sex without expectations can make it even more challenging to discern the true intentions in a relationship.

    • Being clear and honest in relationshipsClear communication leads to fewer misunderstandings and healthier relationships. Be upfront and direct, even if it's difficult, to avoid unnecessary pain and heartache.

Clear communication is key in relationships. The speaker in this discussion is considering having conversations with two people about her feelings for them. She acknowledges the importance of being upfront and direct, even if the truth may be difficult to share. By being clear and honest, individuals can avoid confusion and misunderstandings that can lead to unnecessary pain and heartache. The speaker also recognizes her own pattern of avoidance and plans to work on being more confident in expressing her feelings. Ultimately, the outcome of the conversations will depend on how the other parties respond, but the speaker believes that being truthful and giving them the opportunity to respond is the best approach. It's important to remember that communication is an ongoing process, and being open and honest with ourselves and others can lead to healthier and more fulfilling relationships.

    • Setting Boundaries with Toxic Family MembersMaintaining respectful boundaries can help protect emotional well-being while keeping family connections. Establish clear limits and engage in respectful conversations.

Setting boundaries and maintaining a respectful distance in relationships with toxic family members can be a healthier alternative to cutting them off completely. This was discussed in the context of a woman's long-standing issues with her boyfriend's family, who exhibited financial and emotional abuse. Despite her desire to keep her children connected to their extended family, she found herself being blamed and scapegoated for various problems. The woman and her boyfriend tried to maintain a cordial relationship with the family, but they continued to fight and speak negatively about them. The woman's suggestion was to establish clear boundaries and only engage in respectful conversations when the family was willing to do the same. This approach allows for the possibility of a future repair of the relationship, while also protecting the emotional well-being of those involved. The woman's boyfriend also needed to learn to avoid engaging in arguments with the family. The conversation touched on the complexity of family dynamics and the importance of finding a balance between maintaining relationships and protecting oneself from harmful behavior.

    • Navigating Relationships with Difficult Family MembersSet boundaries, communicate effectively, find a middle ground, focus on partner's relationship, control response, and mindful of energy given.

Maintaining relationships with difficult family members can be challenging, especially when their behavior causes drama and conflict. It's essential to set boundaries and communicate effectively with both your partner and the family members involved. You don't have to be the fixer or the savior, and it's okay to distance yourself if necessary, but cutting them off completely might not be the best solution. Instead, focus on your relationship with your partner and find a middle ground where you can minimize your involvement in the family drama while still maintaining some connection. Remember, you can't change or fix others, but you can control how you respond to their behavior. Additionally, be mindful of the energy you give to these relationships, as giving too much attention to the drama can make it worse. Ultimately, it's about finding a balance between love and self-preservation.

    • Setting boundaries in relationships with difficult family membersCommunicate openly, let go of past hurts, navigate conflicts peacefully, prioritize emotional well-being, and recognize growth and improvement

Setting and enforcing boundaries is crucial in maintaining healthy relationships, even with difficult family members. It's essential to communicate openly with your partner about your comfort levels and make decisions together. Letting go of past hurts and learning to navigate conflicts without escalating them can help reduce drama and promote peace. Remember, it's okay to prioritize your emotional well-being and seek space when needed. Additionally, recognizing that everyone handles conflict differently and that growth and improvement are possible can help make conversations less confrontational and more productive.

    • Setting boundaries in relationshipsCommunicating nonnegotiables and respecting each other's boundaries helps maintain personal power, prevent unnecessary drama, and strengthen connections in relationships.

Establishing nonnegotiables and boundaries in relationships is crucial for maintaining personal power and avoiding unnecessary drama. It's essential to identify and communicate those boundaries with your partner, ensuring both of you are on the same page. This can help navigate difficult situations and prevent feelings of powerlessness. Additionally, being aware of and respecting each other's nonnegotiables can lead to a stronger, more connected partnership. Remember, it's not about being right or fixing others; it's about finding a peaceful solution that works for both parties. Family relationships can be particularly challenging, but focusing on maintaining a positive connection and avoiding escalating conflicts can help keep the peace. Overall, understanding and respecting each other's boundaries is a vital aspect of any healthy relationship.

E631 Ask Nick - How Do We Give Up Our 6-Year Situationship

E631 Ask Nick - How Do We Give Up Our 6-Year Situationship

Welcome back to another episode of The Viall Files: Ask Nick Edition! We’re back to answer your burning questions about the world of dating and relationships. Before getting to our callers, we discuss whether or not you ask waiters for their opinions on the menu, and parenting strategies in bringing up “the birds and the bees.” We also read a submission from someone who thinks she may want to be an F Boy. As a single divorced mother, her life is very fulfilled. Except for one thing–sex. She doesn’t want a relationship, and is wondering how to fulfill her sex life while still being a good parent. We then get to our callers.

Our first caller is moving in with her ex who won’t speak to her. In a few weeks, she’ll be studying abroad through her grad program, and living in a house with 20 other students, including her ex who hates her. Our second caller’s person left to find herself in London. Fresh off the devastating breakup from someone she dated for a year, and has known since they’ve been children, she’s unsure whether to keep the friendship in the hope of rekindling one day, or cutting off communication. Our final callers have been in a 6 year long-distance situationship and can’t seem to fully commit or break it off. He is currently in a relationship, but they plan to see each other this weekend. They don’t want to cross that line, but can’t seem to cut ties fully with each other.

“We have to prioritize the quality of someone wanting to be with us.”
