    • The Power of Upbringing: Shaping Identity and PerspectiveOur upbringing plays a crucial role in shaping our perspective and identity, and understanding our historical context is essential in understanding ourselves better.

David Harewood's early years shaped his perspective and identity in significant ways. Growing up at a time with limited representation of black people on television, he faced a false and censored picture of himself and struggled to form a solid identity. The pressure to assimilate and downplay his blackness further contributed to his naivety and lack of self-awareness. Additionally, his father's distant and uninvolved nature had a cost on the family's emotional connection and may have affected David in some ways. Despite the challenges, David acknowledges the strength and fearlessness of his mother, who stood up against racism and fought for their rights. Overall, this conversation highlights the impact of one's upbringing and the importance of understanding one's historical context in shaping their perspective and identity.

    • Exploring the Impact of Racism and Societal Expectations on Fatherhood and ChildhoodUnderstanding and addressing past experiences of racism and societal expectations is crucial for fostering empathy and awareness in future generations.

Showing love, tenderness, and emotions were difficult for many men of the older generation due to societal expectations. David Harewood reflects on his own father's lack of affection and explores how this might have been influenced by the racism and hostility experienced by Caribbean immigrants in the UK during the 50s, 60s, and 70s. This period of intense racism and rejection seriously damaged many individuals, causing them to suppress painful memories and avoid discussing it with their children. Steven Bartlett, who grew up in a later time, admits his initial lack of understanding regarding his mother's combative attitude towards racism until he began listening to stories from that era. The conversation highlights the importance of acknowledging and addressing historical experiences to foster empathy and awareness in future generations.

    • The Psychological Effects of Racial AbuseGrowing up in a racially tense environment can have a profound impact on a person's mental well-being, affecting their sense of self and ability to relax. Understanding and empathy are crucial in supporting those who have experienced racial abuse.

Growing up in an environment filled with fear and racial tension can have a lasting impact on a person's sense of self. David Harewood shares his experience of living in a neighborhood where his family was targeted with racist acts, such as a brick being thrown through their window. Despite his mother's advice to not let it affect him, Harewood admits that it was not always easy to stay strong. The constant anxiety and fear of being targeted affected his sense of normalcy, making it difficult to relax even during periods without incidents. This conversation highlights the long-lasting psychological effects of racial abuse and the importance of understanding and empathy towards those who have experienced it.

    • The Impact of Racism and Mental Health on David Harewood's LifeDavid Harewood's personal experiences with racism and his father's mental health struggles have shaped his understanding of the importance of mental health awareness.

David Harewood experienced racism and witnessed his father's mental health deteriorate at a young age. He recalls being subjected to racial abuse from Leeds fans when he tried to sit with them during a game. Despite his mother's advice to hold his head up, he ultimately chose not to sit with the abusive crowd. As his father's mental health declined, Harewood noticed changes in his behavior and eventually learned that his father had been sectioned. At the time, he didn't fully understand what being sectioned meant, but later came to appreciate the loss of liberty and the impact it had on his father's life. Reflecting on these experiences, Harewood gained a deeper understanding of the challenges his father faced and the importance of mental health awareness.

    • Social Rejection and Mental Health: A Closer LookSocial rejection, especially in marginalized communities, can lead to mental health issues. Supportive environments and dismantling harmful societal structures are crucial for individuals' well-being.

There can be a strong connection between social rejection and mental health issues, particularly within marginalized communities. David Harewood reflects on his father's experience and the impact of living in a white-dominated society. He highlights a study that shows higher rates of mental health problems among black individuals in Western cultures compared to Africa. Steven Bartlett discusses the psychological effects of constant rejection, labeling theory, and how societal rejection can negatively affect self-belief and performance. Despite facing social rejection, David credits his ability to cope with a supportive environment. However, he also acknowledges the need to dismantle harmful societal structures that contribute to mental health struggles. This conversation underscores the importance of creating inclusive spaces that value and support individuals from marginalized backgrounds.

    • Challenging societal norms to define one's own identity.Embracing vulnerability and breaking free from societal expectations can lead to self-confidence and personal growth.

Identity and self-confidence are deeply intertwined with race and societal expectations. David Harewood, as a black man, struggled with understanding and accepting his own identity due to external pressures and stereotypes. He initially believed that he had to fulfill the image of a strong black man in order to measure up and feel validated. However, through therapy and self-reflection, he realized that vulnerability and sensitivity are also valid aspects of his identity. Society's rigid expectations limit individuals and create unnecessary insecurities. By embracing his true self, Harewood has gained confidence and a sense of comfort in his own skin. This conversation highlights the importance of challenging societal norms and allowing individuals to define their own identities.

    • Overcoming rejection and embracing the value of trauma: David Harewood's storyDespite facing rejection and experiencing mental health issues, David Harewood considers himself fortunate for being able to learn from his trauma and find meaning in his experiences.

David Harewood experienced rejection from both the white and black communities due to his intelligence and manner of speaking. Despite facing such rejection, he believes that there was value in the trauma he went through and considers himself fortunate for being able to come out of it. David Harewood's experience with mental health issues, such as manic depression and psychosis, was initially perceived as exciting and fun due to heightened levels of adrenaline and dopamine. However, the crash that followed brought about moments of confusion and blurred memories. He recounts a specific incident where his disturbed energy affected a dog, highlighting the impact his mental state had on his surroundings.

    • Living with Psychosis: A Journey towards RecoveryUnderstanding and Support: Keys to Overcoming Mental Illness

David Harewood had a profound experience of psychosis, where he heard voices and had delusions that seemed incredibly real to him. He recounted a night where he received a message from what he believed to be the voice of Martin Luther King, instructing him to go to a specific store, put on a suit, and close the gap between good and evil. Despite feeling sobbing and confused, David followed the instructions and ended up being sectioned by the police. Throughout this ordeal, he lost his sense of identity and didn't even remember his own name. It was only through the help of a stranger and the support of his friends that he was able to begin the journey towards recovery. This conversation highlights the challenges and complexities of living with a mental illness and the importance of understanding and support from others.

    • David Harewood's Experience and Insights on Mental Health and the Importance of SupportMental health issues can cause significant behavioral changes and require intervention. It is crucial to have a support system and address the combination of physiological, environmental, and societal factors that contribute to breakdowns promptly and compassionately.

Mental health, particularly psychosis, can cause drastic changes in behavior and require intervention. David Harewood shared his experience of witnessing a loved one's sudden change and deteriorating mental health, leading to the need for sectioning. He emphasized the importance of having a support system, as his friends played a crucial role in helping him through the challenging situation. Moreover, David highlighted the combination of physiological and environmental factors that contribute to a breakdown, including stress, lack of sleep, and unresolved trauma. His journey also revealed the impact of racism and criticism on his mental well-being, showcasing the need for a supportive and inclusive society. Ultimately, the conversation underscores the significance of understanding and addressing mental health issues promptly and compassionately.

    • Finding Freedom Through ActingActing offers a therapeutic escape from insecurities and doubts, prompting reflection on finding joy and fulfillment in our own lives.

Acting serves as a form of escapism and a therapeutic space for individuals, such as David Harewood and Maisie Williams. Both of them found solace in becoming someone else on stage, leaving behind their insecurities and doubts. Acting provided them with a controlled environment where they could immerse themselves in a character and experience a sense of freedom and joy. This highlights the contrast between the unpredictable and uncontrollable nature of real life, full of contradictions, failures, and successes. It prompts us to consider why we can't find equal joy in our daily lives and what changes we could make to bring more joy and fulfillment into our own identities.

    • The Power of Sharing: Inspiring Connections and Fostering EmpathyOpening up about personal struggles can have a profound impact, as seen through David Harewood's journey. His story not only destigmatized mental health issues but also encouraged others to seek help and foster a sense of community.

Opening up about personal struggles and experiences can have a profound impact on others. David Harewood's decision to publicly share his mental health journey led to unexpected developments, such as book deals and a documentary. Despite initial fears and anxieties, the positive response and outpouring of support from strangers showed the power of vulnerability in creating connections and fostering empathy. By sharing his story, Harewood not only helped to destigmatize mental health issues, but also inspired others to speak up and seek help. This highlights the importance of honest conversations, as they can touch people's lives and encourage a sense of community and understanding.

    • Breaking the Silence: Overcoming Shame and Stigma in Mental Illness Through Shared StoriesOpenly discussing mental illness and sharing personal experiences can empower individuals and combat stigma, while also shedding light on injustices faced by marginalized communities within the mental health care system.

There is a widespread shame and stigma associated with mental illness, particularly psychosis and being institutionalized. David Harewood, as a recognizable actor, has been able to openly discuss his experiences with psychosis and being sectioned, inspiring others to talk about their own struggles. Through his book tour, he has encountered numerous individuals who have shared their stories of being in mental institutions or having loved ones who have been sectioned. It is clear that when people feel safe enough to let their walls down and share their deepest insecurities and fears, it can be liberating and lead to a more open and honest life. However, the conversation also highlights the injustices faced by people of color during moments of crisis, where they are disproportionately criminalized and mistreated. This revelation underscores the importance of addressing the systemic biases and discrimination embedded within mental health care.

    • Breaking the Stigma: Understanding Mental HealthMental health affects us all, and it is important to be compassionate and supportive towards individuals facing mental health challenges. By fostering empathy and understanding, we can create a more inclusive environment for those struggling with mental health issues.

Mental health issues, including psychosis, can happen to anyone. David Harewood's personal experience and reflection on his own struggle with psychosis highlights the importance of understanding and acknowledging that we all have mental health, and it is a fragile aspect of our well-being. The conversation emphasizes the need to break the stigma surrounding mental health and to recognize that mental illnesses can affect anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. It is crucial to be compassionate and supportive towards individuals who are going through mental health challenges, as their experiences and emotions can be overwhelming. By fostering empathy and understanding, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for those struggling with mental health issues.

    • Embracing Vulnerability and Finding Fulfillment in Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness and embracing one's unique qualities are essential in navigating the challenges and insecurities of a professional journey, ultimately leading to fulfillment and success.

David Harewood has undergone a significant period of vulnerability and healing. He reflects on his regrets about doing a documentary and the fear of having said too much, which potentially affected his career as an actor. Despite not receiving offers to play leading characters since returning to England, David embraces who he is now and finds fulfillment in doing documentaries that offer complexity and challenge. He realizes that being versatile and adaptable has contributed to his success and compares himself to water, taking the shape of whatever container he is poured into. This conversation highlights the importance of self-awareness and embracing one's unique qualities while navigating the challenges and insecurities that arise in a professional journey.

    • Taking Control, Embracing Versatility, and Learning from Failure for Success and Growth. To achieve success and personal growth, focus on what you can control, embrace diverse opportunities, learn from failures, and always be prepared for challenges and new experiences.

Taking control of what we can control and looking after ourselves is crucial for success and personal growth. David Harewood emphasizes the importance of not being defined by societal expectations or limitations and instead focusing on playing diverse characters and embracing versatility. He also highlights the significance of facing tough times and learning from failures, as they can be valuable lessons. Additionally, he stresses the need to take care of our younger selves and advises young actors and individuals to prepare for challenges and rocky times. Steven Bartlett underscores the power of choice and the importance of accepting and embracing what can be controlled, while avoiding resentment and negativity. Finally, David's establishment of a production company reflects his desire to contribute to well-run projects and take on new challenges.

    • Taking Charge and Creating OpportunitiesBe the boss of your own destiny, inspire others through your actions, and pave the way for future generations.

It is important to bring excellence to everything we do and to create opportunities for ourselves. David Harewood emphasizes the importance of not waiting for others to write our stories but instead taking charge and creating our own work. He encourages the younger generation to value themselves and start their own production companies, becoming the boss of their own destiny. Additionally, David highlights the significance of inspiring others through our actions and being a role model. He shares how his presence alone as a black actor inspired young aspiring actors to pursue their dreams. Ultimately, the key takeaway is to be an example, leave a personal legacy, and crack open opportunities for ourselves and future generations.

Moment 177: You're NOT Lazy! This Is The REAL Reason You Procrastinate: The Performance Doctor
According to Adam, procrastination is a natural part of the creative process, and rather than a method of avoiding hard work, it is a defence mechanism. Procrastination can be a method of protecting yourself against what you find to be psychologically challenging, or a way to avoid negative emotional feelings such as confusion, boredom, anxiety and fear. In order to beat procrastination, Adam says that you need to identify what negative emotions are stirred up by tasks that you consistently put off. Once you have identified these you can then change them by reframing them into a more interesting challenge.
