Moment 184: I Was Kidnapped Whilst Running The Entire Length Of Africa: Russ Cook

Moment 184: I Was Kidnapped Whilst Running The Entire Length Of Africa: Russ Cook
He became the first person to run the full length of Africa—10,000 miles in 352 days—but just after day 100, Russ Cook, aka the Hardest Geezer, faced the toughest challenge of his life. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Russ found himself running through chaos, dodging violence, and literally outrunning men armed with machetes. With threats of kidnapping looming and his life on the line, he managed to escape and keep pushing forward. Months later, after enduring sandstorms in the Sahara, crossing rainforests, and navigating endless stretches of empty road, Russ finally completed his journey. Starting in Cape Agulhas, South Africa, and finishing in Tunisia, he covered the equivalent of 386 marathons. Throughout the journey, Russ faced life-threatening dangers—armed robberies, kidnappers, and harsh terrains. But the craziest part? After all those miles, he realised what he’d really been running from—and had to face it head on. His story isn’t just about running. It’s for anyone facing their fears, questioning their path, or trying to break free from what’s been holding them back—because that was him too. Russ unpacks all of this, and more, in his book HARDEST GEEZER: Mind Over Miles. Out now. Extended Moment: Guy Raz: Why 99% of Businesses Fail & This Secret Made Apple, Pixar, & Elon Musk Billions!
In this moment, the host of ‘How I Built This’, discusses the lessons he has learned from interviewing over 20,000 people, ranging from global CEO’s, superstars to rural shepherds in Afghanistan.   Guy has built his career on the idea that every business is a story, and this business must tell this story to itself and others. He believes that all successful founders share common traits and outlooks, such as: fearing the regret of not trying more than the fear of failure. Believing in their product so much that they have almost superhuman endurance, and continue despite multiple failures. Guy also says that the most successful founders often don’t do it alone and have a co-founder to help them withstand the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. Feeling stuck and dissatisfied with where you are in your life is never a place we want to be in. Perhaps you are contemplating a major life change - moving to a new city, quitting your job, leaving a long term relationship - that you believe will be the antidote to your future happiness and fulfilment. Psychology shows that this might not always be the case. Wanting to change something about our environment may reflect that the true change we need to make is internal.

We are joined by Dr Lisa Marie Bobby, host of the Love, Happiness and Success podcast as she talks us through the unexpected ways we can unlock and begin our next chapter in life. Listen now!
