    • The Power of UnsupervisionUnsupervised childhood experiences can foster independence, problem-solving skills, creativity, and adaptability, ultimately shaping one's entrepreneurial spirit and success.

Casey Neistat's unsupervised and exploratory childhood played a pivotal role in shaping his entrepreneurial spirit and resilience. Growing up without strict rules or supervision allowed him to develop a sense of independence and problem-solving skills from a young age. The freedom to explore and experiment led him to conduct various creative endeavors, such as placing coins on train tracks to observe their transformation. As Casey reflects on his upbringing, he acknowledges the power and gift of unsupervision, enabling individuals to navigate challenges, think innovatively, and adapt to circumstances. Despite the desire to shield his own children from hardships, Casey recognizes the crucial role that difficulties played in shaping his identity and success.

    • Casey Neistat's Journey: Overcoming Darkness and ChallengesDespite a difficult upbringing, Casey Neistat learned to navigate the world and make money from a young age, highlighting the importance of resilience and determination in overcoming obstacles.

Casey Neistat's upbringing was marked by darkness and challenges. Despite attending a fancy school, Casey couldn't protect himself from the troubles he faced at a young age. He learned to make money from a tender age, navigating the world of paper routes and even delving into the math behind weed sales. Casey's parents, although trying their best, were inadvertently absent due to work and other circumstances. The divorce of his parents introduced even more difficulties, with Casey feeling like he had to fight for attention amongst his siblings. Through it all, Casey maintains that his parents did their best, but he can't help but look back and wonder about their choices.

    • Casey Neistat's Journey: Overcoming Challenges and Fulfilling Childhood PromisesDespite a difficult upbringing, Casey Neistat's determination and unwavering commitment to his dreams serve as a reminder to stay focused and overcome obstacles in order to fulfill our own personal promises.

Casey Neistat's difficult childhood, including his mother's infidelity, shaped his determination to fulfill the promises he made to himself as a child. Despite the challenges he faced, Neistat remained resolute in his mission to achieve his dreams and create a better life for himself. He had a clear vision of his future from a young age, with New York City always being a part of his plan. His unwavering commitment to realizing his childhood promises drove him to overcome obstacles and persevere in the pursuit of his goals. Even unexpected events and becoming a father at a young age did not deter Neistat from his mission. His story serves as inspiration to never let setbacks derail our dreams and to stay focused on fulfilling our own personal promises.

    • Fearlessness and Naivety: The Keys to SuccessEmbracing fearlessness and naivety can unlock our potential, allowing us to overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and find fulfillment in both our personal and professional lives.

Casey Neistat's journey from a troubled teenager who ran away from home to a successful entrepreneur was fueled by a sense of fearlessness and naivety. Having nothing to lose, Neistat faced life's challenges head-on and found creative solutions to overcome them. He embraced the unknown and took risks, even when others doubted his capabilities. This mindset allowed him to seize opportunities and carve his own path, ultimately leading him to achieve success in his career and personal life. Neistat's story reminds us that sometimes, being fearless and embracing naivety can be the key to unlocking our full potential and finding fulfillment in life.

    • Embracing Risks: Unplanned Moves That Lead to SuccessSeize Opportunities: Embrace risks, follow your passions, and take bold actions to uncover unexpected success and create opportunities for yourself. Present struggles are minor compared to the privileges and countless opportunities we have.

Taking bold, seemingly reckless actions can lead to unexpected success and opportunities. Casey Neistat's decision to quit his job and move to New York City, despite having no plan, education, or experience, may have seemed stupid at the time, but in hindsight, it turned out to be a brilliant move. It highlights the importance of taking risks and following through with powerful feelings and desires. Neistat emphasizes the privilege we have in being born in the United States and the countless opportunities that come with it. He challenges the notion of a "privilege of mindset" and reminds us that our present struggles pale in comparison to the hardships faced by previous generations. In the grand scheme of things, our challenges are minor, and we should seize the opportunities presented to us.

    • Embracing Personal Definitions of Success and HappinessDefine your own version of success and happiness, embrace failure as a learning opportunity, and take that first step towards living a fulfilling life true to yourself.

Not everyone wants the same things in life, and that's perfectly okay. The idea of success and happiness shouldn't be based on external standards or societal expectations. Happiness and fulfillment can be found in different ways for different people, as showcased by Casey's best friend who leads a simple yet fulfilling life. It's important to define what happiness and fulfillment mean to ourselves, rather than chasing after what others deem as successful. Additionally, embracing failure as a part of life is crucial. Failure teaches us valuable lessons and helps us grow. Taking that first step, even if it's scary, is essential in pursuing our aspirations and living a life true to ourselves.

    • The Power of Persistence and PatiencePursuing dreams requires relentless determination, patience, and staying committed to goals. Embracing failure, ignoring others' opinions, and persisting through obstacles increase chances of achieving success.

Persistence and patience are key in pursuing your dreams. The story of Anvil, a rock band that never broke through, shows us the power of relentless determination. Despite facing years of failure and financial hardships, the lead singer refused to give up on his dream. It was through a documentary that their story gained attention and ultimately led to their success. This story, along with Casey Neistat's own journey, highlights the importance of continuing to push forward, even when faced with obstacles and setbacks. The fear of failure and the opinions of others should not deter us from pursuing our passions. By embracing patience and staying committed to our goals, we increase our chances of achieving success, no matter how long it takes.

    • Delusional Patience: The Key to SuccessHaving patience and a lack of backup plan can fuel determination and success, as seen in the stories of Casey Neistat and Mr. Beast. This requires a strong belief in oneself and unwavering focus on goals.

Having patience and a lack of backup plan can fuel one's determination to succeed. Casey Neistat and Mr. Beast, both successful YouTubers, faced numerous failures and criticisms before achieving their goals. Despite being constantly told they were losers and constantly facing setbacks, they never gave up. This kind of persistence requires a strong belief in oneself and a deep passion for what they were doing. They had no other option but to succeed, as their backup plan was not appealing. This delusional patience and unwavering focus on their goals allowed them to push through even the toughest times. The study mentioned about "plan A thinking" also suggests that having a singular focus on the desired outcome can drive motivation and determination.

    • The impact of having a backup plan on motivation and performance.Relying on a plan B can decrease motivation and hinder performance, highlighting the importance of maintaining a sense of urgency and drive towards plan A.

Having a plan B or a safety net can significantly reduce motivation and performance towards plan A. This was illustrated in a study where participants were given a puzzle to solve in order to get a snack. In one group, the snack was only available as a reward for completing the puzzle correctly, while in the other group, participants were informed that they could get the same snack from a vending machine down the hall. The group with the alternative option showed lower motivation and poorer performance. This shows the psychological impact of having a backup plan and highlights the importance of maintaining a sense of urgency and drive by not relying on a plan B.

    • The Power of Mindset and PassionYour mindset and passion can transform difficult circumstances into opportunities for personal fulfillment and success.

Casey Neistat's mindset and perspective played a significant role in turning a challenging situation into a positive one. Despite being in a halfway house with no money, he felt excited and hopeful instead of feeling sorry for himself. This demonstrates the power of mindset in transforming difficult circumstances. Additionally, Neistat's interest in video and storytelling stemmed from his desire to have a voice and be heard. Through creating videos, he found a way to articulate his thoughts and connect with others. Ultimately, the combination of passion and the ability to express oneself can lead to personal fulfillment and success.

    • Casey Neistat's unconventional journey in filmmaking and the power of finding one's unique styleEmbrace your limitations, find creative solutions, and stay true to yourself in creative pursuits. Originality and individuality are crucial for success.

Casey Neistat's lack of formal education in filmmaking forced him to develop his own unique style. He didn't have the same resources or training as others, but he found creative ways to make videos that resonated with people. This coincided with the rise of computers and editing software, making video creation more accessible to the masses. Neistat's limited hard drive space led him to create shorter videos, but it also pushed him to be a different kind of filmmaker. However, he criticizes the trend of people trying to mimic successful YouTubers like Mr. Beast, highlighting the importance of originality and individuality in creative pursuits.

    • Focusing on truth and meaningful work over views and popularity.Prioritize authenticity and impactful content that resonates, rather than chasing attention or superficial success.

Pursuing truth and creating meaningful work should be the primary goal, rather than chasing views or popularity. Casey Neistat emphasizes the importance of being true to oneself and creating content that resonates with people on a deeper level. He believes that true art and impactful work have a lasting effect on people's lives, even if they may not receive the highest view counts or make the most money. Neistat emphasizes the significance of creating something that can change the world and affect others, rather than simply seeking attention or superficial success. This perspective contrasts with the approach of using data and trends to determine what content to create, as seen in the case of Jimmy (MrBeast). Ultimately, the key takeaway is that seeking truth and creating meaningful work is more important than pursuing views or popularity.

    • Jimmy vs. Casey: Fame vs. Passion in the YouTube WorldPrioritize purpose and passion in creating content on YouTube, rather than solely focusing on views or fame. Create work that brings value and makes a positive impact.

Jimmy, known as MrBeast, is considered one of the most important YouTubers in the history of YouTube, and even in the history of entertainment. He has built an empire that reaches and impacts millions of people. However, Casey Neistat, another prominent YouTuber, emphasizes that the focus should not solely be on views or fame. Casey believes that it's important to create content because you genuinely love it and want to make a positive impact, rather than seeking validation or competing with others. Casey's cautionary advice is to prioritize purpose and passion over the pursuit of fame or popularity. Ultimately, it's about creating meaningful and fulfilling work that brings value to both yourself and the world.

    • The Hidden Dangers of Social Media and Protecting Children's Well-beingParents and guardians must be aware and proactive in safeguarding children from the harmful effects of social media, such as validation seeking, eating disorders, and social issues.

Social media can have a detrimental impact on children's mental health and overall well-being. Casey Neistat emphasizes the need to protect kids from seeking validation through likes and views on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. He points out the growing issues such as eating disorders and the manifestation of social issues due to social media exposure. Casey's personal experience with success outside of social media before finding real success on platforms like YouTube highlights the importance of being mindful and cautious about the impact of these platforms, especially on young individuals. It is crucial for parents and guardians to understand the potential dangers and take measures to shield their children from the negative effects of excessive social media use.

    • Patience and Consistency: The Key to SuccessSuccess comes from being patient and consistent, as Casey Neistat's story demonstrates. By persistently creating and sharing content, he was able to capitalize on opportunities and achieve breakthrough success.

Patience and consistency are key to achieving success. Casey Neistat's breakthrough moment came after years of hard work and trying different approaches. He had been creating videos for 15 years, but it wasn't until he found the right platform and started producing content consistently that everything aligned for him. By consistently creating and sharing videos on YouTube, he was able to build a loyal audience and gain recognition from brands and creative directors. Luck played a part in his success, but it was his preparation and readiness for the opportunity that allowed him to capitalize on it. This story shows that being persistent and persevering through challenges can eventually lead to breakthroughs.

    • Pursuing Dreams Without QualificationsQualifications are not always necessary to pursue goals and dreams. Passion, determination, and willingness to learn can lead to success, regardless of traditional qualifications. Don't let fear of being unqualified hold you back.

Qualification or experience is not always a determining factor for pursuing one's goals and dreams. Casey Neistat's story shows that despite feeling unqualified in various aspects, such as starting a technology company without any coding experience or getting into movies without formal qualifications, he still took the leap and found success. This highlights the importance of having passion, determination, and the willingness to learn and adapt along the way. It serves as a reminder that sometimes the fear of being unqualified should not hold us back from pursuing what we truly desire. With the right mindset and drive, we can overcome obstacles and achieve remarkable things, even if we don't fit the traditional mold of "qualification."

    • Challenging self-imposed limitations to achieve successQualifications can be gained through determination and experience; don't disqualify yourself from pursuing opportunities. Close the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

Being qualified or unqualified is often a matter of perspective and self-belief. Casey Neistat's journey shows that many people label themselves as unqualified and disqualify themselves from pursuing certain opportunities. However, by taking the opposite approach and qualifying himself for things he was objectively unqualified for, Neistat was able to achieve success. Furthermore, Neistat shares the importance of learning to work with your hands and the valuable life lessons it can teach. The ability to close the gap between where you are and where you want to be is a superpower that many people never develop because they believe they are unqualified. So, it's important to challenge self-imposed limitations and recognize that qualifications can be gained through determination and experience.

    • Embracing self-reliance in times of crisis. When facing challenges, remember that you have the power to find solutions within yourself. Embrace self-determination and have the confidence to overcome obstacles that may initially seem impossible.

In moments of crisis or uncertainty, we often look to others or higher authorities to solve our problems. However, the key lesson here is that sometimes we are the only ones who can effectively solve the issue at hand. This mindset of self-reliance and taking responsibility for finding solutions can lead to successful outcomes. It's about recognizing that even though we may lack experience or expertise in certain areas, we have the ability to learn, adapt, and figure things out ourselves. It may require a bit of naivety and a willingness to take on challenges, but by asking "how hard can it be?" and embracing self-determination, we can achieve remarkable things and overcome obstacles that initially seem insurmountable.

    • The Challenges and Unexpected Consequences of Business SuccessSuccess in business is not just about financial gain, but also about leadership, self-awareness, and considering the impact of decisions on others.

Success in business can come with its fair share of challenges and unexpected consequences. Casey Neistat's experience highlights the naivety and misconceptions that can arise when aiming for the "holy grail" of an exit or selling a company. Despite the initial elation and financial gain, Casey felt a sense of guilt and disappointment for letting down the employees who helped him reach that point. Furthermore, the acquisition by CNN turned out to be a mixed bag, with unrealistic expectations and exploitation of his personal brand. This serves as a reminder that success is multifaceted and includes factors such as leadership, self-awareness, and aligning values. It's important to consider the bigger picture and the impact of our decisions on others, even in the face of financial success.

    • The pitfalls of ego and naivety in the business worldTrue fulfillment comes from personal growth and humility, not just external success.

Casey Neistat's experience highlights the dangers of ego and naivety. He admits that his failure to recognize opportunities and his hubris led to the demise of his company under CNN. Despite being surrounded by brilliant people and having incredible incentives, Neistat's lack of self-awareness caused him to overlook the potential for success. After the company shut down, Neistat faced a period of darkness and struggled to understand the overwhelming fame he had gained. This experience taught him that true fulfillment cannot be solely achieved through winning or external success. It serves as a reminder to remain humble, constantly learn, and prioritize personal growth over superficial achievements.

    • From Financial Security to Uncertainty, Casey Neistat's JourneyDespite achieving financial security and fame, Casey Neistat struggled with uncertainty, pressure, strained relationships, and a lack of fulfillment in his life, emphasizing the importance of finding purpose and clarity.

Casey Neistat experienced a significant level of financial security that could have lasted his entire life. However, despite achieving this milestone, he found himself feeling unsure and uncertain about what to do next. This led him to make the decision to move from New York to LA, hoping to escape the pressure and expectations. However, this move didn't bring the anticipated relief. Furthermore, Neistat's fame and the content he created put strain on his relationship with his wife, Candice. Ultimately, Neistat describes his life as being in a state of darkness, like a movie with beautiful shots but no clear narrative. He feels guilty for not doing more, even though he still takes paid jobs.

    • Balancing Creativity and ContentmentCasey Neistat recognizes the importance of finding a balance between rest and productivity to maintain fulfillment and avoid financial challenges in the future.

Casey Neistat is currently finding peace and fulfillment in his personal life as a father and husband, but he feels a sense of darkness and unease in his professional life. He acknowledges that he is coasting through life and not pushing himself creatively or professionally. While he believes that taking breaks and finding moments of leisure are necessary for cultivating new ideas and inspiration, he is also aware that he may be using this time as an excuse for laziness. Casey understands that true fulfillment comes from creating something meaningful and sharing it with others, and he is dissatisfied with not fully utilizing his creative potential. Ultimately, he recognizes the need to find a balance between rest and productivity to maintain a sense of purpose and avoid financial difficulties in the future.

    • Casey Neistat's Privilege and Pursuit of Creative FreedomEmbrace your privilege and pursue your passions without fear of judgment or external expectations. Nobody really cares about you in the grand scheme of things.

Casey Neistat recognizes his privilege and acknowledges that his current lifestyle is a result of that privilege. He admits that if he were broke or his kids were hungry, he would be working tirelessly to provide for them. However, he is choosing to indulge in his current situation because he can. He desires to create meaningful videos and content that he believes in, without being concerned about views or popularity. Despite feeling guilty about his laziness, he acknowledges that there is nothing holding him back from pursuing his creative passions. Additionally, Casey reflects on the advice he needed to hear when he was younger - that nobody really cares about you in the grand scheme of things. This realization frees him from the pressure of external expectations and allows him to focus on creating without fear of judgment.

    • Embrace Your Individuality and Find Your Own PathAccept that nobody cares about what you do, focus on your own path, cultivate patience and persistence, find your unique niche, and embrace the potential for growth and new possibilities.

As a creative person, it's important to embrace your individuality and do what feels right to you. Trying to be a copy or imitate someone else will never make you the original. The key is to accept that nobody really cares about what you do, allowing you to focus on your own path without seeking validation. Along this journey, it's crucial to cultivate patience and persistence. By continuously improving and staying committed, you increase your chances of stumbling upon incredible opportunities. Despite its ups and downs, the vlogging medium has evolved and now offers space for niche creators to thrive. The key is to find your unique niche and connect with your audience authentically. Ultimately, it's about embracing the potential for growth and new possibilities.

    • Balancing Personal and Professional IdentityIt is important for artists to separate their personal lives from their work, but finding the right balance between personal and professional identity can be challenging. Authenticity plays a crucial role in this process.

Casey Neistat appreciates the artist's ability to separate their personal life from their work. He admires how some artists, like the one he mentioned, focus solely on their artistic contribution to the world while leaving their personal lives a mystery. Casey struggles with this separation, as his daily vlogging blurs the line between selling his personality and his art. The conflation of the two starts to affect his mindset. In addition, Casey also gives feedback to Steven Bartlett, advising him to set up a studio in downtown Manhattan instead of outer Brooklyn to make it more convenient for guests. Overall, this conversation highlights the importance of authenticity and the challenges of finding the right balance between personal and professional identity.

Moment 178: They're Lying To About Low Fat Foods, THIS Is What They're Doing!: Tim Spector
In this moment, world renowned gut heath expert, Tim Spector discusses how to navigate the modern food landscape and overcome the brainwashing of the food industry. It turns out that answering the seemingly simple question of, ‘what is quality food?’ is a lot more difficult that it first appears. Too often foods packaged as ‘healthy’, ‘low calorie’ or ‘low fat’ are in fact the opposite. Instead, Tim believes we need to go back to eating foods in their simplest, unpackaged original form as nature intended. Moment 177: You're NOT Lazy! This Is The REAL Reason You Procrastinate: The Performance Doctor

Moment 177: You're NOT Lazy! This Is The REAL Reason You Procrastinate: The Performance Doctor
According to Adam, procrastination is a natural part of the creative process, and rather than a method of avoiding hard work, it is a defence mechanism. Procrastination can be a method of protecting yourself against what you find to be psychologically challenging, or a way to avoid negative emotional feelings such as confusion, boredom, anxiety and fear. In order to beat procrastination, Adam says that you need to identify what negative emotions are stirred up by tasks that you consistently put off. Once you have identified these you can then change them by reframing them into a more interesting challenge. PayPal: Max Levchin (Part 1 of 2)

During its formative years in the late 1990's, Paypal attracted an extraordinary group of young entrepreneurs, who then went on to build some of the best known companies in tech. They became known as The PayPal Mafia—and Max Levchin was one of the leaders. A computer genius from Soviet Ukraine, Max joined Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Reid Hoffman and others as they grew PayPal into a massively successful online payment service. Along the way, they encountered almost every start-up challenge imaginable, including the emotional ouster of Elon Musk as CEO. After PayPal was acquired by eBay in 2002, Max couldn't sit still, so he launched a startup lab that eventually led to another successful fintech company: Affirm. Guy will talk to Max about Affirm next week, in the second episode of this two-part series.
