TLDR: In this podcast clip from episode 458, neurosurgeon Dr Rahul Jandial discusses the purpose of dreaming and what our sleeping brain reveals about our waking life.

1Ask AI

In the latest episode of the Feel Better Live More Bitesize podcast, Dr. Rahul Jandial, a leading neurosurgeon and author of This Is Why You Dream, discusses the intricate relationship between our dreams and waking life. This episode delves into why we dream and what it reveals about our mental and emotional state.

The Purpose of Dreaming

Dr. Jandial proposes a fascinating perspective: we sleep in order to dream. This assertion stems from various neurological observations, particularly those relating to sleep deprivation. Here are some core points he makes:

  • Sleep Pressure: The brain accumulates a form of pressure, signaling a need for sleep. If we resist sleep, our brains will forcibly initiate it after a period of wakefulness.
  • Active Brain During Sleep: Contrary to popular belief, the brain remains highly active during sleep. Dreaming involves significant electrical and metabolic activity, making the dreaming brain similar in some ways to the waking brain.

The Brain's Networks

The episode explains that different brain networks dominate during sleep and wakefulness:

  • Dreaming Brain: Active imagination and emotional processing.
  • Waking Brain: Focused on logical reasoning and task engagement.

Dr. Jandial highlights the significance of this divide. While the waking brain operates through logic and executive functions, the dreaming brain thrives in creativity and emotional intensity.

The Therapeutic Role of Dreams

Emotional Processing

Dr. Jandial suggests that dreaming might serve as a nocturnal therapist.

  • Trauma and Stress: Dreams can help individuals deal with trauma, negative thoughts, and chronic stress, reflecting the emotional storms of daily life.
  • Vivid Dreams: These tend to occur later in sleep cycles, often carrying positive emotional valence that could offer clarity and comfort.

Moreover, researchers see REM sleep as crucial for emotional first aid, potentially allowing the brain to process emotions and lay down memories in a more rational state, less burdened by emotional weight.

Dream Interpretation

Dreams are deeply personal, and their meanings can vary widely:

  • Subjectivity: Interpretations must be contextual, drawn from individual experiences rather than generalized meanings found in dream dictionaries.
  • Self-Reflection: Engaging with dreams can lead to important self-discovery and acknowledgment of emotional states that we might overlook during our busy, waking hours.

Techniques to Remember Dreams

Dr. Jandial emphasizes strategies to enhance dream recollection and understanding:

  • Auto-Suggestion: Telling yourself that you will remember your dreams before sleep might increase the chances of retention upon waking.
  • Journaling: Writing down dreams can aid in processing and finding personal meanings attached to them.

The Final Moments

In a profound conclusion, Dr. Jandial discusses what happens in the brain during dying moments, suggesting that dreaming could play a role even then. Here’s what he states:

  • Electrical Activity Post-Death: Patients often display a burst of brain activity after clinical death, likened to dreaming brainwaves, providing a comforting thought about our last moments.

Conclusion: The Importance of Dreams

Dr. Jandial's reflections underscore that dreams are not merely glitches in sleep, but rather integral parts of our cognitive process. They hold therapeutic potential, assisting with emotional processing and providing insights into our lives.

  • Dreams as a Gateway: Engaging with our dreams allows for self-exploration, making space for deeper understanding of our waking selves.
  • Prioritize Your Sleep: With dreaming serving crucial functions for our emotional health and creativity, prioritizing sleep is essential to harness these benefits.

Final Takeaway

Remember, the essence of understanding dreams seeks personal meaning. As Dr. Jandial notes, no one can interpret your dreams better than you can. He encourages listeners to explore this internal landscape for growth and healing.

Reflecting on Your Dreams

As you navigate your waking life, consider keeping a dream journal and practicing auto-suggestion techniques to connect deeper with your subconscious each night.

This enlightening discussion is a reminder of the power within us—our dreams are not simply stories told in sleep; they may hold keys to our emotional resilience and creativity.

How To Heal Chronic Pain with Dr Howard Schubiner (re-release) #519

How To Heal Chronic Pain with Dr Howard Schubiner (re-release) #519

Feel Better, Live More with Dr Rangan Chatterjee

Headaches, migraine, back, neck or joint pain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), fibromyalgia – they’re just some of the common causes of chronic pain, which is estimated to affect between a third to half of all UK adults, or just under 28 million of us.   If you or someone close to you is one of them, you don’t need me to tell you it can be physically and emotionally draining. You probably feel like you’ve tried everything – so today’s podcast has the potential to be a life-changing listen for you. My guest is Dr Howard Schubiner, Director of the Mind Body Medicine Center in Michigan and author of Unlearn Your Pain: A 28-day Process to Reprogram Your Brain.   Emerging neuroscience tells us our brains actually create what we experience in our bodies, through a process called predictive processing. Pain doesn’t come from the body part where it’s felt, it’s created by our brain, signalling that something needs attention. And as Howard explains, our emotions and stress activate the same pain centres in our brain as an injury. If you’ve ever had a broken heart and experienced chest pain? That’s what’s happening.   The same thing occurs with chronic pain. In the vast majority of cases, there is no structural problem – such as injury, infection or a tumour – although of course these must be ruled out. Instead, your brain has created a neural pathway which remembers the pain and keeps you trapped in a vicious cycle. You fear the pain, that causes you stress, and the stress makes the pain real.   And that is the absolute key here: it’s not ‘all in your head’, your pain is real. And there is something you can do about it. During this conversation, Howard reveals why the key is changing your narrative on pain. His revolutionary therapies – which you can easily access – have been proven to work not just with chronic pain but in other persistent conditions such as depression and anxiety, chronic fatigue and long Covid.   We discuss the role healthcare practitioners can play in these conditions, through listening and empathy. We also chat about the role of posture, cultural differences in pain experience and complementary therapies to his approach.   Chronic pain isn’t a subject we’ve covered in depth on this podcast before, so I’m very pleased I have the chance to bring this important conversation to you. Howard is one of the leading researchers in this field and his work represents a game-changing, paradigm shift in thinking about how we approach this epidemic. I hope what you’ll take from this episode is that the power of your brain is immense, and that knowledge is power. I hope you enjoy listening.   Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes.
