Be a Leader Worth Trusting | Dr. Henry Cloud

    en-usSeptember 20, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Understanding and earning trust in leadershipLeaders must understand the importance of trust and the deeper emotional needs of those around them to effectively lead and earn trust

Trust is a deep-rooted emotion that isn't easily given or earned, especially in leadership contexts. According to Henry Cloud, people don't trust someone until they feel truly understood and connected with them on a deeper level. This is why leaders, even those who have led large organizations, may be hesitant to label themselves as such. They understand the importance of trust and the responsibility that comes with it. Trust is not just about persuasion or having the right skills, but also about understanding the needs and emotions of those around us. As Cloud emphasized, trust is a crucial aspect of effective leadership, and his book "Trust: When to Give It, When to Withhold It, How to Earn It and How to Fix It When It Gets Broken" offers valuable insights on this topic.

    • From individual contributor to effective leaderDevelop self-awareness, seek education, practice, and receive support to grow as a leader. Transitioning from an individual contributor to an effective leader is a necessary part of career progression.

No matter what field or industry you excel in, you will inevitably reach a point where your ability to lead becomes just as important as your technical skills. Being good at your job may earn you a team or a department, but without effective leadership, progress will be limited. This realization often comes as a surprise to many individuals, and they must quickly adapt to this new aspect of their career. While some may believe that leadership is an innate quality, the truth is that it can be learned and developed through conscious effort. The process of becoming a better leader involves a combination of self-awareness, education, and practice. This may include attending workshops, reading books, and seeking feedback from others. Neurological changes are required for behavior change, so it's essential to apply new knowledge in real-life situations and receive support throughout the learning process. In summary, anyone can grow as a leader, but it requires dedication and a commitment to continuous learning. The transition from being an individual contributor to a leader is an inevitable part of career progression, and embracing this change will enable you to reach new heights in your professional journey.

    • Leadership involves results and relationshipsEffective leaders invest in understanding perspectives, personal growth, and building strong relationships for long-term success.

Effective leadership involves both achieving results and building strong relationships. Leaders leave a wake behind them, and a one-sided wake focusing only on results will lead to a short-lived tenure. Instead, leaders should invest time in understanding the perspectives of those around them, including those above, at the same level, and below. This requires personal growth, including dealing with internal doubts and fears. Leadership is not just about expertise and concepts, but also about executing them with confidence and authenticity. Therefore, a balanced approach to leadership development, focusing on both results and relationships, is essential for long-term success.

    • 360-degree feedback process for leadership growthSeeking 360-degree feedback from colleagues, subordinates, and superiors can reveal blind spots and improve leadership skills.

Effective leadership requires self-awareness and feedback from all aspects of one's life. A 360-degree feedback process, which gathers input from people above, below, and at the same level, can provide valuable insights into how one's leadership style impacts others. Moreover, personal life issues can significantly influence leadership abilities, making it essential to consider the whole person. Receiving constructive feedback through a 360-degree process can be painful but is an invaluable tool for growth and improvement. As the proverb goes, correcting a wise person makes them wiser, while correcting a fool may be met with resistance. Embracing the feedback, even if it's difficult, is a sign of a strong and wise leader.

    • The Importance of Trust in Leadership and OrganizationsTrust fuels growth and scaling in companies, and its absence can lead to performance issues, morale problems, or crises. Craig Groeschel's new book offers a simple model with five elements to help leaders build and maintain trust within their teams.

Trust is an essential element in leadership and organizational success, and its breakdown can lead to various issues. Craig Groeschel, a renowned speaker at global leadership summits, emphasized this point during a conversation, sharing his observation of the increasing distrust in society post-COVID. He explained that trust fuels growth and scaling in companies, and leaders who cannot trust correctly may either micromanage or trust the wrong people. Groeschel, who has been working on this concept for decades, decided to write a book on the topic due to its relevance in the current context of decreased trust. He suggested using a simple model with five elements as a guide for leaders to build and maintain trust within their teams. Trust is crucial for organizations to thrive, and its absence can lead to performance issues, morale problems, or even crises.

    • Five Elements of Trust: Understanding, Reliability, Intimacy, Commitment, and RespectFocusing on understanding, reliability, intimacy, commitment, and respect can help build stronger relationships and trust within organizations. Self-reflection and open communication are crucial for assessing and improving trust.

Trust is essential for scaling up and growing any organization, be it with stakeholders, team members, or customers. Trust is not always easy to establish, but looking for certain qualities can help identify trustworthy individuals. After extensive research, the author identified five key elements of trust: understanding, reliability, intimacy, commitment, and respect. By focusing on these areas, individuals and teams can build stronger relationships and trust within their organizations. The author also emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and open communication to assess and improve trust within the team. The book serves as a valuable resource for anyone looking to build stronger, more trusting relationships in their professional and personal lives.

    • Effective communication and trust building go beyond selling and persuadingDeep listening and understanding builds trust and rapport, leading to successful negotiations and relationships

Effective communication and building trust involves more than just selling or persuading. It requires deep listening and understanding of the other person's needs, hurts, and wins. This process activates mirror neurons in the brain, creating a sense of attunement and opening up the other person's system. Negotiators, such as FBI hostage negotiators, use this approach to build rapport and resolve conflicts. In business, failing to understand what the other side needs can lead to product launch failures and damaged relationships. Trust is built when we truly listen and respond to what others are trying to communicate. It took the speaker years to learn this valuable lesson.

    • Show genuine care and empathy to build trustTo build trust, prioritize others' needs, offer resources, and demonstrate genuine interest in their growth.

Building trust in a professional relationship goes beyond just understanding each other's perspectives. It's essential to show genuine care and empathy towards the other person, ensuring they feel valued and supported. However, it's crucial to remember that empathy should not be manipulated. When someone feels that you have their back and genuinely care about their well-being, they are more likely to trust and let go of guardedness. To communicate this care effectively, consider focusing on their needs, offering resources, and demonstrating a genuine interest in their personal and professional growth. By prioritizing their needs and showing that you're invested in their success, you'll build a stronger, more trusting relationship.

    • Employee care and engagement boost productivity and relationshipsFocusing on employee well-being and providing valuable resources can create a work environment where everyone feels valued and motivated, leading to increased productivity and stronger relationships.

Prioritizing employee care and engagement leads to increased productivity and stronger relationships. The speaker emphasized the importance of genuine care and sincere communication in fostering trust and effective leadership. He also recommended checking out Henry Cloud's resources, including his website (doctorcloud.com) and digital platforms like Leadership University (leadu.tv) and Boundaries, for further learning opportunities. By focusing on employee well-being and providing valuable resources, leaders can create a work environment where everyone feels valued and motivated.

    • Leaders prioritize people's growth and well-beingSuccessful leaders invest in their personal and interpersonal development to enhance emotional intelligence and effective communication skills, building trust, engaging talent, and creating a positive work environment.

Today's successful leaders prioritize the growth and well-being of their people, recognizing them as the most valuable resource. This emphasis extends to the leaders themselves, who are investing in their personal and interpersonal development to enhance their emotional intelligence and effective communication skills. According to research, these intangible qualities are the key differentiators between high performers and average leaders. By focusing on their inner world and interpersonal skills, leaders can build trust, engage talent, and create a positive work environment that drives success.

    • Productive conversation about leadershipEngaging in meaningful discussions and sharing helpful content can lead to new insights and improved leadership styles. Creating a supportive community can foster learning and growth for all involved.

When we engage in meaningful discussions and share helpful content, we all benefit. Henry and I had a productive conversation about leadership, and we both gained insights that we can apply to our own leadership styles. By sharing this content and encouraging others to join our leadership community, we create an environment where everyone can learn and grow. So, let's continue to support each other in our leadership journeys, and remember that every interaction is an opportunity to become better leaders. Thank you for being a part of this conversation, and let's keep adding value to each other and to the wider leadership community.

    2563 Just Calm Down

    2563 Just Calm Down
Fixing what goes wrong the first time is a challenge. There are so many variables. Sometimes it's you and emotions, something you can't control, or circumstances. Just calm down. Peace of mind cannot be attained by ignoring the problems. You have to solve them. Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT However, when there are problems, you can get a little uptight. Or maybe that's an understatement. Frustration builds against what's happening and your sweetheart. Then, it can quickly escalate to you being really mad and angry. When emotions get the best of us, we cannot be our best.  Emotions can be your best friend or they can haunt you. And in relationships, especially marriage, emotions cannot lead the conversation. That takes you down a dark rabbit hole where you can't see what's coming. Seriously. Think back to when someone sounded threatening to you in a tone of voice or words. Your natural reaction is to go on the defense. No one likes to be threatened in any form or fashion. So why do we as spouses think we can do it to our sweethearts? If you want to win more than lose, just calm down. The K.I.S.S. ~ Just calm down! Now that win or lose doesn't mean that you get your way. It's about building a life together and communicating to achieve the goals you set as a couple. But none of that can happen if you don't calm down. There's no reason to throw fuel on the fire.  So how do you just calm down? It all takes some T.L.C.! Take a deep breath. Breathing gives your mind and body space to pause. You can gather yourself and look at the situation differently. And you most certainly can take three long breaths before jumping in.  Lower the intensity. You can't communicate well if you are over-heated. Have you ever felt your heart when you are so mad? It can feel like it's exploding out of your chest. You can't figure out life in this situation. Care for the heart. See the person's heart so you don't let your own emotions get carried away. Conflict and challenges are never fun regardless of the circumstances. But if you take a moment and just calm down, you can change the outcome to be beneficial from all sides. This is a way you stay clear of being emotionally triggered.  But let's be honest. You will have a blowout or two; very intense heated discussions. But you can always mend the fences with a little T.L.C.! Which means, you get to just calm down. "Be present. Be incredible.
