In this enlightening episode of the podcast, Dr. Rangan Chatterjee discusses practical strategies for making lasting changes in our lives. In a world filled with conflicting expert opinions and information overload, he emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and trusting our own instincts.

Key Themes

Our Reliance on Experts

  • Many people are dependent on external expertise, which can hinder our ability to tune into our own instincts.
  • Dr. Chatterjee argues that we already possess the knowledge required to improve our health; what’s missing is self-awareness and insight into our behaviors.

The 3M Framework for Daily Routines

Dr. Chatterjee introduces his simple yet effective 3M Framework which includes:

  • Mindfulness: Engaging in mindfulness or meditation to start the day with clarity.
  • Movement: Incorporating movement into your morning, even if it’s just a few minutes.
  • Mindset: Cultivating a positive mindset through practices like journaling.

Importance of Mindfulness and Morning Routines

  • Starting the day with intention can prevent 'micro-stress doses' from accumulating, leading to better mood and healthier choices.
  • Mindful practices, such as taking a moment to simply enjoy a cup of coffee without distractions, can significantly enhance our day.

Building Self-Awareness Through Journaling

  • Dr. Chatterjee advocates for a powerful journaling practice that promotes self-reflection.
  • His Three Question Journal fosters self-discovery and insight into our choices, guiding us towards making sustainable changes.
    • Questions Include:
      • What’s the most important thing I need to do today?
      • What went well today?
      • What can I do differently tomorrow?

Small Changes Make a Big Impact

  • For those overwhelmed by time constraints, Dr. Chatterjee reassures that small daily practices can be transformative.
  • He provides an example of a single mother who introduced a five-minute routine that greatly improved her stress levels and eczema symptoms.

Transforming Your Life is Possible

Dr. Chatterjee emphasizes that anyone can change who they are, and it's never too late to start:

  • Key Takeaway: You can create small promises to yourself daily and keep them, which builds trust in your ability to create change.
  • By consistently engaging in self-reflection and exercising self-compassion, individuals can break free from limiting beliefs and unhealthy habits.

Why Routines Matter

Dr. Chatterjee explains that routines are essential for grounding us:

  • They provide a sense of control amidst the uncertainties of life, which can improve mood and overall well-being.
  • Developing these habits, even in a busy household, leads to better functioning and sets a positive example for those around us.

Conclusion

Through deep insight and practical strategies, Dr. Rangan Chatterjee encourages listeners to take charge of their health and well-being. By leveraging self-awareness, mindfulness, and small routines, individuals can break free from expert overload and create lasting, meaningful change in their lives.

Feel Better, Live More with Dr Rangan Chatterjee

So much of our happiness seems conditional. “I’ll be happy when...” I get the job, the relationship, the money, or simply a sunny day. But when our wellbeing relies on external, fleeting things, it’s on a shaky foundation. When we tie our sense of happiness and contentment to getting or achieving something externally, it feels constantly out of reach. Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my weekly podcast for your mind, body, and heart. Each week I’ll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests. Today’s clip is from episode 426 of the podcast with Master Shi Heng Yi. He belongs to the 35th generation of Shaolin Masters and began practising Kung Fu at the age of four. In the 36 years since, he’s acquired a wealth of knowledge in Chinese martial arts and Zen Buddhism. In this clip, we explore why so much of our happiness seems conditional, the true meaning of freedom, and how to deal with life’s ups and downs. #500 The Most Powerful Conversation I Have Ever Had: The Secret To Dealing with Any Stressor In Life with Dr Edith Eger

#500 The Most Powerful Conversation I Have Ever Had: The Secret To Dealing with Any Stressor In Life with Dr Edith Eger

Feel Better, Live More with Dr Rangan Chatterjee

Caution: contains themes of an adult nature. This week marks the 500th episode of this podcast! And what a journey it’s been! There have been so many conversations that have had a profound impact upon my life and to celebrate, I thought it would be fitting to share the conversation that has impacted me the most: My conversation with the incredible Dr Edith Eger back on episode 144 fundamentally changed who I am and how I see the world. I was lucky enough to meet Edith, now aged 97, a few weeks ago at an event in San Diego and sit down and have a chat with her. We were able to record our brief conversation, which you can hear at the end of this episode. For those of you who haven’t already heard our initial conversation, Edith is a holocaust survivor who became a psychologist and an expert in the treatment of post-traumatic stress. She is also the author of 3 amazing books, The Choice: Even in Hell Hope Can Flower, The Gift: 12 Lessons to Save Your Life, and most recently, she has released The Ballerina of Auschwitz – a retelling of her story for younger adults from a different perspective. As a Jew living in Eastern Europe under Nazi occupation, Edith was taken to Auschwitz concentration camp with her parents and sister, at the age of 16. In this conversation, she explains how she found her inner resources, how she came to view her guards as the real prisoners, turn hate into pity and, incredibly, she even describes her horrific experience as ‘an opportunity’. Edith not only survived Auschwitz, she freed herself from the trauma of her past by using her mind and the healing powers of forgiveness. For those of you who have already heard this conversation, I would urge you to listen again because each time you listen, you will hear something different – as Heraclitus, the Greek philosopher said, ‘no man ever steps in the same river twice’. This really is a timeless conversation that keeps on giving. Edith’s story is incredible. It is powerful, confronting and, at times, challenging. Above all though, it is deeply inspiring and I cannot think of a better way to celebrate 500 episodes of my podcast – I hope you agree. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes.
