    Podcast Summary

    • The Power of Personal Values in Challenging SituationsHaving a strong foundation of personal values gives you the courage to face difficult choices, maintain integrity, and make decisions that align with your beliefs.

It is crucial to have a strong foundation of personal values and convictions in order to navigate challenging situations and make tough decisions. Doug Conant shares his experience of working in a high-pressure environment during the largest LBO in history and the need to step up his game. He emphasizes the importance of being well-anchored in what you believe, as it gives you the courage to face difficult choices and maintain integrity. Conant highlights that many people operate by reacting to circumstances without a clear sense of their own convictions. By doing the internal work of defining what you stand for, you can be better equipped to contribute, perform, and make decisions that align with your values.

    • Balancing Performance and People: The Key to Successful LeadershipValuing both performance and people is crucial for successful leadership. Balancing tough standards with kindness creates a positive organizational culture and leads to outstanding performance.

Doug Conant emphasizes the importance of valuing both performance and people in the corporate world. Despite facing resistance and going against the norm, Conant believed that taking care of the people would ultimately lead to better performance. He learned this lesson during his time at Craft, where he realized that being tough-minded on standards of performance and tender-hearted with people was not mutually exclusive. Conant applied this philosophy at Nabisco, which led to outstanding performance and eventually landed him the position of president. Furthermore, he encountered another challenging situation at Campbell, but remained committed to his belief, making it clear to the employees that their value mattered. This example highlights the significance of balancing tough standards with kindness towards people for successful leadership and organizational culture.

    • Building a Strong Organizational Culture: Trust, Performance, Tough-Mindedness, and CompassionPrioritizing trust, performance, and employee engagement is crucial for transforming a struggling company. A strong organizational culture requires tough-mindedness and compassion in making tough decisions and valuing employees.

Doug Conant successfully transformed a struggling company by prioritizing trust, performance, and employee engagement. He recognized the need to change the culture and rebuild trust within the organization. By valuing and caring for the employees, he was able to motivate them to care about the company's agenda and work towards lifting it up. Conant made tough decisions, replacing a significant number of leaders who couldn't meet the new standards. He focused not only on business performance but also on how leaders comport themselves. This approach resulted in improved employee engagement, with employees knowing what needed to be done and waiting for a tough-minded leader to make it happen. Conant's compassionate approach towards those who were let go demonstrated his commitment to building a supportive and caring culture. Overall, the key takeaway is that building a strong organizational culture requires trust, performance, tough-mindedness, and compassion.

    • Building Trust and Credibility: The Key to Effective Decision-MakingTrust and credibility are vital for leaders to make tough decisions. Honoring and respecting individuals, listening to the organization, and involving the team in decision-making lead to successful change implementation.

As a leader, building trust and credibility with your team is crucial in order to make tough decisions at the top. By consistently making deposits into the emotional bank account with the culture, leaders ensure that they have enough trust and credibility to rely on when making difficult choices. It is important to inspire trust in order to inspire performance, and leaders should prioritize honoring and respecting individuals throughout the decision-making process. In the first 100 days of leadership, it is essential to listen to the organization, establish a principle-centered framework, and involve the team in creating a plan. This approach allows for a smoother and more successful implementation of change in the long run.

    • Staying true to your purpose as a CEOCEOs should prioritize their values, strive for continuous improvement, foster open dialogue in the boardroom, and use a clear framework for decision-making in high-stakes situations.

As a CEO, it is essential to have a clear sense of purpose and values, and to stay grounded in them despite external pressures. Doug Conant emphasized the importance of knowing what you stand for and committing to it, even if it means taking a long-term perspective and potentially sacrificing short-term gains. He highlighted the significance of consistently improving in both the workplace and the marketplace, while meeting or exceeding expectations. Additionally, when it comes to the board, fostering a culture of open dialogue and diverse perspectives is crucial. Effective board members constructively engage in discussions and understand their role in oversight rather than execution. Lastly, decision-making, especially for high-stakes matters, can be complex and emotionally challenging, but having a clear framework based on what truly matters can make the process easier.

    • Prioritizing people and balancing tasks: the key to effective leadership.Effective leadership requires prioritizing the well-being and development of team members, as well as balancing task performance. It also involves creating a leadership plan and continuously improving skills through learning and practice.

Effective leadership is all about prioritizing and taking care of the people. Many leaders tend to get caught up in the tasks and performance delivery, neglecting the development and well-being of their team members. However, Doug Conant highlights the importance of balancing both aspects. While it is essential to meet deadlines and achieve goals, leaders should not compromise relationships with their employees. Taking the time to understand and support their development is crucial. Additionally, Conant emphasizes the need for a leadership plan, just like any other business plan. Leading people is a profound responsibility that should not be taken lightly, and leaders must continuously strive to improve their skills through learning, studying, and practicing. Ultimately, effective leadership cannot be improvised but requires intentional effort and mastery.

    • Intentionality and Balance in LeadershipLeaders should dedicate time to reflect, align their values with organizational goals, and strive for self-improvement while meeting the needs of their organization and staying true to themselves.

Leaders need to be intentional about their actions and thoughts. While a majority of the day may be spent reacting to various challenges and distractions, it is crucial for leaders to dedicate at least 25% of their time to knowing what truly matters and being attentive to it every day. This requires reflection, studying the world around them, and creating a leadership model that aligns with their values and desired impact. However, it is not enough to focus solely on personal aspirations; leaders must also consider the expectations and needs of their organization or enterprise. By finding the intersection between personal values and organizational objectives, leaders can be effective and fulfilled in their roles. It is possible to balance self-actualization with meeting the needs of others, as long as leaders approach it with a continuous improvement mindset and a commitment to being true to themselves.

    • The value of knowledge and research, but also the importance of lived experience and patience in achieving long-term growth and success. It is important to balance knowledge and research with personal experience and wisdom gained over time. Patience and focusing on long-term growth are essential for success in a society driven by instant gratification. Additionally, incorporating morning routines can help stay centered and prepared for daily challenges.

Individuals who teach or write, but haven't actually experienced what they're discussing, bring valuable perspective and objectivity. While they may miss the visceral understanding of being in the shoes of those they're writing about, they add significant value through their knowledge and research. However, it is crucial to also recognize the importance of lived experience and wisdom gained through time. Patience is a key factor in achieving goals and realizing potential, as there is no substitute for cultivating wisdom through experience. In a society driven by quick fixes and instant gratification, it is essential to focus on long-term growth and continuous improvement rather than seeking immediate results. Creating room for personal and organizational growth over time leads to enduring success and greater societal impact. Additionally, incorporating morning routines to gather oneself and reflect on what matters most can be instrumental in remaining centered and prepared for daily challenges.

    • Prioritizing what matters: an essential guide to balancing life and workFocus on what truly matters in life, such as family, well-being, community, and faith. Practice gratitude and make a meaningful impact by showcasing appreciation and reinforcing values in personal and professional interactions.

Doug Conant emphasized the importance of prioritizing what matters most in life and work. He acknowledged that his family, personal well-being, community, and faith were the five key aspects that he focused on. By waking up early and reflecting, he was able to center himself and effectively manage these cylinders for almost 30 years. Additionally, Conant shared his practice of writing personalized thank-you notes to stand out during job interviews. This practice not only helped him showcase his gratitude but also made a lasting impression on others. It brought balance by highlighting the positive contributions and reinforced values within the organizations he worked for. Overall, Conant's experiences highlight the significance of prioritization, gratitude, and finding ways to make a meaningful impact.

    • The Power of Appreciation: Reinforcing Standards and Building a Positive Work CultureExpressing gratitude through handwritten notes fosters appreciation, motivates individuals to contribute meaningfully, and creates a positive work environment.

Expressing appreciation and celebrating contributions of significance is a powerful way to build a culture of appreciation and reinforce standards within an organization. Doug Conant emphasized the importance of writing handwritten notes to employees, demonstrating his appreciation for their contributions. He even went above and beyond by ensuring the notes were timely and personal, sometimes even FedExing them to employees' homes. Mark Zuckerberg was inspired by this practice and started writing thank you notes as well. The lesson here is that celebrating and acknowledging the efforts and achievements of others not only creates a positive work environment but also motivates individuals to continue making meaningful contributions.

#195 Morgan Housel: Get Rich, Stay Rich

#195 Morgan Housel: Get Rich, Stay Rich

The skills it takes to get rich are drastically different from the skills it takes to stay rich. Few understand this phenomenon more than Morgan Housel. He's identified unique lessons about wealth, happiness, and money by studying the world's richest families and learning what they did to build their wealth and just how quickly they squandered it all.
In this conversation, Shane and Housel discuss various aspects of risk-taking, wealth accumulation, and financial independence. Morgan explains the importance of understanding personal financial goals and the dangers of social comparison, lets everyone in on his personal financial “mistake” that instantly made him sleep better at night, and why the poorest people in the world disproportionately play the lottery—and why it makes sense that they do. They also touch on the influence of upbringing on financial behaviors, the difference between being rich and wealthy, and the critical role of compounding in financial success. Of course, we can’t have a writer as good as Morgan Housel on the podcast and not ask him about his process, so Housel concludes with insights into storytelling, his writing processes, and the importance of leading by example in teaching financial values to children.
Morgan Housel is a partner at Collaborative Fund. Previously, he was an analyst at The Motley Fool. He is a two-time winner of the Best in Business Award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers and was selected by the Columbia Journalism Review for the Best Business Writing anthology. He's the author of two books: The Psychology of Money and Same as Ever.

#194 Abigail Shrier: The Parent-Therapy Trap

#194 Abigail Shrier: The Parent-Therapy Trap
Over the last decade, therapy has become the de facto solution to solve all sorts of problems for all sorts of people. Everyone has slowly accepted that therapy is normal and a net benefit to society.

But instead of helping kids work through difficult circumstances, what if it's just making the problems worse? That's what Abigail Shrier thinks is happening, and in this conversation, she reveals some surprising reasons why.

Shane and Shrier discuss the real reason therapy is "bad," how we got to this point of acceptance as a culture, and what you can do as a parent to get back to normalcy. Shrier also shares her experiences with lifelong therapy patients, who should actually be in therapy, and the one thing that makes someone a successful parent.

2644 Putting the Puzzle Pieces Together

2644 Putting the Puzzle Pieces Together
Unlocking your health mystery takes time and persistence. However, you can solve the puzzle and reset your health by putting the puzzle pieces together. One step at a time leads to miles of greatness! ~ Kristianne Wargo Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT But unfortunately, society has trained us that if we can take away your symptoms, why can't you still live however you desire? No restrictions. No exercise. Pure joy. Or is it truly pure joy? I have been battling a couple of different viruses since the beginning of the new year. Usually, I'm pretty healthy, not getting sick. But this season has not faired in my favor.  So it got me thinking even more. Since going through perimenopause and now on the other side, plus having gut issues my entire life, maybe I really need to take a hard look at what my body needs.  I know I'm not the average person which diets or fitness regimens are created for. A 1200-1500 calorie day does not work for me at all. And please do not flood my inbox as to what I might be missing. I've done the research and am currently studying real-time as to how my body responds and reacts to food, movement, vitamins, supplements, and so forth. Like any good detective, you've gotta put the puzzle pieces together to understand the whole picture. The K.I.S.S. ~ Put the puzzle pieces together! If you are struggling with your health, I want to encourage you not to give up. You can figure out what is happening and what needs to change. One thing I've been researching is the Paleo Diet. This diet is a whole-foods diet that includes only the most nutritionally dense and sustainable foods. (The Paleo Approach, https://ThePaleoMom.com, Pg. 9) Now, you have heard me say that the food all of us should be eating follows one rule: If God made it, I can eat it. But that's in it's natural state.  For example, God did not make bread. He made grains. So how those grains are prepared and eaten does affect the nutrient density of the food along with how it is absorbed within a person's body. If you are struggling with your health or weight, this might be a good alternative for you to try. As I said, I am taking you on my health journey in discovering all my quirks and likenesses.  You get to decide what you would like to try. This by no means substitutes for personal medical advice.
    - What are you eating that is real? This is the most natural state of the foods you eat.
    - What are you eating that is processed? If it's not one ingredient, it is processed.
    - How can you integrate more nutrient-dense foods?
One thing I want to caution you on. You do not have to define how you eat to anyone.  I have been asked several times, "What program are you doing?" My answer (and it should be yours, too) -- I'm eating what my body requires.  Because you might be a blend of Keto and Paleo. And there is nothing wrong with that. Don't fall into the trap that you must have a definitive cookie-cutter answer.  Your body is uniquely made. So treat it with the respect it deserves by putting together all the puzzle pieces. Now, I am currently working in the preparation stage gearing up to change my body's nutritional menu. I am taking detailed notes as to how my body responds to the "junk food". Then, I'll be able to see exactly how good food affects my body. It's going to be a long process, but I know we'll both learn so many things to benefit us in the long-run.  Hope you're ready to construct your puzzle. "Train for life. 2941 More of We

    2941 More of We

Life can get in the way of loving those closest to us, especially our spouses. So instead of hiding in our busyness and floundering more in someone else's highlight reel, make a commitment to more of we.

How much time do you spend with your spouse?

Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. https://createyournow.mn.co

And would you say that you spend less time together now than when you got married?

Most of us have to really stop and think when we see our sweethearts. And as for the time, what time is it again?

The number one relationship, if you're married, is your spouse.

But very quickly, we find other ways to occupy our time, distract our attention, and lead us down a rabbit hole in our own homes.

It just does not seem fair to anyone!

Yet you live it every day. You get up and do YOUR thing and forget that there's someONE in your life. You take care of the children, because you have to. But the rest is left to fend for themselves.

How can any marriage be awesome if that's a typical every day?

What if you would make time for each other?

What if there was more of we?

The K.I.S.S. ~ More of WE!

My goal here is to get you thinking about how you spend TIME with your spouse.

Are you showing up with your best self, or is your spouse getting the leftovers?

"Leftovers are great for food, not so much for love!" ~ Kristianne Wargo

You get out what you put into your marriage. So why not show up with enthusiasm? Why not give more when you don't receive? Why not have compassion during challenges in life? Why not be together more than you are apart?

It's hard to build a strong foundation in marriage if you're not together. Logistics do matter.

I want to encourage you to analyze your time with your spouse.

    1. How much time do you spend together in bed?
    2. How much time do you spend as a couple awake and interacting?
    3. How much time do you spend talking about life, not just kids and career?

Then from there, you'll be able to see what is happening regarding time.

    Is time on your side?

Assuming that you fall into "most of us," then you can make some tweaks to how you hang out together. The way you spend your time together matters!

QUESTION: What can you do differently to add time to love?

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"
