    • The Dark Side of Gratitude and the Power of BeliefGratitude can sometimes blind us to unhealthy situations, but having someone believe in us and give us opportunities can be transformative and teach us the value of dependability and accountability.

Gratitude can have a dark side. Kat Cole shares her experience of her mother staying in an unhealthy and dangerous relationship due to an excessive sense of gratitude for the material possessions they had. This dark side of gratitude can make us blind to the opportunities and responsibilities we have towards creating a better future for ourselves and others. However, Kat also highlights the importance of someone believing in us and giving us opportunities to grow. She recalls how her mom's trust in her and Bonnie's belief in her abilities at Hooters were pivotal moments in her life. These experiences taught her the value of dependability and treating her work seriously. This highlights the importance of having someone who bets on us, supports us, and holds us accountable for our actions.

    • The Power of Humble Confidence and Belief in People: Kat Cole's Journey to SuccessEmbracing new opportunities and having a positive attitude towards learning and asking for help can lead to unexpected success, even in unfamiliar territory.

Humble confidence and belief in people can lead to unexpected opportunities and success. Kat Cole's story exemplifies this as she found herself taking on various roles in a restaurant business, not initially realizing her capability to run a restaurant. Despite her ambition to pursue a different career path, she embraced the opportunity to launch Hooters franchises in different countries and quickly took on leadership roles. Kat's humble confidence came from her mindset of knowing she could figure things out and being comfortable asking for help. Additionally, her belief in people and optimistic outlook played a significant role in her success. Though there were challenges and sacrifices along the way, her belief in people ultimately paid off.

    • Unleashing the Magic: Believing in Human Potential and the Power of Customer Service JudoBy believing in people's potential, treating them with positive intent, and utilizing customer service judo, transformative effects can be achieved, despite challenges and imperfections. Doing the right thing trumps being right.

Believing in people's potential and treating them with positive intent can have transformative effects. Kat Cole shares her belief that humans are unfinished magic, and by seeing people for their possibilities and potential, they are more likely to live up to it. Despite the occasional letdown, the upside of believing in people outweighs the disappointments. Additionally, the story of handling a difficult customer at Hooters illustrates the power of customer service judo, where using someone's energy in a giving way can change their behavior and even garner big tips. Furthermore, Kat Cole reflects on the challenges of transitioning from a peer to a leader and the importance of acknowledging and learning from one's imperfections. Ultimately, it is more important to do the right thing than to be right.

    • Challenges and Mistakes in Leadership: The Journey of Change and Innovation in a Struggling CompanyThe importance of questioning established practices, taking responsibility, and embracing humility and courage in a leadership role for successful change and innovation.

Change and innovation often come with challenges and mistakes, especially when taking on a leadership role in a struggling company. The speaker, Kat Cole, shares her experience of inheriting a brand that was trying to protect its legacy to its own detriment while facing an economic recession and franchisees who were struggling financially. Despite making some positive changes, such as launching an omnichannel business, Cole made a major mistake by miscommunicating a product launch to franchisees, which damaged their trust and confidence in her leadership. This highlights the importance of having the courage to question established practices and take full responsibility in a leadership role. Ultimately, Cole had to clean up the mess she created and learn the importance of both humility and courage in her position.

    • The Importance of Building Trust and Maintaining Integrity in LeadershipPrioritizing trust and integrity is essential in leadership as it not only repairs relationships but also sets the foundation for future collaborations and success in leadership roles.

Building trust and maintaining integrity are essential in leadership. Kat Cole's decision to prioritize the relationship with franchisees by handling the Costco situation with integrity paid off in the long run. Despite the concerns of creating demanding franchisees, Kat focused on repairing trust and ensuring open communication. She acknowledged the mistake, took responsibility, and used it as a learning opportunity. This approach not only repaired the trust but also set the foundation for future collaborations. The conversation highlights the tension between leading, directing, and collaborating as a leader, and the importance of making decisions with the best interests of the business and the stakeholders in mind. Building trust and maintaining strong relationships are crucial for success in leadership roles.

    • Balancing emotions, research, and action for success.Investing in building the brand, addressing complaints, and being open to feedback are essential for navigating tensions and meeting market expectations. Actions speak louder than words.

In order to navigate tensions and achieve success, it is crucial to balance emotions with research and action. Kat Cole emphasizes the importance of honoring and respecting the emotional element of tensions, while also providing evidence through data and facts. However, she emphasizes that actions speak louder than words, and it is necessary to invest in building the brand and addressing any complaints. Additionally, she shares a personal story about the importance of listening to feedback and making necessary changes, even in challenging communication circumstances. This highlights the significance of being open to feedback and adaptable in order to meet the expectations and preferences of different markets.

    • The Importance of Cultural Knowledge in Business Decision-MakingCultural awareness and understanding are essential for successful business expansion, requiring menu adjustments to appeal to local customers and the support of allies to navigate difficult decisions and pricing strategies.

Having a deep understanding of local cultural knowledge is crucial for making informed business decisions. Kat Cole's experience with Hooters Restaurants highlights the importance of being aware of cultural perceptions and values when expanding into new markets. By acknowledging the significance of baked beans as a staple in Argentina and understanding the negative connotations attached to them, Kat realized the need for menu adjustments in order to appeal to local customers. However, taking these actions didn't come without pushback from executives who believed it was not her place to make such decisions. This emphasizes the significance of having allies, advocates, and mentors within an organization to support and guide employees through difficult situations. Furthermore, the conversation brings attention to the psychology of pricing and the importance of strategic pricing decisions that align with brand positioning and customer preferences.

    • Understanding and Managing Brand Identity and Pricing Dynamics: Insights from Kat ColeKnowing a brand's essence and establishing guardrails are key to maintaining its identity. AB testing technology can help navigate pricing challenges, and offering entry-level items during tough times can attract customers.

Understanding and managing a brand's identity and pricing dynamics are crucial for success. Kat Cole emphasizes the importance of knowing what the brand stands for and the need for guardrails to prevent straying too far from its essence. She talks about the challenges of testing price increases and how technology has made it easier to AB test different strategies. Furthermore, she discusses the difficulties faced when franchisees make pricing decisions that may harm the brand. Kat explains the need for offering an entry-level price point item to attract customers during tough economic times. She also mentions the resistance from franchisees to add a cheaper item to the menu due to fear of trade-down. Through her experiences, Kat learned how to effectively bring about change and adapt to the evolving market.

    • Prioritizing Self-Care for Effective LeadershipLeaders must prioritize their own well-being in order to effectively navigate through tough times and make decisions that are best for their overall health and capacity.

Leaders should prioritize self-care in order to navigate through tough times effectively. Kat Cole emphasizes the importance of taking care of oneself, both mentally and physically, as the foundation for leading during exceptional periods of change and difficulty. She highlights the need for leaders to put their own oxygen masks on first, acknowledging that they are often the ones who are relied upon the most and may not have many others who can fulfill their roles. Cole's personal experience of facing a miscarriage while managing a demanding workload underscores the necessity of assessing one's physical and emotional well-being before deciding how to proceed. Ultimately, leaders must make personal decisions regarding their capacity to handle challenging situations and determine what is best for their overall well-being.

    • The Power of Communication and VulnerabilityPrioritizing open and honest conversations fosters strong team dynamics and deep connections in relationships, allowing for growth and support.

It is important to prioritize communication and vulnerability within a team or relationship. Kat Cole's example of choosing to put herself in or out of the game, and then effectively communicating with her team, highlights the power of open and honest conversations. By sharing information selectively, she gave her team the opportunity to step up and offer support, creating a strong dynamic within the team. Furthermore, Kat's approach to her personal relationship with her husband demonstrates the value of intentional communication. Through monthly check-ins and thoughtful questions, they ensure that their relationship continues to grow and evolve. This emphasis on communication and vulnerability allows for deeper connections and a better understanding of each other's needs.

    • The Power of Consistent Check-ins and Open CommunicationRegular check-ins and open communication are crucial for enhancing relationships, both personal and professional. They can lead to better understanding, support, and stronger connections.

Consistent check-ins and open communication can greatly enhance relationships, whether personal or professional. Kat Cole emphasizes the importance of regular check-ins with her husband, which not only strengthened their relationship but also influenced her approach to one-on-one meetings with her team. Through these check-ins, she realized that she had been overlooking her husband's emotional processing, particularly after their miscarriage. This awareness allowed her to ask more sensitive questions and be more supportive in the following weeks. The conversation also highlights the significance of understanding and respecting each other's perspectives, especially in moments of difficulty. Taking time for meaningful conversations can lead to better understanding and ultimately foster stronger connections.

#195 Morgan Housel: Get Rich, Stay Rich

#195 Morgan Housel: Get Rich, Stay Rich

The skills it takes to get rich are drastically different from the skills it takes to stay rich. Few understand this phenomenon more than Morgan Housel. He's identified unique lessons about wealth, happiness, and money by studying the world's richest families and learning what they did to build their wealth and just how quickly they squandered it all.
In this conversation, Shane and Housel discuss various aspects of risk-taking, wealth accumulation, and financial independence. Morgan explains the importance of understanding personal financial goals and the dangers of social comparison, lets everyone in on his personal financial “mistake” that instantly made him sleep better at night, and why the poorest people in the world disproportionately play the lottery—and why it makes sense that they do. They also touch on the influence of upbringing on financial behaviors, the difference between being rich and wealthy, and the critical role of compounding in financial success. Of course, we can’t have a writer as good as Morgan Housel on the podcast and not ask him about his process, so Housel concludes with insights into storytelling, his writing processes, and the importance of leading by example in teaching financial values to children.
Morgan Housel is a partner at Collaborative Fund. Previously, he was an analyst at The Motley Fool. He is a two-time winner of the Best in Business Award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers and was selected by the Columbia Journalism Review for the Best Business Writing anthology. He's the author of two books: The Psychology of Money and Same as Ever.

#194 Abigail Shrier: The Parent-Therapy Trap

#194 Abigail Shrier: The Parent-Therapy Trap
Over the last decade, therapy has become the de facto solution to solve all sorts of problems for all sorts of people. Everyone has slowly accepted that therapy is normal and a net benefit to society.

But instead of helping kids work through difficult circumstances, what if it's just making the problems worse? That's what Abigail Shrier thinks is happening, and in this conversation, she reveals some surprising reasons why.

Shane and Shrier discuss the real reason therapy is "bad," how we got to this point of acceptance as a culture, and what you can do as a parent to get back to normalcy. Shrier also shares her experiences with lifelong therapy patients, who should actually be in therapy, and the one thing that makes someone a successful parent.

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. ~ Psalm 143:8 In the midst of life's storms, we can often find ourselves feeling lost, searching for guidance and reassurance. Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. https://createyournow.mn.co  Even David, a man after God's own heart, sought daily affirmation of God's love and direction. Like him, you too can turn to your Heavenly Father, seeking His divine path in moments of doubt and uncertainty. So, as you embark on this journey, remember the powerful prayer and cry out, "God, show me the way." This plea is not a passive request, but an active declaration of your dependence on God. It signifies your willingness to act, to make decisions, and to move forward in the direction that He points to. Just as David found comfort and strength in perceiving God's love as the morning light that breaks through the darkest night, you too desire to experience His love at the start of each day. In looking at Psalm 143:8, let the words resonate deeply within your soul, reminding you of the need for God's constant love and guidance. By seeking God's love in the morning, you embody His presence, regardless of the challenges you may face. Imagine God's love as a guiding force, a compass pointing you in the right direction. With His love as your True North, you can navigate the uncertainties of life with confidence and peace. Whether you are struggling with personal setbacks, facing difficult decisions, or feeling overwhelmed by the weight of the world, God's love is ever-present, ready to illuminate the path before you. The K.I.S.S. ~ Show me the way! When you acknowledge your dependence on God and actively seek His guidance, you open yourself up to what God has in store for you.  His love is not merely a source of comfort but a catalyst for growth, transformation, and purpose. God has placed a call on your life. As you submit yourself to His will, you'll discover that His plans for you are far greater than anything we could ever imagine. In times of darkness, doubt, or pain, hold fast to David's prayer and make it your own. Just as he trusted in God's unfailing love, so too can you embrace HIs divine gift of love and grace as you follow His lead.  Start each day by whispering, "Lord, show me the way." Let His love be the beacon that guides you, the compass that steers you, and the pillar of strength that sustains you. In this surrender, you find freedom, purpose, and an unbreakable connection with your risen Lord and Savior. Embrace His love, for it is the key that unlocks the doors of your heart and leads you on the journey He has planned for you. "Be present. Be incredible. 2941 More of We

    2941 More of We

Life can get in the way of loving those closest to us, especially our spouses. So instead of hiding in our busyness and floundering more in someone else's highlight reel, make a commitment to more of we.

How much time do you spend with your spouse?

Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. https://createyournow.mn.co

And would you say that you spend less time together now than when you got married?

Most of us have to really stop and think when we see our sweethearts. And as for the time, what time is it again?

The number one relationship, if you're married, is your spouse.

But very quickly, we find other ways to occupy our time, distract our attention, and lead us down a rabbit hole in our own homes.

It just does not seem fair to anyone!

Yet you live it every day. You get up and do YOUR thing and forget that there's someONE in your life. You take care of the children, because you have to. But the rest is left to fend for themselves.

How can any marriage be awesome if that's a typical every day?

What if you would make time for each other?

What if there was more of we?

The K.I.S.S. ~ More of WE!

My goal here is to get you thinking about how you spend TIME with your spouse.

Are you showing up with your best self, or is your spouse getting the leftovers?

"Leftovers are great for food, not so much for love!" ~ Kristianne Wargo

You get out what you put into your marriage. So why not show up with enthusiasm? Why not give more when you don't receive? Why not have compassion during challenges in life? Why not be together more than you are apart?

It's hard to build a strong foundation in marriage if you're not together. Logistics do matter.

I want to encourage you to analyze your time with your spouse.

    1. How much time do you spend together in bed?
    2. How much time do you spend as a couple awake and interacting?
    3. How much time do you spend talking about life, not just kids and career?

Then from there, you'll be able to see what is happening regarding time.

    Is time on your side?

Assuming that you fall into "most of us," then you can make some tweaks to how you hang out together. The way you spend your time together matters!

QUESTION: What can you do differently to add time to love?

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"

2644 Putting the Puzzle Pieces Together

2644 Putting the Puzzle Pieces Together
Unlocking your health mystery takes time and persistence. However, you can solve the puzzle and reset your health by putting the puzzle pieces together. One step at a time leads to miles of greatness! ~ Kristianne Wargo Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT But unfortunately, society has trained us that if we can take away your symptoms, why can't you still live however you desire? No restrictions. No exercise. Pure joy. Or is it truly pure joy? I have been battling a couple of different viruses since the beginning of the new year. Usually, I'm pretty healthy, not getting sick. But this season has not faired in my favor.  So it got me thinking even more. Since going through perimenopause and now on the other side, plus having gut issues my entire life, maybe I really need to take a hard look at what my body needs.  I know I'm not the average person which diets or fitness regimens are created for. A 1200-1500 calorie day does not work for me at all. And please do not flood my inbox as to what I might be missing. I've done the research and am currently studying real-time as to how my body responds and reacts to food, movement, vitamins, supplements, and so forth. Like any good detective, you've gotta put the puzzle pieces together to understand the whole picture. The K.I.S.S. ~ Put the puzzle pieces together! If you are struggling with your health, I want to encourage you not to give up. You can figure out what is happening and what needs to change. One thing I've been researching is the Paleo Diet. This diet is a whole-foods diet that includes only the most nutritionally dense and sustainable foods. (The Paleo Approach, https://ThePaleoMom.com, Pg. 9) Now, you have heard me say that the food all of us should be eating follows one rule: If God made it, I can eat it. But that's in it's natural state.  For example, God did not make bread. He made grains. So how those grains are prepared and eaten does affect the nutrient density of the food along with how it is absorbed within a person's body. If you are struggling with your health or weight, this might be a good alternative for you to try. As I said, I am taking you on my health journey in discovering all my quirks and likenesses.  You get to decide what you would like to try. This by no means substitutes for personal medical advice.
    - What are you eating that is real? This is the most natural state of the foods you eat.
    - What are you eating that is processed? If it's not one ingredient, it is processed.
    - How can you integrate more nutrient-dense foods?
One thing I want to caution you on. You do not have to define how you eat to anyone.  I have been asked several times, "What program are you doing?" My answer (and it should be yours, too) -- I'm eating what my body requires.  Because you might be a blend of Keto and Paleo. And there is nothing wrong with that. Don't fall into the trap that you must have a definitive cookie-cutter answer.  Your body is uniquely made. So treat it with the respect it deserves by putting together all the puzzle pieces. Now, I am currently working in the preparation stage gearing up to change my body's nutritional menu. I am taking detailed notes as to how my body responds to the "junk food". Then, I'll be able to see exactly how good food affects my body. It's going to be a long process, but I know we'll both learn so many things to benefit us in the long-run.  Hope you're ready to construct your puzzle. "Train for life. 1910 How Do You Balance Life's Demands?

1910 How Do You Balance Life's Demands?

Life can give you lemons; busyness, stress, and exhaustion. Out of control seems like the new normal. How do you balance life's demands when you can't escape your living room?

Maybe you've been running laps around the coffee table and knocked a few things over. Maybe you've decided that less is more.

But only if you could get less hanging out and more peace in the house.

Children of all ages can stir up so much energy. Yet the challenge is having this energy in one place ALWAYS! At least before, you could change the environment.

Now, you are stuck. Not because you want to be, but because you have to be.

Finding a balance in your own life is one thing. But creating it with the family is another.

So you gotta put first things first.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Put first things first!

Yes, the kiddos matter. But if you don't keep your head on, a lot more can go wrong.

So take a deep breath. Put first things first!

    1. Create an escape moment. This is a way to give yourself space for personal accountability. Run in such a way that you might win. (1 Corinthians 9:24) You may not be able to leave the area, but you can find a moment where you can gain a sense of peace.
    2. Energize with hope. Do something that switches the focus on the positive, not the negative. Dance. Laugh.
    3. Play Hide 'n Seek. You make the rules. Even the little ones can play. You can even play with doubles. Choose a base and you've got this. Just beware! The cat might give you away.

How you feel will be multiplied by the children. They can sense when you are feeling stressed, relaxed, or even nervous. Do your best to project what you want them to feed off of.

"Train for life. Love your journey!!!"
