The Super Bowl is set. And once again, the Chiefs are in it for the fourth time in the last five years, the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills faced off in the playoffs. And just like each of the first three times, it was the Chiefs coming out on top as Harrison Butker's 35 yard field goal with 333 to play gave KC the 32 to 29 win. The Chiefs will now look to become the first team in the Super Bowl era to win three championships in a row.

Good morning and welcome to the Monday edition of Buyers and Company. We're live on the road for the Century Tour at Hickory Point Bank, Mayor Decatur coming up next. Buyers and Company WSOY 1340 AM 103.3 FM streaming live at Now Decatur.com.
All right. Good morning and welcome. Sun is coming up and spring is not all that far away. We got temperatures in the forties today. Are you kidding me? It looks like it's going to be a banner week. I'm happy. Bear, are you happy? I left my parka at home. I brought my windbreaker. It is spring. Look at you. Got your hand. Say, chief's colors on today. You got your big wind. You got tailored down on the field. It was perfect.
Boyfriend didn't look all that great yesterday. He looked old, but Well, that's what other standards would there be if you're playing in a foot bar standards. Well, that's why I'm not playing football So I promised Lindsay I would ask you this question before we have serious things to talk about she thinks that if they get married it'll be televised like Princess Diana Back in the day. Okay
Now, I would say to you, Princess Diana was a public person, meaning the royal family has a role. How much more royal can you be at Taylor Swift? So you think Taylor Swift would like having her wedding broadcast for everyone's enjoyment? Well, I think she would want to share with everyone who cares about her. Y'all are so weird. I gotta tell you, it's cold. What would the price tag? Is that pay per view? Is it a broadcast? Is it a theater experience? I think it's only a pay per view if it goes to charity.
Here's the thing with Princess Diana everybody forgets this California people are age don't remember there were only about 11 ways you could watch Princess Diana getting married you know there was no Internet there was barely you know we didn't but it was viewed all over the world I mean the numbers were huge probably today I'm not even sure you could do those numbers even though there's so many ways to watch things to
Just because the entire world was focused to a couple of TV channels. You see those old numbers, like the match finale, and you go, you can't do that today. But it would be huge. But why in the world would she want her wedding to be televised? Maybe she wouldn't. We don't know. I imagine. Do you think it'd be weird? I think Princess Di thought it was weird. There wasn't any choice.
Right, but I mean, there are celebrities that really, really value their privacy and she has in some respects, but for the most part, she's been pretty open with her life. And so it's not like it's a new thing to. I think it would be weird.
And it also didn't work out well for the royal couple. A little bit different story like that one. Well, I don't know. But everybody was tuned in. All right. So you're happy. You get to go to the Super Bowl that you personally, but the team gets to go. Well, you get that experience, you know, where I'm offered to go to the booth, you know, where that
The private box would be fine. Would you just open hit the lottery here? I don't know. I was thinking, you know.
I get to take up a friendship, and then all bets are off. This is going to bootkate the Clark House. Probably not. It's a bear indicator. Hang out once, and then you're going to get a friendship, maybe. I love that you're pretty loved. The fact that you had an experience with 60,000 other people. Oh, it's more than that. And it's so special that you may get advised as a Super Bowl vox. I also thought I was running away with Paul McCartney, so everything might be loose. Yes, you have. Yes, you have. Yes, you have.
All right. Well, I was happy for you guys last night. Well, but scary wasn't quite the same game as the Eagles. You know, that was. Well, look, I was rooting for Buffalo. I don't root against Kansas City. I have nothing against them at all. And I'm not one of those people that hate on people for having success. Yeah, good for them. If they can three feet and do something that no other football teams ever done. Great. I'd like to watch. It'll be fun. Yeah, it will be.
So what was your Sunday like at the at the Wolf household? Do you guys gather with friends and family? We had the family over and had dinner and that sort of thing. But then we hit the point where things were getting a little tight in the game. And so whoever was like not watching when something good happened could not come back in the room and you had to stay down. Like I was banished to the kitchen for a while. I mean, you had to be in the front hall. Then when it was OK, we had to do the taboo do thing quite a bit seriously.
Okay, so is everybody a chief spin?
They are now. Okay. That's so weird. Central Illinois. A lot of fun. I showed Nick earlier, the chief's hate map. The number of people that nobody likes the winner. True that. Look, there's no doubt about that. It was interesting to me because the Kansas City Star had this story. I would have ignored it. It had been like sort of like the National Enquirer, but it was like the home city newspaper.
that showed literally the people that were rooting for Kansas City versus the people that were rooting for Buffalo. And it was absolutely amazing. So let me show you this map. This is the blue states were rooting for Buffalo.
The red space word for Kansas City. And what I love is the new Hampshire out of like nowhere. Is that Rhode Island too? It's like a little bit tiny. Yeah, that's really. So even here in Illinois, you'll notice you were in the minority yesterday. I went to Mizzou. So I do have a Missouri connection. You did? Yeah. The rest of your family didn't. Well, but they got the Taylor Swift and they got the connection. They got the connection to Julie. That's how it works.
So what were you? What are your Super Bowl plans? Are you home bodies? I mean, yeah, we'll be home bodies and because we really don't like it when people talk dream the game and we are focused on the game. I got you. That's why I didn't go when Atlanta went was for that reason. I want to watch the game and it comes a little tense and people, you know, start doing other things. Yeah, and it takes away from it when they're like, what? When's Gaga coming up? It's like, no, I was third down.
by down for a minute. And I think it's any more about the commercials of the game. But now I know I know I've always loved football. Always a big high school football fan. When I was kid, my brother-in-law played for Milliken and we went to the Boot Hill Bowl in Dodge City, Kansas on a train.
So wait, I've never heard any of those things. Is that still a thing? I don't know. But it was back then. What train? I don't know. We got someplace. Oh, I don't know. I don't even know what you're talking about. Everybody went. I'll think of the city. But I mean, we all of milk and got on this train. Decatur on a train? You didn't leave Decatur, but you drove to the train station. OK. And we all took a train. And I was probably in sixth grade or something. Really? That's pretty cool. Yeah.
before they had cars. I have driven to Kansas and through Kansas, you're not wrong, I thought Illinois was boring and then you think Missouri is boring and then you get the purgatory which is Kansas. Did you see the wheat Jesus?
It's a thing. I'm going to have to Google that. Yes, it is. No, we did that a few years ago and we took a trip to Utah. We went to see, you know, I did some cases. No, I think that was fun for about three hours. It was fun because it was COVID. So it was, and it was before everybody decided to go to every national park and bring 11 of their friends with them. So you see our pictures and people go, well, where are all the people? I'm like, well, hey, it was COVID.
And, you know, there were pretty strict protocols at the hotels and stuff. But we went because you could get outside and lose yourself in all of these. Do something. Yeah. But the drive, we thought, you never think this. You talk yourself into things in life, which sometimes it happens like the day before Super Bowl. And then somebody ends up like, well, we're not playing tomorrow. You talk yourself into a lot of things. And one of those was a family trip. We were going to go down to Florida.
All of it, my brother and sister, mom, dad, all of the nieces and nephews. And we were going to drive like we did when we were kids. We were like, you get in the van and you go to Florida. And it was a station wagon. But as a kid, it was great because you just you didn't have any sense of anything. You didn't have to drive.
And I knew an hour into that, we had made a very, very bad mistake. I mean, I was a bad choice. And so, subsequent years, get on a plane, we'll see you down there, right? Yeah, yeah. And the second one was, well, what tried to Utah? Oh, that was a bad idea. Were you in an RV? We'll see. No, it was just the three of us. Well, no, we stopped. In fact, we stayed at the Wheat Jesus Hotel. Oh, you'd have to stay there.
We have some great pictures. And it was weird because it was kind of like people weren't trying. I mean, it was, you know, we thought, we'll get in a car. We'll go do this in a safe way. We'll go to the National Parks. But it was a weird trip. But man, a long drive and Kansas is just unbelievable.
It's, it's bad. Now I used to have to drive my parents back and forth to Florida. Yeah. That was a long trip. No, but you got a little bit of got the mountains. You know, you know, when you're driving with elderly people, okay, stop every two hours and get out of the car and sit down and have coffee. Don't just do a drive through or a drop by. It is a, let's get that. Oh, it's just thing up. It takes. Like you get excited. Hit that one. Next 100 miles. Like, okay, that's one more.
Now do you have a mayor somewhere else that you can make a bet with the way like the governors of the mayors do you know when they have the big Super Bowl game? Well you I met personally like maybe you could find somebody you know Jimmy pack He's a Reds fan I don't know where that goes in the NFL I think it's Dave
All right, what's going on in the world of the city? Get out. That's a good question. New buses. New buses. Those are pretty cool. And I saw in the paper this morning, apparently some of our solar panels were damaged over at the Civic Center by bullets that like maybe landed on them or something. OK, no, wait a minute. Hang on a second.
First and foremost, you saw it where in the paper in the paper like an actual physical paper electronic paper the electronic paper you pay for a subscription. Yes. I don't know what people are thinking. Really? No, they get that there. I'd like to keep up. Good. Well, bullet holes and obituaries, they can play that. So coming down or going through
I think they must have, the way it looks is like they kind of landed or something and damaged a couple of the panels. So like somebody was, somebody didn't go and shoot out the panels. So it wasn't like from the ground. I don't believe so. Okay. Yeah. So they discovered damage. How is it that you don't know that? I don't know. I did not get a report. Who's in charge of the panels? Is that whole Civic Center relationship so weird? I never know who's very weird. So the parking lot is the Civic Center.
parking lot and the building and the building is the city so i assume the solar and and they're owned by a company i believe that we contract with so you just rent them yeah basically okay so but it's going to save a lot of money and power bills which is important because as you were pointing out i think is recently is last week civic center that city is responsible of civics and it doesn't make it okay so explain that to us what's the dumbest
It's like a 99 year lease to get a fordicator. There's a lot of those things. I mean, it's the transportation. It's the library. Why are you on the hook if they don't turn a profit or at least break even? Well, I think that was part of the deal when the Civic Center was built in order to get. And I think it must have been a federal thing, but there were a lot of civic centers built about the same time in like 1977, 78, somewhere in there.
all over the place. I don't know if it was Illinois or across the country, but in order to you had to have some sort of revenue stream or guarantee that it was going to make it. There was a 99 year lease with the city. But why didn't the city just build itself a home? I don't know. OK.
I was in high school. I was not. You were high school. Nobody asked me. I graduated in 78. Really? Okay. I don't think I was. I think I was still in great school. I'm pretty run it by you. And nobody asked me and I was in that too. So it just it seems like.
It feels like it's Illinois because the way we do everything here is like 900 school districts and you know So but it is true though that if the library is in a hole at the end of the year and and and they're doing a pretty good job down I mean but years ago when tuna was mayor
You know, there was a lot of arguing going on. They had that whole thing in the parking lot and that building full of asbestos and it was a mess. But if that mess gets handed to you, you have to take care of it at the end of the year if they're in the hole. Yeah. Literally. And Civic Center is the same way. True. Now mass transit, that's also sort of the head of mass transit is a city employee. But the department, the drivers,
et cetera, are a different company that we contract with. And we're really looking at that contract because it's Lacey Elsie, who is the director of transit, was at our last council meeting and really explaining that they've made some changes, made some adjustments, and really we're paying a lot more than we should be for, you know, like by a couple million dollars for the service that we're getting.
Okay, so why is that sort of not like every other department with the city indicator? I think at some point there was an analysis done and it was going to be a better deal for the taxpayers for the city to do it. Now, I believe it wasn't that long ago that the bus drivers were city employees because there was an issue when we changed everything because they lost a lot of benefits, et cetera, and they wanted to remain city employees. So I think we're going to be really
I'm trying to remember when our contract is up with, I think it's MV transportation, sounds right, but really analyzing what the routes are gonna look like, what the microtransit's gonna, that pilot will look like, and trying to figure out how to do the best thing for the community. Okay, and then what was presented, we talked about this a little bit after the City Council meeting, but there were some alternate sort of ways of maybe providing public transportation. I'm still gonna have the thing that you do now, but maybe
I don't know, tweaking things here or there. Almost kind of like a city run, I don't want to call it Uber, because it wouldn't just be, Brian wants to go to the movies, but something that makes sense, because right now, if you work second shift, we don't have transportation to get you home. And if you take the bus, you've got to have a different way home. So looking at what kind of, what can we do that makes more sense for the workforce, for companies, because what you don't want to have is a barrier. And if you are a mom,
or a dad that has to get a kid to take care and you've got to do it by bus, you've got to take you an hour and have to get to work in Decatur. And most places in Decatur are 10 minutes away. Okay. And then make that make sense for just anecdotally looking at the buses, which if you just look at them most of the time, a lot of them are fairly empty. Yeah, or not certainly not anywhere near full. Well, yeah. And I think most of us seem to go by as like, why are they so big? And that has been a question since I've been on council is why are we buying such big buses?
And there was something about the price being about the same, and especially now with hybrids, or going to more of an electric. Like watching the trolley turn the corner as we speak metaphorically from a higher power. Who are they picking up? Well, workers in a different parking lot and bring them to their offices. That would be the plan. That's a sign.
I mean, we were right, but to be fair, we are two blocks from the hub, and you watch... That probably doesn't have the thing to do with the bus hub. No, but I mean, I'm watching buses too, and I'm watching them come to and from, and people walking towards the place getting their day started.
I see people on the bus all the time. I trolley was there was nobody on the trial. It was a driver. There was a person driving. And I'm not going to defend the trolley, but it's one of those things that we need a better use of. At least we can use it for some special events now that we never used to be able to do. And what changed there? I don't know because there was something in the grant agreement that we couldn't use it for XYZ filling. And it had to be on a very specific route. And so we've managed to
I don't know if there was some rules or not as strenuous or what, but it managed to negotiate some a better deal. I think it's great that you can use it for events that happen in downtown Decatur to move people around, like the Christmas Walk or whatever. The Christmas Walk or even if it's in, I don't know if they specifically use the trolley, but for a time we were trying to encourage people to use downtown restaurants. So if there was a performance at the Devon,
You know, pick people up, take them to the Devon and the trolley. I don't know if that the original plan was to have it go to Milliken University and bring Milliken students to downtown and back. Yeah, you remember that vaguely that didn't really take off. Well, I think that that's that's hard to penetrate that bubble. I mean, when
Are you going to have a regular population that wants to come downtown that frequently? And that's really the reality. I mean, because they're college kids, and they don't have a lot of money, and they're going to eat. So they're probably going to the gym now, unless mom and dad are in town. Maybe then, maybe then. So she seems very bright anyway, and the press station was made, and the conversations are ongoing. But that sort of historically over the years has kind of been a mess. Well, and it's doing it the way they've done it.
Lacey has really had an amazing amount of leadership coming in and saying, let's look at this differently. In fact, she worked with our grant writer, Anne Schneider, to get the nine million plus dollars for the Jasper Street corridor because it's largely a transportation issue and how do we make it work better? And that's, you know, she's looking at it with really fresh eyes and a different perspective of, you know, does this really make sense for Decatur? Sure. What do we need to be doing? All right. So keep us posted on that. What else is going on?
I'm trying to think I'm so into football. Okay, you're still right in the high. Were you worried at all? Yesterday. Yeah, okay. Way worried. And then there's Stanley three feet. You know, hey, have you been, have you been online much lately? No, what's been fun? All of these old commercials have been popping up like the old Super Bowl commercials. They've been running on show up on my reels and stuff. And it's like,
The Budweiser commercials where the horses get in a snowball fight. It's the one where the puppy gets lost. And then it's trying to make it home. And the wolf tries to get it and the Clydesdales come out. They're like, not on my watch. It's like, it's reliving child. Do you remember the Barbie doll and GI Joe Van Halen?
You know, it's Toyota, I think. Like the Ken doll shows up in the, you know, they're playing that you really got me, you know, Van Halen's. I think that we remember those finally, A, because you didn't get a couple of weeks to see them beforehand. You know, you only got to see them. It's hard. It's hard because it popped up and you're like kind of sucked in and it's like, I learned the squint. Well, I was a quick squint. What is this commercial? You know, and it's a guy with like
barbells and he's doing dances and he's holding the barbells up on his pinky and you know it's not real but you know it's like what is this coming? Yeah, what are we selling? What am I supposed to take away? It's not an apple product at the end but it's like I didn't have any it's all about the power. I think it's when you get to do it by half with your advertising sometimes when people try to go for creative awards rather than selling products. Yeah, because I really need to know what they're doing and they better be funny or heartwarming. So super bowl then you will
Do you all watch in the same room, except when you get banished to the kitchen for bad luck or whatever? Well, we have TVs just in like every room. So there's a TV in the den or just TV in the kitchen. There's a TV, you know, in the family room and TV in the basement. So pretty much any council running on all of them. Yeah. All right. So what's your Super Bowl menu? I haven't really gotten that far yet, but get more traditional stuff, probably, you know, like
I can do in advance because I'm not cooking. I am watching the game. And, you know, it will be stuff that can either be hot in a crockpot or can, you know, you help yourself. Lots of local restaurants. Do some takeout. Absolutely. But yeah, I do like to cook. So I like to, you know, throw how big a party will you have? No, it'll be mostly family. Well, okay. So seven of us, maybe. All right. That's not bad. I'm gonna send you my prop bet bingo for you so you guys can play along. It'll be fun.
And you just give you a list of like a hundred things that might happen. You watch form and then you check them off. Oh, I need this. I got you. That's fun. Maybe we can put one together for council. It's like I said, but I feel like I can connect with you. This is going off the rails. What are the municipal elections look like?
You know, it's been so unbelievably quiet. I don't think I've seen a political sign. And usually by now. Oh, that's a good point. I don't get the name out there. Well, we've had a couple weeks of really bad weather. True. And absolutely. I mean, I don't think you could put up a sign in the ground last week. That's that's a very fair point. Yeah. Usually.
by now, because council people, unless you own a business, it's hard to get name recognition out there and people to know. And it does matter. And you're placing the ballot. If nobody knows who anybody is, there usually is one that gets out there and blank and gets way out ahead. Well, especially since you know that there's going to be an open seat with Chuck, you will not running again. You know that somebody knew somebody is going to be and there are two other seats up. But I mean, you definitely know there is an opening.
So who's going to, you know, be a new face on couch. All right. Well, it'll be interesting. I know I think one of the candidates had reached out recently about, you know, getting on the air with us and we'll try to make sure we offer that up. We'll offer it up to all of them. But do you know anything about any of the candidates coming in? One candidate I've known for several years. Our kids grew up together, same neighborhood. I've met a couple of the others.
But I don't really know much about the platforms of a lot of them. So, you know, we're interested to see. Okay. And school board. It's running for school board that I was surprised about. Oh, Devon Joyner. I didn't know was running for school last week. Yeah. And so, and I didn't even realize that when he was on your show with Old King's Orchard. Yeah. That was a surprise. I'm not sure who else is running. Okay. Well, we'll see. It's a big election. And there's like zero noise. Just about everything else.
Yeah. Yeah. I don't disagree. I've said it often. People need pay attention. People need to be a part of it. All right, Mayor, we've got 20 seconds left here. Give me your your I know we get two weeks and you can revise this next Monday. If you give me your winner. Well, the chief's for chief spy. I don't know. Five six. Wow. Okay. Obviously counting on Mr. Barkley getting hit by a boss on the way in or something. We'll take a break for news back with more after this.
I'm Chris Foster. Back pay and benefits are coming for service members discharged for refusing a COVID vaccine also reinstatement to the military if they want. More than 8,000 service men and women were discharged between 2021 and 2023 because they refused to get vaccinated against COVID. And then once the military's mandate was repealed in 2023, only 43 people actually tried to go back.
the Kansas City Chiefs could be the first team to win three Super Bowls in a row after beating Buffalo 32 29 for the AFC Championship on a field goal with three minutes left. Their opponents will be the same team that they'd be the Super Bowl two years ago, the Eagles, Philadelphia with a 55 23 win over the Washington commanders in the NFC title game as Washington committed four turnovers, all of which led to Eagles touchdown. Boxes, Greg Thompson, safe one, Barkley and Jalen Hertz scored three touchdowns each. America's listening to Fox News.

each and every weekend or weekday morning. Excuse me. We check in with Mark Tupper and Tupper on sports. All right. Let's start with the NFL big day yesterday on a day like yesterday when you commit as a fan to seven hours or more of viewing time because of what's at stake and a pair of games that are going to create the Super Bowl matchup. You sure hope there's a big payoff
And that the Kansas City Buffalo game delivered just that. I mean, that 32 29 victory over the bills was just terrific back and forth. Big plays, two great quarterbacks in another epic duel in their, you know, in a story that's going to define their careers. And Patrick Mahomes just continues to dazzle. And now given what's at stake, I mean, at least for me, I have to root for him.
to make history and lead the Chiefs to the first ever three-peat in the Super Bowl era. And for that to happen, they're going to have to defeat a really good Philadelphia Eagles team February 9th in the Super Bowl in New Orleans. I mean, a Philadelphia Eagles team that hung 55 on the commanders yesterday. My homes, though, is just amazing. And honestly,
at age 29. He looks to me like he's moving faster than he ever has. I thought his running ability, his escape ability was a very key component for the Chiefs yesterday. And yet this was still a nail biter because Josh Allen always keeps the bills in the running and it took the Kansas City defense to rise up and force Josh Allen to throw an incomplete pass on fourth down near midfield with two minutes remaining. This is the
The fourth time Kansas City in Buffalo have met in the postseason. Kansas City is 4-0, which means that Josh Allen is 0-4. And this is exactly how great NBA players felt when it was their misfortune to bump into Michael Jordan in the 90s.
But he was otherworldly great. And time after time, inevitably, you would lose. And the frustration on Josh Allen's face at the end of that game, to me, was just heartbreaking. He knows that he's asking himself, what do I have to do? And he knows that the answer is, it doesn't matter because that other guy's going to just figure out a way to do more. Kansas City, one and a half point favorites over Philadelphia.
headed to New Orleans, and we'll have a couple of weeks to talk more about the Eagles. But, wow, what a performance yesterday by Mahomes. All right, on the other side of the break, we'll do a little align-eye from the weekend with Mark Topper and Topper on Sports. Hi, I'm Dave Koshinsky, CEO of Investment Planners and IPI Wealth Management. At IPI, integrity and ensuring significance and peace of mind are the key to the way we do business. Our clients trust us to take care of their investments.
and is our responsibility to work with business partners that will help us do just that. First National Bank is one of those partners. FNB's Quality Service and two Decatur branches provide us the stability we need to accomplish our mission. Thanks, FNB. First National Bank, member FDIC. Back here with Mark Topper and Topper on Sports. Moving over to the Illini.
Well, we're going through a strange period here in late January for the Alina basketball team and it made me think about something that was said yesterday regarding the journey that these NFL teams make from training camp to the start of the regular season through a long 18 week regular season into the playoffs.
and that will eventually bring to those teams to the Super Bowl College basketball and NFL football. Those are really long seasons and no team is the same from week one until the postseason teams evolve. They deal with setbacks like injuries, they adjust, they have to, they change and hopefully they improve and the Alana basketball teams forced to make adjustments and tweaks now due to injuries and illness.
And this has been a rocky process from a really jolting lost to Maryland. And then yesterday, a blowout win against Northwestern. They've dealt with an injury to their point guard, Casparis Yachashonas. And an illness, it turns out to be mononucleosis that has put starting Senator Tommy Eva Sich on the shelf for an indefinite time. And when key players are out, other guys have to step up.
And yesterday it was Morez Johnson, Illinois's other big man who stepped up in a big way. He brought it all. Defense, offense, rebounding, hustle. And he did it from the first possession of the game. When he dove onto the floor to lock up a loose ball, that got everybody fired up. That set the tone. His teammates followed. And they built a 22-point halftime lead. And it was really Johnson's defense on Nick Martinelli.
that helped throw Northwestern off balance. I don't think they were prepared for that matchup. Nick Martin, LA 670 is more of a perimeter guy that bounces all over the place. Morez is 69 to 60. He's an inside guy, but he was very active defensively. He finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, three block shots,
And he had help. Kyle and Boswell was 17 points. Ben Hummerkhouse hit four, three pointers and had 14. Um, Casparas, Yaksoshounas, 11 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists. They just smothered Northwestern for the bulk of the game. Um, and then Northwestern made a little run at the end, but, um, they missed Tommy Yvesch. Um, and it'll be tougher against bigger teams. Next up is a road game Thursday at Nebraska.
and then they come home next Sunday to play Ohio State. If this team could get whole and stay whole, they can be really, really good. And what they are learning during this challenging period could really be beneficial in the long run. Yesterday they played really well.
All right, my friend, have a great day. And we will check in with you first thing tomorrow morning back in the studios tomorrow for Mark Tepper and Tepper on sports coming up here in a little bit after the commercial break. We'll welcome Matt Fairchild, executive vice president, commercial banking and Dan Bolt, commercial banking officer with us. And then a little more in the eight o'clock hour live at Hickard Point Bank. Son is up. It's going to be a beautiful day.
Yeah, it's pretty exciting. It's a little chilly, but that's just nitpicking because it's going to be warm. It's going to be warm. And you're right. The sun is already up and there's a light breeze. It's beautiful. There are people coming to and from work. And I'm hearing the elevator action go a little bit more and more frequently. Look at that week ahead. It's 41, 44, 44, 45, 48, 43, wait for it next Sunday, 51.
Yeah, that snow should be gone by then. I would think maybe not, but I mean, most of the other stuff should be super gone. Yeah, you can kind of squint now and see a yard if you don't go too far in your periphery and stuff is starting to melt away from the house ready to go. But more than the snow, just that, you know, sub zero temperatures. Oh my God. Yeah, I don't
I don't pretend to know if this is the end of, I mean, I don't think we'll have more, not maybe as much as we had. We'll have another little something around there between now and spring. I mean, you just count on it. You know, it's, I don't think 10 inches, but we'll get something. I don't remember a time where we got one snow and the snow sat there for weeks. I don't remember.
We had a snowmageddon thing a number of years back. I can just remember like what my sidewalk looked like. It was like four feet. You know, like a tunnel looked like something in Minnesota or something. But normally, no, we the last couple of winners we've had very, very wild. So it just goes away because the temperature. Absolutely. We just happen to have a foot of snow dumped on us and then sub zero temperatures two weeks. So this week, it's going to be great. All right. We'll take the break when we get back.

Think of a bigger or better partner that we've had in the almost 30 years that I've been doing this than Hicker Point Bank. And the great thing about that is that they're exactly the same as when they were founded back in 1979, a locally owned bank. Matt Fairchild, you've been doing us a while. I mean, when you were a kid. Yes, absolutely. And locally owned banks were way more common. They were. There's been a lot of change over time, but we're really excited to be Decatur's local bank. And, you know, our tradition, our history,
We're still owned and run by local business people and make decisions here locally in the community. We think that's a really, really important thing for us. I can tell you, you know, you can talk to me about the banking side, but I can tell you from the community side, you know, it's no different today than going to see Dale Arnold in his office back in the day. You know, when you had something worthy of support or charitable cause or food drive or whatever it might be, it was always easy to get hit or point back involved. And it still remains that way today.
Well, a lot of that's driven from our leadership. And Doug Schmalls was named the chairman of the board for the bank in 1986 when it was first bought by ADM and remains the chair today.
even after a group of local business owners, employees, management, bought the bank away from ADM in 2011. 2011, well, those years all kind of blur together. But the service stayed the same. And the commitment to the community stayed the same. And being invested, you know, you guys live a tagline like no one I've ever seen. I mean, the idea perfectly describes what you do. You're invested in this community. Well, we have to be. I mean, really, we want our communities to be successful. It raises up all local businesses,
everyone in our communities if we can all be successful together and that comes from every walk of life. We need people to have opportunities to be able to move things forward and we really want to help support that in our community. That fair child is executive vice president of commercial banking. Also with us is Dan Bolt commercial banking officer. Tomorrow you know we're here today but tomorrow we'll be back in the studios and hicker point bank will be a part of our show tomorrow because they do their monthly investments
segment, which I believe Peggy's going to be in with Habitat for Humanity. I mean, it's amazing how many of your folks serve on boards and committees. I mean, not just the bank supporting things financially, but your people are out there in the community at large. It's really important to be in with these local organizations that do so much for our community with the United Way YMCA. There's just... How long have you been serving for the United Way? So, Brian, when I first joined the United Way Board, I remember serving with you. I'm right at my nine-year mark.
I may have to take a step back, but before that Brett Swallow served for nine years on the United Way Board, and I know Nick is there with me now, and it's just a remarkable organization. It is, and I got to ask you, though, you're not the treasurer, are you? No, no. The bankers always get stuck with the same job, right? I mean, it's really unfair, like maybe you'd like to show another side off when you serve on a board. Yeah, the treasurer role is definitely aligned with bankers, and I've been in that role before.
We're happy to help as we can. All right. Dan, welcome to the program. Good to have you with us. Tell me a little bit about commercial banking. Where are we here in 2025? We talked about the real estate side a little earlier and people buying homes. We know that's kind of an upside-down world right now with inventory and everything else. What's commercial look like? Well, first off, thanks for having us on. I appreciate it.
You know, commercials continue to pick up. That's continuing to go. I'm enjoying it so far. I've enjoyed working for Matt over the last year. But it's continuing to pick up. And it's something that Matt and I are continuing to invest our time in. OK, and talk to me about, you know, you've been doing this a while. What does commercial look like today versus 10 years ago? Really today, honestly, right now, looking forward, I feel like there's a real sense of optimism.
I really enjoy seeing that and talking to people. I think our local business community is tremendous in supporting each other and tremendous in trying to find ways to be more successful, bring things to Decatur, bring wealth to Decatur and help their employees and move everything forward. We saw a big shake up, though, across all things with COVID, right? I mean, it changed the way people were doing everything. And it certainly changed
this work at home dynamic versus work at an office dynamic, which, you know, was a big shake up for the commercial side of things, right? I mean, maybe not as much in the city, the size of the cater, but certainly you see in big cities where you've got office buildings that are just sitting there empty. Yes. In our community, we experienced inflation like many places did. And we've tried to weather and work through that and come out strong on the other side. And it's really a testament to all of our local businesses.
The way we've continued downtown is still looks great. We've got some great restaurants down here. We've got a really a fantastic. It is and it's interesting. Nick and I were talking about this early. You know, you can look right out your window here and there's our six floor studios. We're so used to looking things from the six floor down. It feels weird down here.
just outside your windows here, right? Working with people like that, helping them bring their dreams to fruition has to be like working with a couple, you know, buying their first house. I mean, you get to do that magic on the commercial side of things. It really is. People invest their lives in their business, local business owners. Everything for them is tied to the success of that business and having a stable partner, a financial partner that's going to stand there by him and good times and bad and help him be successful is
very, very valuable to them. All right. Talk to me a little bit about your staff. Dan said he's been here for about a year. What about the rest of the team? Oh, we have a great team. We continue to add to it. Christy Weemer, our director of treasury management here in town, Bennett Jackson, working both on the mortgage side and the treasury management side, helping our local businesses with cash flow needs. And then we've added a couple new people. So Rachel Costello was recently added. She's helping run our banking centers, a big, big
benefit and somebody who is also invested in the community, invested in what we do. And then Matt Riley, we hired on our wealth management side recently. Really happy to have him here. We'll be with us coming up at eight 40. Excellent. Excellent. Yeah, working with Dave Brandon and our trust and both management team. We have an excellent team. Yeah, I think I parked in Dave's parking spot. I hope he doesn't mind this morning. I'm kidding, Dave. I'm in the regular metered lot. So
When you're looking for new employees, what are you looking for today? You know, I mean, I feel like banking has kind of like been this thing for a long time and it's sort of maybe slow to adapt. But, you know, younger people are looking for different things, different value systems, right, than they did. Maybe when I was coming up or you were coming up, what are you guys looking for when you think about a hicker point bank employee? It's really simple. We're looking for integrity in a heart for service. That's part of what makes us different.
to do what's right for others, to help them be successful in what they want, to not be a transactional business, but really take the time to understand our clients and help them get to where they want to go. It makes sense, right? I mean, and maybe, you know, the retail world adapts to that quicker because they have to to survive, but at that attitude, if I give you the extra customer service, I mean, if I give you something, you can't get somewhere else, you're going to be a long-term customer.
It seems like it sounds like some magical ingredient, but it really comes down to how any successful business works. Yeah, it's simple, but not easy. Yeah. And that's the way a lot of the world works is doing the simple thing is not always easy. But if you focus on doing what's right and build trust, that's what banking is all about. It's about trust, trusting us to help you to steward your funds and make sure that you get where you want to go when you're right. Dan, tell me about your story. Where are you from? How did you end up here?
So I'm originally from Morton, Illinois, and ended up going to Brabby University to play some baseball and after that field. And right after that, the bank gave me the opportunity to come on to the commercial side as a credit underwriter. Worked with the credit side for about two years and Matt asked me to come on here and a real cool part about first week when I got here with Matt. He looks at me like, hey, you know, let's get you out in the community here. Make sure you get involved in a few.
you know local local agencies and on top of that go ahead and you know drive around town a couple days a week here these first couple weeks and get yourself acclimated his goal wasn't about us
me going out there and creating loans right away. He wanted me to learn this community because that's how I'll be able to invest back into it. Yeah, there's no doubt. I'll tell you, and you've been here about a year, you said? Yeah, now indicator. I feel like it's a, you know, the community's welcomed you. I feel like we do a pretty good job of that overall. Not everybody does. I think, you know, we've had people in our company go from Springfield to Decatur and Decatur Springfield. And those are two very different experiences. I mean, it's just the fact. So you've found that to be true.
Yeah, it's very true. Right away, you started seeing some of our faces. People greet me. I couldn't catch on to all the names, but people named my names are right away. And that was very special to see here how tight-knit this community is. It is a small community of many ways, right? It really is. So I came from Champagne Indicator in 2012. And I just remember going to Rotary. So I was in Rotary and Champagne. I joined Rotary here when I came to Decatur, and everybody was really welcoming. It was amazing.
really a wide segment of the community attending rotary trying to do good things in the community. And we still have a stronger order. We really do. It's not everywhere, right? No, it's unique. It's unique. Pretty cool stuff, guys.
They're invested, they certainly are, and I can't count the number of things we see. You know, there are just some things you know in this community. And if I go to an event, or there's a fundraiser, or there's something for a cause, or there's something about the quality of life in this community, more often there's going to be a hicker point bank logo attached to that in some way. And so we appreciate what you guys do, and don't take it for granted. I mean, we really don't. Pretty amazing stuff. Thank you. We appreciate you having us on the
The century to about we figured out, you know, people don't care about 100 years ago. It's a fun story. And it goes back to Milliken University, which we'll tell you about a little bit the next hour because there's an interesting history to that. But the what we've been doing for 100 years is telling people stories. That's what we do for a living. So we thought instead of us talking about 100 years, let's go out and continue to tell those people stories because we can't do this. This community doesn't move forward and get to where it needs to get if we just don't have these partnerships. And so we want to celebrate you guys.
and all the other great businesses and organizations that we are partners with because that's what makes the community move forward. Well, we appreciate it and look forward to hearing more stories around the community. All right, we appreciate Matt Dan. Thank you very much. We'll take a quick break.
