Good morning and welcome to the Friday edition of Buyers and Company. We got a winter storm warning in effect. We'll give you all the details beyond next forecast. We'll check in with Mark Tupper, bring out our home highlight Angela back from the Citrus Bowl next. Buyers and Company W. S. O. Y. 13 40 a.m. 103.3 f.m. streaming live at now
Yeah, we're going to pay for that mild December starting this weekend beyond just cold and frigid temperatures. As Nick mentioned, a lot of snow getting dumped and the winter storm warning that's in effect for making county. It's a winter storm watch at this point. Maybe that's good. Winter storms targeted portions of the lower Midwest between Saturday night and Monday evening, breathing, bringing travel impacts directly to portions of central and southeast Illinois.
Heavy snow of 10 plus inches is likely overall, according to the National Weather Service. Additionally, a band of accumulating flat ice is one of one to two tenths of an inch as possible. Blustery north winds will occasionally gust between 20 and 30 miles per hour, potentially leading to blowing and drifting snow across east
west highways as well as sporadic perhaps power outages yay portions of central east central southeast and west central Illinois ice accumulations will be confined to areas along and south of interstate seventy from late saturday night through monday morning roads and especially bridges and overpasses will likely become slick and hazardous travel could be very difficult to impossible hazardous conditions could impact the monday morning commute so that is the latest national weather service
And we still have a couple of days before all of that lands as far as you just never know with this stuff. But I would remind you, if particularly school closures and all that, all of those emails have been sent earlier in the year to the administrators and the people who are in charge of that. And we will do our texting service by school and all of that if there are any closings on Monday.
We do the school closings first in case it's been a while. I don't recall, you know, doing this for quite a while. And maybe we dodge a bullet, we don't have to, but businesses and all that come a little later. The main priority and the AEM is to let people know whether or not their kids have to go to school.
Oh, yeah. I mean, that's that is the biggest priority because a lot of times that determines whether you can go to work or not. Anyway, you know, if you got a bunch of kids at home with nowhere for them to go, a lot of times people are working from home or not or using those sick and today, you know, it's easier.
In some cases to do that today just because people got used to sort of working from home and you've got your office and you're hooked up and you're networked in and all that is a little easier today. One of the byproducts of having the rough couple of years of COVID and more people working from home. And so but it's still a big deal and we haven't had one of these for a while. I hope it misses. You know, I think there's people out there that just pay attention to the weather and they go, I'm so upset. You scared me and now nothing happened. That's the hope that that is what we pray for.
That's exactly right. You're prepared in case. If it doesn't, no harm, no foul. I did look last night, which is not characteristic for me because I kept hearing people just casually, you know, like you just made a grocery store restaurant or something here and go try not to get snowed in. I'm like, what is this? So I peeked ahead, which is not normal for me.
And I saw that the snow was originally going to be like 10 to 15 inches and it was going to continue for several days. Well, yeah, we went from a winter storm warning overnight to a winter storm watch. We still their odds are 70% that we have winter storm. It's even not it's even 90% but but it's it didn't happen last night that there was there was even a thought of a dusting last night.
and then it lessened. And then additionally, it looks like it gets kind of out of here. It leaves the cold, but it, but the precipitation, yeah, it looks like by Tuesday, you know, will be good to go cold. As you said, hopefully the wind dies down a little and we're going to have like, I don't know, six degrees for the low, you know, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and then up into the teens and twenties.
And we'll be okay. I'm just saying this, the ice thing is the scary thing. You can particularly when it snows and it looks very pristine, but will you get ice on top of that? And you can't tell it's treacherous. So Monday morning's commute could be a little dodgy, just telling you ahead of time. And hopefully it all I would love for this thing to whiff. Yeah, that would be great. That would be that would be ideal, actually.
Right now, there's an 85% chance of snow and freezing rain, snow on Sunday and 60% chance into Monday. And I believe most of that is into the early morning hours of Monday. And it's going to be nasty. There's no doubt. I mean, but it's winter and we survive this every year and we will. Man, Illinois basketball made history last night.
No, I didn't know they made history. I was looking at the champagne room. I don't know if you ever follow that website. There's a story by Stephen Cohen, right? And this was January 2nd yesterday, 1127 PM. According to him, the Illinois wind, they beat Oregon, the number nine team in the country 109 to 77.
And according to the champagne room, the 32 point margin of victory is the largest ever by any team in a road game against an AP top 10 opponent. Whoa, I didn't realize that. That's crazy. I mean, it wasn't it wasn't a game in question in the line. I had thumped them. Yeah.
And the 109 points are the second most any team has ever scored in a regulation road game against the top 10 opponent trailing only Kansas State's 116 at Texas in 2023. So.
impressive display last night by the line I will check in with mark topper coming up around 730 this morning and then Angela will be with us back from the Citrus Bowl where she got to see the line I win that bowl game I can't wait to hear about you know I watched it on TV yeah you could tell the crowd was really into it they were really loud but you're still limited to the experience you get I want to know just just
the whole thing. They were staying at the at the team hotel. I think that's cool. So it'll be amazing. She'll be in a little bit later and Tom Brinketer will be in along with the Brinketer home highlight recapping 24 looking ahead to 25 in the real estate market. So all of that straight ahead.
All right. So do you have anxiety about this stuff over the next few days? It just feels like we used to have a lot of this in the winter and now we don't have nearly as much. So when it does come back with a fury, it does sort of be like starting over a little bit. You're talking about the weather? Just the snow and thinking about, you know, eight inches or 12 inches or whatever. It ends up being hopefully not that much, but it just everything grinding to a halt.
Yeah. And for a lot of people, I mean, there are a lot of people that and wisely, I mean, not to make fun wisely that are. I'm not going out on that. I'm not doing this. I'm not. I mean, and so there was a lot of productivity. There's a lot of commerce. There's a lot of things that are just basically lost a day and a lot of ways, you know, you get an appointment that's been set for six months and well, we're not going to make it in.
We're going to have to reschedule. And it's like, man, I need to get my knee looked at. Can you squeeze me in somewhere? Yeah. I know I I'd avoid grocery stores and all the other stuff because we we do tend to sort of like, well, I got to get it stocked up like you can't make it through 24 out. Yeah. Well, you just hope it doesn't extend into 24. I mean, beyond the 24, there have been probably twice and maybe three times in my adult life that I remember.
like literally, all right. Well, we are powers out. Okay. Now it's out some more. And now it looks like it's going to be out for a while. And in those situations are fine for a minute. Yeah. But then they start to become problematic. I can't absolutely can. And depends on how much wind generally is involved when you get the really frigid temperatures and then a lot of wind, not ever good. So we'll keep it, keep you posted, but keep an eye on it.
And once again, cancellations were there and you can reach directly to Lindsay Romano if you've had a change in personnel or something. That's always the thing every year. It's like, oh, the person you've been sitting this to for 10 years isn't there anymore. Right. That's exactly right. So anyway, that works. All right. We have we have our final matchup for college football, right? Notre Dame beat Georgia. So now we know what the semi are the what is the semi finals, right? Yeah, the final four. We're down to four, right? Yeah.
And then I don't think that the actual championship game is to like January 22nd or something like that. That's what they did last year. They put the big space in between for well now they have to because they got to play the game. That's right. Yep. And they have the, they'd like to do like the Super Bowl and give you the press week and the practice and all of that sort of stuff, which makes sense. I know people
get bummed out of some people get bummed out about that in the NFL that Super Bowl is not for two weeks. It's like they got a lot to do and they're pretty busy, right? We may not see football and we have that weekend off or whatever, but there's a lot going on in the football world.
Yeah, but that's a relatively new meaning it used to always just be a one week thing. And then they added the week. And yeah, I think they get to hype the game and do all that at the end of the day. It doesn't make any difference when it is. You're going to be there. I was looking at the most rated shows of all of TV last year in 2024 and the NFL in this country still is. I mean,
It's almost hard to believe. I mean, I know it dominates, but when you see it stacked up on a list here, your top 100 TV programs of 2024. It's not even a question. No. And I think that that number is kind of it's kind of weird anymore because you take a show that's a top tier show.
And all the different platforms and availability and time shifted and clips that you'd watch, they would get up there with the NFL. But realistically, the NFL is this game at that time. And if you miss it, you miss it. And that's why it works.
I mean, there's really one opportunity, one window to really take it in. And because it's, you know, results driven, a lot of people aren't going to walk around in the world and not know who won the Super Bowl or the. Yeah, but they even, but there's even growth in even the tremendous like advantage they already had, like Amazon's Thursday night football grew by 12% from year to year, you know, which is
And today's divided up, I mean, 12% a lot. So it's not only on top, but growing. Yeah, I'm not surprised. I'm not surprised at all. And, you know, I heard an argument about the NFL via talking about wrestling, moving to Netflix. And one little thing that I've not heard in all the things that I've read about this was some guy telling his friend. He goes, I think it's really smart for them to move to the streaming.
because it avoids the channel surfing. That once you put it on, you're less likely to open another and it's just on. It's just there and you don't have the
the urge or to just blindly switch to something and get lost and sidetracked. Part of that is what we used to think of as a commercial break. You know, and the commercial break would lead you to go, oh, I'm going to go check on this thing. You know, I've got three minutes or whatever in your mind. You don't do that. You know, for whatever reason, when you're streaming Netflix, it's not the same thing. That's absolutely right. And I had never thought about it, that basic, that simple from the user experience.
When I put on Amazon Prime on Thursday night for football, it's on that whole window. And usually before and usually stays on a little bit after. And not because I'm so interested in hearing what the Houston Texans did or something. It's just, it's on. It's fairly captivating. Might as well leave it all on doing whatever else I'm doing.
So I think these numbers are going to continue to rise and be a little sticky for the time being. Yeah. And I think the streaming numbers on the other stuff, you know, like, well, am I watching Tracker on CBS or am I watching it on the Paramount app or am I watching it? You know, however,
I think that those streaming numbers will be more public when they are convinced they can come out and not be ridiculed about numbers. Like I think they've lived in a secret world because they really don't want you to know what the numbers are. That's exactly right. And also it's hard to quantify. So like here's, if you watch the show,
on December 31st and I watch it on January 1st. That's one view one year. That's one view the other year. That's not the big number of the two. It's one and one and this time shifting different platforming, different access, different time, different whatever that I download it and watch it later. How do you count that? There's so many things that are not telling the whole story and you're right.
So when they put the numbers out, they won't look as impressive, but I bet you the data behind it tells you that the numbers are fairly massively impressive and that they're doing fine. I guess I wonder though, why, what's then, you know, I've lived in this world for a long time. What is the significance of not sharing audience information? If you have massive numbers to share, you know, wouldn't advertisers wouldn't, I mean, I don't, it doesn't make any sense to me.
The massive number is never going to be what the massive numbers were because of dilution. You know, there is not going to be. Well, in except for the NFL, except for the NFL. And that is again, that's a thing that is time specific driven. And that's something we still care about live events.
like, like funeral of Michael Jack, whatever it is, OJ trial, things like that will continue to be up there. But things that I could watch at any time at my convenience anywhere, those numbers will never stack up like they used to because well, no, I mean, you don't, there's, yes, that's absolutely right because there's too many different areas. But even, you know, with the OJ trial, you know, like court TV or whatever, it was still diluted because people were watching it on TV or whatever. But everybody's engagement was
on that. Yeah. So of the 100 most watched prime time telecast, according to Variety magazine, there was 75 of those 100 slots were sports. As you said, this is the only place I can get it.
It's here. This is what time it starts. I could DDR it and go watch it later, but then this is here's the thing you're going to do. What was interesting, by the way, that's up from 56 out of the top 100 last year. And I think part of that would be the Olympics. Part of that would be the NCAA women's basketball championship, right? Because they made there were 19 Paris summer Olympic installments.
that made the list 45 NFL games. And what's interesting.
is that the, to your point about Otani, whatever last week or whenever we talked about that before we left, the World Series didn't make the list last year, but all five games made the list this year, so that did move the needle for TV ratings. And for the first time ever, and we knew this at the time we talked about it, but it's still sort of startling to me, the NCAA men's basketball championship
did not make the top 100. And you would think that would be one of those that's happening at this time and everybody's tuned in. But the women's championship game did. That's right. And here's the thing. I'll do. I'll be a quiz you right now. Name one woman that was playing in that game. You can't easy. Name one man now.
Oh, that's not, but that's for me, maybe it's, I mean, but that's a simple. Yeah, but that would be most, most Saturdays. But what I'm saying is that those are, that is the reason why the numbers went in the two different directions. Yeah, I guess so, but, but you, you con was a big story, weren't they? I mean, they're coach, I mean, ish, I mean, relative to college basketball, good basketball, all of that. What I'm saying is people didn't tune in for Iowa.
They tuned in for Kaitlyn Clark and the numbers shot up. People didn't tune in for Kaitlyn Clark on the men's side cause there wasn't. Yeah. So they're, their number for their championship game was 18.87 million people. The men's was 14.82. That's a good number. But when you're beating them head to head,
Yeah, it won't happen again, not this year. I don't know. I think that the way they're building this up, you know, the Peyton Manning documentary they did with, you know, because Juju Watkins is still there in school. You know, Paige Becker's is still there. They've got some superstars that were on the peripheral of all that story last year that I think, you know, who knows? I mean, if UCLA rolls and you've got a superstar that's in every other commercial,
That's a maybe. It's not Caitlin Clark though. The numbers will be strong. I'm not knocking women here. That's or women's basketball at all. Because you and I have watched more of it the most people in the last year in particular. I think they will come back down to a higher earth. They might. But the fact that they went had to help us and beat them by almost 5 million viewers for the championship game.
And I don't think the championship game, yes, there are there superstars on the men's side that like supersede teen loyalty, meaning like I don't have to know anything about Yukon. Sure. I'm a huge fan of this guy. That's right. People around here were watching
the aligning in that tournament. And once the aligning, I got a limited, you know, you're kind of like, all right, whatever, or your bracket at home. But that doesn't mean you have a player that is, is a Caitlin clock. That's for sure. I don't mean talent wise probably did, but not super stardom wise. Anyway, sports still continues to be, you know, out of the 100 slots, the top 100 viewed shows of 2024, 75 of those went to sports. And I think
They've got to be happy with the Paris Olympics. I would think NBC would 19 out of the hundred seems like a lot to me. And a lot of that is Simone Biles. A lot of that is the track swimming, you know, but think about though, why these Netflix shows or Amazon shows are so important to the end result. And this is what I don't know how to determine. I watched way more track.
at the Olympics because I watched that sprinter show on Netflix and got all the stories about the people from not only the US, but Jamaica. And I went in with a vested interest of finding out and wanting to find out what happened to them. So the Netflix wasn't paying the big rights to have the Olympics, but they sparked my interest in watching the Olympics more this year than I have in the past, which is minimally
the idea of these organizations on on the front end drive to survive. All of these. This is not new, but it still works. Yeah. And so now what we're going to see is the landscape getting solidified for who's going to make the lion's share the money and all the content that needs to go with. You're right. You're not you're not going to be
I just read the tracker took 15 of the spots too. It did. But then you look at their numbers versus like, I mean, and they had, and you have to have a good show, but they got that both matlock and tracker got that super bowl lead in. You know, they got that big Sunday, you know, but here's the stage. Yeah. And I don't know how many people stick around, you know, after the game to go, well, yeah, we'll watch matlock. I don't know, but it's certainly you'd want to be in front of that huge train. Sure would.
Can't hurt. Yeah. All right. We got to take a break for bottom of the hour news. We have a lot to get to here today. Winter storm watch at this point. It was a warning last night. It's now a watch. Hopefully that bodes well, but we can have some serious stuff ahead and stay tuned Monday morning and Sunday night for closures or anything else you need to know. We'll be back after news. Stay tuned. This is RJ craze with your stories.
Now, the Illinois Department of Labor is reminding job seekers and employers that all job postings by employers with 15 or more employees now must include pay scale and benefit info. Employers are now also required to inform current employees about all open job postings so they can choose to apply. This is all due to an amendment to the Illinois Equal Pay Act of 2003 that was passed last year.
The state health department says a number of new laws and rules designed to strengthen the public health system are now in effect. One is a more stringent standard for public health intervention based on the results of testing of blood, lead levels and children.
Also, assisted living facilities must submit plans for construction or major renovations for approval by IDPH before beginning construction, and mandatory reporting for cases of patient abuse by staff also applies to clinics or other health care providers affiliated with hospitals. You're listening to fires and company streaming live at now Decatur.com. Here's your fascinating stat out of all of the top 100 watch TV programs or entertainment programs of last year, the September 10th presidential debate, which was on ABC.
That number on ABC was 20.3 million. But if you count the simulcast by all of the other multiple networks, that audience was 67.1 million PPM, which would have placed it in second place to the Super Bowl. So a highly anticipated debate in an election year, simulcast on multiple networks,
didn't beat the Super Bowl. I wonder if that counts all the streaming and, yeah, yeah, ABC gets the credit. So it shows up as 20.3 million because they were the network of origin. I mean, it was their debate, but the amazing thing to me is like you've got every other cable network and broadcast network, simulcasting that and it still doesn't beat the Super Bowl. Yeah, it's crazy.
I mean, that's another big one, obviously. And then the Oscars snuck in with like 20 million. So I mean, that was surprising to me. It was the only award show, right?
Yeah, it was the highest one. I think the only one that hit the top 100. You mentioned Tracker having 15 of those slots. There were four editions of 60 minutes and two back-to-back final episodes of Young Sheldon. I saw an episode of the OT also. So somebody stuck around people stuck around after a sporting event. Yeah. Yeah, it's awesome.
And I don't know, you know, the movie business because of Oppenheimer and Barbie. And there's a lot more hype around Hollywood. You're right. The Grammys were up. Let's try to see any of the other award shows.
Grammys beat the Oscars in the 18 to 49. Now we get out of the weeds, but you know, you got sheer size and then you got like, who are you looking for in that size? And sometimes the numbers aren't the only thing. Anyway, there you have it. NBC led the most slots with 38 up from 24 last year. Mainly, that's a prime time Sunday night football.
And all the summer Olympics coverage next with CBS with 25 ABC with 12 prime video with 10 Fox with nine ESPN with five and one for Fox News. So think about that prime video with 10. The only show that would even come close to this list because they do not do appointment viewing. Is there NFL deal?
It's 10 weeks of Thursday night football. Yeah. So they bought a 10% share of the top 100 shows. Yeah. Just with Thursday night football, which has been branded as a flop, has been games that stank and regretful, whatever. And hasn't that been kind of the hang on Thursday night football forever? That's what I'm saying. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Still. Yeah. I mean, that tells you why these numbers are going to continue to be what they are. Yeah. I just think it's fascinating. Oh, yeah. And also just where the American attention is.
you know, the Olympics, presidential races, you know, those that come around every four years, you know, well, summer and then the winter, two years and then back to summer, summer's a way bigger ratings getter than winter Olympics, for sure, just more sports. And so those things are kind of outliers, meaning like next year you won't have that. So what is the top 100 list? But the constant in here, you know, and if, if Otani and the Dodgers or some of these big names aren't in the world series, you know, if it's
the Padres versus, you know, I mean, you'll see dips in those kinds of things, but the NFL, I mean, it's just not going anywhere. I mean, and it's not only not going anywhere. It continues to grow. You would think it would be at a point where it would be hard to see a 12% increase in something as big as it is. They have looked at it. They are going to get to the point. I know they have the NFL network and that's on 24 hours or whatever, but they want to get to the point where it's seven days a week NFL.
Premium sort of thing they are they they make a big deal out of when the players get picked they make a big deal when the schedule gets dropped They put games on Christmas. They put games on a Wednesday Friday, but we're also living in a time I feel like there's a lot of people to root for
And there's a lot of talent and there's a lot of stars and there's a lot of likable stars. You know, I mean, I know we've always had big names, but I mean, you just think about the quarterbacks playing today in football. I don't know. I can't hang with, maybe, but you're talking about L.A. and they were all at the same time. But they were never as
as omnipresent as Patrick Mahomes is. I mean, in every other state farm commercial. And I mean, there's so much, I think John Elway, I mean, I grew up with all that. I mean, there were great quarterbacks and there were great classes of quarterbacks. But when you look at today, like even arguing about who the MVP is going to be, and you can make the case for five or six people being the MVP in a year,
It's I don't know. We have personalities. You got Travis Kelsey. You got Taylor Swift. Yeah, that's the first step in. And it's never been as big a circus. And I don't mean circus in a negative way. I mean, it's just the tent just seems full. Yeah, the production has gotten way, way bigger. It's gotten way bigger. They've invested in it. All the values are up. If they had the same apparatus at the time, if we're if we're doing
It's impossible to do that. I started this, but it's hard to do that. I think they had more mainstream stars 90 80s into the 90s than they do now. But I think that the apparatus is there and kids are leaning in. They're buying the cleats. They're wearing Jordans on the field. I think it's the cross over audience because of, I mean, there's never been a tailor swift in the NFL. No, no, there's not been that. I mean, that's a one time phenomenon that
can't, yeah, you can't discount that. Right. And when you start thinking about the fashion and all the other stuff with Jay Z, you know, I mean, the fact that the other Kelsey brothers wife now has a podcast that's just dethroned Joe Rogan. Like there seems to be all these characters. And think about what, I mean, not to discredit her. I don't know. No, I'm about to sort of. Okay. And around about way, because I don't, she got her opportunity. She's shining. She is
She is the wife of an obscure
although very good and probably Hall of Fame center for a team in Philadelphia offensive lineman in Philadelphia. Yeah, I would not say that he's obscure anymore. I mean, he's everywhere. What I'm saying is think about that. Name one other lineman let alone their wife. But that's because the platforms are available. It just feels like it touches more parts of life than it used to. I feel like there's way more women watching today than there would have been in the 80s or early 90s. It's a bigger
You know, part of that is, yeah, the camera work and it's 10K 12. I mean, you've got unbelievable. The game is so much more fun to watch than you go back and look at a game from the 80s and you go, oh my god, look at the graphics, look at like whatever.
weren't the numbers significantly bigger though in the 80s but there was nothing else. I know that when you had 11 channels to choose from totally understand that. No, I but you also didn't have anybody just following the NFL on Instagram. I mean, their audience is much bigger to them. Yeah. And you can touch them in any way.
Absolutely. Some gumball machines. I just think of the commercials I see, you know, how many times, and you don't have to be watching football to see Patrick Mahomes. I mean, he's everywhere. Yeah, except the Pro Bowl.
He didn't, well, he didn't deserve to be. No, I know what you didn't. You probably say, thank you. At least I don't have to find an excuse. He's going to get named. He'll probably get named. Yeah, I mean, I do be busy the Super Bowl. Right. Anyway, the fact is you and the commercials are funny too. They're good. They're not the stilted like I'm doing a Hertz commercial or OJ running through an airport. I mean, classic, classic, but it's terrible.
When you go back and look at how bad the acting was, how how stilted they were like in commercials. These guys today feel like multi stars in a lot of different universes and they wear it well. Oh yeah. Devontae Adams, Taco Bell in this house. Exactly.
Now, it is. I still think it's funny because the helmets and their faces, I mean, outside of the ones we just mentioned, you know, they still got to be like in their full football uniform and some of these commercials were sitting in their living room so you know it's an NFL guy. Yeah, or they have to say their name like on all the lows commercials. Hey, McCaffrey. Yes, Kelsey. Anyway, and I it's great that they're sitting in a really good spot.
But so the Olympics to me this year, I think a lot of this recipe and maybe it's just me, but I don't think it's just me because the way that it's all being built out when I watched quarterback, right? And then receiver, the Peyton Manning deal. I love those shows.
And I don't root for any of those teams that were in either of those shows, but it made me want to root for him. It made me care. Like it made me watch with the 49ers or playing because I wanted to see this goofy dude do well because he was so much fun to watch. You know, and another thing that you probably don't realize is that it made you have a little more knowledge about the things around them. So you can't talk about Devontae Adams without mentioning the other greats and their contemporaries. So now you're sitting down watching the bangles ago.
I know who Justin or Jamar Chase is because I heard about him or saw him, you know, and so now you've got this little bit of knowledge and you could sit down and baseball has one of these shows in the works with Netflix. The smart ones, the tennis one didn't work. I think tennis is a hard, hard sport.
You know, you're all of your superstars, you know, have are either aging out or have already aged out. I don't know what the next, you know, line of that's going to be, right? You've got some on the women's side in particular, but you've also got some steroid stuff and some drugs popping up. And just the it feels too fancy for most people. And it is. And that show felt like people making millions of dollars and having tons of thousands of free clothes and all that it was wine.
But drive to survive they found a way even though that audience is that it is it's a fine line because they are they are. I don't disagree that they found the characters and yeah but but somebody I think
You know, how many people we all drive? We don't drive race cars, but you think about like, oh, they go 200 miles an hour. And that's dangerous. Yeah, kid with a tennis racket and the private jet just doesn't like it. Oh, you got a boo boo. Yeah. Oh, darn, I better fly off to Geneva. But I'll continue to watch these shows. And not only the one leading up to the Olympics about the track people, but also the Simone Biles was very powerful. Oh, yeah. And I love the recipe that they did for both of those is they gave you a preview.
And then after the fact, they gave you the whole run through to the metal stand, do everything else. And you felt like, Oh, I got that whole story. And I watched it real time live. That's cool. Smart, new patrol officers sworn in yesterday, five new patrol officers in a swearing in ceremony Thursday at the city council chambers. You can check out the story at data cated.com. But like to say, welcome, William Cutwright, workman from Clinton, Logan Jordan of Oriana.
Brighton Fuchs. I hope I'm saying that from Lincoln, Lacey Middleton of Decatur and Stephen Vickers of Aurora, Illinois, who is also joining his brother and is also a Decatur police officer. So they begin their basic training at the main county law enforcement training center, which we call Macletsi start on Sunday, which will last 16 weeks after returning the return to the DVD for a five month in service field training program. So welcome to the Decatur police department.
Yeah, it's cool. And I like that there are a number of those people coming in from other communities. Yeah, or at local. Nice mix. That's always the... I mean, I'm pointing out the idea that I like people moving to our community to work in the living. That is always...
the mix that you want. And there are, it's amazing to me, take law enforcement out of this could be anything, you know, new superintendent, whatever it might be. And there's always this argument of, oh, no, you got to promote locally. And then there's this other argument, oh, no, you got to go out and get brain power and bring them here. And I think the answer is A, always get the best person for the job. And B, you hope it's a nice mix of both of those. That's right. That's exactly right.
Not one or the other. They all look like they coordinated their wearing black suits and very sharp. Nice. Yeah. I don't know if I've ever been in the city chambers. What do you imagine it looks like? Because you would know if you've been in. Because you have the TV view that you think you have and then what it really looks like when you're in. Is it maybe about the size of this end of the building? Like, I mean, is it smallish?
Uh, it's smaller than you probably think it is, but in some cases it might be bigger. It's not tiny. Okay. I mean, maybe holds a hundred people. Yeah. And what kind of seating? Like just like your theater seating. Okay. Yeah. I don't think I've been in there. It's got a really weird light.
you have noticed that from the photos like that. But I mean, it's a terrible light for like media like to take pictures or video at either the yellow kind of feel in there and they get the big seal and the flags and the state flag and
the National United States flag, and then there's the dais where the council members sit, and then they also have commission meetings and whatnot in there. And it's all miked up and ready for broadcast. But the light is always the thing to me. It's like, man, who designed the lightings? And how come we don't have stone reliefs on the walls of the 1800s when we were founded and all of that? Why do we just have regular walls? That's a good question.
bureaucracy and art don't always meet. No, but it also be way weird to have like a stone relief in the civic center of building. If we were in the post office or something. Yeah, we do have some great art in the post office. They used to do that. Government actually used to be pretty good at that. I know. And a lot of the great stuff. Our post office has some of the best art you will find anywhere. In fact, every time I go mail a letter, which is like every six months, I would just like to walk around in there and just take it in. There's so many stories to be told. I look at it all the time.
and the style is pretty cool. And then I remember we talked about the origin of the program and how the art got.
put into these post offices and things like that. It's always neat. By the way, there's also a link in the story about the new officers. If you're interested in learning more about a career with a kid or police department, you can click on that link and find out exactly how that starting process looks. I love the fact that my cletsies here and, you know, these folks are all going to be out there for that 16 week training and then, you know, they're right here. I mean, they don't have to go somewhere else. They're right here. Yeah, you're not kidding. I live and spend a lot of time on that into town.
the sheer volume. And I think it's almost daily occurrence. And sometimes multiple times in a day. So on average, more than once a day, I see police vehicles from communities all over the place. Well, I just police. Yeah. I mean, it's the Illinois Department of Corrections, the Illinois State Police. I mean, it is. And then if you go down a little bit to the ICAD, you know, which is kind of tucked back in. You can't really see it from the road. There are people from all over the United States of America.
And I'm seeing them at gas stations and restaurants and, you know, whatever, running and grabbing drinks and stuff, but they're from everywhere. Yeah.
Everywhere. The economic development part of that thing is the most undersold part of the whole story. If you live in the south side, you know, I mean, you fully understand it because you see them literally everywhere. You're like, am I getting pulled over? Nope. It's just a guy from Aurora. Yeah. The basic training, you know, folks, they stay there on campus. But a lot of those people that are coming in, they're here for two days, three days a week or whatever, their hotel rooms, restaurants, it's unbelievable. Yeah, there's no question about it. I mean, it's tangible on the south side of town.
Well, congratulations to our newest officers. Awesome. Check out the story at nadakator.com. Nick's got your three day forecast. Don't blame the guy reading the weather forecast. In fact, he's got a little better today than when I went to bed last night. That's great. But we're down from a warning to a watch. That's right. No snow on the ground right now. Today, it's mostly sunny and windy, a high of twenty six tonight, mostly clear and a low of thirteen. We could see some windshield values as low as three.
for Saturday, increasing clouds, high of 24, wind chill values down at three again. And there's a chance overnight snow. Sunday is the one to watch out for overnight. Saturday starts. But Sunday, we have snow, a 90% chance of that. It could be heavy at times. Wendy with a high of 24. We could see four to eight inches of accumulation. The current temperature in downtown Decatur is 22 degrees. And your WSOI time is 650.

for a line. I fans will be checking in with Mark Topper at the bottom of next hour. And then Angela is back from the cheese at bowl and we'll get her firsthand account of what it was like to be there in person to watch the line. I went a big bowl game. Here's one more stat courtesy of the champagne room about that win against Oregon last night for the men's basketball team. I dominate number nine Oregon 109 77. The first time the line I have scored 100 against the top 10 teams since
Ooh, is it Darren and Dee? No. Is it way back to the Flying Alignite? Yes. Oh, wow. December 22, 1990. Oh, way back. Illinois beat LSU and Shaquille O'Neal 102 to 96. Oh, wow. Holy cow.
That's one of the biggest games in the line of history. Well, it was a big game last night. It just happened to be late and we're all getting used to like, okay, now they're the big 10 now, right? Yeah. And you know what this team, this Alainai team enjoy it while you can because
These kids are going to scatter right after the year. They have some star players and a unique blend. I think they're dangerous. We have tickets to give away too. So keep listening courtesy of the first mid ticket window for a home line. I games that was all the way out in Oregon last night, which you could listen to it right here, but a late game. All right. Once again, we'll keep you posted heading and rolling into Monday morning and figure out what it's like.
As we go along, hopefully this thing whips. This is all part of this vortex system is moving across the United States. The cold temperatures coming with it. Worst case scenario, you get literally some snow and some ice mix, which is awful. And the worst thing could be probably the commute Monday morning.
You know, you get snow dumped. The trucks get out. The plows get to it. You get your driveway cleaned out. It's that ice thing you got to watch. That's right. Yeah. And we'll keep it posted. Garbage rates causing everybody to lose their minds, even though the story was months old, right? They just went into a fact with January. Yeah, I don't even remember what the number is on that. Well, this is only if you live in Decatur because other so you this would impact you.
Um, hang on a second. We had this whole discussion along with the mayor and other folks. I'll be honest as you're looking that up. My garbage service has been pretty rock solid. So good. I mean, really, I they've worked out a lot of the kinks and my concerns and occasional can toppled over and not picking it up. But that's the worst of it. Uh, let's see. The Kansas City Council proved 4% rate increase to garbage rates last year. According to the city basic service of one tote will be 27 82 a month.
up from 2675 expanded service, which includes two totes will be 39 26 a month up from 37 75 a month. And look, that's probably actually a good. I'm sorry, Brian, a good time to maybe tell people as you're looking at your bill, we gave you this morning. Last time we talked about this in warnings, just this bit of information. Some of the haulers were defaulting you to double or expanded service. Yeah.
And so you would look if now that you know what the new rates are, it's being told you again, if you're in the almost $40 range instead of like the almost $30 range and you're not doing two totes.
Look at your bill. Call them. That's not a recycling tote. That's to totes for actual garbage. So just look and make sure if you need to, then that's what it costs. No big deal. But if you only need one, you're paying a little more and it was more like a system. I don't want to call it glitch, but a system sort of thing where you just got carried over. Now you know what the score is. Take a look. Make sure you're paying what you're supposed to. You're getting what you want. I find that less than a dollar a day, even though they don't come every day. I have garbage every day.
I feel like that's we're still in the fair range on this. You know, I think when you have somebody drive to your house and get rid of the stuff that you have thrown away, that you don't want rotten food, whatever it is, and take it to wherever it has to go, I think that a fair price is OK. I still question the fact that they used to be able to do this for less money and come twice a week. And now they come once a week and it's more money. I mean, that my head has a hard time
doing the math there. I mean, but that I look at it wasn't 25 years ago. No, but I mean, like even dollar drinks or a dollar or two 29 now. I know that. I'm just saying, how did it? How was it affordable? How did companies stay in business being able to come out to your house twice a week now for less money? There's a lot of factors there.
a lot of owner operators less the pies divided less inflation.
cost of labor. And I'm not discounting any of that. I think that's all accurate. But there's also greed in the world. And there's also, you know, and I don't have any problem. Like we have great garbage service. I don't ever have any problem at all. We put the stuff out. They send you a nice message like the last couple of holidays, you know, last week's, you know, because college was going to be on a Wednesday. So normally we have Thursday garbage service. So we'll be there, you know, a day later Friday. Okay, great. No problem.
They come and they go and they don't leave stuff in the street. I don't even problem with the men and women who do this stuff locally. It's like the post office conversation. It's the when you do need something and you try to get through that thing. Right. The customer service is not there. No. Yeah. That's the one side. And I've been fortunate recently to not need that. But the other side is
Well, I have cameras on my house. If you're going to sit here and call me stupid or say I'm lying without saying it. Yeah, the default thing is you did something right. It's like I've got I've literally got time stamped video. Like do you want to just get this? Let's just sort it out. Yeah. There's no reason to try to get away. There's no car blocking anything. There was no, you know, there's none of that stuff. Your guy just didn't come.
send them back out or they forgot. You buy a human mistake. That's OK. It is OK. Yeah. That's the only thing I would ask. And when you break it down dollar by dollar and what, you know, to me, it's like postage rates. And I know like for somebody like Paul who's sitting out newspapers, very different thing than us and going to buying a stamp, you know, it's still an awfully affordable thing.
In fact, when to do the math, it really is. It's unbelievably affordable. All right. We have to take a top of the outbreak when we get back on the other side, a lot to get to. We'll check in with Tom Brinketer in studios and the Brinketer home highlight. We had a doozy for you and a 25 was it? Where was our gift card tomorrow? John blank. It's in Mount Zion. We'll tell you all about it. Stay tuned.
